I'm familiar with the establishment when it was still Yoko's, and I have to say I enjoy it much more now. I come here usually on Tuesday nights around 5pm with my Japanese study group, and at that time it's mostly dead with the occasional stragglers or small groups. The service hasn't been as slow for me as it seems it has been for others, but then again I think the food is worth a small wait. It definitely has a comfortable, mom-and-pop feel and they've always been really pleasant to myself and the people I go with. The food is pretty delicious and the closest you'll get to authentic Japanese. They do ramen as well, which is a rarity in this town. I really enjoy their tempura and hot tea, and their portion sizes are definitely filling. I would try going later in the day if you're worried about waiting long, but if you want to really take your time and enjoy your meal, this is a great place to do that. read more

Been here on several trips with the family. Staff is friendly and courteous. In addition they speak Japanese if you are inclined to try your Japanese. We have both their chashu ramen and breaded chicken bento dish. Each time the food was pleasant, but most importantly worth a return. Very good ramen! I really loved the traditional taste and we also tried the takoyaki (octopus dumplings). The egg and meat and bamboo shoots were all cooked into the ramen just perfectly. The takoyaki was a bit too crunchy for my taste. I think they should be a little more doughy like a pancake. Delicious, nevertheless. Service was pretty good. The waiter dealt with us in a timely manner. He was a little shaky and seemed unsure about the menu. Still good service. Overall the restaurant has a nice and quiet feel. Very low key. Authentic Japanese! Great ramen and very filling! The gyozo was excellent. I had the spicy miso ramen with beef and added an egg. Good amount of spice but I like extra spicy so they gave me a side of red chili paste. Unfortunately, the egg was boiled hard instead of the traditional soft boiled egg...they only give you half an egg. The wait is LONG because there is only one server, but it's worth it if you are not in a rush. This plaza has great Japanese cultural heritage (was built right after WWII). It's tucked away in what was considered Denver's Japantown. There's a Japanese grocery store and Buddhist temple within the plaza as well. New development is on it's way...enjoy it before it changes. read more

Went inside because we were at the Cherry Blossom Festival and wanted to escape the mid afternoon rain shower that started soon after we we arrived to the festival. We were seated in the corner on the right side of the restaurant. They had a shorter menu for the festival- just a sheet of paper front and back showing about ten to twelve entrees, five to six appetizers, and simple drink options. We figured that since there was a special menu, the service would be faster due to the limited options. My husband and I waited about five minutes for someone to address us and ask for our order. We asked for two glasses of water and two beef bowls. The waiter never wrote anything down. We waited another ten minutes to ask our waiter about the water, then about five more for another staff member to hand us 3/4 filled cups and no straws. As the second staff member gave us our waters, he asked if we had already ordered, and we said yes. It wasn't until we saw another table get up and leave when started to realize what was going on. I'm not as patient as my husband, so when I saw this first table get up and leave he asked for me to wait a little longer. We were there a total of 45 minutes, sitting and waiting for food that I suspect was never ordered. We saw a second table get up and leave, and that's when we also had enough and left. I never saw any of the staff refill drinks at any table. Will never return to this place, and that's a shame because I really enjoy Japanese cuisine. Bad service is never an excuse, however. read more

Wow! This was a pleasant surprise! I was in town and was searching for nearby restaurants and found Sakura House. Since I'm Japanese, I am always looking for authentic Japanese food. This hit the spot. I had the Saba bento box, which included a healthy portion of shrimp and vegetable tempura, pieces of ahi sashimi (shaped as a rose), seaweed salad, miso soup, tossed salad and rice. The rice was perfect. The Saba was a small portion. Which is appropriate considering al the other food in the bento. Everything was delicious! The woman behind the counter is Japanese and so is the cook/chef. So happy to have found this restaurant and satisfy my desire for authentic Japanese food. It's nothing special to look at and the inside seating during the pandemic is limited to the take out side but the prices are very reasonable for such good food. read more

