Hidden gem. Although - get here early to get a table. Fresh. Flavorful. Authentic. "Real crab" options. Local. As in they knew many of their patrons the night I visited. Sake Blue is worth the drive from Danville and Walnut Creek. Yup. I came in from SF to try their sushi. If you're looking for fresh authentic Japanese sushi, sake blue is your answer 5-stars.

Good local sushi spot! We came here for early dinner on a Friday and there were plenty of seating available. My husband got a chirashi bowl and I went with the nigiri / sashimi combo. We also shared an Orinda roll with salmon but I would have been full with my main. The fish was pretty fresh and there was a good variety of different types. We also got two beers and ended up spending a little over $100 the two of us. Overall, good spot if you're craving some sushi

My parents have raved about this place for ages, so now that I've moved back to the area, I finally had to give it a try for lunch! I ordered the lunch bento box ($22) to-go through their website. While online payment isn't available yet, you can pay at pickup. The estimated wait time was 35 minutes, but my dad assured me they'd be quicker--closer to 15 minutes--and to my surprise, he was right! I waited in my car and got a text when my order was ready. The lunch bento offers a great selection--you pick two items, and it comes with a salad, miso soup, and two pieces of gyoza. I went with the five-piece sashimi and beef teriyaki. The sashimi was the highlight--fresh and flavorful. The beef was tender, though the teriyaki sauce was a bit on the watery side (not overly sweet, which I appreciated). The miso soup, however, could use a little more miso paste for a richer taste. Overall, a solid meal at a good price! Glad to have a quality sushi spot in Orinda.

This is the first time we stopped by to try this newer Japanese restaurant. We ordered 3 bento boxes to go that come with salmon teriyaki, sushi rolls, rice, gyoza, miso soup, and rice. The salad had a carrot ginger dressing that I never tried before and loved it. It's such a unique taste that I need to try it again. All the food was fresh and tasty. We will be back again.

UPDATE 3 Okay I've gone here 6 times by now. Just as fresh every time, delicious sashimi and rolls! I tried the sake don last time and it was a good amount of sashimi! PS I love Angel!

Really reasonable priced and good food in a chill casual spot. I liked the Sake Blue roll and Summer Special (quail egg, oyster, ikura shooter basically). The fish was good quality on the nigiri- but they put WAY too much rice. But that's an easy fix while eating. Will surely return.

They have great food, great service! They are cute family business. Fresh Sashimi and yummy roll.

I would recommend ordering at least a week in advance for sushi platters.

This is a little gem of a restaurant with a cute interior dining area with television for people watching the FIFA games, a good bar selection of you imbibe, and a delightful patio where you can sit under a covered awning. The place has a small parking lot along the side of the restaurant located in the back. If you're shopping at Whole Foods or Mount Diablo Foods, this restaurant is located down the street from them on a side street on Lafayette Circle. I spoke to the owner, they only use the best quality sushi: Atlantic King salmon, bluefin tuna, the shrimp is cooked here, white tuna is from Korea, the onso hamachi is from Hokkaido. The onagi is high end, and ordered from Thailand. There are two other Kiku Sushi & Vegetarian locations, one is located in north Berkeley, 1416 Gilman Street, Berkeley, CA, and one is located at 538 Valencia Street, San Francisco. The food is absolutely delicious, nicely presented, and the sashimi is cut into very thick slices. I ordered my favorite go-to dish, chirashi sushi, and a specially ordered eel handroll with rice and veggies. The matcha tempura ice cream was delicious, too. You must absolutely come and try out this place, they play relaxing, nice jazz music in the background, it was good for a very nice before-the-250th-anniversary of our country, the 4th of July! I wasn't sure if the high ratings were just because Berkeley's sushi scene tends to lean more casual, but Kiraku completely exceeded my expectations. It reminded me of the izakayas I loved in Vancouver and Toronto--thoughtful dishes, great flavors, and that cozy, lively energy that makes you want to order one of everything. Pretty much every dish hit. The A5 wagyu with uni was a banger. The tako wasabi was solid. The black cod literally melted in my mouth. The mini kaisen donburi was packed with premium ingredients and so delicious. Extra points because they actually deep-fry the shrimp heads too, which I love. Overall, Kiraku is a must-try and I'd recommend it to anyone in the Bay Area.

Inside is definitely cozy and you'll be sitting fairly close to the tables next to you. Service was really fast and easy - no complaints at all! The food was all great. Standouts were garlic edamame, 6pc omakase, beef tongue, pork belly, negitoro maki, corn tempura, & sweet potato creme brulee. Edamame was lightly charred and salted well, with generous amount of garlic flavor. Omakase was fresh and tasty, although a tiny bit small so definitely perhaps get your own instead of sharing one order between two. Beef tongue was hands down the best thing. I thought it was a boneless short rib with how tender it was (can break apart with chopsticks). The pork belly was also soft and went well with the spicy miso. Negitoro was fresh and the wasabi was grated very well. Corn tempura was perfectly fried and very crispy while still being soft inside. Lastly, the creme brulee was a great dessert. You do get a hint of the sweet potato. Would love to return to try other dishes!

A simple menu allows the customers to order quickly and for the restaurant to crank out the items for fast turnover. As others have mentioned, it's less of an Omakase and more of a sushi or sashimi set. Mujiri definitely have their business model set up well in practice. The thing that has always been lacking has been the service. Through my three times here, dine in and take out guests are always waiting until they get some attention from whichever staff gets flagged down while they're in the middle of something else. During my most recent visit, the order predicted an online pick up of 40-50 minutes. I ended up taking my time leaving the gym and arrived at the 40 minute mark. Waited around and noticed my delivery ETA shifted for another 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes were up I tried to flag a staff, and they told me it would be another 15 minutes. Through watching the orders, they had obviously not even started on my order yet. It was literally 30 minutes before closing when I got my order. It also didn't make sense as there wasn't much turnover for the dine in customers. They definitely need a better system as it was apparent that me and five other parties easily waited an additional 30 minutes each with no real explanation. It's unacceptable for a restaurant to neglect customers or giving timely updates and expect a disingenuous apology would make up for it. I admit that I like that offerings, but for the actual quantity and poor service, this place is severely overrated.

The lunch menu is small but with enough variety, and the much larger regular menu includes lunch prices. However, they need to clean up their act a little, both figuratively and literally. I'm pretty sure the chalkboard sign in front showed closing times earlier than on their own website. The website online ordering page says the menus aren't available, though scrolling down did reveal them. On the literal side, the bathroom needs attention, as other reviewers have said. I wouldn't have quite called it dirty and didn't hesitate to use it, but it was definitely shabby. The tile floor was discolored around the edges, the sink could have used a deep clean, and the soap dispenser was empty--a bottle of hand soap was propped up on a rail. Overall, it's a good effort and I probably would eat there again, though I'd examine my food based on some of the negative reviews--food safety isn't something I want to mess around with, and especially not for sushi.
