I visited Sakura for a friend's birthday dinner. The service was good and they do allow for reservations. I had the salmon teriyaki with the teriyaki sauce on the side. The salmon was cooked really well and had a great texture. I will also say the portion of the meal was really good for the price and it comes with soup and salad. My boyfriend and I also split the shrimp tempura roll which was a pretty standard shrimp tempura roll. What it lacked in space, it made up for in charm and easy social interaction. Today, my friends and I came in for dinner, and received some of the worst service I've ever had for a birthday dinner. Our server, McKenna (blonde) was incredibly short with us and absolutely not attentive in the slightest. I've been a server before, and I generally give a lot of grace because this industry is not easy, but she was just unbelievable. She forgot my drink, and when I requested a new one 20 minutes later, she walked off without a single apology or even a word, just turned on her heel and left. I then saw her bring drinks to another table, stop and converse with them another 10 minutes, then she brought out our food. When my friend reminded her about my drink, she replied very rudely, "Yeah, I know." She rarely checked on us, the few times she looked at us, she would roll her eyes. We still left a tip because we understand how underpaid servers are, but I have never felt so dismissed and disrespected by a server before. If we're such a burden to serve, don't worry, we won't come back here again if we see her. We did report it to the manager, who gave us a free dessert, and the other servers seemed very kind and attentive, so I would return with a different server. Given all the hustle and bustle of my life, I got some good news, wanted to celebrate, but by the time the celebrating came around, I was just knackered and only chose to go out if dinner was nearby. Enter Sakura Sushi & Grill. Have passed by here dozens of times and had never gone in. Finally went and it was nothing major. Plenty of food options but nothing stands out in either a positive or negative way. Apparently this restaurant serves hibachi on top of sushi. Mind you, the hibachi is cooked in the back, so it's not cooked in front of you like I'm normally accustomed to. That said, the plates are huge (at least to me; your mileage may vary) and they have many specials. The hibachi meals come with salad, soup, and obviously your choice of rice and vegetables with whatever you order as a meat. My companion got a rib special and it was tasty per his words, but I think the portion was small for him. As for me, I had the shrimp and lobster and all I kept thinking was I wish they had cut up the lobster more. It's possible I'm just too used to the show aspect of hibachi. This wasn't a bad choice to celebrate by any stretch of the imagination, it was just missing the "it factor." I always make my way over to Sakura after a long weekend or a busy night out. The service is always phenomenal and they greet you as soon as you come in every single time, as well as your server always greets you pretty quickly after you sit down. My favorite server in particular is Stryder. To be quite honest I don't really adventure too much from what I typically get which if I remember correctly is called the Rock N Roll sushi, and I always get the spicy garlic edamame as an appetizer. This time I got gyoza pork dumplings and they were made really well and came out in a speedy manner. The ambience itself is nice, it is pretty quiet so it can be a peaceful dinner setting. Furthermore, there are sushi chefs in the background making the sushi in live action so that's always nice to see. The prices are affordable but not too affordable to where you question the sushi. We got there at 8:30, waited an hour for our food, and got rushed out by a manager who wouldn't look me in the eye and was talking over me as I was speaking to him. As someone who has worked almost a decade in the restaurant industry, I understand that it's one thing to be busy, quite another to be overlooked and blatantly disrespected by management when we had been nothing but kind and understanding during the wait. This where you want to go for a great selection of rolls as well as some hibachi-style dinners. The parking is clear and open. The restaurant is well decorated and has TVs in all the right places. There's a full bar, which is nice. We were seated right away, but I think you can seat yourself as well. We came in around 5:30 on a Sunday, and it quickly got busy right after 6 pm! We ordered a lot of food. Based on some reviews I read, we ordered everything at once so we didn't have to wait too long. Jenny, our server, brought everything out right in time--appetizers first, then our meals. The soups weren't mouth-searing hot, so we enjoyed them immediately! Okay this was a chance find and wow are we glad we happened upon it. We sat at the sushi bar and definitely recommend this. Hugh or Hu not sure how it's spelled was super fun and friendly and made us feel so welcome. We tried several rolls, all of them were delicious! I think Poseidon was our favorite! New York was delicious too! But we probably will have to get the butterfly again next time we go, as wel. The toro was incredible and we ended for dessert with a spicy scallop hand roll. We are sushi snobs and we loved the food. Even my ginger salad was crisp and cold and the dressing was on point! As proud new FSU parents, we will be frequenting Sakura.
