I went to VCU from 2006-2010 and stayed in RVA for 2 years after...never have I ever stepped foot inside until now and I regret it. Imagine all the top grandma cooks in the city getting together and opening up a shop. This is what Sally Bell is. I only stopped in to get cupcakes but they have lunch boxes available. I got the Mocha Devil's Food Cake and Orange Yellow Batter. What I liked about their cupcakes is the fact the frosting covers the entire cupcake rather than just sits on top. That means the frosting to cake ratio is just perfect. The cake is moist and you can just taste grandma's cooking. read more

What an amazing place to get amazing but simple food. I drove exactly an hour and a half to get to this establishment and I thought it was quite easy to do the curbside pick up. I ordered three box lunches and a few other things. But I have to recommend the BoxLunch to anybody because it gives you just a little bit of everything. The egg is so creamy and well put together, the cupcakes are amazing and not sugary at all, the sandwich oh my god so juicy on that homemade roll is like heaven. I got a potato salad in the box meal and I have to say that I've never eaten so much potato salad in my entire life. It was like the potato gods were saying to the cooks in the back great job. I have to say probably the most favorite but surprising part was the Alice in wonderland sized dessert that I got with the sweet potato tart. Had lunch there yesterday. We called in our order. And waited in the car. Lunch was made and brought out to our car. Several other cars all received the meal to their cars. The parking lot for the restaurant is in the back. Across the street. So that was appreciated. As for our lunch. I ordered their box lunch. And spouse ordered the bag lunch. Both got roast beef and Swiss on a roll. It also had mayonnaise on it with lettuce. Sandwich was very good. Bag lunch came with a cupcake. The box had a cupcake, potato salad a half deviled egg and tiny biscuit with a pecan on it. The potato salad was delicious I absolutely loved it. The tiny biscuit was very good. Tiny little bite. And the deviled egg was great. Last was the cupcake. We both got the deviled food cupcake. Very chocolatey and the chocolate frosting perfect. The only problem with the bag lunch is a lot of the frosting stuck to the bag. Overall loved the take out lunch. read more

The best traditional lunch in richmond. I always get the chicken salad which comes on a freshly baked yeast roll. Every box comes with a side (macaroni salad and potato salad are my favorites), a deviled egg and a cupcake (strawberry or lemon). Everything is made fresh in house by the sweetest southern ladies you ever want to meet. Everything tastes like your grandma and her friends made it and when you look around you may just believe it. They also do boxed lunches for meetings which are a perfect day escape from bland and boring Panera! read more

I used to work about four blocks away and had lunch here at least once a week. For what it is -- a takeout boxed lunch kind of place -- it's pretty fantastic. The potato salad is amazing... secret recipe amazing... among the best I've ever had. The tarts are both pretty and delicious. For my sandwich, I always got the chicken salad. Yum in a box! Perfect for picnics. The ladies who run the counter are always as sweet as they can be, too. read more

Sally Bell's did mot disappoint! My mom has talked for years about how she'd go there for the box lunches when she was younger- she can testify that they are just as tasty as they used to be, I can say they definitely lived up to the hype she created in our conversations. Unique, many choices, great service. Due to covid we called and placed our order when we were 10 minutes away, and someone brought it to the back parking lot for us. Can't wait to go back! read more

Great hidden lunch spot on the VCU campus. I've been here for four years and had no idea this place existed until a few months ago. It's a shame because I've been missing out. Sally Bell's is a nice change of pace from Chipotle/Noodles and Co/Panera, although the price leaves a bit to be desired. I got the box meal with a chicken salad sandwich, potato salad, and a chocolate cupcake. Came with a little cheese cracker and half deviled egg as well. Everything was good, especially the potato salad. I love big chunks of potato in my potato salad, and this delivered. The chicken salad sandwich was good too, but I wish the chicken salad part had a bit more kick. The box filled me up, but if you're used to eating chipotle sized bowls of food you may feel a little jipped when you finish your meal. The prices here are too high. I paid $11.34 for the box plus a drink. Either they need to give you more food (maybe make the sandwiches bigger?), or bring the price down. I really liked the food here, but that's too much for me to pay for lunch on any kind of regular basis. Helpful hint: Make sure you grab a ticket from the machine when you order. They'll call your number when its your turn to order. read more

