A carb lovers dream! I came across Montana Gold Bread Co. after visiting The Oil store next door. They share a parking lot. The store maybe small, but they offer a lot. Upon entering we were impressed. There was a lot to chose from. They had loaves of bread, muffins, cookies, sandwiches and so much more. The cashier was so helpful. He answered all our questions, and gave us great advice. He was very knowledgeable about the products. We opted for a loaf of bread, a scrumptious peanut butter cookie and a bread pudding. We waited to get so many items. We already had lunch plans so we did not opt for a sandwich, but there were a few people there behind us ready to order sandwiches. I've passed by this little place at the beginning of Carytown a million times and never knew the goodness that was inside! They have fresh bread, rolls, cookies and more. A boxed lunch comes with a huge sandwich (whatever bread you want), chips/pasta salad/potato salad, and any dessert in the store. They also have free bread samples (often times an entire slice) with butter. They also have their own little parking lot so easy to run in, grab a loaf and head into Carytown. I decided to buy a loaf of the Blue Ridge Mountain Herb bread and I'm so glad I did. This bread is tasty enough to eat on its own, or even dipped in some tasty olive oil from the store next door. Two words: ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I love Montana Gold Bread Co. I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to visit this bakery. Their baked goods are so fresh and tasty. They use high quality ingredients here and everything is baked with love. It's a small shop, but there is a ample seating if you want to devour your treats or eat lunch. If you're lost on what bread to get, I highly recommend getting the Blue Ridge Mountain herb loaf. I could eat so much of this perfectly herbed wheat bread by itself. It makes any sandwich you want 10x better. If you want a sweet treat, their sugar chocolate chip cookie pack is the move. Crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside with a generous amount of chocolate chips. These cookies are divine. The cheddar garlic bread is amazing too with chunks of cheese inside. I also love how rich the pumpkin bread is. The loaf I love is about $7 and the cookie pack is about $6.50. It's so worth it and the bread can last a bit, plus the cookies are huge. They have a public restroom too. Besides the incredible goodies I got, my favorite part of my experience here was the baker who helped me. They answered all my questions about their products and told me they loved talking about bread. Don't wait as long as I did to check out this local gem. It's SOO GOOD. But it's awesome to visit this place to see the extensive menu of baked goods they have- from breads to cookies to buns. You can also get lunch here. Ducked in yesterday to pick up some king cakes if they were available. Three years ago I ordered and had some delivered to our son. Three years ago, the people I spoke with were lovely and kind. I went in and one was in their cooler. I asked how many were available as if they had more than 1, I would bring some home to our neighbors. The young lady at the counter rolled her eyes, acted like she was being bothered. I was told made to order only and in advance. I pointed to one in the case and no acknowledgment. I purchased cookies, which were fine. Oatmeal chocolate chip. I started to leave and turned back around and asked if I could order some king cakes. They asked for when. I said, "...any Tuesday, Thursday or Friday..." and I truly meant any of those days would be fine. The baker looked irritated and never said sure, he said, "...it's $100 order minimum for 'any' delivery..." Three years ago, they were happy to deliver. I tipped the young man who delivered, extremely well. The delivery was just a few miles from their store. At this point, I could have someone pick them up. Sometimes, I don't want to make bread at home and I am always looking for a baker at my standards. I highly recommend the Ukrainian Black Bread. It was divine. Wow, just wow. I've passed by this bakery plenty of times but it wasn't until I got a Groupon that I decided to take the plunge and try Montana Gold Bread Co, and boy am I glad I did. They offer a large variety of breads, pastries, cookies, etc. so it was a bit overwhelming as a first-timer but Jerry was so sweet and patient. He even offered us (very generous, mind you) samples of the challah bread and pound cake which were absolutely delicious. Consider us instantly converted. I am now a proud member of the Baker's Dozen Bread Club, which offers a free loaf of bread for every 12 loaves you buy. SANDWICHES - My boyfriend and I came here for lunch and got the ham and chicken salad sandwiches respectively. You can customize your sandwich with the bread, veggies, and cheese of your choice. We both got our sandwiches with the challah bread and wow. That bread was PHENOMENAL. It was the lightest and fluffiest bread I have ever had, like eating a soft, buttery cloud. I am so glad I found this place! I always pass by this place and never really took notice of it until the Groupon deal came up. Now that I've discovered them, I'm addicted! It's surprising how few reviews they have gotten on Yelp and I really hope more people will give this place a try. Upon entering, you are surrounded by all of their products and can see the huge kitchen with their employees