Love this place! So quaint and comforting. It takes you back in time once you enter. I got a lunch box which comes with a sandwich, side, deviled egg half, pecan cheese wafer and cupcake. I chose egg salad for my sandwich and potato salad for my side. Everything was so tasty. The potato salad is a little sweeter than I'd prefer but still really good. The staff was so very friendly and the place was very clean.

I've been a patron of Sally Bell's since they were on Grace near Laurel. Parking is much better at this newer location, though (there's a parking lot beside the building). Traditionally, the workers would overwhelmingly be compromised of elderly women which was quite comforting, as if your grandma was preparing your lunch. Nowadays, the staff is a bit more diverse. They're famous for their box lunches and especially their potato salad which folks usually pre-order around major holidays. The lines get INSANE around that time. As far as the boxed lunch, I usually opt for chicken salad and sometimes the ham but I truly wish they added more deli meat. I'm a huge fan of the old-fashioned cupcakes and sometimes go just for those. Love them dearly and hope this RVA staple never leaves.

After hearing about this restaurant for years we finally stopped in to pick up boxed lunches. We ordered online and they were available at the time specified. Super easy to pick up! We had 5 boxes and each was correct. We tried the pimento cheese, chicken salad and ham for the sandwiches. Our sides were macaroni salad and potato salad. We tried 4 different cupcakes. Each one of really enjoyed the boxed lunch. The deviled eggs were delicious. We will definitely order again - it was fast, easy and delicious!!

Chicken sandwich was moist, great bread. Potato salad was on the sweeter side, great compliment to the salty. The chunks of potato were nice and tender. Deviled egg and wafer tasted good. The caramel cupcake was a bit sweet to my taste, but thats my bad for getting a caramel cake. The frosting is also the hard type, which isnt my most favorite. However, the mocha cupcake my bf got was very good!

It's amazing something this simple can be this delicious. A great lunch spot with delicious sandwiches and cupcakes. Can't go wrong.

No signage, not detailed on the menu, just an ambush once you've placed your order. It's a bs fee to begin with, but concealing it until the last minute is unethical. I'm guessing it will catch up with y'all as these sorts of sketchy business practices often do.

We were surprised by the size of the restaurant when we walked in. It seems smaller from the outside; not that it was huge, just deceiving. It reminded me of a homey Jason's Deli (IYKYK). The woman at the counter was helpful and kind. We had a few questions about some items on the menu, and she asked the kitchen staff anything that she didn't know offhand. We decided on the fried cauliflower for an appetizer; it was monstrously huge, and much more flavorful than I expected. The spices and textures on the plate added a lot to the dish's overall essence. I ordered the Rachel for an entree, and my partner ordered the Sharona. I subbed the chips for a side salad. The salad was tangy or tart, almost bitter. I didn't mind; I thought it was quite good. It is a lot of acidity if you are not expecting it. The Rachel was fantastic, except that the coleslaw had some onion bits mixed in. We are not onion fans in this household. Ha The Sharona would have been a better choice, as I much prefer pickles to oniony coleslaw. My partner said she really liked hers. We had half a sandwich each for leftovers the next day, and shared the leftover chips, since I finished off my salad the night before. The sandwiches heated up exquisitely in the oven at 325°F for 15 minutes. I felt that Susie's is a definite hidden gem, and I can recommend it to anyone who likes a well-made sandwich. I will be back to sample more of the menu and report back my findings at a future date.

It was a weekday after work. I went to my homegirl's house because I missed her birthday I offered to take her out someplace nice. She said no way man and immediately said we were going to this sandwich shop. This was the only thing she wanted. So we were gonna veg out on her couch. Have a couple cocktails and whatever else and watch something on TV. And her new couch is the bees knees. For me, the sandwich was perfect. The bread was beautiful and crusty. I was afraid it was going to be toasted and too crusty, and I'd be fighting to bite it and my sandwich guts spilling out while cutting up my gums and the roof of my mouth like it's Captain crunch or something.. BUT NO! It was PERFECT to bite through. They load you up with the meat they're not stingy. And the sauces... BABY! The aïoli was fantastic. My only beef is that horseradish aioli needed a little bit more of a kick, but that's a personal problem. My friend got the chicken Caesar and I see why it's popular. It is so garlicky and delicious. I already have plans on what I'm gonna get next time I go and I don't live close so it's gonna take a special trip and I intend to make it.

But every once in a while, you have to throw the diet out the window and let the sandwich win. And this sandwich won. I'd post a picture, but apparently my wife and I decided photography was less important than eating it. We absolutely demolished it before either of us thought, "Hey, we should take a picture." Even better, one sandwich was plenty for both of us. Generous portion, incredible flavor, and every bite was worth whatever guilt I was supposed to feel afterward. Next visit, I'm going after the steak sandwich. If it's even half as good as this one, I may have just found my new favorite sandwich spot. 10/10 -- would happily skip the diet again.

The servers were also tending the bar which was getting decent traffic even at lunchtime. My dining partner says there is a pool table in a back room, and that could be fun to fold into a longer visit. The piped in music was light jazz. The menu is oriented around philly cheesesteaks and variations. I ordered the chicken philly, which was large enough to make two lunches (I brought half home.) The flavor was decent, with seasoned or marinated chicken chunks and veggies & cheese on a sturdy roll. It came with a decent serving of chips. We were served a juice glass of room temp water on arrival and no drink order was taken. Negatives were related to pacing. It took a lot of time for the food to come out. We were pushed to eat even half of our sandwiches within the hour my dining partner had for lunch. The server did not check back after dropping the plates, which could have been an issue if we needed more water. And getting the check was a challenge that took way too long considering how small the place is. This is a decent place to grab a sandwich or a drink if you have the time or live in the neighborhood.

The owner recently bought the building and plans to rebrand since they're now the only vendor there. Even better, they're opening a second location at Harrison and Grace St. soon! I ordered the Soprano sub, and it was absolutely incredible. It comes loaded with hot soppressata, capicola, ham, sharp provolone, arugula, olive salad, red onion, vinaigrette, and mayo on fresh bread. I added sweet peppers and banana peppers for a little extra punch, and it was a great choice. The flavors were perfectly balanced--the salty meats paired beautifully with the tangy olive salad and sharp provolone, while the vinaigrette and mayo brought everything together. The bread was amazing--crusty on the outside, soft on the inside--and it turns out they get it from New York City! The owner is such a nice guy, and we ended up chatting for a while about his bread sourcing and plans for the business. You can tell he's passionate about what he does, and it really comes through in the food. Polpetti is a hidden gem that deserves all the praise it gets. The next family in line included 2 elderly women and a baby all dressed gorgeous, they also were told they had to wait outside in 105 weather. After about 20 minutes of waiting, (I was just going to tell them to forget it) they said our table was ready. Well, instead of inside with AC as we requested we were seated in a gazebo porch area that they claimed had AC.
