Oh, another high-end boutique that I can't afford. Don't judge right away-ladies and gents, and that's what you are in here, try one on for size! Sure, many of the items are a fashion investment, but now I say, don't be afraid to shop around for quality. You don't have to look like a hobo to face the New England weather. You can actually look good in the cold!! The accessories are from local and semi-local artisans and cover different fashion decades. I recently treated myself to beautiful, understated, and thin, hushed purple-toned stone hoop earrings. Made with a supposedly rare Italian stone by a N.Y. artist. I love the brooches, the belts, the scarfs. I love the headbands, though headbands always end up hurting my big head? I love the feathery hair pieces that are so in right now, like they were in the 20s, I guess? Can I rock that without looking too showgirl? Though I have my punky edge, I'm not a girl who drools for spotlight. I just immediately feel like singing Ella Fitzgerald when I put it on. I am going to rediscover my inner hat, and also get my boy to discover his. He is convinced hats will cause early baldness! But the boy has his hair and needs to cover his precious ears. I wonder. I had thee most delightful time in this little shop. I passed the storefront a number of times with a friend who lives nearby. Neither of us were quite sure what it was; I figured random boutique. Every time, it happened to be late and closed. Finally one afternoon, breeze-blown and frumpy looking after a trip to the beach, we arrived during business hrs... ...to learn that Salmagundi is no random boutique, but a hat shop. Upon realizing this and being asked if we wanted assistance, I asked the woman working a question to which I have been dying to know the answer: How does one become a hat person? You know what, she did not look at me like I was crazy. She was Awesome. She took my measurement, confided in us the absurdity of the fact that most hats for women come in one size, assured us that their handmade hats came in different ones, and made lovely suggestions. I was so taken with the experience and the gorgeous hat she recommended that I threw down an unspeakable amount for it. Yes, the hats are expensive, but they're one of a kind skull-gold. The dude owner started telling me during checkout how his wife had found the striped fabric that comprises the bow on my new cloche hat was found and its entire story. Nervous about my new treasure, he assured me it was safe and that if it required reshaping or repair they'd do it for free. best staff ever. When I last visited Salmagundi, I had recently lived through the WORST retail experience of my life. This is including consideration of the selection & fitting of my prom dress. This experience happened at another hat shop on Newbury- and featured a salesman physically plopping a hat on my head- that I expressly didn't want to try on. It was traumatizing. Now, you may be thinking that ANY hat shop would look like a collection of heroic angels in comparison, and you aren't wrong- but yet again, Salmagundi made everything right in the world. From the second i walked in the door until i left, hat on head, they were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, super cool-looking in hats, and warm. Everything you would want in a haberdasher... I mean... they are dressing your head- staring at your face- judging the outcome and making suggestions... that is a pretty intimate experience. I cannot, cannot, cannot say enough about the staff here. So, I'll stop blathering on about them. The hat selection, itself, is very good and you are sure to be a one-of-a-kind, since they are small enough to remember to not repeat the same hats over and over. also, the staff is great. yay for Salmagundi, and yay for hats! read more

If anyone I know gets the cancer, this is the first place I am stopping, as they have the BEST array of hats ever. Dorian and I had a fun time browsing through the selection of fun accessories here, and I walked out with a really lovely pair of citrine and sterling earrings, that at $14 were a good deal. I wore them the next day, and got at least five compliments on how lovely they were. I love the selection of head bands, funky glasses, jewelry, adorable bags, and of course, the hats. I moved just around the corner from this hat store a few months ago, and finally stopped in to search for a reasonably priced hat to keep the sun off my face when prancing around town, etc. I basically said only the following: not too expensive, comfortable and some level of sun protection. The gentleman that helped me put hats on my head, which I responded to, until he found the perfect one for my needs - took maybe 6 or 7 minutes. While many of the hats i spied prior to being assisted cost well over $100, and presumably some much more, he only showed me lower priced options and mine cost $38. I will absolutely go back for more hats! In response to lots of the other comments, I suppose you could paint some of the staff with the hipster-brush, but if the outward appearance of the very knowledgeable and helpful people selling you things is that important, I guess you should keep looking for a hat shop elsewhere? read more

