Pizzeria Azzurri - Salad: crisp and served on a cold plate

My wife and I recently stopped in at Pizzeria Azzuri in Coal Mountain for lunch. We ordered a…read moreCaesar salad, a Meat Lovers pizza, and finished the meal with a Pazzookie. The Caesar salad was decent, but it didn't quite stand out. Personally, we prefer Caesar salads that arrive already tossed in the dressing, allowing every bite to be evenly coated. Instead, the dressing was served in a small cup on the side, leaving the salad somewhat dry unless you mixed it yourself. The grated cheese appeared to be the same Parmesan available in the shakers on the table. Upgrading to freshly shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano would elevate the dish significantly and make it feel more in line with the quality of the restaurant's other offerings. The Meat Lovers pizza is usually one of our favorites, and while it was still enjoyable, today's pie wasn't quite at its best. The toppings were plentiful and flavorful, but the crust was noticeably overdone and bordered on burnt in several areas. It didn't ruin the pizza, but it did detract from what is normally a consistently excellent product. Dessert was the highlight of the meal. The Pazzookie was warm, rich, and delicious, with a perfect balance of gooey cookie and ice cream. The only improvement I'd suggest would be a slightly larger scoop of ice cream to better complement the generous portion of cookie. Unfortunately, the food wasn't the most memorable part of our visit. What struck both of us--and what has historically kept us from dining inside the restaurant more often--was the persistent fly problem. Flies were everywhere. They buzzed around us while we ate, landed on the table repeatedly, and even attempted to land on our food. There were fly traps visibly hanging on the walls, so it's clear the restaurant is aware of the issue, but whatever measures are currently being taken don't appear to be solving the problem. What makes this particularly disappointing is that this isn't a new issue. The last time we dined inside, I specifically brought the problem to the attention of management. That conversation took place more than a year ago, yet the situation seemed unchanged during our most recent visit. That's unfortunate because Pizzeria Azzuri has a lot going for it. The pizza is generally very good, the dessert is excellent, and the staff has always been friendly. However, when diners are swatting flies away from their table throughout a meal, it becomes difficult to focus on the food. Until the fly issue is addressed, we'll likely continue ordering takeout rather than dining in. Overall, I'd rate the food a solid 4 out of 5 stars, but the dining-room experience is significantly impacted by the ongoing fly problem.

They can't because we're the only one! Muahahaha!" But the Pizooki is the GOAT. It's was like they said "to balance our mid pizza out, Let's go to the lab and whip up the greatest pizooki known to man kind." Overall. Pizza is mid (in their defense... not the worst) and is for sure edible. Pizooki is a must eat. Service was good! Vibe was chill. Family atmosphere.

Indoor and outdoor seating, since the restaurant is on the end of the plaza there's plenty of light, showcasing many booths inside. Our server was Kylie and she was very friendly, helpful, and professional. Enjoyed having her check on us periodically. There were 3 of us eating tonight. One got a Greek side salad which was huge and looked really good. The house salad was also quite large but not as fancy as the Greek. I had the gyro wrap with fries. Having lived in Chicago I've had my share of gyros. This was tasty, pita bread was crisped up nicely. Could've used a few more pieces of meat but it still was absolutely delicious. The others went with Parmesan, one eggplant and one chicken. Both came piping hot, and had a side of spaghetti with marinara sauce and cheese all over the plate. Everyone was pleased tonight. No room for cake but when I saw the cooler with about 12 different options, I almost got one piece to go, even though I'm diabetic. Maybe next time! Reasonable pricing, good options, and definitely some Greek influence here for sure. I'll be back! Support small businesses! Thanks to Kylie and the entire team here (kitchen too!) for a really great meal!
