The rest of it was not made fresh and a real disappointment. I used to love the deviled eggs and ordered two extras. Big mistake. These tasted at least a day old had very little flavor if anything at all .Plus at .89 for half an egg, they are TINY. The cupcake was definitely not soft and fresh. Arrived at Sally Bell's around 2:00. This seemed to be a perfect time on a Wednesday. This was my first time at the new location so I had to figure out the e act location which is right across from the Science Museum of Virginia. There is very limited off street parking but we were able to find a spot right in front. My sister and I both ordered the dinner boxes for about $8.00 and it came with a side (potato salad for us of course), a deviled egg, cupcake and cheese wafer. This has to be one of RVA's city's best known lunch spots! My parents have been eating here for years which means that they HAVE to take me when I'm in town. Today I ordered the chicken salad box lunch. It comes with a sandwich and a side, half and deviled egg, a cheese wafer AND dessert! The Bad: Price/Portion Size- When my coworker came back with my boxed lunch, I looked around my unit to see where the hidden cameras were. I thought for sure I was being punked. I paid a little under $10 for this boxed lunch and when she brought it back to me, I swear I could have fit everything inside the box in the palm of my hand. The Smithfield Ham "sandwich" was smaller than the size of a McDonalds sausage biscuit. I got the Mocha Devil's Food Cake and Orange Yellow Batter. What I liked about their cupcakes is the fact the frosting covers the entire cupcake rather than just sits on top. Had lunch there yesterday. We called in our order. And waited in the car. Lunch was made and brought out to our car. Several other cars all received the meal to their cars. The parking lot for the restaurant is in the back. Across the street. So that was appreciated. As for our lunch. I ordered their box lunch. And spouse ordered the bag lunch. Great hidden lunch spot on the VCU campus. I've been here for four years and had no idea this place existed until a few months ago. It's a shame because I've been missing out. Sally Bell's is a nice change of pace from Chipotle/Noodles and Co/Panera, although the price leaves a bit to be desired. I got the box meal with a chicken salad sandwich, potato salad, and a chocolate cupcake. Came with a little cheese cracker and half deviled egg as well. Everything was good, especially the potato salad. I love big chunks of potato in my potato salad, and this delivered. The chicken salad sandwich was good too, but I wish the chicken salad part had a bit more kick. The box filled me up, but if you're used to eating chipotle sized bowls of food you may feel a little jipped when you finish your meal. The prices here are too high. I paid $11.34 for the box plus a drink. Either they need to give you more food (maybe make the sandwiches bigger?), or bring the price down. I really liked the food here, but that's too much for me to pay for lunch on any kind of regular basis. Helpful hint: Make sure you grab a ticket from the machine when you order. My absolute favorite Richmond institution. You don't get much more classic, Southern Richmond than a box lunch from Sally Bell's. I don't think I've ever had anything other than the chicken salad and potato salad because there's no need to--it's that addictive. They make their own mayonnaise. That is not a typo. Everything is made from scratch and nothing is leftover longer than a night or so. Fresh and classic. The cupcakes are also extremely delicious and unique; they ice them upside-down for the maximum icing-to-cake ratio. Wow. So good. I usually go for the standard O.G. of chocolate iced, yellow cake and it never disappoints. There is a big board of all the choices, with baked goods behind the glass. The service is friendly enough and you get your food quickly. The $10 box lunches come with a sandwich, deviled egg, potato salad, a cheese wafer, and a cupcake. I have been in three times now and have tried the cream cheese and olive sandwich and the pimento cheese sandwich. The pimento cheese was much better than the cream cheese, although, the pimento cheese is served at room temp. The potato salad was also room temp. It's a little questionable. The potato salad and deviled eggs are also sweet, which isn't my thing, so I usually opt for chips. The cupcake selection is vast, but the three I have tried have all been a little dry. Ok Folks here is the TRUTH. This place is a total rip off. I paid $11.06 for a boxed lunch which consisted of a tiny ham sandwich the size of a slider with about 1 ounce of meat on it, no cheese and 1 pickle coin. You would think the rolls they bake were good but not really. The whole thing tasted off. The little cookie they give you has been downsized to something close to your thumb nail. The cupcake and the potato salad were ok but nothing spectacular. The deviled egg is tiny also. When you see the size of it you are going to laugh. If all of these things were sold a la carte for what you pay total in the boxed lunch cost no one would buy them. Here is what the stuff is actually worth $1.50 for the little sandwich, $1.40 for the cupcake, another $1.40 for the miniature cup of potato salad, a quarter for the half egg and a nickel for the cookie bite. On top of it being a rip off they were kind of rude on the phone. The place is still not open to the public and they stated they will not let anyone inside. You have to call from the parking lot and possibly get put on hold for 10 minutes. Apparently they still get really busy and are not that courteous to their customers. I had to hang up and call back. The next person that answered took my order. I kind of wish they didn't because I was getting ready to leave and can think of 20 other places to get something good to eat for lunch for 11 bucks where I did not have to eat out of a paper box sitting in my car. I love Sally Bell's. Once a year, my company orders lunch from Sally Bell's for our annual sales meeting. This year we've grown to a team of 21 and so I had a very large order to place. They are closed on Mondays and we needed our lunch for Tuesday. I called them on Friday and faxed in the order by Friday EOD at their request. When I went to pick everything up on Tuesday everything was boxed and being put into a bag as I walked in. I paid and they helped me walk this massive box to my car. The ladies who work here are sweet but focused. The kitchen is huge and there are always orders being called in and people waiting for their box to go. You have the option of a box or bag lunch... I always go with the box which includes the sandwich of your choice, side of choice, dessert of choice and a deviled egg on the side. OK so this might not be a fair review for lunch because I picked up food for my wife, I did not eat it myself. However I have been here before for lunch previously before it was relocated due to the VCU expansion. This place is a wonderful Richmond classic. The company my wife works for gets box lunches here all of the time, which is great because it is supporting a true local Richmond business. Everything they make here is from scratch including all of their sauces that they put on the sandwiches. These folks really know how to make sandwiches, and if your company needs catered boxed lunches for a luncheon or such this is a great place to go! I'm sure the locals from where it was previously since 1924 in the VCU district will be missing it's original location, even though it's just down the street a bit. I tried the box lunch for the first time ordering through uber eats. I was overall pretty pleased with my experience. My only complaint is I wish there were descriptions under the sandwiches online. I just got ham on a roll, so i was under the assumption this would be a couple slices of normal deli ham on a roll. I was wrong, as this does come with some kind of sauce and lettuce. The ham was also more of a country ham, in that it is a bit more dry and VERY salty. The mystery sauce seemed to add the saltiness, so I was unable to finish this sandwich. I will say though, I do not like salty foods at all. However, it is probably very tasty for normal people who do not despise salt like me. However the overall box was very cute, and everything else was delicious. I loved the cheese wafer, and the macaroni salad. I even enjoyed the deviled egg and I usually do not like them. The cupcake was very delicious. I got yellow cake with chocolate icing, YUM.
