A million times, at least, I've been on the 101 and drive past Salinas. Rather, I zoomed past Salinas, I mean, what for? Well, no longer. I will be stopping at Salinas City BBQ. Now, it's not easy. It's a few miles off the freeway, and if you follow ways, it'll have you right, left, left, right, right, go 2 miles, then left, left, right. You know. But in the middle of nothingness and industrial (with a few tumbleweeds) is a bona-fide BBQ place - it's an oasis. Clean, great menu, fair prices, and a great nice-as-pie frontman with personality taking orders and entertaining. My Mom and gf (and pooch) got a couple of brisket plates [reg $17.75 each, 4.0 stars] with 2 sides (delish, fatty) with 2 "just okay" sides: cole slaw (meh) and potato salad (double meh). I got the Santa Maria salad [$22, 4.5 stars] -- avocado, bleu cheese, tomato, onion, cucumber, and bell pepper topped with 1/2 lb of carnitas, my choice. It was huge, absolutely delicious, filling, and I only ate half. Of course, left the other half undressed. (Incidentally, the next day, it was awesome). Oh yes! We ordered catering from Salinas City BBQ for about 40-50 people and it was fantastic. Everyone loved the food, especially the brisket, it was a huge hit! The pulled pork, ribs, and chicken were also delicious. The flavors were spot-on, we ordered food by the pound and would certainly do it again that way. first and foremost, I'm leaving a review because even though I have been given mix reviews from several different people in regards to this place I still wanted to give it my shot since I'm a barbecue fanatic. First, I was greeted by Leah and her customer service was exceptional. She greeted me right away, and she let me know if I had any questions or concerns she could address them and help me with them as well as she also broke down the menu to me and also broke down what the greatest items were available. I would definitely say the customer service was great. Second, this is we're it's starts to get bad as soon as I receive my brisket it was completely covered in grease and had an overpowering amount of seasoning. Then I moved on to the ribs and they were absolutely horrific they did not fall off the bone they were burnt had no sauce on them and were well undercooked. Then I went into the pulled pork and wow, talk about the most greasy meat someone can ever order from my place. It was practically soaked in Greece from the moment it touched the paper on the tray. It was all absorbed on it. Finally, while using my barbecue sauce on the table , I had noticed an unlawful taste to it that I knew wasn't normal as I examined it I notice it bubbling and separating I decided I will get me another one from a different table and the same thing happened the bottle of bbq was separating and bubbling. After I seen that I left my table and left the food and walked out. Ordered via doordash from this place and sadly I couldn't be more letdown. They forgot each side dish that my kids selected, causing them to still be hungry after eating. My coleslaw had a dead fly in it, that I only found while eating it. So gross! Also my brisket was extremely dry which tends to lead me to believe food here may sit out a lot. Sad to pay good money for a meal and have it turn out so poorly. When I called to discuss, there was no manager available until 4-5pm tomorrow. What a great find! So i have to travel for work to salinas and i have to say, i hate this city with a passion. But at least i found this good place to eat! The prices are expensive, and i get it. The food is LEGIT! I got the large order of brisket and a double side of mac n cheese. I could barely drive home after. All the way to pismo beach, i was trying to stay awake. But i digress. Service: Aaron is a very knowledgeable staff. He patiently explained the menu to us (while some place when we ask too much questions people usually start to act bothered). He gave us new containers of sauce for our to-go leftovers. Food: Chicken breast was phenomenally juicy. We ate all the white meat first forgetting we came here for the thighs! Price: We were surprised to pay less than $27 for half a chicken, two sides, and a fountain drink. Ambiance: There are both seating outdoor and indoor. Such a revelation. I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula and never really knew good barbeque.. Then my sisters went to Duke in North Carolina and I got to know a few cowboys and ranchers at Davis. I also had boys who are carnivores. After a weekend at the Salinas Rodeo, I was on my way back North and googled BBQ. The reviews were great and this place lived up to the hype. It is comfortable and casual with great seating options. I ordered a two meat plate with brisket and ribs and ordered cornbread with sides or macaroni and potato salad. Portion size definitely allowed for two meal, even with me stuffing myself because the lean brisket and meaty ribs were so good, Smoky and very tender. Sauces were sublime. The cornbread was amazing. Service was quite good for a counter service restaurant. I was checked on a few times and definitely got the impression that the other parties were regulars from the neighborhood. Luckily I still have family in Carmel and will return to try bbq again as this is one of the best bbq places that I have tried in California. read more

This was a random find on the way to SLO with my friend. We were coming from Danville and we were getting hungry and wanted to see if there was any good BBQ nearby before continuing on our 3 hour drive. This popped up fast and was only 5 mins away so we decided to try it. The parking isn't so big but luckily there was a spot for a Wednesday. Did our own sample pack with 4 meats we wanted to try, they were all really yummy, and i would say i enjoyed the Tri Tip the best because of the nice smoky taste it gave, next id say the brisket because its my always go to for BBQ (asked for their fatty piece & they delivered), then it's would be the ribs being so flavorful (it wasn't fall off the bones but it was tender) then last is the Hot Link, it had good flavor and a kick. We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and immediately when we pulled up to the restaurant, we could smell the barbecue coming from the back. It's a delicious smell. The restaurant was packed on the inside as it holds about 25 people. We sat outside on the picnic tables, which can hold about another 20 people. The service was very good and the food was tasty. The brisket is very tender and easy to cut with a fork. The barbecue sauces are very tasty and we especially liked the spicy. I got the smoked brisket w/ a side of potato salad & beans and a cup of water. The smoked brisket was juicy, but unfortunately bland outside of the fat on the brisket which was delicious. They offer two sauces, the original sauce and a spicy. Overpoweringly sweet. The beans were a chili/baked mix and included pork (no no-pork option) that tasted like the original bbq sauce.
