Our friend ordered the Lobster California Roll with soy paper instead of nori, and after all the years I've been eating sushi I had never seen anyone do that. We copied him. Delicious, and the best thing on our table. First visit for us at Toyosu, over on Locust in Walnut Creek right next to Matsu. The sushi menu runs deep, from straightforward nigiri up to omakase and A5 wagyu, and the quality was very good across everything we ordered. Long sake list too, plus beer and wine by the glass or bottle. Plan around the size of the room. Small place. If you want to sit down without waiting, be there when they open, otherwise expect around 30 minutes. Parking is paid street parking with a big garage nearby, so you won't circle for long. Service was the standout. Nothing was open inside when we arrived, so we took the covered patio out front, and they asked whether we'd want to move indoors if a table opened. We said yes and ordered. A spot freed up after our first round and they came straight over and moved us. Doing that on a full night, unprompted, is not nothing. Noise was better than I expected. The room fills up, but we talked normally the whole meal. Ask for the soy paper wrap. Not printed anywhere on the menu, but clearly an option, and a good change if you're tired of nori. Bring someone who's actually into sushi and order wide. We'd go back. read more

The service was really fast, and everyone working there was friendly. Everything tasted fresh and was well made. What we didn't realize before going is that they have a very unique menu. They don't really serve the classic sushi rolls we were expecting. We mainly went because my daughter really wanted sushi, but unfortunately she didn't like the options they had and barely ate anything. I also found the portions on the small side. The prices themselves weren't unreasonable, but they felt a bit high for the amount of food you get. That said, I personally enjoyed what I ordered. It just wasn't the kind of sushi experience I was expecting. Strolled into to Toyosu for lunch and got the Hokkaido don and chirashi lunch special to share with my mom. The fish was fresh and tasty. I especially loved their salmon in each of the bowls. It tasted nice and fatty and creamy. I loved the other fish as well though! I also felt that they did their tamago very well. Typically when I get tamago I feel like other restaurants don't get the texture correct and it can come out overcooked/rubbery so I don't end up finishing it. The tamago here was the perfect texture and the flavor/sauce made it really delicious. The texture of the rice in each bowl was great as well. The servers were both really nice and attentive throughout our meal which is always appreciated. I highly recommend sitting outside on the patio if the weather is good! The freshness of the fish seemed pretty good. I also had a cold beer with it which helped. What happened, Toyosu? This used to be our go-to sushi roll take out restaurant, but after one last disappointing experience tonight, we are officially done. I don't mind paying their high prices for fresh sushi, but the quality of their fish has been really bad. My fingers still smell fishy from picking off the "salmon" off the Honey Sake roll, which was basically a 2 mm thick piece of brown meat and not a real piece of sushi grade salmon. I still have a fishy after-taste in my mouth despite brushing my teeth. If this was a one-off experience, I would brush it off. However, when only one take-out order has been good out of the past 6-7 orders, it is time to move on. I wouldn't even try the new Yakitori restaurant they opened next door. I just hope I don't get food poisoning as my stomach is cramping right now. Hugely disappointed. read more

Came in for dinner and was seated right away. The place is small and intimate and has about 10-12 tables. I can easily see this place filling up during meal hours. This place is a solid sushi spot. Very interesting menu here! There's a lot of small bites that contain uni - something you don't see often in more suburban areas. And overall, the prices seemed quite reasonable for what you're getting as well! I ordered a Uni Tempura ($26) and Hokkaido Don ($35). The Uni Tempura included 4 pieces. Unfortunately, I found that once it was fried, the uni didn't taste like uni anymore :( The outside tasted like salt and vinegar chips. I guess uni just isn't meant to be fried, so this will just be a one time thing for me. The Hokkaido Don had a beautiful presentation, and I was pleasantly surprised to see uni and ikura and a good amount of fish for only $35! Definitely a great value meal. The uni wasn't the best quality though and had some bitter tastes to it, but I honestly wasn't expecting top tier uni at this price point, so I'm not complaining too much. My favorites were the smoked pieces, as well as anything that was a belly since it's fattier and more melt in your mouth. The restaurant is very small and they do not take reservations, but we walked in on a Friday evening and got seated immediately for a party of 5. We started with the agedashi tofu, which was solid, and I ordered the Sunshine Roll and O-Toro Nigiri for my main. While the quality of the fish was good, the portions were very small for the price--$19 for a six-piece roll and $17 for two tiny pieces of toro--leaving me both hungry and disappointed as I've been to other local sushi spots with the same quality fish, better portions. My friend's and I decided to check out a different sushi location in downtown Walnut Creek. This place is smaller then I am used to so if you have a big party you might have to give them a heads-up. We didn't have reservations and got lucky that a table was leaving just as we got there. One thing to note is that the whole party has to be there to be seated. We shared the poke tower and one other roll that I can't remember the name. I got the Chirashi bowl which was 5 stars! The rice to fish portion was perfect, the rice I believe had some seasoning, I want say either furikake or seaweed shavings. The fish was the perfect cut and it melted like butter when you bite into it. I will definitely go back just for Chirashi bowl. We have wanted to try Toyosu for awhile, but with only two (usually full) outside tables it took a rainy day for us to stop by. Food wise, I ordered the Farmers Market and an Avocado roll and both were amazing! The Farmers Market in particular tasted so bright while still being lightly savory. Their hot tea and Choya soda drink (lemon) were also fantastic, though our appetizer, the mixed tempura, wasn't a good fit. The vegetable choices were mostly nightshades, such as eggplant, pepper, and sweet potato, and didn't work for me as I'm nightshade free. The service was prompt and friendly and we enjoyed our meal. The katsu was very crisp and the dipping sauce was super fruity and flavorful. The sushi was very fresh tasing and was an nice addition to the full meal. The place is small and quiet, surrounded by othe small shops. There is a good amount of indoor seating and I believe the have outdoor available as well. I really enjoyed coming here, I just wish we got a little better service. We ran out of water after 15min and I had to waive down a person a few times for her to come over for us to get some more. One of the better sushi spots I've been to recently. They have a good variety of well-made rolls, but what got me thinking about coming back were the more sophisticated items on the menu - this is a spot with uni, ika, wagyu, and caviar if that's what you're looking for in the area (it's been a bit difficult for me ever since the owners of my fav spot moved states a few years back). I thoroughly enjoyed everything we had and will definitely return soon. The only thing I didn't love was the dessert, but I'd still be open to trying another one next time I'm in.
