It's not every day you get to sample premium sake. To be truthful, I never really knew much about sake, other than the good stuff is best served cold. My usual M.O. with sake is a small, hot carafe when I have sushi. But my experience here has made me rethink this incredible beverage. I opted for the Daiginjo flight, which I highly recommend. Daiginjo is the best form of sake, with the process polishing down the rice grain to 50% or less of its original volume. The ones I had ranged from 40% to 50%. I'm not sure exactly what this does, but I can sure tell you, it makes a massive difference in the smoothness and taste. The first 3 sakes in the sampler are from Japan; the last is their exclusive sake made right in Forest Grove. Here's my take on the sakes I had: The Murai Family was aromatic and slightly floral. The Hakutsuru: smooth, slight fruitiness, subtle, with an interesting aftertaste on the back sides of my tongue. The Yoshi No Gawa was smoother with a slight tang at the back of my tongue. And last but not least, the in-house Nagata had a nice balance of bold, silky, and fruity/floral. I even admired its "legs" as I did a swirl to see viscosity. After the flight, I decided on a cocktail, the Blackberry Lime Martini. Tart, sweet, deliciousness. When I left, I bought a bottle of Sho-Une, which didn't break the bank, but is supposed to be great for the price point. I'm saving it for a special occasion. I'm looking forward to visiting this fine establishment again. read more

The tasting experience was pleasant, our host/server was very warm and helpful. I got the "basic" flight. I didn't care for any of the sakes, but my husband got a glass of the special on tap and it was excellent. I would definitely go back to try their imported flights. Now this is definitely unique to Oregon. And probably the only one of its kind here too! I've bought and sampled plenty of imported saké from various regions of Japan. As well as visited a few distilleries. But for this locally made saké, I would say they've got their own clean and crispy flavor with the varieties that I've sampled. Here we tried both their Sweet Flight ($12) and their Daiginjo Flight ($25) and I was pretty impressed with both of them. But I did favor the daiginjo moreover than the sweet. We even did a small charcuterie plate to snack on as we sipped and sampled. For now, only their tasting room is open, but you can also sit outside to enjoy the sun on their patio if you choose. The tables outside do have umbrellas, just in case the clouds roll away and you need some shade. So I say, "for now" only because they use to do distillery tours. Due to covid they wanna keep the place sanitized, understandable! However, I was told that they will start up tours again sometime in the near future, and I plan to do so once they're ready. Finally, to give some credit, our group had reservations and we were hosted by and served by Allison and Samantha. Both were cordial and knowledgeable about their saké. Whatever questions I had, they answered; Everything from the process, to the fruitiness, or dry flavors, they balanced our taste buds to the type of saké with the flights. Thank you Allison and Samantha! Keep in mind the tasting room location isn't like visiting one of the fancy vineyard in the area. If you've never been here, don't expect vista views or anything. I've wanted to come for a while, and it was amazing! I'd been buying their G Joy and G 50 for some time and was excited to try a broader range of their wares. Definitely one of the best tours and tastings I've ever had. Carly was so knowledgeable and friendly and really helped us get to know the SakéOne family. The tasting we picked was of all SakéOne craft sakés and was just delightful. I appreciated experiencing all the various nuances of flavor. Carly was super attentive and provided lots of great info. We had a fantastic sake tasting here, thanks to the wonderful, very knowledgeable staff! I ended up joining the same club just for their discount and to get access to the limited release stuff - I think it's well worth it. Their locally made sakes are absolutely delicious and you can't go wrong with their imports either! We sat outside on a gorgeous summer day. Their deck is very nice - you feel like you're away summer more remote for a bit, despite this being right off a pretty busy road. Our water came in the fancy ceramic type sake bottle (the $90 on from Hakutsuru) which was fun. We went with the imported and the fancy imported tasting flights as we were already quite familiar with (and fans) of the locally brewed stuff. They were amazing! We even got to try some off flight stuff that they still had, including their delicious slushy using the coconut lemongrass sake, the namazake (unpasteurized) and a limited import from the spring release. Wow. I went home with four bottles. Looking forward to going back for the next club release ! read more

