Decent lunch buffet on a Saturday & open during COVID-19 chaos ! We have been here in the first few years these guys opened and it was seemingly innovative and cool looking inside compared to other Indian Buffet type establishments. Now it just seemed - better than average. Highlight was oddly the bread ! Hot and buttered once you sat down. About 14-16 hot dishes w all the usual items - tandoori chicken was just average but the buttered chicken was good as were a number of the veggie dishes. All the sauces were distinct and unique and they had two desserts and fresh fruit. Price charged was $16.95/per person despite the menu stating $15.95 which I never like restaurants to do. They seemed happy we were there on a Saturday at 12:30 PM. Go out and hit some local restaurants during our pandemic ! Plenty of seats and parking was easy. Food was good ! Go. read more

The award for the best Indian lunch buffett within our 5-mile radius goes to ....Sakoon! Oh, don't bother going to any other Buffett. We came here for a Saturday lunch. Focussed on the non-veg items and all of them are delicious! Have already talked about their butter chicken, and now have also tried their mutton curry, which was also heavenly. They also nailed the gajar ka halwa! My wife was not happy with the punjabi kadi - She thinks there were too many different spices in it. We could spot curry leaves, mustard seeds, jeera all in the same curry. Is it supposed to be like that? But there are just too many delicious options here. I barely finished eating a plate , mostly appetizers and they are already closing the buffet and removing the dishes .. ? It was a nice experience visiting this place. The stuff was warm. The food was very delicious . I wonder the quantity. So we ordered : Dahi kabab - 9/10 but only 3 pieces (although those were good filling) but 3 wasnt something I was looking for. Atleast 6 should be there as the price was good 8-9$. Tikki - similar case as above 9/10 - 3 pieces. But ya I loved the presentation and it was super yummy . Main course - we ordered chicken Dum biryani - the price (19-20$) was a lil high than what we usually pay (10-12$). But again the presentation took my heart away. And it definitely tasted very well. CHAI - something that I was craving for at that time but it didn't turn out well :( 3/10. Maybe it made hours before and was resting in a kettle that's why it tasted a lil weird. This was a very interesting dining experience. Friends chose the location and based on the reviews I wasn't eagerly anticipating dinner. But I was pleasantly surprised. The interior is very artful and unusual. The long walk to the restroom was particularly amazing. The walk treatments with mosaics was stunningly. Even the bathroom was amazing in a Liberace/Bollywood kind of way. That said, even though the restroom looked clean there was a nasty sewage odor there. The menu was varied and had many dishes I've never seen in other Indian menus. There was a section of Jain dishes (minus onions and garlic) that we skipped. We shared samosas - nothing special - and a fantastic cauliflower appetizer. My wife had the tandoori rack of lamb and raved. The friends ordered butter chicken and chicken tikka masala which they liked but thought were too similar. We had an okra side dish that was good. I also got an eggplant dish that had a fantastic cashew sauce. There were only 2 or 3 whole baby eggplant in the dish - they were good but cut up eggplant would have absorbed that amazing sauce better and for $14 or so I'd expect more eggplant. We got plain, garlic and rosemary naan. All fabulous. As was the paratha. Rice was good as was raita and mango chutney. There were many more items on the menu I'd like to try. If ever in the area again I'll be back. All in all a pretty great meal. Downsides, besides the aforementioned restroom were pretty high prices. One of us got alcohol, one chai and one salty lassi. One of the cleanest Indian restaurants in the South Bay. I have tried their buffet with couple of friends who religiously go to this place on Sundays because of their buffet, and they rave about it. I wanted to see what the hype was about, and boy I understood instantly as I walked in. You get a whiff of Indian spice aromas as you walk in (which can be a bad thing if you don't like spice but in this case it was just the right amount hahaha) This place is pretty good, food tastes good, their buffet items are fresh, tables are clean with white table cloths, and their service is on point. Food quality was very bad: DAL SAKOON had burnt taste. Dahi papdi chaat was tasting like papdi's were very old and oil gone rancid in the papdis. We asked for onion and green chillies...bill showed up with $5 charged for those in the name of "GREEN SALAD". Never have I been charged for onion/green chillies in any of the restaurants(including Sakoon in the past). we had also ordered Biryani...but waited forever for spoons and biryani was already cold by then. After lot of recommendations and hype for the mountain view Sakoon, we finally went to this place on a Friday evening in hope of getting some really kick ass Indian food. The ambience is nice and I would recommend to reserve a table on weekends as this gets pretty packed up. Ordered Chicken seekh kebab and paneer tikka you start with - not at all impressed by either of them. Both