The lunch set is only $14, and you can add another item for just $4, so you get a pretty filling meal without spending too much. I got the chicken katsu and salmon teriyaki. Everything tasted really fresh and was nicely prepared. The chicken katsu was definitely my favorite it was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and had great flavor. It's a good size restaurant and it was full. They have a bento box lunch special which is only $14, this is what's drawing in the crowd and it's a great deal. I had wanted California roll and tempura, but they said I had to order one item from each side of the special menu, so I chose the salmon instead from the "protein" side instead of having the roll. So in other words no special requests folks, I imagine if they allowed it folks would try to order two proteins. The mixed tempura had just one shrimp but was very tasty. One thing I must say about this restaurant is the sound level is very loud, it was hard to have a conversation without raising our voices. I've been here a few times! Plenty of parking, easy location to get to and the space has a decent amount of seating. Staff works really hard and food comes out quick. I'm not a sushi connoisseur but it tastes very fresh and at a decent price! Be prepared to wait about 20 minutes if you come during rush hour and don't have a reservation. Dined with family on Friday, June 12th. We had a reservation for a party of 6 at 6 PM; We arrived right on time and were seated within a couple of minutes. Several walk-in parties were waiting - I highly recommend making reservations, especially on weekend nights. It was a very busy Friday evening - the dining room was almost full when we arrived and it stayed full during our visit. The main dining room is a bright and open space with tables and a few booths. There is community table seating in the back room, and several seats at the sushi bar. After being seated, we were quickly served glasses of water. We then waited about 7-8 minutes without being greeted by anyone. It was hard to get someone's attention, so I went to the host station to let them know. It took a couple more minutes for someone to come to our table to take our order for drinks and a couple of food items. Over the course of our dinner, it seemed no server "owned" our table - we had several people take drink and food orders and different people bring stuff to the table. It looked like one of their challenges was a very heavy take out / delivery order business, and everyone was involved one way or another. The food was excellent, some of the best quality we've had in Walnut Creek. I recommend anything we had, which included: Edamame, Hamachi Nigiri (yellowtail), Maguro Nigiri (tuna), Saki Nigiri (salmon), Spicy Tuna Tamaki (handroll), Red Dragon Roll (unagi, avocado and cucumbers with tuna, salmon and green onion on top), Red Dress (unagi, mango, cream cheese, with deep fried shrimp and spicy tuna on top), and Salmon Roe with Quail Egg. Tanoshi Japanese Bistro is located in Citrus Center in the Valley area of Walnut Creek. It occupies the space previously home to Denica's Real Food Kitchen. My friend Steve and I checked out this spot on 07/18/2025. It was busy when we walked in at around 12:45pm. The wood-themed interior was stylish, bright, and clean. A couple TVs hung from the ceiling were showing different shows. We were seated in a booth away from the sushi bar. One of the servers brought us water and menus soon after. Their menu featured typical Japanese fare such as entrées, rolls, nigiris, etc. After some perusing, we decided to order a couple bento boxes. Prices were very reasonable. A 2-item bento box was $14 before T/T and a 3-item one was $18. Our food arrived in about 10 minutes. Both bento boxes came with miso soup, salad, pickled onions and daikon, and a couple orange slices. I had the 3-item one with tonkatsu, mixed tempura, and spicy tuna roll, and it was excellent! Everything tasted like they were freshly made. The tonkatsu had a nice crunch on the outside and the meat was moist and delicious. The tempura vegetables were all thickly cut and lightly battered. The spicy tuna roll had a great rice to filling ratio. I asked Steve about his food, and he told me he was very pleased with it. Service we received was very good. The staff were friendly and attentive. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. The comfortable setting, delicious food, great service, and fair price point...I think they covered it all!
