Came here for my coworker's birthday lunch. We made a reservation for 8 people at 12:15 PM on a Tuesday, and I'm glad we did because they get pretty busy during the lunch rush. I highly recommend making a reservation if you're coming with a larger group. The restaurant is quite spacious inside. Since our party was large, we were seated in a semi-private room. Another group was sharing the space with us, but it wasn't an issue and we still had a comfortable dining experience. Most of my coworkers ordered bento boxes, and the portions were very generous. I ordered the Salmon Lovers Roll and also tried a few of the other sushi rolls that we shared around the table. Overall, I've been wanting to try this place for a while since my coworkers have been raving about it, and it definitely lived up to the hype. I would absolutely come back again. The edamame was the only disappointment... the sauce was good but the edamame was pale and looked like it was over boiled. Gyoza was deep fried crisp and tasty. I ordered the combo with tonkatsu and tempura. Others had the beef teriyaki entree and another combo. The prices at Tanoshi are very reasonable for what you get. I saw an article about this place about how great the food was and what a great deal it was so our family just gave it a try and it didn't disappoint. The portion size you get with the meal was a lot of food the dinner meal was $18.00 but if you go for lunch that same meal is only $14.00 which is an amazing deal. Tanoshi Japanese Bistro is located in Citrus Center in the Valley area of Walnut Creek. It occupies the space previously home to Denica's Real Food Kitchen. My friend Steve and I checked out this spot on 07/18/2025. It was busy when we walked in at around 12:45pm. The wood-themed interior was stylish, bright, and clean. A couple TVs hung from the ceiling were showing different shows. We were seated in a booth away from the sushi bar. One of the servers brought us water and menus soon after. Their menu featured typical Japanese fare such as entrées, rolls, nigiris, etc. After some perusing, we decided to order a couple bento boxes. Prices were very reasonable. A 2-item bento box was $14 before T/T and a 3-item one was $18. Our food arrived in about 10 minutes. Both bento boxes came with miso soup, salad, pickled onions and daikon, and a couple orange slices. I had the 3-item one with tonkatsu, mixed tempura, and spicy tuna roll, and it was excellent! Everything tasted like they were freshly made. The tonkatsu had a nice crunch on the outside and the meat was moist and delicious. The tempura vegetables were all thickly cut and lightly battered. The spicy tuna roll had a great rice to filling ratio. I asked Steve about his food, and he told me he was very pleased with it. Service we received was very good. The staff were friendly and attentive. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. The comfortable setting, delicious food, great service, and fair price point...I think they covered it all! We love coming to Tanoshi Bistro after my son's soccer and swim classes. They are ALWAYS busy, so reservation (moreso for dinner) are highly recommended or you should expect a wait. I tend to get the dinner combo, which is plentiful and one of the best deals in town for dinner. Their servers are always nice and service is quick. I love their fish katsu, which you don't always fine at other "Japanese" places. I also like their saba shioyaki and chicken karaage (fried chicken). This place is legit and authentic. It's a must try and is family friendly. They also have a separate room for smaller parties, although I wouldn't call it private. We often get seated there if we don't have a reservation and it's sort of a communal/shared seating space. I'm fine with it! Pro tip: come during lunch for an even better price and less crowds. Had a quick lunch break at here and got lucky there was no line, even though I've heard it usually gets pretty busy. We started with the agedashi tofu, which is definitely the best I've had so far. The bento box lunch pricing is quite reasonable $14 for two items, $18 for three items and a $1 up charge to add Nigiri. Mom ordered the two item Beef Teriyaki and Mixed tempura. Beef was 3/5. Chewy and not much flavor. The tempura was a solid 4/5. As for me, three items, Sashimi (3 pcs Salmon). Mixed tempura, Nigiri (3 pcs Salmon, Maguro and Hamachi) sashimi 4/5, slices were thick and buttery, Nigiri, 4/5. Should have given another fish instead of the salmon again. Service was spot on, there was no wait. The restaurant was open spaced, you were not right on top of the neighboring table so it was quite comfortable. We have been here twice in July for the Lunch Bento boxes. Good food, good choices and excellent value. We ordered take-out. Between the two trips, we tried the Saba and California Roll Bento for my wife and Chicken Karaage and Mixed Tempura (no picture) for me. On the 2nd trip, my wife had Salmon and Chicken Karaage, and I had Chicken Katsu and Chicken Karaage. Both times, the food was very good and quick service by very nice staff. My wife was impressed by the serving size of the Saba. She was surprised by how small the piece of Salmon was on our 2nd visit. Both fish were tender, grill