were rubbery and did not had enough flavour to those. Additionally, none of them came with onions or lemon - as you would expect these starters to be served atleast with lemon. Ordered kofta curry for the main course with garlic naan and tandoori roti. The kofta curry was good and had taste to it - was filled with spinach and paneer. Garlic naan and roti were thick and not crisp enough. Did not wish to eat desert after not a great experience. They have a really good lunch buffet here - HUGE spread in comparison to others in the area (something like 6 different veg, 4 different non-veg dishes plus rice dishes and naan and desserts and some apps). As a vegetarian, I really appreciate places where they have so many offerings. The food is generally quite tasty, sometimes unusual/unexpected takes on traditional fare (eg - corn & saag). My only complaints: 1) they are pretty slow on the naan service (bring it out to the tables during the lunch buffet). In the multiple times we have come here, we've typically gone through the line and eaten a plate of food BEFORE the naan arrives - even when the restaurant isn't particularly full. 2) Their dinner service has too little quantity food for the price they charge. read more

Their food and service have gone down significantly. The server was in a sudden rush to take the orders ans didn't even wait for people to finish deciding. The food was below par -- Dahi ke Kabab and Katori Chaat had sour yogurt and they didn't even own it. Same thing with Mango lassi. The paneer Peshawari was without spices and tasted like paneer makhani; and Kofta (their signature dish) was too sweet. Sakoon is one of my favorite Indian buffets in the Bay Area. The contemporary Indian decor sets it apart from most restaurants and is reminiscent of the nicer places in Mumbai. The service is not always consistent, but good for the most part. The food selection is great, with meat, vegetarian, starch, salad, and desserts. The diversity makes it easy to bring different groups here. My favorite is their Goan fish curry (when they have it). The flavors are rich and the kitchen isn't afraid to make something spicy when it is supposed to be spicy. The one thing I don't like is the restaurant's long and narrow layout. If you get stuck in the back it's a lesser experience. Minor detail though. read more

When we ordered more food part way through the meal, it came out right away, so I could forget the initial wait. Sakoon was one of those places I read about on Yelp, because we were in the area and we wanted an Indian buffet. Low and behold, Sakoon delivered just that. There were many options to choose from, and my favorite dish- butter chicken (aka the holy grail of Indian food)- was made quite well. There were a plethora of options, however, with the large amounts of food comes a lot of room taken up for service, which leaves not so much room for the guests. The setup could definetly be better, in terms of the flow, because at times it was so crowded I was afraid I was going to drop my food right then and there. The service can be pretty slow as well. Beware of weekends, it can really, really get crowded over lunch, but deservedly so. This place has good Indian food, and deserves a full four stars from me. read more

This place is packed and rightfully so. The buffet is probably one of the best Indian buffets in the Bay Area and this is based solely on its food. It gets really loud in there during lunch and a bit claustrophobic. It can become a sort of maze trying to navigate from your table to the buffet. When this place is too packed we go to Mantra India across the street which also had good food, although not as good as Sakoon. Mantra is a lot less packed and has a nicer ambience. So if your mission is to chow down and get food coma, go Sakoons. If you are willing to sacrifice a bit of food quality to be able to have a audible conversation with someone goto Mantra. I do like the naan at Sakoon a lot better than Mantra. read more

This buffet is super popular for lunch with all the offices nearby. I was there for a going-away lunch for someone in my company and we began eating at 11:30. The restaurant was quiet at that time but once noon hit, the line for the food was probably 20 people deep! Food was enjoyable and they have a lot of vegetarian options. I wish I understood the titles of the dishes though. So be sure to go with Indian friends or be prepared to try the food out yourself. Food was plentiful but my group also came right at the beginning so I can't say for those who come towards the latter end of meal times. It seems like they have some seating areas in the back so the buffet can fit a good amount of people. However, the seating could be improved on. They have booth style seating for a buffet, which makes no sense! With a giant table of 8+ people, to get in and out, everyone would have to get up and sit back down. The space was rather squished that drinks would be knocked over too. (I actually had lemonade spilled on me and walked around with a wet spot on my jeans the whole time, but I'm unbothered) Anyways, our office left with a bad taste as management also blatantly refused to serve us drinks towards to end of our meal (everyone had dessert at that time) and told us we would have to move so other people could come in when we weren't even close to being