Tonight was Oysterfest at Saké One. A starting Bloody Mary (with Saké). A pairing with 4 different Sakés and sunstone oysters from Hama-Hama farms, provided by The Pacific Way restaurant. Their shucking skills were impressive, and they were knowledgeable. A couple of sides and very relaxing evening. They even had live music to boot. They do events about twice a month if they can get enough people. It's awesome. Also, if you're not a member, why not?? Two sake flights and a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Charcuterie plate made for an awesome mid-day luncheon! The patio and deck at SakeOne is quaint, bordered by bamboo, a quiet fountain, umbrellas to deflect the sun, and helpful and attentive staff. We purchased three bottles of our favorite sake to go, and we are seriously considering joining the membership club on our next visit. From the Sweet flight, my wife's favorites were the Plum and the Asian Pear, while I also adored the Plum and the Hakutsuru Awayuki. We both agreed the Coconut Lemongrass was nice to sip, but a bit too sweet and thick: it would be best as a cooking sake, in our opinion. Of the Craft flight, the Silver and Pearl bookended our experience as the superior offerings, with the Sillver being a light-weight traditional, and the Pearl being thick and almost creamy, with an edge that cuts like a katana. Unfortunately, the brewery building was closed due to Covid-19, but that is to be expected. It's nice to have high-quality, locally made sake right here in Oregon! SakeOne is a must visit for any sake connoisseur in the Pacific Northwest. It's the best experience you'll find outside the Land of the Rising Sun. read more

My first experience of kura tour followed by tasing. (Kura tour is Fri to Sun) Knowledgeable staff explains how the first sake making business in US started here in Oregon, and all processes they go through to fine sake. They also have outdoor seating picnic table, so you can bring your snacks while you are tasing flight. I liked organic junmai and limited edition (see the attached photos). My husband, friend, and I had a really fun tasting experience here earlier this summer (though less tasting for me, more sniffing - ugh, pregnancy). My husband is a SakéOne club member so he was especially psyched to visit since we've enjoyed periodic saké deliveries for the past couple of years. We elected to do the tasting outside since it was a nice, mild day, and the employee who served us was really nice. I've done a tasting here before a few years back and love that they have different flight options to choose from. My husband & pal each chose a different tasting so they could share the two and it worked out well. If you are a huge sake fan, this should be on your tour. Or if you are not that familiar with sake this should be on your tour. If you are a general fan of run off the mill sake and you just like the $10 bottle of your favorite stuff, you might want to stop here - but be prepared for sticker shock. This is the bespoke winery experience of sake tasting. Unlike the Takara sake museum in Berkeley where you get an entire flight and a history of sake making for five dollars, here for $12 you will get five interesting tastes and be able to purchase top shelf sake at A slightly higher mark up than regular Whole Foods prices. If you're lucky you will have a rather officious millennial with a slightly derisive air poor for you. I All in all I am very glad that I stopped to check it out on a whim during my drive from Astoria back to Eugene. I do love the fall surprise. read more

Do this! Go to SakeOne and take the tour, have a flight, have two flights! I arrived with my +1 about 15 minutes before 1pm. We were there to take a tour with a MeetUp.com group - you know, strangers who do things. I could go on and on about MeetUp and what a good thing it has been for me (bike rides, hikes, movies, potlucks, dancing) but this review is for SakeOne. The tour was short but very interesting. I learned things, so winning. The highlight was the tasting. We sat outside since it was such a great day. I won't go into detail on every pour, but there was only one that I wouldn't have again and it was infused with other flavors. I prefer sake that tastes like sake, filtered or not. I will do this again! I live in Oregon and this is wine country. You can visit 4 or 5 wineries every day for a year and never see the same one twice (I think that's probably an exaggeration but close to being true). It's the thing to take out of town visitors to a winery, but not anymore. Next time my guests will be sitting down for sake, and I'll bring lots of snacks so we can make an afternoon out of it. It's winter so tastings are inside. I liked that you needed a reservation as it is small inside with two tables that can handle 4-6 people and two that can only hold two people. In summer I think they have a lot of outdoor options. Clean and modern space and nicely spaced and helpful staff that wasn't snobby like some wineries can be. I don't know much about sake and feel I understand a bit more now. Bottles seem to be competitive with prices we have seen at Whole Foods for their brand so we bought one. There was also a nice sunset as we left with a distant view of Mt. Hood. For something different we recommend trying it out. read more

While I can't say that I am much of a sake fan, I was willing to go tasting here, in hopes of changing my mind a little. It did. Not for the plane sake's, which still taste like vodka to me, but the flavored sakes were nice. My favorite was the plum, but the Asian Pear ran a close 2nd. The coconut was good too. Kind of tasted like those coconut milk drinks. The people who worked here were very nice and it's a lovely place. I had no idea where Forest Grove was (and I've lived here all my life!) so I was shocked by how many wineries were out there! If for no other reason, stop here for the great prices and flavored sakes! And by great prices, I am referring to the $7 flights of 6 sakes!! That is unheard of! So go, just to say you went and conquered rice wine! read more

