It's a hit or miss depending on who is working. At times the staff is helpful and patient, other times the staff is dismissive and act like you are wasting their time. If you know what you want you can come in and purchase no issues. However if you have questions or need a some feedback on a purchase, good luck. Katin surf shop on PCH & Anderson saved the day! Fourth of July weekend heading out to Two Harbor's & I left my weekend bag at home. Luckily, Katin was open. I headed there from Peter's Landing to get a few staple pieces: shorts, tanks and a bikini bottom (I was already wearing a bikini top). They had bikini bottoms on a sale rack, and I picked up a few outfits to get me through the holiday weekend. I was a first time customer and excited when I purchased one of their T-shirts. A shipping label was created for the shipment the following day after i placed my order. A week later the package had not been shipped! I sent a email and also left a voicemail message and no one got back to me! I finally contacted their customer service dept who shipped the package 2 day delivery! When I received the package the t-shirt was the wrong size I had ordered! I had pretty much the same experience as Billy E. A day or 2 after the order was placed a shipping label was printed, then I patiently waited 4 weeks and heard nothing from the company. I tried to email them and call them and I didn't hear anything back. Finally, I left a message on their Instagram and the rep who manages the Instagram account was able to get their attention. They emailed me the next day with a bunch of excuses and told me the item was no longer in stock. Then they issued me a refund. I would highly recommend people to look elsewhere. read more

I prefer to go to the local shaper for boards but I have visited this store to just take a look as I just sold off most of my quiver and was considering just picking a board off the rack (as opposed to waiting two months for a custom.) Each time I go here no-one sees you. You feel invisible. A while ago I sold them two used boards (popular brands at the time,) they announced a price (pretty small) but at the register the brilliant manager decided to shave off an additional forty dollars. I just thought how cheap are they that they have to pull something like that (LOL!) The reason I gave the store two stars and not one is because they carry Stamps boards and I like Stamps and Mayhem and once I saw some Hawaiian boards. Nice staff! I've been hunting for a small wave board for Bolsa and Seal, and stopped at Katin after going to Harbour, Inflight, and Bruce Jones. Everybody was really friendly and willing to answer my kooky questions. When I went to Katin, though, I came across a beautiful 7 footer made by a shaper named Mark McConnell. It was a piece of art on the level of Takayamas and McCallums. At the shop, Nick answered all my questions and gave me great, friendly service. It took me a few weeks (and flat surf) to do it, but I eventually got the McConnell. Nick was again friendly and helpful throughout the process. Support your local shops and shapers! I have a haydenshapes epoxy short board that I really like, but it's nowhere near the piece of art like the McConnell. The McConnell was the same price as one of the mctavish mini mals that I was looking at by Global Surf, but again, the artistry is unmatchable. And the glassing on the McConnell is much better. Deck and fin patches, plus a hand painted fin and a glassed on leash loop. Katin has a long history as a local surf shop, so I was happy to purchase the board, bag, and leash from them too. read more

This shop has been here since the 50's, take your time and study the old photos of all the local surf legends who used to wear Katin trunks. Nancy Katin passed on many years ago but her original seamstress , Sato Hughes , still sews here several days a week (see pic). The surf trunks are top quality and handmade to last. The staff respects the surf history here and is helpful with anything you need to get wet, I love the board selection and they are even selling Bruce Jones boards made by his son ( Bruce was another local legend who passed too soon). I love this shop and sometimes I just like to stop in and soak up the positive vibes. This is my go to surf shop, I also like Harbour in Seal and HSS on Main in HB but this place is special. I have a love/hate relationship with "progress". While I'd be the first to champion my love for a cancer cure, whenever they pave a paradise for a parking lot, I feel like nuking a parking lot. But I'm out of the nuke department these days and would rather peacefully co-exist with everybody. Katin Surf Shop is a progress measure of the love kind. When my brother and I returned to California in the 60's, all we wanted to do was become what the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean and numerous other "surf