Good God! The food there was fantastic! I had a chicken salad sandwich, Mac Salad, and a cupcake with a cream cheese and almond frosting. My wife had the egg salad sandwich, and that was good as well. It's a family run business in downtown Richmond. The ladies who run the place were very nice, and I can't say enough nice things about their food. 2 thumbs up!!! read more

Sally Bell's is a Richmond treasure. I took a friend from out of town to Sally Bell's today for lunch and she absolutely loved it. We got two different boxed lunches and shared. I *finally* got to stop at Sally Bell's! On our way to the OBX for a long weekend, we stopped and got two boxed lunches and a chocolate pie to go. I had the Smithfield Ham with Swiss on a roll, with potato salad and a strawberry frosted cupcake. My husband had the turkey and Swiss on wheat, with macaroni salad, and a chocolate frosted cupcake. Loved it all. The ladies at the counter were very sweet. Definitely worth a stop! My absolute favorite Richmond institution. You don't get much more classic, Southern Richmond than a box lunch from Sally Bell's. I don't think I've ever had anything other than the chicken salad and potato salad because there's no need to--it's that addictive. They make their own mayonnaise. That is not a typo. Everything is made from scratch and nothing is leftover longer than a night or so. Fresh and classic. The cupcakes are also extremely delicious and unique; they ice them upside-down for the maximum icing-to-cake ratio. Wow. So good. I usually go for the standard O.G. of chocolate iced, yellow cake and it never disappoints. Be sure to place large orders at least a week ahead of time...longer if it is for Thanksgiving or Christmas! They will sell out/max out. And for good reason...these are made with TLC! read more

I read an article about the box lunches here recently and knew I had to go ASAP. I noticed immediately that this place was IMMACULATE. It's pretty no frills, you just walk up and place your order. There is a big board of all the choices, with baked goods behind the glass. The service is friendly enough and you get your food quickly. The $10 box lunches come with a sandwich, deviled egg, potato salad, a cheese wafer, and a cupcake. I have been in three times now and have tried the cream cheese and olive sandwich and the pimento cheese sandwich. The pimento cheese was much better than the cream cheese, although, the pimento cheese is served at room temp. The potato salad was also room temp. It's a little questionable. The potato salad and deviled eggs are also sweet, which isn't my thing, so I usually opt for chips. The cupcake selection is vast, but the three I have tried have all been a little dry. Overall, it's okay. I feel like it's a little expensive for what you get and the food isn't outstanding. read more

You can get better chicken salad and potato salad at Costco, and their employees are actually pleasant and enjoy working there. The deviled egg was bland, and the cheese wafer was a glorified Cheese-It with a pecan slapped on top. Cupcake was decent, but ultimately not worth the grouchy (and dare I say slightly prejudiced) customer service. read more

I've been looking forward to eating from this establishment for a long time and it did not disappoint! The box lunch is a perfect portion size. Pricey? Some would say yes but being from the NYC area, this is a bargain! Chicken salad sandwich didn't have too much seasoning which is fine with me as I paired it with cole slaw & potato salad. The cupcake is a nice treat to finish the meal. As you'll get to know, they are only taking orders online, Order early or even the day before as their hours are 10a-2p M-F, NO WEEKENDS, for now... Sally bells will always be a favorite Richmond staple! They do have some indoor seating but, personally I'm obsessed with the box lunches. My favorite things to get are the pimento cheese sandwich, potato salad, strawberry upside down cupcake and the deviled egg! I wish there was another location in the west end! It was good. That's it. I appreciate all the nostalgia that folks have for the place and the fact that everything is made there. But, is it really that great? Not really. That being said, I'm glad that we stopped by on our way through Richmond and gave it the respect it deserves. Should you stop by there as well? Yes, it's worth the visit. Great food, horrible service. With their bright new shiny location, and over a dozen people roaming the kitchen churning out pre made selections you'd think that place could function like a well oiled box lunch making machine. Sadly it's quite the opposite. With only 2 ladies left to take orders and assemble the boxes even though I showed up the minute the opened it took 16 minutes to get 2 lunches. If you're a pharmaceutical rep looking to order ahead and feed an office you'll be a hit! But if you just want to walk in and get a quick lunch bring your patience. read more