What a cute little Sake Brewery. I first saw it on Instagram and it grabbed my attention. Last year, I finally got the opportunity to try this place. It is a good place to go with friends, family or just by yourself. I personally like it because I never actually bothered to drink Sake and it's super expensive in California. The result is me taking the time to drive my van up to the brewery and taking the time to taste the cool flavors that they have to offer. They offer flavors that range from the traditional to the fruity type. Just because I am a noob at Sake the person who served me did an excellent job of helping me explore which one is the best. If you come here your mind will change instantly about your relationship with Sake. They even serve some cool food during sponsored events. Just be sure to book ahead. Everything they offer here is worth it. Oregon-ic indeed. Drawback: I wish I actually bought a bottle to take home but being a broke college grad from California really holds me back. Very sad we missed the tour by 15 minutes..we were visiting Portland from Ca... and we the sakeOne tasting caught our attention..Only downside is that it was so far....Mainly side streets to get there and it took almost an hour, plus it was raining!!! But once we got there it was well worth it. The workers were so kind and she educated us on all sorts of sake. We were able to differentiate a big difference between the different types of sake...both filtered and unfiltered. Wish there were more sake tasting rooms available in general. The tastings were $5 and I ended up leaving with a bottle of Plum sake. Very good dessert type of Sake when chilled. read more

Attended a sake and food pairing with a member of their club so this was my first time. The setting and weather were perfect. Each one of the varieties of sake was explained nicely. The Thai food pairing was a great match. Over all experience was great and would highly recommend it. And yes a sake brewer in Oregon wine country! We also went through the tour of the brewery, very interesting. The place is spotless. the only small nit picky thing was the tour seemed a bit rushed, but it did hit all the big points and since this was a club member's event, maybe is was abbreviated. Last stop was the tasting room, wanted to try some of the Nama -unpasteurized sake, that you can only get at a brewer. It was lively and very good. Oh, and they sell growlers! So glad I did the sake tastings I live in sushi restaurants and thought I disliked sake. Now I understand that the sakes I've tasted were cheap and bad and that there are delicious sakes. I enjoyed the flight of 6 so much that I returned the following day to taste 6 different selections. My favorites are g fifty and g joy, with g fifty having a "kick" reminiscent of bourbon. Because I appreciate both dry and sweet wines, my other favorites are Momakawa Pearl and Organic Junmai Ginjo, both of which are sweet, and the three I call dessert wines (Moonstone pear, plum and coconut). Moonstone plum is extremely sweet. Located in charming Forest Grove. Visit F G Sushi for lunch. Visit the historic downtown, which has a lot of character, and enjoy lunch or a pastry at Maggie's Buns. Visit Lincoln Park which contains the tallest barber pole in the world. No beautiful views here, since SakeOne is not located in a vineyard. read more

Randomly stumbled upon this place while wine tasting in Oregon on vacay last weekend. Very fun and surprising find. Tessa was fantastic, and knowledgable about all things sake. She definitely made our experience that much better. We ended up taking the tour, which was super informative and then spent the afternoon drinking sake, eating from our custom charcuterie basket and enjoying the Oregon weather, as it's much (much much much) cooler than LA right now. I do recommend you try this place, if you're ever in the area. I'm not a huge sake drinker, so I went with the flavored tastings and walked away with a bottle of plum sake to enjoy during the holidays. Definitely a unique experience worth the trip out to Forest Grove! I believe it is still the only American-owned Sakeria (at least it was the last time I visited a few years back). They do very affordable flights of sake: 4 for $3 or 6 for $5 (pro-tip: if you go in a big group, they will upcharge you $2/pp for whatever flight you'd like). There was a wide variety from chilled clear (almost like a vodka) to milky flavors (including plum, coconut, and pear). Just like in wine tasting you go dry to sweet, light to dark. The staff was very friendly and helpful in explaining to us what we were trying and how they were made. I'd also recommend a tour - or a Saketini Saturday stop! They do great little events here including ones tied to the Chinese New Year and also food drives and related things. Also, it's definitely not as far of a drive as you'd have to make for the rest of wine country, so why not try it out?? :) read more

Okay, so, full disclaimer here, and then I'll get into why my disclaimer hasn't affected my rating or review: I'm a SakéOne Shareholder, and have been for 14 years. Yep, my money's in that company somewhere. So, you could say, I've been to this Saké party a couple times now... That said, here's where 5*'s comes from: Absolutely. Freakin'. Incredible. Saké. Period. I count myself privileged to live three miles from SakéOne, and love to swing through on occasion to load up on a couple bottles, and sip some nice tastes. I consider this to be the best American-made Saké, and it does rival many of the Sakés I've had from Japan. In his review several days back, Don B. pretty much summed up what I'd say, so, uh, yeah, "What he said..." Basically, they have Sakés for everyone across the board. The purists will love their top-of-the-line "G-Joy", their Organic Ginjo (very smooth and flavorful) and their Nigori Genshu (these are roughly-filtered, heavier-bodied sweet sakés that look like milk). Newbies may prefer to start with their Moonstone "infused" sakés, basic (Junmai Ginjo) sakés with fruit infusions: Plum, Asian Pear, and my favorite, the Coconut-Lemongrass which uses a Nigori Genshu (cloudy, thick) base. Their standard line of premium Sakés includes Diamond and Silver (both dry), Ruby (softer, with more berry and tropical notes), and Pearl (cloudy, sweet, great with spicy dishes). You can find many of their sakés at better grocery stores and markets. Tasting room open 11:00 to 5:00 daily, with several tours each day. They have events one or more Saturdays each month. It's a great and unique diversion from the 300+ wine tasting rooms in the area. Stop on by and have a few sips. Or a glass, or some bottles. read more