there for 2 hours. I understand people may be waiting but they were not apologetic in telling paying costumers to leave NOW. If you're going to kick repeating costumers out then you better work on your tone of voice and wording. The redeeming quality is the food but personally, I would not come back. Pot pie at an Indian restaurant? I must commend the chefs here for their novelty. When I ordered the seafood biryani, I didn't expect it to come in what I can only describe as loosely resembling a pot pie - a ceramic dish with a layer of bread (like naan but thinner) over it. Inside, the biryani was a nice blend of seafood and spice, with a reasonable amount of shrimp and fish over basmati rice. The ambiance at Sakoon is modern and chic with warm and cool light tones, artsy furniture and decor, and fiber optic chandeliers. Definitely a sexy place to take a date. As with all things visually appealing, be prepared to pay extra $$. My biryani was a bit pricey at $18, and even an order of naan will cost you $3 to $4. If that's your thing, then Sakoon works well. Otherwise, there are more economical places on Castro Street with food just as good, if not better. May I suggest Shezan or Shiva's? read more

Had to downgrade to one star after the dinner experience last night. For 80$ for 2 ppl : no one comes to get water or anything after being seated for 10'minutes ., servers are busy setting up other tables with no one to occupy them . cold chai , garlic naan is cold - when asked without any apology takes it back and disappears for another 10 minutes with the already not so hot curries going cold. Again need to flag someone down to ask for the naan . Another 10 minutes later when the curries are all super cold - naan appears. WORST experience for the money. I have only tried their lunch buffet and it was one of the best indian buffet i have had so far. There were many options to chose from, lots of veggie as well as meat options and a large variety of dessert selections too. What I don't like about the place is that it gets really crowded and the area around the buffet is cramped up during peak hours. The service aint that great either. It was our 2nd time visiting together (Me & the hubby) and this time joyfully with friends. Sakoon is a popular Indian restaurant, one of the sort after places for it's elegant and beautiful ambience. It's located in the downtown corridor of Mountain view, at the Castro street. We were extremely pleased with the service we've received so far. Staff at the front desk were warm and welcoming. The attendant who served us was friendly and helpful too. Well, after almost a year visited the place again, strangely and surely feel something different this time particularly when it comes to their food (My rating as of last year would've been 4 stars, for sure). We started with a cold drink 'Tropical Breeze', which is a mango flavored juice (Good, but can't say I'm a big fan of it). Vegetarian picks, # From Appetizer, we chose Panch Poran Paneer Tikka ($11.9) - Good again, not as tasty as I've felt great elsewhere. Although Paneer (cottage cheese) was cooked well with justly soft touch. # From Vegetarian Entree, we selected Paneer Peshawari ($17.9) - I would say this is a very expensive item for the quantity we were offered. Portion size was small and it was neither super rich and creamy nor traditionally flavorful. # Breads, we went for Bread Basket ($14) - Three different varieties of breads, Lachcha Paratha, Garlic Naan & Rosemary Naan. I've dined-in at places where I can clearly distinguish between the tasteful flavor of each variety. Unfortunately, I couldn't do here as every bread tasted almost the same and clearly, not distinct. On top of it, breads were not served Hot, they were just lukewarm. Although on the better side, breads were soft and fluffy. Lastly, we had Sizzlers (not sure about the price), which was a great savior of the entire lot, honestly! It's a mix of veggies and pineapple fruit, just loved it!! It was the right choice made by one of our friend, helped me to revive at least before leaving. It was a Saturday night, but the spot was not as busy as one might expect it would be during weekends. Definitely, the seating area is large and can host big groups. There is a separate party kinda room, all the way down the hall and the rest rooms can be found right next to the party room. Parking tip, There is a separate private parking lot at the back of the restaurant, but it'l be tightly packed most times. If you're not lucky to find a good parking space there, go ahead finding a legal street parking. Again, might take longer time if the street is fully packed. Visited on a Friday night. My order: - dahi kabab (appetizer) - very good - shahi paneer - very bad - garlic naan - ok - pesto naan - ok We really liked our appetizer but main course was a disaster. Shahi paneer did not look anything like the traditional shahi paneer and it was just bland! When we ordered, we were not warned about it being bland or to even increase the spice level. So, we had to order another dish, shaam savera which was better. Our first dish was completely wasted but was still added to the bill. :/ Overall, there was nothing I would visit again for. This review is for the lunch buffet only. Sakoon has a new, vibrant, flashy setting that is a bit over-the-top for my tastes (architectural digest - meets Vegas - meets Flintstones). Buffet price is $11.95, which seems like a steal based on ambiance alone. But based on food, it's about right. Buffet planning seems to use the following formula: Start with butter chicken (every day), add two standard meat-based curries, add some veggie dishes, but with a twist (e.g. saag with eggplant or corn, dal with extra tomatoes, etc.) Add a selection of finger-food apps and end with galub jamun (little bread balls in sugar syrup) plus two more desserts. So, the selection is decent, but not all that daring. As for flavor and presentation, everything was good, but there were no big standouts apart from the excellent Kheer (with little tapioca balls and nuts added). The butter chicken was very 'OK' on both my visits. Naan is delivered to the table (yay!) but delivery has been very inconsistent. On my first visit it was delivered way too late (after I finished my first plate of food). On my second visit it was delivered immediately, but then the server replaced it 10 minutes later with a slightly warmer batch. I found this unnecessary, and it smacked of food waste. The naan itself is too doughy; not quite crispy enough for me. I imagine that Shiva's across the street is shaking in its shoes, since for the longest time it has been the only Indian spot on this block of Castro. (And the only upscale Indian spot in Mountain view). Just for grins, here's a little mini smackdown between the two: -- Setting/Décor: I prefer Shiva's more simple, elegant approach -- Service: Sakoon -- Naan: No question...Shivas -- Buffet selection: Sakoon -- Butter chicken: Easy choice - Shivas! -- Prices: Sakoon ------ Update 3//3/2015 Buffet price is now $13.95, which is $1 better than Shivas. It's official, Sakoon is now my favorite restaurant on Castro St. I just love it. My friend and I came here for dinner last night and had a lovely time. I can't say enough about the gorgeous decor and ambiance. So aesthetically pleasing. Plus the food is fantastic. Superb flavor, perfect presentation and plentiful portions. We were seated in one of the booths and noticed that we sank down into the seat. My friend looked as if she needed a booster seat. It was quite funny actually. We asked if we could sit at one of the tables instead and our server was cool with that. Luckily the place was empty at that time. Tandoori Chicken ($12) - It had the perfect amount of spice to awaken the taste buds. Black Lentils ($11) - SO delicious. I couldn't help but use the Naan to soak up the yummy lentils and savory sauce. Plain Naan ($3) - Fresh and warm just the way it should be. My surprise b-day dessert was such a treat. It was like this donut hole/mochi thing in a lemon syrup sauce with a side of cream covered berries. Although quite a distance to travel there, it's worth it. Sakoon maintains the food quality and cleanliness. Warm and friendly staff. The trays for the buffet are quickly replenished. They are mindful to check that all warming trays are in the right temperature. It was wonderful to try variety of dishes. To avoid the lunch time crowd, try to be there early at 11ish. It feels good to see the bustling of people coming in. Thats the reasons why people come...good food, environment, and service! I noticed that they have skinny girl tangerine vodka which is a low calorie and low carb vodka. That was the first time I saw that vodka at any place. Also, I was very impressed by the gorgeous and unique decor. It was dim inside but not to dark. Around the corner from the bar there is an upstairs lounge area that is very cool. Check out my pics to see how nice the place is. I was expecting the food here to be great according to the reviews. I skimmed through them as they mostly got high ratings. Next time I should read more of the reviews, both the good and bad ones before I decide to order anything. To make a long story short, it seemed like everyone in the group flaked out, so I decided to just order some stuff to go. I think this is a fusion place as some of the names of the food sounded a little different from what I'm used to. That was a red flag as I tend to hate most fusion stuff, but I digress... I ordered the samosa for $5.50, an order of basmati rice for $3.00, some stuffed chicken naan for $4.00, and for the main entree, a paneer dish for around $13.00 I think. Everything was just OK at best. The samosas were small and the outside crust was a bit stale. The pieces of chicken in the naan were to small and a little dry. The paneer dish would've been good if it weren't for the sauce. The sauce was way to rich. Also, it had a weird floury taste to it as if the flour or whatever powder they used in the dish wasn't mixed properly. Despite the nice ambiance, I won't be coming back here for the food. read more

