This is our go to place for Hawaiian Barbecue. A typical Hawaiian plate with 2 scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad with choice of entrees. Their Kuala park is excellent, juicy and flavorful, and the bottom layer of cabbage that cooks in the Kuala pork juices puts it over the top. The BBQ chicken and beef is delicious as well with the chicken having great spice level. The regular portion sizes are so large (they do have smaller, mini offerings), we typically take half home with us. They offer several different side sauces, soy, teriyaki, katsu and a hot sauce, my favorite is katsu. Service is always welcoming and friendly. The restaurant is clean and comfortable with plenty of seating. They do have a few outside tables if you wish to brave the Salinas weather. Food? I LOVED the flavor of the "BBQ" Chicken and the spiciness of the Island Fire Chicken. So moist! The portions are HUGE! I ordered a Chicken Combo and Spam Musubi to go. For my combo I asked for Island Fire Chicken instead of Chicken Katsu. When I got home to Prunedale, everything was still piping hot! The combo comes with 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop of macaroni salad. The chicken, which is very saucy, was laid upon a bed of raw cabbage. The heat of the chicken caused the cabbage to be pleasantly wilted. The chicken thighs were cut into strips, marinated and cooked into moist yumminess. The "BBQ" was more of a teriyaki sauce that was surprisingly not sweet but still very delicious. The Island Fire marinade was very good. It tasted of pineapple and was pretty spicy, although, again, not sweet. I really enjoyed the marinades NOT being sweet but this is not typical of Island cuisine. The macaroni salad was swimming in mayo. Atypically, there was no fresh and crunchy component; no green onions, no celery, and no carrots. Also, the macaroni salad contained no sugar. The next time I order it, I would ask for double the cabbage, hold the macaroni salad. When I nuked it the next evening for dinner, I quickly stir fried chopped cabbage, chopped onion, and sliced carrot as a side. Delicious and still so moist! The Spam Musubi was a very large portion but the Spam wasn't fried in shoyu, and the rice was not well seasoned. You get two large musubis for around $7. Although I wasn't impressed with my bite when it was fresh, the next morning, I popped it in the air fryer for 5 minutes. OMG! The ends of the roll with crispy rice, and the crisped nori wrapper dipped in teriyaki sauce was a taste sensation! Loved it! Service? The young woman greeted me appropriately and helped me efficiently. Ambiance? The place was clean, but the furniture was rode hard and put away wet. The ceiling fans were rotating even though the high today was 62 degrees. It's a good thing the food is served so hot, because the frigid temp of the restaurant would chill it quickly. I have been to Haiku twice. Both times the customer service has been really helpful. They answered questions and made adjustments to the order. The portions a generous, enough for two to three people with some of their plates. On one plate I asked if we could switch out one meat for another and they accommodated the adjustment. For some changes there is an up-charge but that makes sense as some meats are pricier than others. The place looks like a diner, nothing fancy. Has about ten tables/booths. Will definitely go again. We tried two combo plates with three meats, and masubi, both chicken and tuna. The tuna did feel like canned tuna, so I probably won't get that one again but the chicken was good. I've been coming here for the past two years and I love it! I always get the Kalua pork meal the pork has so much flavor I crave it often. The portions are great a full meal lasts me all day, eating half then the rest later. If you're not feeling an all day meal or don't usually finish your food, their mini meals are perfect. It's basically the portions cut in half for a lower price :) I originally started coming for spam masubi but for one order (two masubis), it's pretty expensive. I think you're better off trying your luck making it at home. Besides that their chicken plates are all very yummy too and I always get extra Mac salad on the side! I had the #4 BBQ & Katsu Mix: strips of BBQ Chicken and BBQ Beef and a slice of chicken katsu (honey and panko crust) included two scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad. Sort of like island plate lunch style. THE BBQ beef and BBQ chicken was tender and flavorful. The chicken katsu was crispy and had a sweet taste to it. There is sautéed cabbage that sits below the proteins. I also got the spam musubi. These came out warm and silky. There are two pieces and definitely could be a meal.