A little background: I lived in rural Japan for a little over three years. Living alone and being a subpar cook meant I ate out often, but how could I complain? Conveyor belt sushi, okonomoyaki, convenience store onigiri... even on a budget, I couldn't go hungry if I tried. The places I ate the most, however, were unassuming little restaurants that offered tried-and-true Japanese staples. Donburi, ramen, korokke, and many other Japanese comfort foods that usually fall under the radar owing to their more popular contemporary counterparts. But damn was it good, and holy cow was it hard to find in Denver. Enter Sakura House. My first trip here I tried the miso ramen, a savory bowl of soup both filling and delicious. It's on par with much of Denver's other noodly fare (Domo, Uncle, etc), with a fairer price and a more homey feel. I also had a chance to try the karaage, which gave me vivid flashbacks to a little place I used to eat under a bridge. My second trip was filled with mapodofu, a Japanese take on a Chinese dish that will make you rethink your perception of Nippon's "light, healthy" food. Though it was a little on the mild side for me, the consistency was just right. Unfortunately, I have to echo a few other caveats. The food is prepared fresh by a minimal staff, so don't drop in if you're in a hurry, particularly around lunch time. The food is consistently good, but rarely excellent. It has a "home cooking" feel that is comforting, satisfying, and tasty, but just falls short of 5 stars in a restaurant setting. All that being said, I will be back, and I will be sampling other dishes. If one of them pushes me over the edge, I'll let you know. read more

BIG BOUNTIFUL BOWLS OF RAMEN! We came on a Friday evening and arrived to an empty house, and we appreciated this very much, having the place to ourselves. There were only two people working, the cook and the nice lady that was serving us. We went with the spicy miso ramen and the tonkotsu ramen. My friends eyes went wild when the bowls came out, they were seriously HUGE and filled to the rim! I know this is not uncommon, but they literally give you a ladle as a spoon. Both broths were delightful, we ended up switching bowls a few times because both were so tasty. Spicy miso is indeed spicy, score-but it does teeter on the salty side! Tonkotsu is beautiful in color and a true champion in taste. The noodles were perfect and bountiful. My only quibble was having to add a hard boiled egg at extra cost because they are not included in all of the ramen choices, but at least they have the option. This place is slightly hidden and even with the open sign in the window we thought it might be closed. I have a feeling they get quite a large lunch crowd due to the tastiness and downtown location. I can't wait to eat here on a really cold day, because I am sure to leave happy, warm, and totally comforted. read more

This place is a hidden gem in my eyes. A lot of locals go over to this restaurant and it is owned by a friendly Japanese couple. I really appreciate the home like atmosphere and I feel the food is made with love which is important to me. I usually get their ramen which is pretty good, but this time, since it's been hot, I decided to get cold soba noodles that came with tempura and overall it was fairly good. I think the noodles could have been cooked a tad bit longer since it kinda was hard. I also had their karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and that was delicious and hot and fresh. This place is definitely affordable and serves Japanese food that sushi restaurants usually don't have on the menu which is awesome. They have many things for people to try, so if your ever downtown, I would give this place a chance. read more