generation" musicians defined in song and dance for pre-teen surfer wannabes. While inland kids were stuck on whatever they did, we followed whatever trend rolled with the surf culture in a post-beat, pre-hippie generation of bleached-blond, surfboard-toting, decal-covered ragtop driving kids that threw all responsibility or care right out the window. The movie Big Wednesday was us and I was on the fast track to premature pregnancy with some salt-headed, fast-talking water rat and the Big Kahuna of our clan saved my virginity from a certain wipeout. The icons of the day are much too numerous to recount but the movement swept the nation like a tidal wave swept to shore and as quickly as the tide receded, so too did the surf trend. I remember clearly when that happened for me. It was the beginning of the hippie era and a dude named Jimi sang the infamous line "And never to hear surf music again". I didn't really know who Hendrix was at that time but almost overnight, the surf phenomenon went from mainstream to downstream...and I lit my first stick of incense. During this whole period, one thing remained true and steady and that was Kanvas by Katin in Surfside, CA. My brother, along with thousands of other young surf brats had to strut their stuff with board shorts hand-made by Nancy Katin no matter what the cost. Since the 50's, the Katins have provided surfers with strong, tough surf wear and though both the Katins are long gone, the shop and it's products continue to provide the materials for wave-riding and today the shop is packed with everything one might need to satisfy the surf itch. Board shorts, wetsuits, sandals, hoodies, shirts, skirts and surfboards fill the space. And "progress"? If you're so concerned about protecting your bottom line, but you could run 1-2 clerks talking amongst themselves not 4. Product selection is limited (as expected) for surf shorts and branded sweat shirts and shirts. Won't be back. Katin has always been my go-to surf shop for all of my surf needs. The customer service has always been top-notch. I came in my first time to purchase a wet suit and spoke with Kim. After the staff had an answer to every one of my questions when making my purchase, I became a customer for life. I've been back numerous times since and have always received the same, AMAZING service. It's really nice to know that if I ever have questions about a product I want to buy, I can always rely on Katin to make sure my money is invested properly. And the prices are incredibly fair! Along with taking all your measurements and customizing any length and patch you want, you even get to pick your own fabric color(s). High quality fabric and work. Great experience and I've been wearing same pair for 4 years. Going to Cabo again and my daughter suggested a new pair with new colors. I have had Katin T shirts in the past that fit well. The current selection of Men's T shirts run small. Not sure why. Seems like it is a hassle for the company to refund people's money over and over. Likewise, need to keep track on this for the future I order to get Ts that fit from them. Or, just move on to another brand. Shirts are good quality with good designs. Just not worth the hassle. The very nice young man at the desk went in the back, brought out an extra leash and gave it to me for free! I will never go back if they are there. They are far too judgmental to be in customer service! There shouldn't be the dime a dozen hipster sizing you up while u make a significant purchase. So Katin Surf Shop right on PCH. Excellent store. When I first moved to California I was tutoring for this family of surfers. I'm not going to give their names out but the father was real cool. When ever we would talk about surfing he would tell me I have to avoid all the corporate stores like "Spyder" and "Jack's" He would say to me : " MAAAAAAN, You gotta go to Katin, thats the only surfshop with SOME SOUL!" Then he handed me some Katin stickers. I was like an advertizement for Katin anytime you stepped into my old room in Torrance. You know what ?He was right! What I like best about Katin is the clearance rack right outside. I could easily drop between $50 and $100 on board shorts and T-Shirts and REALLY stock up. The feel is right. Maybe you shouldn't go on a weekend but I went in to buy some futures and they were so unhelpful I probably shouldn't have graced them with my money. If its a surf shop you should be able to ask about surf equipment but no help from the staff (if you're going to compete with the internet then personal service should be something that sets you apart). So I realize that 90% of their sales are probably hoodies and trunks and maybe they get 5 stars for that but if you are looking for a knowledgeable staff keep driving down the pch to the next surf shop. read more