All wonderful evening must start with good happy hour. Couple of us arrived before 7pm to get some HH drinks while we wait for the others. $5 for selected cocktails and $2 beer. You can't go wrong with a nice glass of margarita or mojito. For appetizers we ordered Shrimp Balchao (3 of 5 stars) - A bit too salty and burnt. Would not recommend. Scallops (4 of 5 stars) - The scallops were just a tad bit too cooked but the flavor saved this dish. The caviar that came with the scallops weren't good at all. Saufiya Panner (4 of 5 stars) - I like the sharp taste of this dish. If you are not a big fan of exotic cheese you probably won't like this. Tuna (4 of 5 stars) - Pretty standard fare with a slight Indian twist. The secret is in the sauce. For entree we had Seabass Tikka (4 of 5 stars) - Heavenly buttery taste. Very delicious. Kerela Fish Curry (4 of 5 stars) - Seabass, shirmp and scallops swimming in smooth curry sauce. This one the best dish out of all. Bharwan Murgh (3 of 5 stars) - Interesting dish. It was supposedly chicken stuff with lamb but I didn't taste much of anything. Murgh Sakoonwala (3 of 5 stars) - The curry was a bit too light. Rack of Lamb (3 of 5 stars) - Nice but not great. The lamb was tasty but the texture was not as tender as I would like. Anari Jhinga (4 of 5 stars) - Nice sauce with a hint of tart that brought out the flavor of the prawns. For sides we ordered Kashmiri Naan (5 of 5 stars) - I love the rose essence and the sweetness. This naan is perfect for some really spicy curry. Unfortunately nothing we ordered that night had nearly hot enough. Murgh Naan (4 of 5 stars) - The chicken tikka in the naan made this very filling. For desserts we had Macadamia and White Chocolate Kulfi (3 of 5 stars) - It was instant heart attack RICH! It would be hard to finish on your own. Indian Dessert Sampler (3 of 5 stars) - Four different kinds of sweets. Nothing really stood out. Chaena Malai (4 of 5 stars) - I love this dessert but everyone else seem to hate it. I guess it was the cheese curd taste that put people off. I am a big fan of exotic food. I found the semi sweetness of the milk and cheese combo extremely alluring. Service at this restaurant was top notch. Waitstaff were very friendly and attentive. All the questions we had about the menu were patiently answered. Our glasses were always filled. It's been a while since I was this happy with a meal. Maybe its the fact that I get to sleep in tomorrow after a long work week, that Im eating before 10pm, and Im not going directly back to working after I eat. Or it could be because the newest restaurant on Castro has debuted to excellent food and service. The old TK Noodle space (glad it's gone) has given way to a modern, very stylish foray into contemporary Indian cuisine. Bright colors, a full bar and eccentric interior design splash over the remodeled space. There's a lounge area upstairs which will house some after hours/post drinking times once they've established themselves. Immediately upon entry I was greeted by a beautiful hostess, and several friendly managers welcoming us to their grand opening. As we perused the menu, there were a lot of offerings both traditional, modernized and with touches all of their own. They'll also be sporting a regular and vegetarian tasting menu down the line. So the old co-workers and I made our own tasting menu out of: - Samosas 3 ways - curried chicken and apples, spring peas, potatoes, pomegranate seeds and feta cheese, paneer, ginger, amchoor and ricotta cheese - Saufiya Paneer - Cube of farmer's cheese marinated with fennel, sun dried tomatoes and basil and served with warm mustard seed, fennel and basil oil and a small salad of daikon -Scallops - Marinated in smoked paprika, served with mango and chickpea salsa and roasted pepper tahini sauce -Farmer's Market Salad - Marinated in smoked paprika, served with mango and chickpea salsa and roasted pepper tahini sauce -Roasted Tomato and Pepper Soup - Creamed vine ripened tomatoes and pepper soup, flavored with basil and fennel and served with coriander, fennel shrimp -Rack of Lamb - Marinated with lavender and thyme ,spiced pear chutney and served with mustard and curry leaf flavored potatoes -Lahori Murghi - Tandoori, whole organic Cornish Hen, marinated with spices and lemon thyme and lemon peel. -Yellow Dal - Special recipe of the house with mustard seeds, jiggery and green chilies -Kerela Fish - A blend of sea bass, shrimp and scallops cooked slowly in a coconut sauce - Kashmiri Naan - Coconut Rice -Gulab Jamun - Spongy milk dumplings flavored with saffron and green cardamom served with candied rose sauce. 5.00 - Jaggery Rasmalai - Cottage cheese dumplings flavored with raw sugar and served with reduced milk sauce Needless to say we had a feast and the restaurants staff could clearly see how much we were enjoying the food. Every floor manager came by and talked to us and the GM (who comes from with some other staff, running Amber India) spent a good deal of time conversing, talking about the opening, and viewpoints on food in general. He even brought the chef out to chat with us. There are tons of Indian places around the area and most of them are only ok. I know that there is a leaning towards traditional Indian cuisine for the most part but it's a treasure to find a great one pushing the boundaries. Wonderful experience all around. Had a good dinner experience last weekend. We were a large group and could try a variety of dishes. Appetizers: Samosa- decent, nothing special Crab cake- just ok Tandoori triple play- liked the lamb chops and achari chicken, the shrimp not so much Soufiya paneer-soft and delicious Seabass tikka-melt in your mouth softness Entrees: Chicken biryani: beautiful presentation, mild flavors Vegetable pulav: nice flavors Sham savera kofta- rich, a little too tangy Paneer peshawari- rich and great flavor Classic chicken curry: not my favorite.