Ok Folks here is the TRUTH. This place is a total rip off. I paid $11.06 for a boxed lunch which consisted of a tiny ham sandwich the size of a slider with about 1 ounce of meat on it, no cheese and 1 pickle coin. You would think the rolls they bake were good but not really. The whole thing tasted off. The little cookie they give you has been downsized to something close to your thumb nail. The cupcake and the potato salad were ok but nothing spectacular. The deviled egg is tiny also. When you see the size of it you are going to laugh. If all of these things were sold a la carte for what you pay total in the boxed lunch cost no one would buy them. Here is what the stuff is actually worth $1.50 for the little sandwich, $1.40 for the cupcake, another $1.40 for the miniature cup of potato salad, a quarter for the half egg and a nickel for the cookie bite. On top of it being a rip off they were kind of rude on the phone. The place is still not open to the public and they stated they will not let anyone inside. You have to call from the parking lot and possibly get put on hold for 10 minutes. Apparently they still get really busy and are not that courteous to their customers. I had to hang up and call back. The next person that answered took my order. I kind of wish they didn't because I was getting ready to leave and can think of 20 other places to get something good to eat for lunch for 11 bucks where I did not have to eat out of a paper box sitting in my car. Save your money and go somewhere else where they are appreciative of your business. There is absolutely no reason for me to ever go back here. read more

2 stars. Really overrated. Sure it has been around forever. But $12.04 for a boxed lunch and drink (including tax) for food that is mediocre is not a good value. It was nice that the lunch had a a number of items. And the quantity was ok. (My wife and I split a lunch but neither of us are huge eaters) But the chocolate chocolate cupcake was meh. The roast beef sandwich was meh. Potato salad was good. I recommend seeking out other options. read more

I love Sally Bell's. Once a year, my company orders lunch from Sally Bell's for our annual sales meeting. This year we've grown to a team of 21 and so I had a very large order to place. They are closed on Mondays and we needed our lunch for Tuesday. I called them on Friday and faxed in the order by Friday EOD at their request. When I went to pick everything up on Tuesday everything was boxed and being put into a bag as I walked in. I paid and they helped me walk this massive box to my car. The ladies who work here are sweet but focused. The kitchen is huge and there are always orders being called in and people waiting for their box to go. You have the option of a box or bag lunch... I always go with the box which includes the sandwich of your choice, side of choice, dessert of choice and a deviled egg on the side. It's like your mom packed your lunch and everything is homemade daily. read more

It is a lot of acidity if you are not expecting it. The Rachel was fantastic, except that the coleslaw had some onion bits mixed in. We are not onion fans in this household. Ha The Sharona would have been a better choice, as I much prefer pickles to oniony coleslaw. My partner said she really liked hers. We had half a sandwich each for leftovers the next day, and shared the leftover chips, since I finished off my salad the night before. The sandwiches heated up exquisitely in the oven at 325°F for 15 minutes. I felt that Susie's is a definite hidden gem, and I can recommend it to anyone who likes a well-made sandwich. We were served a juice glass of room temp water on arrival and no drink order was taken. Negatives were related to pacing. It took a lot of time for the food to come out. We were pushed to eat even half of our sandwiches within the hour my dining partner had for lunch. The server did not check back after dropping the plates, which could have been an issue if we needed more water. And getting the check was a challenge that took way too long considering how small the place is. This is a decent place to grab a sandwich or a drink if you have the time or live in the neighborhood.

The atmosphere was actually pretty cool. The food was disappointing.

