We ordered to go over the phone and they said they would bring it out because of the rain. The manager himself came out in the rain so his employees nor his customers would get wet. We can't wait to go back for more tasty bbq at Salinas City BBQ!!! The Mrs. and I shared the 3 meat plate (tritip, brisket, and ribs), garlic bread, corn bread, beans, and potato salad. The service was good and we were greeted as we entered. This is a classic BBQ joint where you order at the counter and then they deliver your food to the table. My wife got a can of cold rosé wine and I got a fountain drink (to my Dr. Pepper peeps...they have Dr. Pepper, as well as some other cool soda offerings like a black cherry soda). Pluses on the food: tritip was tender, smoky (not overly smoky) and perfectly seasoned, but kind of cold); the pork ribs were perfectly cooked and had just the right amount of bite; the regular bbq sauce and the spicy were excellent sauces that are sold by the bottle; the BRISKET WAS THE STAR !! Smoke ring, super-super tender meat, the fatty pieces were bomb and the flavor was amazing. Minuses on the food: coldish tritip, ice cold beans that had no flavor. We visited from San Jose after hanging out at the Monterey County Sheriffs Posse jr. Rodeo and what a find! Awesome BBQ! Husband and I split the 3 meat combo, tri tip, pork ribs, and brisket. All were cooked to perfection, but our favorite was the pork ribs. The seasoning was unique and had a delightful sauce. They were lightly sauced and a tad sweet and not overly tangy. Good smoke on all meats. The cornbread was ok, a little dense and a bit dry. Our two kids split the kids meal hot dog. Mac and cheese was a favorite for the kids. read more

TLDR: So, I'll use the Yelp review scale. It was an OK experience, which Yelp says it's three stars. I'll go back and give them another chance when I'm in the area. ______________________ I had high expectations for this place. I saw the reviews and how they received words of praise. There were numerous items on the menu I saw that I liked, and my mouth was watering thinking of this place as we drove up. The two working at the front were great! If you want to sit indoors, there's only a few tables. I didn't count specifically, maybe less than 10. They did have seating outdoors, and that seemed bigger at a quick glance. Of the things we ordered, there were some good things and some things that weren't as good. I got a 4 meat combo, and the brisket and pulled pork were all more solid than the rest. The brisket was really solid. I had ribs and tri-tip complete the foursome, and they weren't as good. The ribs were nothing special. I've had much better ribs unfortunately. I wasn't expecting a Joe's Kansas City BBQ experience, but still. The tri-tip was good at first bite because there was a little fat on that bite, but when I had more, it got worse. The other parts were dry. The sides weren't special. They are a complement to the meats, but I feel it could have been better. The potato salad was better than the coleslaw though, if you had to choose one. I actually liked the potato salad, but it was just ok. I'd go back because of the pulled pork and brisket experience. Oh my goodness! What a hidden gem of Salinas. The barbecue was truly exceptional, tender, delicious, and full of flavor! We had a special treat when they had burnt ends available and wow, I've never had more delicious burnt ends in my life. My personal favorite was the brisket, but our whole table really enjoyed the ribs and the tri-tip as well. Sides are also very good and there's really nowhere you can go wrong at this place.
