My first time back since the new owners took over. It was still very loud inside even though we arrived on the earlier side for dinner the bar was pretty full already. Maybe with some rugs layed down it would help the noise? The name and the vision inside don't match, nothing really special to see inside. I ordered nachos as my meal last night, they looked yummy but once I started eating i realized that the chips were very toasted from the oven and crispy and any specks of cheese were dried and burned into the chips (see photo). Not until I dug to the bottom did I find any cheese. Really I could have just done that at home. I didn't send it back because my husband & daughters meals were there and they were enjoying and didn't want theirs to become cold. Hitchcock Tavern has had its ups and downs (over 265 years in business, it happens). The Tavern is in a small town, with not a lot of big business's or industry nearby, so it's primarily a transient (on a major state route) and local population venue. The town does roll-up the sidewalks at 500pm...so I know it's a tough business wherein to make a few bucks. They upped their menu options a few months back (yeah!) and have altered hours a bit, now opening at 11:30am every day. (also yeah!) The menu is a bit limited (which is not bad; work the interesting offerings, update when needed), but very good. I live local to the HT, and stop in maybe once a month for a lunch or before dinner (I avoid Friday and Saturday, as it can get very noisy in there). Today, my wife and I stopped at 300pm for their smash burgers (2 patties, lettuce, onion, tomato) on a Caprese roll. Great roll for the type of burger. I think they can source better tomatoes, as we are in the middle of a farming area, so summer and fall they should consider local produce and make the slices bigger. French fries were good, but not unique. We ordered a bowl of sweet potato fries as a starter, and they were good. Enough to take home and try with some various cocktail sauces we have. I usually get their edamame dumplings, but they were out. If you order their nachos and cheese, it is a big plate, so be warned. They have a few local craft beers, but it would be nice to see a more expansive list. I understand most locals go for the generic beer basic brands, but still...Plenty of craft brewers in Central Mass. Same with the wine; there is a local winery the next town over (shameless plug: Hardwick Winery) that is quite good, and I'm sure a bit of support both ways would be eventful. We have a local cider grower too, that could pair nicely (shameless plug: Ragged Hill) The pricing on the lunch-time specials make HT an easy option to go to. I know that server staff is tough to get, let alone retain, and I often give a bit more slack in the expectations in that area these days. Our server, Holly, also does early opening bar duty, and she made a great dry martini. And those are tough to make, and so easy to screwup. Thanks, Holly. Parking in the lot can be tough on a busy night, but, plenty of free and safe street parking within a 1-3 minute walk. The Tavern is not a romantic venue, exquisite, nor super-fine dining. It is a reliable, local, historic, restaurant to get a solid meal, a good drink, meet with friends, and relax. They do a great function offering I will say (have used it several times), and I am glad to see changing weekly-monthly specials, holiday meals, and have flights when a new liquor hits the shelf. They now have an outdoor tent for the ending summer and fall nights. So to the owners and chef, keep thinking outside the box, and you'll make this a solid start for your next 265 years. read more

Limited menu at opening and new chef coming in next week so grain of salt here.... will update when it's been open a few months. Update from second visit: No real menu changes. Spinach dip was just edible to me and awful to my dining buddy. There's blue cheese in it (which we both love) that doesn't fit well completely takes over any other flavors. Batter on fried chicken and chicken fingers is flavorless and fries are boring. Chicken is fried well, tho, not too greasy and not too dry. The atmosphere in here is pretty good. There's lots of room for groups and even some outdoor seating and service has been good, although I've not been here with it busy. read more

Tonight was one of those happy accidents. The restaurant we were going to didn't have power so we went to Hitchcock Tavern. The bartenders were very attentive, made a great drink and offered suggestions from the menu. I had the summer salad with steak tips which were done perfectly and my husband had the chicken pot pie special, which was outstanding. The restaurant was very clean in the bathrooms were spotless. Had we obeyed the sign we would still be there right now 24 hours later. Need one say more ? Yes So we sat ourselves. And waited. The bartenderess finally came over to welcome us after about 10 minutes, while there was only one gentleman in a green tee-shirt seated at the bar - not busy. Several other people flowed in at this time - who not only got immediate greetings, menus, but also were served food before us. Quirky, that. The food, 2 mushroom &cheese burgers with a fancy name, on soggy buns, was meh. And 2 ice teas. 46$ I guess no salt is used in the kitchen. Don't come for the food There is greater emphasis - as evidenced by all the TV screens (5) in our tiny area - on online gambling - with all the fixings at each table, stubby pencils and paper slips for your numbers combos etc. and the bartenderess slips them into a reader that captures your entry. We ended up here whilst we were tramping around town visiting. Very clean, but very monotone atmosphere. What would be the the banquet hall looked spacious and neat with a historic feel. If traveling back through, I would try somewhere else. I thought the beer prices were reasonable for a 25 oz Bud Light and 16 oz OpaOpa... each were $6.00. The meals were middle of the road, I got a chicken parm sand which open bun and a side of gravy with my fries (which were crinkle cut fried) My husband got the Nashville hot sandwich. The fried chicken itself was quite good, the flavors were ok. The chicken parm I would recommend but the Nashville hot had a hot honey swirl and ranch, no other heat (if you consider that heat). I would also add the the side of Buffalo was basically Frank's and the gravy had a weird, chemical flavor. No wings on the menu. Kind of odd choices. read more

Stopped for lunch today and had a great meal! Wife had a breakfast burger cooked perfectly and I had the shepherds pie that was also very good! I went to the tavern for dinner and wasn't disappointed! It was Taco Tuesday so of course I had to try some of their tacos. I had pulled pork and the fish tacos. They were so good! So, in my defense I never read the reviews before going and had I done so I probably wouldn't have gone. My fiance and I went for dinner on February 11th. I will say the host / waiter (they were the same gentleman) was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. He really was amazing but for anyone looking for a quiet atmosphere where you can hear one another talk this is definitely not the place because there is no fabric or anything to break up sound. My fiance's scallops he said we're delicious, on the other hand, I asked for a burger cooked medium rare and it was more like well done. And, we both asked for Caesar salad. I have never had a Caesar salad made with iceberg lettuce and topped with some sort of Italian dressing. But to make matters worse the center core of the iceberg lettuce was left in big chunks in our supposed Caesar salad. I left most of mine to be thrown away! Very disappointed. Also the posting of pictures shows the main dining room and not at all where we ate. Oh and LOL to add to the atmosphere there were two children-which I believed were children of an employee - we're running through the restaurant and then breaking balloons in the function room which sounded like gunshots.