nicely and very good flavor. She liked the Tempura from the first visit and the Karaage. The salad was fresh with a flavorful dressing and the Miso soup was excellent with some tofu and seaweed. She said the California Roll was okay and will opt for the Karaage as the 2nd item in the bento box. I loved the Katsu and Karaage both were moist, great batter, excellent flavor and fried enough to a light crisp. I also enjoyed the tempura, miso soup and salads. Tanoshi is on our list as our go to for Japanese food. Interesting that I had not reviewed Tanoshi yet considering how often I visit the place, but no time better than the present! Tanoshi Japanese Bistro is located in one of the older shopping centers in the area where Nob Hill used to be located, and will be next to the soon-to-be Chick-fil-A, which also means perhaps the parking lot may get busier. Though it's a large parking lot, the spaces here always seem to be limited, so just be aware of that for parking during the peak times. Not sure if it's because Panda is right next door or Bevmo helping to take up spaces, but certainly not always easy to find parking closer when they get busy. On to the decor of the place. Tanoshi unlike your typical sushi spot, offers a much more spacious set-up, where the standalone tables are all spaced out quite far apart from each other, and there's also a backroom for larger parties and such if needed. They also offer booths for more intimate sitting, and they do have a sushi bar area as well, but I'll be honest, for people who are height impaired, it's a bit harder to sit there since the set is so far away from the actual bar. Just be aware of all the seating arrangements. Service here is always great. I have my usual server of course, and she is always very friendly and helpful, and the other servers are also great as well. The food here is generally quick, especially during lunch time with the lunch boxes. Food always comes out hot and fresh. Prices here are comparable, considering there are several other sushi spots all around the corner from them, they can certainly stack up well price wise to all the other places, even the one literally across the street from them. Some of the best value stuff here though I feel are indeed the lunch/dinner combinations, as you can choose from a good selection of things for great value. Lunch is a bit cheaper, and dinner cost a little more, but it's still reasonable when looking at bento combinations at other locations, and at Tanoshi they always come with soup and salad so that's nice. While the sushi here is priced well, some of the rolls are a bit more expensive, but they are delicious nonetheless. If you want the best bang for your buck and do a share roll with the table, I would recommend the Chef's Roll or the Cheat Day. One is a regular fish roll, the other one is a fried roll. Both rolls are priced well, and will just be one massive roll with a variation of different kinds of fish and approaches to different segments of the roll. That's right, I said segments. The Chef's Roll will be a bit hit or miss sometimes though depending on what they put in it at that specifically time, since it's just a random roll. There was one time I ordered it and it came with raw shrimp, but it didn't taste great, and the whole roll was like shrimp so that put a damper on my appetite, but the first time I ordered it with another group it was fantastic and everything in it was good. The bento boxes I won't go into too much, but I'll just call out some of my favorite combinations. Chicken karaage is always a good one to pick from. I usually also get the sashimi (and you can pick your protein), and depending on how I'm feeling that day either the Chicken Teriyaki or the California roll. Sometimes the tempura too. I've also tried some other things within the combination list, but so far these have been the most consistent winners. Overall, Tanoshi is a nice spot to visit for a good, casual, open space to enjoy your sushi dining. Just note, they do get quite busy at peak hours, so make sure to make a reservation in advance just in case through either Yelp or just call them up and they can make the reservation for you. read more

My HK boyz took me to Tanoshi in Walnut Creek, bc one of them knows the owner: I'm glad they did. We ordered a lot of food (not all pictured) - Fried calamari, chicken karaage, soft shell crab, salad, sashimi platter for 6, four rolls, one entree, and a large bottle of Dassai 45 ($58). All of the seafood was super fresh and nicely cut. Regarding the ambiance, they have a lot of tables, including larger ones like ours for 6. They don't cram tables and make it tight. The service from Kate the owner and her team was stellar. We were constantly being attended to. If you are in the East Bay, make the trek to Tanoshi for fresh seafood and great service. Took my friend here for her birthday and we had a great time. The booth they had for our reservation was a lovely spot for private conversation and spacious. The food came quick and we really enjoyed our rolls and apps. We ordered the soba noodles with tempura and it was a really solid choice. The noodles were perfectly cooked, the broth tasted great and the tempura was hot and crispy.