I have passed this surf shop for years now and never stopped in. Well yesterday (10-04-2012) I was on my way to pick-up a new board further down the street and figured I would stop in and check this place out. I was looking for 4.3 wetsuits and dug the selection Katin offered. The staff was very knowledgeable & helpful with assisting me in searching for what I was looking for. I do dig the high end wetsuits but at the end of the day you are still going into the Ocean with them and over time high end or not the salt water will eat away at the suit and you will need a new one so to me the best bet is to shop online and get a $150 special. I will say Katin had a HUGE selection of suits for the TOP TOP TOP of the line to just above the bottom shelf items. I dig check out the wide selection of boards, board bags & socks that Katin offered. This surf shop is definitely what you expect a surf shop to look like not in a bad way. I am in the area often and will definitely be back to check out more of what they have to offer. As they say whenever you stop a surf shop either buy wax or pick-up some stickers to make sure the independent surf stores stay in business so that is exactly what I did, I picked up some stickers for a little home decoration. Awesome small surf shop on the way to the beach. Great selection of clothes and trunks made right in-house for many many years. It's great to be able to own a part of surf history with Katin shorts that are still made in house to this day- pricing is very reasonable and there are always sales going on. I get all my surf clothes, sandals, and trunks here. They have great deals and selections... especially for a local mom and pop shop. Places like this can be a little intimidating when youre not a surfer. No problemo, mi compadres... Although I wish I was toting more cash when we went into this surf shop! The selection of shorts, shirts, jackets and flipflops was amazing! Bought a hoody ($30) for my daughter whos freezing her little ass off in San Fran and was close to purchasing some board shorts for myself ($50). On another day. Place was busy with a younger crowd just hangin out on a weekday?... Schools already out in Seal Beach? Oh, I know, kids get a week off for Halloween now, right? I really enjoy visiting this store. They usually have lots of sale items out on the weekend and there's always good things to be found. They have a great selection of beach wear, surf gear, boards, and clothes! The people working in the store are generally a younger crowd and never harass you when looking around. Went in to Katin and walked out with sunglasses and a new suit. I love their selection of bikinis - a lot of cheekier bottoms but some fuller coverage as well. They carry Amuse Society (both clothing and swim) which I love and even some workout gear. The store had a really relaxed environment and I never felt pressured to buy anything. I like shopping local stores more because they typically have a better vibe than chain stores. Plus the staff is super friendly and helpful. I have been coming to Katin for years for sunglasses shirts, hoodies etc. The staff is super laid back, Glenn is great and of course having a living legend Sato-San still in the shop making custom shorts, seriously just awesome. I went in last nigh Buttercup wanted a new shirt or hoodie and I wanted to get something to send back east to my nephew. As always we are greeted on arrival. we look around find what we need. We are treated well at check out, exactly what I like, I do not need somebody following me around while I look for a t-shirt. read more

You can come here for the whatever brand of surf "lifestyle" wear is currently hip. But if you're really hip, you head to the back corner and go straight for the Katin stuff. Kontender baggies have been made since 1959 in this very shop. And they still are. Every pair of Kontenders I've ever purchased over the past 30 years are still in great shape. The Kanvas material gets better and softer with age and wear. I was digging through the racks of Kontenders and Mrs. Sato Hughes (owner and seamstress at Katin since 1961) came over and said hi, and told me to come over to the sewing room after I was done to get a patch sewn on my trunks. There are few opportunities to get original surf goods, straight from the source anymore. Most everything is owned by mega-corporations, and made in Indonesia or China, and you can find it in department stores worldwide. Which makes shopping at Katin all the more special. This is history. Parking for this place is crap, you could get killed, take a chance that your bucket will get towed and park next door. Ok, this is the only place you should be buying board trunk's for all you kooks out there "swim trunks". They survive, outlast seasons of abuse from the polluted waters of southern Cali. You could be scrapping skin off your bum from going over the falls at the Wedge and still look cool wearing a pair of Katins.
