This is a hidden gem. I walk past this store everyday going to and from work but never tried it out until yesterday. During the holidays, I would see cars double parked just to go here and I wondered why. Now I know: rainbow cookies! These are by far one of the best rainbow cookies in Brooklyn. Better than Rimini's and Villabate. Moist and flavorful. The butter cookies are not as good but they did have the great raspberry filling. Next time, I'll have to get more rainbow cookies and try some other ones as well. read more

The yummy rainbow cookies from this spot hits the spot! I have been on a frenzy looking for the tastiest rainbow cookies ever since I actually started liking them. Yes, I am a recent convert, and I hate to admit I've been missing out on these colorful pieces of heaven! Better late than never, right? Anyway, of the five Italian bakeries around the vicinity, the multicolored cookie from this shop holds a solid positive reputation for flavor and price. When we lived across the street this was a longtime staple in our household. Can't beat anything here, simply the best quality and excellent customer service. My husband and I moved away from Brooklyn a few years ago, and on a recent visit back we inquired about shipping to California. The items arrived beautifully packaged via two day air and the quality was just as we remembered. My husband can't live without his rainbow cookies or butter cookies! We will be probably ordering now on a regular basis for special occasions. You just can't find anything like their baked goods around anywhere! I just found Sal & Jerry's cookies (pre-packaged) at one of my fav stores in Buffalo, NY. All I can say is "WOW". I bought the Fish Cookies and the Biscotti Napoletan. My husband will be lucky if there are any left for him when he returns home from his nine to five. Both were tasty and there were more options. My absolute favorite today is the Biscotti. Why come here when you have 25 other Italian bakeries within a one mile radius (especially with the mega bakery Villabate Alba just a few blocks down)?? It's their breads. Their amazing breads. The lard bread, the olive bread, the spinach bread and the sweet onion focaccia. My friends can't get enough of their spinach bread and I've started to bring them to dinners/potlucks/parties since everyone loves them so much. Just delicious and so so cheap. Why else would I come here? Their delicious rainbow cookies, pignolies, and lace cookies make the trip worth it as well. They are also super friendly here too. I really wanted to give more stars. I pass by all the time and today I decided to get some rainbow cookies and butter cookies (raspberry jam filling) because I was in the mood. The ladies at the counter were so friendly and not overwhelming or pushy at all...loved the relaxed and genuinely friendly service. I ordered a half pound of rainbow cookies and it can already pre-packaged in a box and also half a pound of the butter cookies in a few colors (didn't really matter what color to me). The rainbow cookies were good, almond paste kind without being overly sweet, I just wished it was a bit more tart with more raspberry jam perhaps? But it was moist and soft..The butter cookies however, fell a bit short for me. I wanted buttery "melt in your mouth" cookies with a good dollop of chewy jam but the cookies were kinda dry and bland. Instead of melting. It kinda just crumbles when u bite into it. It was not hard but it could've used more butter I think. The jam also fell short for me, i needed more of it and something more chewy , which I usually save the best for the last! All in all I paid $10.25 for both (I think it's $10/pound). I may find myself in here again because of it's convenient location but then again, there are a lot of options around the neighborhood. read more

I recently started going to Sal & Jerry's. I too own a bakery and have gotten in touch with them through a mutual friend. Once i tried their stuff i could see care was put into each item. The owners care about what leaves their store.....something rare these days. The cookies are all awesome and melt in your mouth! They're always fresh too and the jelly is always soft. The lobster tails are a must have!! The beauty of this place is that they don't keep any pastry on hand. So if you want it they make it fresh. Their cream is unbeleiveable. It's not like other bakeries where it's like eating a pastry shell filled with a greasy substance they call "cream". Recently I had a the sponge cake, the girl behind the counter recommended the plain (the have choc spong too) and it was so fresh and tasty. I'm always impressed with every new item I try at S & J's. Visited my home town in Brooklyn and wanted a sufficient Italian bakery to bring back cookies and bread to San Diego, where I live now. Yelped Sal and Jerry Bakery and read the reviews. The reviews looked good and decided to go there the day of my departure. When I went inside I was listening to the employees talking to a customer. Sounds like they are speaking Italian! My face lit up and thought these cookies and bread has to be good. It's Italian! So I started buying 6lbs of assorted cookies, seven layer cakes and pignoli cookies. Proccuito bread and Italian bread. Done! Jumped on the plane for San Diego. My husband greets me at the San Diego airport, doesn't say hi but says, "Did you get the goods?" Really? No kiss hello?? Ugh! Oh well, we drove home, my husband dives into the cookies and purred. I brought some cookies to our friends and they loved it! I live in California. I've been looking for a source for Croccantini ever since I moved back home from Baltimore. I was thrilled to find Sal & Jerry's, and even more thrilled when I got my first order of Crocccantini and various biscotti. They were just like I remembered. This was the worse bakery I have ever bought from. Their "European" cookies I think was supposed to taste like Italian cookies.. Absolutely no flavor, There sausage bread was burnt. I even make 7llayer cookies better then them and I am not even Italian!!!!! Will never buy from them again!!! This place doesn't even deserve ONE star! I placed an order for a birthday cake. I wanted cannoli cream and banana custard on different layers. I don't care who thinks that is a good combo or not, its what I wanted. Okay, so, I tell the baker himself that this is what I wanted. He agreed, all is well and I went on my marry way. So now I go pick up the cake, I'm told he only put the custard because he didn't like the way the two flavors tasted. Luckily, he wasn't there. I told the girl I don't care if he liked it or not. My father grew up in Sicily, so we mainly eat only Italian food in my household. As a result, I've tried dozens of breads and baked goods from other Italian bakeries in the five boroughs and on Long Island and nothing compares to Sal & Jerry's! This bakery is owned and operated by first-generation Italian-Americans who still use original recipes and baking methods from Sicily. My favorite item from Sal & Jerry's is the semolina bread--you can tell that it has real durum semolina wheat from the nice yellow color and the distinct taste. It's not like that dry white flour Italian bread you buy at most bakeries. It's so delicious on its own that it doesn't need to be dipped in olive oil or butter. The cookies and cakes are all incredibly fresh and use simple ingredients like flour, eggs, milk, real sugar, and natural flavorings like lemon, anisette, etc. While they still stick to the traditional Italian items, Rob from Sal & Jerry's has a real talent for cake decorating and is introducing new custom-decorated cakes and cupcakes. The prosciutto bread (their specialty) and Panna di Casa were both top notch. The sfogliatelli were reasonably sized (unlike the unnaturally oversized ones at, say, Mona Lisa II), and the filling was superb - not too sweet at all. A minor quibble - they could have been a bit crispier - but not enough to lose a star. Will definitely be back to try more of their selections. Cheerful service too. read more

If I could give Sal & Jerry Bakery 100 stars I would. Two years later I am still in love with this bakery and the people that run it. This bakery is run the old fashion Italian way. Everything is made fresh with love and care and it shows. I am from Boston and searched everywhere for a bakery that could recreate the bread that my mother made for us. She has been gone many many years and I searched for a very long time. I was so fortunate to have found Sal & Jerry's. Gianni and his dad went out of their way to make my Easter complete again this year. On very short notice, I contacted them and asked them to make the "Ciccoli" bread that I grew up with and they came through. I can't wait to enjoy it on Easter morning. This bread is incredible. It is as close to the bread my mother made for us as I could ever wish to get. This is no ordinary bread. This is a very old recipe for a very delicious meat filled bread that is very time consuming to make. I would recommend Sal & Jerry's to everyone, even if they don't live in NY. read more