I bought a hat here about 8 months ago and every time I go in they remember me AND the hat! The store also makes everyone really happy. Strangers interact with each other and talk about hats and other things. Only problem is that the joy can be a bit tiring. Smiling that much hurts sometimes. Highly recommend for fun hat shopping! I finally made a visit this weekend and it was so busy! Happy to see that. There were three people working there--owners and another woman. They were all soo friendly and nice. Not pushy salespeople, just genuinely friendly. And that made me want to buy a hat! They sell a nice selection such as Goorin and Grace, fedoras (I'm not sure the brand), scarfs, wraps, gloves and other accessories. Also some special ed. Boston Red Sox hats and tshirts. Absolutely the best service. I am not a hat person, but I had a hat need -- an all-day lake party that was happening on the hottest day of the year. I have a tiny little head, and I wear glasses, so finding a hat that doesn't make me look like a hobbit, is extremely difficult, but somehow the staff at Salmagundi made it happen. They had lots of suggestions and excellent advice. I got a great straw sunhat that kept me safe from sunstroke and made me look totally unhobbit-like, and actually pretty great. All for $32. I was completely depressed when I went to Jasmine Sola and wanted a cute plaid hat that fit my huge ass massive head. I thought it would be super cheap since they were going out of business. I thought to myself "Jasmine, you suck...for once just let me find something cute for a good price." Alas...nope. With the % it was still $50. No way. Not for a Hat at jasmine Sola. Fast forwards a few weeks...still hatless. Visits to my SO's aunts in JP always are interesting....mainly because I had never been to JP before we started going out....Wait, once before I did...... to go to see Joey McIntyre sign autographs at the little peach when I was a small fry and in love with NKOTB. Anywhoo, I am always finding a new place and love checking out the area......our last trip was especially awesome....because.....it brought our asses here. What a cool store! Not only do they have amazing hats-but they fit my head! They have all different styles and materials.......as well as accessories galore. Cool bags, scarves, belts and gloves.....Nice antique-ish and unique looking jewelry (some made by local artist)...headbands...wallets....If it is considered an accessory..they'll have it. Not only is their accessory collection border on the trendy, funky, sophisticated and whimsical, but they have items for work, a night out on the town or just a Sunday brunch. I wish I lived closer! I have a big head, what can I say? I also have a lot of coarse, long, black Asian hair on my head which doesn't make hat wearing an easy task. But yet I so wanted to wear a hat when I was at Salmagundi. Good thing the owners understand that most people have big heads and tend to stock up on those sizes. Who knew there was a hat store in JP? In the course of a week, Salmagundi had come up multiple times in conversation so I knew I needed to check it out. I went on a "prospective" shopping trip to let me friend know whether she could find a "furry winter hat" and yes, they had serval, and I ended up walking out with a hat myself. The store had a great ambience, music that made you dance and staff that made you feel at ease. I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a hat (obviously), but also as a place to check out accessories like jewelry, scarves or belts. Their inventory changes regularly. read more

This little shop in little ol' (no) Jamaica Plain is booming with personality, literally. It's owned by a husband and wife duo. The wife creates almost all of the hats herself using vintage hat molds (so awesome!), and they have a lot of other dapper necessities: tie clips, cufflinks, pocket squares. The gentleman proceeded to try the hats on me, deciding which fit best and used words like "dipped" which made me hungry. I've never bought a hat. Never went to a hat store. Didn't know they existed. When you go here, you leave with a hat. That's just how it works. They delight you with their excellent sales presence, offer you champagne, tell you that everything looks great on you, impress you with their national hat collection rankings, and then you leave ready to audition for Newsies. The employees don't judge you for not being able to afford them. In fact, they give you free champagne, take you on a tour and let you try on the most gorgeous hats you will EVER see. Inside the store is their full service hat shop, where they can clean, resize, and revive your old hats. I thought