This is a dramatization of a conversation I had with a friend. It went absolutely nothing like this. Names have been changed to protect nobody. Me: So, there is a saké brewery out in Forest Grove. Want to go there on Saturday to drink some saké? Biff: There's a saké brewery in Forest Grove? I had no idea. Me: I told you about this place awhile ago and you told me you wanted to go. Going senile already? Biff: Who are you? Me: Exactly. So, off to SakéOne we went. The directions said it was 30 minutes west of Portland. It took a bit longer as once you get off of 26 there are many twists and turns. All the more to quench your saké thirst. When we arrived we walked inside and up to one of the tasting bars. We inquired about tours and were told that one would be starting up within 20 minutes. Perfect timing. The tasting menu was presented to us and we decided to go with the Saké Shock tasting which paired 5 different sakés with 5 different foods. On this day the pairings were as follows. Momokawa Draft Nama paired with Italian Proscuitto, G "joy" paired with Smoked Salmon Pate, Momokawa Organic Junmai Gingo paired with Sesame Honey Almonds, Moonstone Asian Pear paired with Briar Rose Creamery Rosemary and Peppercorn Chevre and finally Moonstone Coconut Lemongrass paired with Madras Coconut Curry Popcorn. This tasting costs $10. The other tastings are less. The guy who was serving us gave us all of the info on Saké that we could want. He was very knowledgeable and friendly and answered all the questions we had. Even the stupid ones. He was also the same guy who gave the tour. The tour is insightful and well worth the 15 of 20 minutes. I've been on winery and brewery tours and they are all very similar, but this is slightly different. Anyway, we weren't quite finished with our food or tasting as the tour was starting and the staff was very friendly and put our food in the back so that we could finish up once we were back from the tour. Once back from the tour we continued with our tasting and once done with that we were asked a few times by the staff if we needed anything or had any questions. They were very attentive and no pressure was put on us to leave the table we were sitting at. I ended up buying a few bottles to take home. Saké doesn't age, so it is best to drink sooner than later. Last year I came out to SakeOne and had a really wonderful time with the previous Hospitality Manager who served me. This recent experience, was quite the opposite. I arrived with a friend who was visiting from out of state, and I was raving to him how awesome this little sake tasting room was. Only to be greeted by a woman who only looked displeased that we showed up. We sat outside and ordered our sake flights. When we asked any questions about how sake was made, or to tell us more about the ones on our flights, we were told to look at the sheets in front of us, and this little booklet. There was no joy, or sense of passion coming from this woman, only the feeling that we weren't welcome or worth her time. We were so poorly disappointed with this whole experience that we just ended up going to a nearby winery and tried to forget it all. Pro tip to the business owner; when you're in a space where you don't have the best view and your serving tastings out of little plastic ramekins instead of glassware, having staff that can really take pride in hospitality makes the space what it is. (Which is why I returned this time around, because my first experience was amazing) But this time, maybe the older gal workin was having a bad day, or maybe she just hates her job. If you are a saké lover, you will love SakéOne! They have a huge assortment of flavors and they have great deals, especially if you should decide to become a member- $35 per quarter for up to 4 people (which we did!). Normally, it would've cost $15 for the tasting we chose. Since we became members, the tasting fee was waved plus we were given 3 bottles of sake! We also bought 2 other bottles of saké . We left with a total bill of $50 and that included the membership and all five bottles! Woohoo! We also met Steven (Stephen?) who was awesome and told us all about the saké we tasted! Great experience to visit here -- if you go on the tour just be prepared that it can get hot in there! We ended up leaving the tour group early because it was too hot and we also wanted to start on our sake tasting before the big rush of people when the tour ends. We had 4 tastings and also got to sample one of their saketinis. Our favorite was the plum-infused sake -- really nice color and taste to it. We also bought one of the sake sets that had panda faces painted on them. The best experience is to probably go on a weekday as the weekends can get quite busy. read more