It comes loaded with hot soppressata, capicola, ham, sharp provolone, arugula, olive salad, red onion, vinaigrette, and mayo on fresh bread. I added sweet peppers and banana peppers for a little extra punch, and it was a great choice. The flavors were perfectly balanced--the salty meats paired beautifully with the tangy olive salad and sharp provolone, while the vinaigrette and mayo brought everything together. The bread was amazing--crusty on the outside, soft on the inside--and it turns out they get it from New York City! The owner is such a nice guy, and we ended up chatting for a while about his bread sourcing and plans for the business. You can tell he's passionate about what he does, and it really comes through in the food. Polpetti is a hidden gem that deserves all the praise it gets. Whether you're a sandwich aficionado or just looking for a great meal, this spot is worth the visit. I can't wait to come back and try more--and to check out their new location when it opens!

Well, instead of inside with AC as we requested we were seated in a gazebo porch area that they claimed had AC. By this time we were so desperate for cool, we didn't argue that we had requested INSIDE not whatever this room was. It ended up being like sitting in a tuna can. So uncomfortable, my husband and bro in law just went and sat in the car with the AC blasting. Waitress was sporadic to put it nicely. Meanwhile, back inside the booth across from the hostess stand was still empty. Food was fine. But I don't think this place will be around much longer.

A "2", not for the food which is ok, but for a failed online ordering experience, and lack of care about my experience that left a slight bitter taste not at all like the corn beef spread I wanted. I specifically ordered corned beef spread at 10am to be picked up at 1:15 today, because I know it's a big seller and I wanted to assure that I had what I wanted before traveling 30 minutes to pick it up. I arrived at Sally Bells that was vacant, as it was just post lunch period, only to find out they were clueless about my order. An employee then went back and retrieved my order from a print out. I was then told they'd make it for me right then, which is okay because I like freshness, but then came back and told me they were out of corned beef spread! I was offered a mild "sorry our online ordering system doesn't work," and "what else would you like?" I expressed my displeasure, especially after receiving a confirmation email, after easily ordering online with no hiccups. I declined anything else because I didn't want anything else. I wasn't offered an extra cracker or even 10% off, although I did still want the 2 boxes for other people who were listed on the order that they didn't print out until I arrived.... And then began my wait of 20 minutes for them to prepare these boxes with no one else waiting for orders! I might come back, but after being told by the employee that the online system is terribly unreliable and it needs to be "fixed," I won't be ordering online again, if at all. I didn't get my lunch today and that makes me sad...... And still hungry! Neither would my dining partner. My creamy pesto sandwich tasted of cucumber and Borsin cheese. And looking at it closer? I'm pretty sure they just use garlic flavored Borsin cheese spread. There was nothing that tasted or looked like a basil-y pesto on the sandwich. The blondie had no flavor unless you ate a chocolate chip. No taste of vanilla or brown sugar. Just straight sweet and occasionally some chocolate. The potato salad was passable, though a lot of the potatoes were crunchy. That might just be a preference thing on my part. I don't like the potatoes to be crunchy in my potato salad Honestly, the whole thing came off as lazy and ordinary. The only good things I'll say is that they use very fresh ingredients. It's obvious they care about freshness. We were very pleased by how good the lettuce and apples were on our different sandwiches. The lemon square was decent as well. Good shortbread crust. But honestly? I don't know who they think they are, charging nearly $30 for two boxed lunches for something that wasn't worth $10 together. If you need boxed lunches there are better options out there at lower prices. Miss this place.

I got orange juice and it came in a giant glass and it was clearly from concentrate. Maybe that works in Iowa but at a specialty restaurant in a fashionable town I want fresh squeeze orange juice. I don't need 10 gallons of it. I would rather have a little juice glass full of fresh orange juice than a gallon of concentrated crap. I just don't think these people understand their clientele and they don't do anything special like blueberries for your pancakes.... There's so many things you can do with breakfast and they just did the bare minimum. It's so disappointing to have the restaurant with the absolute best geography in our community barely trying to make decent food or make customers comfortable in a clean environment. I was charitable when I gave them two stars because I actually felt bad. I want them to succeed, but they really need to rethink what they're doing and try a lot harder.

We waited to get so many items. We already had lunch plans so we did not opt for a sandwich, but there were a few people there behind us ready to order sandwiches.
