Very small place which does a good business. A few people like to eat there. Several times that many like to order and then pick it up. I think they also do a big business in delivery. I really like to go to the Orinda Theater which is right across the street. The Orinda validates parking which is below the theater. The people are nice and the food comes out at a reasonable time. While Sushi Island satisfied my hunger it didn't satisfy me enough to want to come back. First off I feel like the host rushed me. The Nigiri and Philly rolls were okay. The two that stood out to me however were the garlic sauce that the Super Star special roll sits in, (seriously you could dip a flipflop in that sauce and I would eat it) as well as the Shrimp Tempura Roll. Those two were phenomenal! In addition I noticed some of the sushi chefs in the back weren't changing gloves or washing their hands in between prepping meals... yikes! I stopped here for lunch in this quaint town of Orinda, and was greeted m by a nice wait staff, who directed me to a table by the window. The menu had color photographs of man my of the rolls and dishes. It had a simple decor inside but nice music. There is a small sushi counter is you want to order directly with the sushi chef. The food came out pretty quickly, within 10 minutes, and this was a good place to stop for a meal. I would definitely come here again when I am out this way! read more

We did not order any sushi. We ordered beef tip ($14.50) and the two item bento box (3 pieces of sashimi and teriyaki chicken.) for $10.50, It came with miso soup which was slightly too salty for our taste. These are great prices for lunch. My hubby said the 3 pieces of sashimi was very fresh and oh so good. The chicken teriyaki was good - not dry. It came with a decent serving of ginger which is one of my favorite side dishes. Service was good and since we were the only ones there we actually finished in less than an hour. However, I was craving sushi the other night and decided to try a new place and man! This place is amazing, and I can't wait to go in person to get a sense of the in restaurant experience. Late post but I need to warn that we made a reservation through Yelp back on 3/6/26 for table of 4 at 6:15. When we arrived they had no record of the reservation. The place is small and all tables were taken. I showed them my confirmation text and they said we should've called. We stopped by on a Saturday evening, we sat by the bar, ordered a Bento box and two rolls, one was on the menu and the other one the chef (Alex) prepared for us after we told him what we liked, and we enjoyed that sushi the most, he said that it's a titanic with a little twist , the other sushi roll was great as well, everything was fresh, service was on point, they did everything on front of us, the sashimi was great too. The portions were generous , we couldn't even finish the bento between two, and took the chicken katsu to go. Because I don't eat sushi so while the rest of my family was happy with their generous portions, I got tonkatsu and chicken karaage. The tonkatsu was super thin but a lot of it. It was OK. Maybe a 3-4. However the karaage was NOT karaage. It was chicken katsu. Not even close to karaage. Also it came last, not first as an appetizer. I think this place is geared to deliver sushi (I guess the name gives it away) so if you want sushi or any variation (sashimi, roll, chirashi, etc) you get value for money and get it quickly. I used to really enjoy dining at Sushi Island. Unfortunately, there is a new waitress who has the worst attitude I've ever seen a server have in probably ever! I stopped by the restaurant 2 weeks ago during my lunch break. I really wanted to enjoy some tasty Japanese food, but the new waitress's rude behavior ruined the whole experience. She kept rolling her eyes at me, which made me feel unwelcome. Her attitude and behavior were very uncalled for, so I ended up telling her how rude she was. Sadly, I believe other recent reviews have made mention of this waitress as well. The food was as delicious as it always is, but my recent unpleasant experience at the restaurant has significantly diminished my dining experience. YES!! Another spot that my kids ask for takeout, one of the few non-fast food spots that they enjoy. Online ordering was simple, and pick up was straight forward as well. I order through the BeyondMenu app, and the only pay option as of right now is pay at store. I go to the pick up window and pay, and my order is ready around the stated time. Here's what we've tried so far - Tempura Udon - my kids really enjoy the udon and soup here. We order the tempura one because the noodle and soup come separately and there is a separate container of the tempura stuff - mostly veggies and a shrimp. They prefer their udon just with the soup, so more tempura for me. One issue they found was once a while, the soup portion was very bland. They took my miso soup to try to add flavor to it, but that was just a one time thing. Chicken Kaarage - Another kid's favorite. My daughter would have an entire order of this along with her udon, and then she'd take some of her younger brother's portion. Chirashi - Pretty good! I get various sashimi cravings from time to time, so I got a chirashi bowl to go. It's definitely something more enjoyable dining in, but the to go one wasn't bad. It came with 8 slices of sashimi (2 each of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and white fish), some maguro, 2 pieces of tamago, all on top of the rice. It includes ginger and wasabi as well, plus a thingy of soy sauce on the side. Comes with a side of miso soup too. Sushi Island Roll - if you really enjoy cucumber in place of seaweed and rice, this would be a great roll. It has the raw fish and such, wrapped with cucumber. Pretty good, but the cucumber is a bit overpowering to the good stuff of the roll. Seems low carb though. Seafood Salad - assorted chopped pieces of raw fish over salad. Not enough for a meal, but good pricey side to some other stuff on the menu. Good though. Jalapeno Bomb - spicy tuna and cream cheese stuffed jalapenos, deep fried. Yum! Various Bento Boxes - choose a couple entrees and it comes with rice, salad, and miso soup. The entrees we've tried are their various teriyakis (salmon, beef, etc), spicy chicken (similar to teriyaki, but coated in a sauce with some spice), sesame chicken (looks similar to the kaarage, but slightly different), and chicken katsu. All have been pleasant experiences. Can't wait to try more of their stuff. Most of the rolls sound good, but similar to a lot of restaurants these days, price of items really add up quickly. read more

This company was following COVID guidelines & were extremely friendly! I ordered the Lion King Roll, it was good, but kind of fell apart! But it tasted good & fresh. I also ordered the 49er roll, tasted great & the fish was fresh! The boys got the basic rolls, tekka, saki & California rolls. They eat them all up! Lastly we got the the shrimp tempura. They were crunchy, light and filling. The dipping sauce was a little different & a lighter color. It wasn't super flavorful, but it didn't ruin the dish at all. My go to spot for local sushi. Thry raised their prices drastically due to inflation. You can always expect clean and tasty food but I almost flipped out when i paid almost $8 for a California roll. The tonkotsu don was fantastic, as was udon, calamari, tofu teriyaki and the sashimi. The tempura was super crispy and perfectly fried.