Not the best, not the worst. I give it a solid 3.5 stars. Quick service. Luckily we didn't have the 45 minute wait another Yelper had. We walked in, she had us sit anywhere, and our appetizer (karaage) arrived between 5-8 minutes after ordering. It's also pretty damn big and spacious for a ramen house. The karaage could have been better. The chicken was a bit stringy and dry, but the seasoning was nice. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen, since I had such a big craving for so long after moving from California to Colorado. Does this compare to Orenchi ramen in Cupertino, CA? Hell to the no. Is it your best bet here in Denver? My answer so far is yes. Ah - last thing to note. Another Yelper mentioned you had to ask for boiled egg in the ramen, but when I ordered, she said it was included with the ramen, so they must have changed that since the last review. The noodles themselves are pretty good - around the quality of the type you get at Mitsuwa. They're on the thicker side, and unlike other places like Shinsengumi, they don't ask you how hard or soft you would like it, but you can tell them yourself. Otherwise, it's on the softer side with a good chewy elasticity. I'm eager to try the curry udon at some point, mostly because I really miss this kind of comfort food. Probably one of the cheapest places to eat if you're downtown. I came here when I was in an all day training event with several friends. It's a little confusing whether or not you seat yourself (actually, I'm still not clear on this). Service is a bit slow and the ambiance/decor is not what you'd expect of a downtown restaurant. I. DO. NOT. CARE. Food was flavorful and satisfying, and well-priced for downtown. I had chasu ramen, which was a huge bowl that I happily slurped down. My friends enjoyed their bento box (couldn't decide what she wanted), udon, and some kind of egg/omelet type meal (served with rice). Everyone was groaning when we finished, lamenting the need to return to our training. However, see note above that service is not fast. We might've been late getting back. A haven of authentic Japanese ramen in Denver. As someone from the Bay Area, I'm taken aback how something this good a Japanese restaurant is here so far away from the Pacific Ocean. The takoyaki and karaage appetizers were very good. The takoyaki is actually one of the best I've ever had. Good flavor and texture on the inside. The karaage is very crispy and flavorful, although I'm not used to getting only 5 pieces for an order. The tonkotsu pork ramen definitely hit the spot! It was very flavorful and hearty. It was definitely umami. I like how it was milky and full of pork flavor. The only downside is that it was more oily than I'm used to. However, it still definitely satisfied the craving. This place is a definite must-try if you want authentic Japanese ramen and curries. I'm coming back here if I ever come back toDenver. read more

This place is by far my favorite favorite ramen place! I wish it was closer to me though, but its a great place to get good ramen. Their broth in the Ma-bo Ramen is rich, their japanese fried chicken is crispy and delicious, and its usually pretty good service. I love a good ethnic restaurant that has authentic food. I had ramen and edamame and it was excellent! This is a no frills, authentic Japanese restaurant. My ramen was really good. I got the traditional ramen, which had pork in it. So if you're vegatarian double check with your server which ones have meat because mine did not have pork in the description. It wasn't salty either which was great. I think I expected it to be salty because of it being a brothy soup, but I was wrong! I really want to like this place and I probably will give it another shot, but the initial trial was a bit lackluster. I ordered the spicy miso ramen, which came out piping hot. They add some vegetables to the ramen that I believe aren't usually in there, such as zucchini and carrot, which made for interesting additions. I wonder if they do that to add some variety to the bowl. Overall the spicy miso ramen was a bit too buttery for my taste, and not quite miso-y enough. The broth was thick, but not in a good way. It was certainly lacking the kind of complexity of flavor that I expect from miso ramen. I'll probably be back but not for the same dish. read more

Unpretentious in a comfortable setting with many great choices. Good apps as well. Koroke is very good. Average bowl is around $8.00-$9.00 a bowl. This is not a Momofuko knockoff. Definitely a place the locals come and for me left a bit to be desired, but would and will try again when I'm back in the area. I ordered the Basic ramen with a few slices of pork. Overall the soup was very flavorful, but perhaps a bit to rich for my taste. It could have used perhaps a lime/lemon to help not make it such a heavy broth. Also the broth itself was a bit greasy. I tried to spoon out some of the greasy that was floating on top but proved to time consuming. I wasn't able to really enjoy the broth due to all the fat/grease in it. The pork was well cooked and tender and the noodles were also well executed. Overall don't think I'd order the same dish again, but looking forward to trying something else. read more

I came here for lunch last week on Friday and honestly I would say its the worst restaurant experience I have ever had, it was very strange. When we came in the first thing we were told was that the wait was about 20 minutes but they weren't sure if would be longer. We sat ourselves in a room full of no one eating... I guess we should have left at that point, but we waited for 40 minutes for food, asked how long it would take and they told us another 15 minutes. Decent ramen place; a bit oversalty, and the broth could use more work. The seaweed salad is literally a bit of seaweed on top of some lettuce and other traces of a more traditional salad.