making their fresh products in the back. They also have their huge cookies spread out on the counter which were really tempting. They have a large cutting board in the front with several products that you can sample. The pumpkin and blueberry pineapple loaves were absolutely delicious and those were enough to get me hooked on this place. The staff was really friendly and offered my boyfriend a second slice of the pumpkin bread after they saw how much he loved it! I also tried their roast beef sandwich with onions, lettuce, tomato, red bell peppers, and cucumbers on challah bread which was $5.49. The sandwich was a very generous size [pic uploaded] and satisfied even my boyfriend's ravenous appetite. The roast beef is the real deal, thickly sliced with a peppery crust, and the veggies were very fresh and crisp. For those who never had challah bread before, I would describe it as the best "white" bread ever. They give super thick slices of the bread and it is so dense but fluffy at the same time. It was great for all the fillings of the sandwich. I usually only like crispy, toasted sandwiches but this place really made me rethink things. The sandwich selection was pretty limited but I believe that this is to ensure that they put out the highest quality products possible. I wish they would also offer more bread options for their sandwiches. Currently, you can choose from honey wheat, hearty white, and challah. There is only a little patio out front so this is basically just a "to-go" place. Besides these, this place is a must-try! Delicious challah & why I was there but my experience proves there's still amazing people around. When leaving the store with my son, I threw the challah, my phone and keys in the front seat to buckle him into his car seat, closed the door and heard the car locks click in my 2004 car. Panicked, I ran around to the driver's side, which also wouldn't open. I ran inside to ask to use the phone, called my husband and ran outside. My husband arrived in about 10 minutes or i planned to break a window! While outside, the owner or head baker, came out, brought me a chair to sit in, another lady offered me water and although I refused, a minute later the gentleman came out with a cookie for my son for later and water for me. I just can't share enough how grateful I am for those exchanges and my husband showed up soon with the spare. Everything is good, we're home and in time to celebrate Shabbot. This place is a Richmond staple. I first got a loaf of their cinnamon swirl bread at a local farmers market. It was so delicious. Tastes homemade and looks perfect! I highly suggest trying it! I really liked that had their products at local farmers markets. Keepin' it local! One day I decided to go to their base location on Cary street. The product looked so delicious. The atmosphere felt like a bakery. They had a table set up for samples, you can try any of their products. I ordered a boxed lunch. I got the chicken salad on honey whole wheat. It was amazing. For my side, I got the pasta salad, it wasn't great but I don't really find a lot of establishments with great pasta salads. For my dessert, I got a cinnamon roll. It was incredible. If you like the cinnamon bread you'll love the roll. My only problem was that the people that ordered sandwiches after me all got served before me. They are pillowy and fragrant with just the right amount of chewiness. I will be making them my only stop for bread from now on. I have been eating a cinnamon swirl bread since I first came to Richmond almost 12 years ago and it is absolutely breathtaking. It tastes like a homemade cinnamon roll in a slice. The best part is when you get to that gooey gooey center of the loaf. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! I don't know what I was thinking not to procuring some of their other breads sooner. Maybe I was just blinded by the cinnamony goodness. But I'm branching out. I tried they are cherry challah in store. It was pillowy and buttery and I had to keep myself from buying a loaf right there on the spot. The staff is so sweet and accommodating and willing to answer any and all of your questions. The cinnamon buns are out of this world--particularly the loaded ones with nuts and icing. Their samples are nice and generous too cuz it's fun to try something new. My only complaint is there are no prices on the products. Furthermore, there are no dates on them either so you don't know when they were made. I didn't want to buy any of the packaged breads because 1) I didn't know how long they had been sitting on the shelf and 2) all the bread packages looked steamy inside and didn't want to get moldy bread. Walking in, you might feel like you've entered an oversized industrial kitchen (a la cupcake wars or top chef) rather than a sandwich joint. Well, truth be told, you have. The fact that I was able to choose challah pretty much sealed the deal before I even tasted the sandwich. The bread was fantastic, fluffy, perfect (no surprise there) and the sandwich was solid. I tried the pimento and cheese, which is a mixture of shredded cheddar, pimento, mustard, mayonnaise, and spices. Although not the most appealing to the eye, it was incredibly tasty. My addition of lettuce, cucumber, and onion, coupled with the challah and pimento and cheese, equated to a very large and hearty sandwich. I'd throw down $5.49 for a sandwich of this caliber any day. Oh, and of course I picked up a loaf of the cinnamon