this place was cool when it first opened. I got a few nice things there, a knit hat, some costume jewelry gifts for friends. When the store first opened the staff were very friendly. As time progressed and Salmagundi became more popular the staff became less friendly and more pretentious and as another reviewer stated stand offish. The last time I was in the store the owner was so unfriendly and stand offish that I decided that while you can find some nice things at Salmagundi (although you can find these nice things at other boutiques as well) I was no longer going to be supporting this business. I am so fucking excited about this hat store. Salmagundi was my first shopping experience being back in Boston. This is neither the time nor the place for me to talk about how incredible all of my shopping options were in countries like Italy and cities like Paris and Amsterdam, but, BUT Salmagundi was totally fantastic. The layout and design of the space is completely welcoming yet totally high class, the hats themselves are of superior quality, and it is definitely great for elitists to know that it is not as though they are carrying fifteen of the hat you are buying. I was there for the hats, but there were also cute scarves and accessory items. Also, I was very happy to be helped by genuinely friendly owners who gave good feedback. I hope this shop does extremely well. I hope more shops for different specialty items of this caliber open in Jamaica Plain. I hope you will get into hats and go give them business. Back in college, I worked in a hat shop in Faneuil Hall and sold all sorts of designer hats and accessories. Then I became a teacher and forgot all about my love of head adornments. until now... My bald headed companion and I went in because his dome piece gets cold and he's always looking for new stuff to keep warm in. Everyone who works there is super friendly and accommodating. Most of the stock is downstairs, so speak up and they will look...I was even inspired to find a headband/fascinator for a wedding I will attend in October. Had a great experience shopping for the man who has everything... and a large head. I purchased, last minute admittedly, a very attractive men's hat with my two fidgety young children in tow. The service was very attentive, perhaps a bit overly nervous.. (I did mention those pesky children in tow, right?). They had a great selection of things to choose from, fashionable accessories, umbrellas, shiny things... Everything was of the highest quality. They even wrapped my last minute gift with a jaunty red bow (+ $2 for the box). I'm sure they breathed a sigh of relief when I left but I would shop here again. I was having a hard time figuring out how a shop in JP stays open selling mega-expensive headwear. After a recent visit, I figured it out: the staff. These fun and flamboyant ladies and gents could sell anything. They will find you a hat that looks fabulous, make you try it on and compliment you to no end. I left with the one affordable thing I could find, some adorable earrings, but not before being told that I looked fantastically chic in them. They have an excellent selection of hats and other accessories including rings, necklaces, bracelets, hair clips, fascinators, scarves and sunglasses. I picked up a great pair of retro 70s style shades. They also have a limited selection of men's and women's clothing. When I first arrived at the store, they were experiencing a power outage, so they told me to come back and they'd give me 10% off my purchase. Excellent! This place is absurdly cool -- so absurdly cool that I signed up for Yelp to post this review. The shop owners (talented hatters and milliners themselves) are eminently knowledgeable about their trade, and the gentleman helping us out was infectiously enthusiastic -- we tried on dozens of hats over the course of an hour, well past the official closing time. This place is amazing. If you know you want a hat, a jacket, an accessory, etc., but aren't sure exactly what, the staff will find you exactly what you were looking for. They spend some extra time to work with you and will not stop until they have found something perfect. Of course it helps that every item in the store is pretty awesome. Despite the fact that my husband and I are both odd hat sizes, but we always leave happy. I think this store might be magical. Yet, no one is trying to talk you into something you don't really want. I absolutely love everything I have ever bought here. On a side note, I don't know why people keep saying this place is so expensive. Sure, they have high end stuff, but it is all part of a balanced range of price points that they offer. I think the owner is really sensitive to people wanting to be able to have unique, funky items without breaking the bank. Don't get me wrong, it is totally fun to splurge here occasionally, but I have some really great finds from this place that cost less than you would expect.
