Just picked up a custom board. Ed did a beautiful job, just exactly what I wanted. He set it up for me, had a great conversation about the state of the surf business and craftsmanship in today's world, not many left, if you want a hand made board by a real craftsman and not some Chinese factory, come see them. Earlier this year I ordered a custom board from Lost, 15 weeks later I got it, Ed had my board in 2 weeks. The staff was great as well, his daughter even answered me while on holiday. Horrible customer service. After two mistakes were made, I decided to just return an item. The Asst manager wanted to flex his attitude. He offered no assistance and wouldn't return the item. This is a great shop. Its small but very friendly staff. I went in to look around the first time. I was shopping for a new board but hadn't decided where to buy it. After checking out a few other of the "big name" places I returned the next week. I already had in mind what I wanted to buy but kinda played a little dumb to see what the staff set me up with. They were right on. The exact board I had in mind. I bought a 6'2 cameleon and I love it. they set me up with some great fins and everything was at a fair price compared to what I had looked at in some of the other shops. I feel like I got a top of the line board at a great price. I bought with confidence knowing I had a trial period with the board as well. I had no need to bring it back. Thanks guys love your store. Sakal rocks!!! By chance I bought a used Sakal board this summer and loved it so I went and bought a new Sakal "Flying Monkey" and am totally stoked. Sakal boards have rejuvenated my love for surfing. The guys/gal that work at the shop are totally cool and helpful...Shawna, Andrew, Andy and Shea, plus they throw in a few extras and they make the buying experience a breeze. The vibe you get when you go there is very friendly and genuine so even if you're a beginner and feel a lil intimidated, don't sweat it. I brought the Fam with me there several times and they thought the shop was way cool, plus I'm slowly teaching them the way of the surf. Anyway, I plan on having a quiver of Sakals and am getting there with 3 new boards so far (Flying Monkey, Wasp and Stub). In my humble opinion, Sakal isn't a terrible shaper, but he isn't a great one. The glassjobs are what really bring this company down (one of my friend's shortboards is horrendous, the rails are peeling off), but I also think they have a very kooky style as far as their board artwork and resin coloring go. Sales are obviously suffering, as they are the only company I know that does trade-ins, because they probably have a better chance of selling a popular brand used board than a brand new one of theirs. read more

THE BEST surf shop in OC hands down !!! Ed the owner and shaper is fantastic. Super nice guy, knowledgable, and really helpful. I used the trade in program and got a great deal on a 7'0" Gyroll. I took it out and it was even better than I expected and and rides just like Ed said it would. They have a great guarantee and stand behind their product. This is how business should be done. Grew up on short boards and transitioned into longboard. Came into Sakal looking for a performance board that paddled and got into waves quicker. Shawna Sakal listened to my situation and helped me find the right board - she even called her pops to make sure we got the length right. Great price on beautiful board (with fins!), and all sorts of discounts on accessories. They even offer a two week "trial" period - you no like - Get a custom built for you! First wave I paddled for with the new stick - I caught. Nice head high C-street w a little power that was a couple hundred yards. Guess thats a good start. Had an annoying experience in there today. Browsed for a few minutes, then on my way out, some employee stopped my friend and me pitched his surf lessons. We weren't interested and tried to leave, so he decided to find out how good of a surfer I was, so he could evaluate for himself whether I needed his assistance or not. He pretty much literally dragged us to the boards in the back and started asking questions like "how do you get up on a board?" (wtf, are you kidding), then he pointed to the ground and said "no, show me." (with other customers watching). It was literally such a douchey moment -- being told to get on the floor of your store when I was literally trying to leave. I'd just finished surfing north of the pier for three hours and didn't need to hit the carpet, and being forced into a demo was the height of unprofessional. Just because its a surf shop doesn't mean you can slack on respect for your customers. Maybe you shape some good boards, but it's hardly the only option on the coast. Pass. read more