swirl while I was there... and tasted a sample while waiting for my sandwich. Did I mention this bread makes me want to profess my love for it while shouting from the rooftops? The Challah here is the best in town, hands down. Really, really good stuff. The prices are a little high, but appropriate considering the quality and the effort that goes in. Until today, I thought the staff was pretty nice, too. I come in every week, smile, say thanks, and buy my bread. Today, after I left, I heard both of the employees that were working loudly making fun of me and my motorcycle. Guess they forgot the side door was propped open, on such a nice day. i had been wanting to go here for awhile and boyfriend and i finally got a coupon for it and we went! we didn't try any of the sandwiches but what we did get was amazing. we got a loaf of the wheat bread, i really liked it but boyfriend didn't like it. i thought it was moist with a lot of flavor. boyfriend didn't like it cause he thought it was too moist, he said he didn't think they baked it all the way. we also got challah rolls and a big gooey chocolate cookie. the challah rolls were great. so soft and so flavorful. we were even able to sample some before we decided on it. the chocolate cookie was so good. it was big, gooey, and soft. i would with out a doubt go back there for the bread and cookies! read more

Yummy, yummy bread found here. My faves are the cinnamon swirl, which is like a brioche, and the challah which is amazing, it's super soft and sweet. Both make excellent french toasts and don't last very long at my place. The one disappointment is the sourdough, because its not really sourdough. If it tastes like french bread then it should be called french bread, not sourdough. Believe me, I'm from SF I know what sourdough should taste like. The only reason I'm ranting about sourdough is because its SO hard to find in Virginia and I actually went in here on a mission to find it. Since then Trader Joe's has opened and they supply me with all the sourdough I need. But I digress, so now back to Montana Gold. Another really nice thing is how they give you free slice samples of any bread you want to taste. The only problem is that you then end up wanting to buy way too much. read more

Good glory day, this place makes the most intense cinnamon swirl bread ever. I mean, so incredible that the cinnamon swirl is actually like a thick jam right inside the bread... cut it into thick slices, toast it up, put a little butter on it, and see if you can believe how awesome this bread is. It's a tall doughy loaf with just the right yeasty consistency, but light enough that it doesn't sit in your stomach like a stone... and then that moist fragrant swirl of cinnamon and sugar goes right through it... whew. Just writing about it is making me hungry. OK, now for the sad part... it's pricy. Like $4+ per loaf. I usually get it at Tom Leonards (though you can also go to their store on Cary Street) when I feel particularly riche.... Okay, I have lived near this place for over a year and always meant to stop by, but never did. Well I finally did and oh how I wish I went there sooner. The bread is YUM. We had company, so I bought the cinnamon swirl bread to make french toast and it was a TOTAL hit! We also bought some country white bread for BLTs; another great pick! The breads we purchased were excellent... BUT, You will become addicted to their Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. This type of cookie is featured at many bakeries and bread shops. However, the Montana Gold Oatmeal Raisin Cookie is the one to beat. Full quarter pound cookie, not too dry, not too soft. Individually wrapped, fresh and tasty. Great blend of ingredients in perfect balance. How much do I like them? I ordered 20 on my last request, ate one per day and still love them! Try a few. Bought $5 for $10 Groupons for here because I've heard many good things, and I was not disappointed! I'm patiently waiting for the next Groupon to come out so I can get some more! When you first come in you are pleasantly smacked in the face with the heavenly aroma of fresh loaves of bread and pastries, and there are samples of their breads on a cutting board in the front. Since my boyfriend and I came 20 minutes before closing they only had the cherry challah left, but boy was it delicious. They give you hefty slices for a sample too! And the butter on top just made it all the better. After oogling at all the goodies, I decided to order a roast beef sandwich on challah while my boyfriend opted for the chicken salad on challah. The sandwiches are made to order and were really fresh and tasty! A friend of mine told me that you can also put any of your sandwich choices on whatever specialty bread they have that day. I wish I had known that because there were a lot of delicious looking loaves laying in front! While we were waiting for the sandwiches to be made, we couldn't resist also picking up a pumpkin loaf with walnuts, a cinnamon roll with walnuts, and a snickerdoodle cookie. To be honest, the cookie was the reason I am not giving this place 5 stars. Most products are very good. The store is clean and the personnel friendly and helpful. If you are a fan of garlic (like me) you will enjoy the Garlic Knots. If you are a fan of garlic, you will likely be disappointed in the Cheddar Garlic served on Friday and Saturday. No garlic taste, and with good reason: Garlic is not even listed in the ingredients!
