Love. Like the song says "All you need is love..." And I love Ken. Which basically means that all I need in life is Ken. Because Ken does great hair. Sorry, let me rephrase that- Ken is MOTHER F-ING AWESOME at doing hair. I first went to him last October to fix my terribly flat and terribly misbehaving hair. My hair is....schizophrenic would be the best and most favored term. It does the whole "I can't decide between being straight, curly, or wavy" thing. Which means that every morning I usually do the whole "Bitch I'm bunning you" thing. (Bunning=Putting hair in a bun. It also sounds like some sort of sexual perversion.) Ken fixed it. He trimmed it, layered it, did some Ken Magic and everything was wonderful. I held off on reviewing until Haircut # 2. And I'm actually really glad I did. Because if I thought Haircut # 1 was awesome, Haircut # 2 was PURE GENIUS. I decided on a Tuesday that I was sick of my nasty frizz mop for good so I called Ken and booked an appointment for the next day. Walked into the salon, told him I was "Chopping this shit off" and that he could do what he wanted. Which he did (although not without discussing it with me first to make sure I was down). Any man that can make my hair look this FABULOUS deserves...I don't know...a special place in heaven or a mansion in Miami. Or something. He made suggestions, took charge, made sure I was OKAY with the suggestions, took charge some more and a few (okay many) snippity snips later I walked out of the salon feeling like a Sex Goddess (minus the ability to orgasm on command). On the train ride home men kept staring at me (okay it was one man in an empty train car but he was pretty cute albeit a little on the young side). I haven't felt this stunningly fabulous in years and three weeks later I am STILL loving the sex that is my hair. So basically Ken=Love. And we could all use a little more of that. read more

I have followed my stylist Fred around for the past two years. Finally, he has a home that I think we both can feel comfortable in. :) Salon 10 has a great atmosphere with simple decor, dark shabby chic furniture, and calm yellow walls. This 2nd floor studio has a relaxing vibe without the obnoxious attitude. The owner, Jennifer, was very cool and gives me the impression that she will remember me the next time I come in, which gives me that warm small town sort of feeling. The shampoo session was amazing which included the most relaxing head massage that I can't even tell you how much I needed after a long day. A Women's cut is $45 and they offer waxing, massages, and facials. Fred, let me tell you about Fred. Fred is wonderful. Part of me doesn't even want to tell you about him. I trust him so much with my hair, that I barely have to explain what I want. He just knows what my random half-wavy coarse hair needs and he takes a lot of time to get it right. Man, did I get lucky. I've been straightening my (very thick, unruly, coarse, curly) hair for years, and I finally decided to start embracing my curl. Accordingly, I needed a new haircut that would allow me to do this. I found Salon 10 through Yelp and luckily got an appointment with Ken, who has tons of raves here. Ken has raves for a reason. He's easy to talk to, knows what he's doing, and isn't snooty at all, which is a consistent problem I've had with Chicago salons. I have problem hair, and I'm really touchy about my haircuts. Even though my hair was straight when I came in, Ken was still able to figure out its totally crazy curl pattern once it was washed. He explained everything he was doing and took his time telling me how to style my new curly mane. He didn't push product on me, which was really, really nice. Add to this the extremely reasonable price ($45, can't beat it) and the shampoo and relaxing head massage, as well as the friendly receptionist, and I'll definitely be back. Everything you've heard or read is true. Ken is fantastic! I had been seeking a new stylist for, well, years. And I believe I've finally found my match. I made a Friday afternoon appointment last minute (hooray!) and hurried into Salon 10 to fix up my bedraggled mane. Ken was immediately so gracious, even after I pointedly apologized for sweating profusely on my jog over to the salon. He pulled his fingers through my hair and checked out the sitch. Now, here's the thing: I have long and straight hair. It's too easy for me to end up at a salon where a few snips just take off dead ends, but there's no magic. I walk out of many salons having dropped lotsa bucks for little-to-no effort. I explained to Ken that I wanted to keep my basic look--long and straight--but somehow add some oomph. More layers, he suggested. After a quick lather and rinse by another employee, Ken was at work, taking his time with my hair while making me feel completely comfortable and confident. I even learned that Ken has been cutting hair since age 12 when the neighborhood kids would turn to him for 5 buck cuts. The man found his calling early in life, and it shows. It is so reassuring to sit in the chair of a stylist who you know cares about what he's doing and will do it really well. I left the salon completely thrilled with my cut. Ken's work on my layers lightened my step up, and I've felt more confident in my look since. My only itsy-bitsy complaint would be that during my shampoo, there was no towel underneath my neck so the sink painfully dug into the top of my spine, and I wasn't given any robe, so my clothes got a bit splashed. I suppose I could have asked for a change while it was happening, and it was not enough of a problem to make me dock any stars. This place was amazing!!! I actually found it on here and decided to try it out because they had such stellar reviews! I'm very particular about who does my hair, and have been going to the same girl for five years. When it came time to find a new salon, I did my homework. I finally decided to go to Salon 10 because it was near my house, and they had nothing but great reviews. Not to mention the haircut was only $45!!!!!! I didn't have any problem making an appointment, and when I walked in I was greeted with hot tea and a magazine. The atmosphere is great! It's cozy and small, with only a few stylists, which makes it that much more personal. Ken was amaaaaaaaaazing! He gave me five star treatment, and he was super friendly and easy to talk to (which is good when you're sitting in a chair for several hours). I explained to him what I wanted to do with my hair, and he met my expectations and then some! He did things to my style that I wasn't even able to communicate! He just knew. I've been dying to review Salon 10 and Fred, since I got my first cut with him back in September, but wanted to wait until I'd visited at least twice. The fact that I was able to go 3.5 months without a trim for my short hair should tell you something. Dude is good. Fred is meticulous, without taking forever, and is great for not trying to talk you into styles you aren't comfortable with, or sell you on products. He's super nice and funny, but won't try to talk your ear off if you're not feeling it. He'll readily show you how to do certain things with your hair if you ask, and he's not one to judge if you tell him you want something low maintenance. And to confirm that I'm not irrationally in awe of super Fred, he gave my sister a cut recently, and she's now in love, too. So glad to have found this place, I'm now a devotee. read more

I have lived in Chicago for 5 years and, until today, had not found somewhere to get my hair cut that I liked and could afford. I've reached the end of my quest with Salon 10 and Ken. The atmosphere put me at ease right away with comfy chairs and nice simple decor that reminded me of a beach house. All the staff members were friendly and helpful. I biked there so was a bit out of breath and I was immediately given a glass of cold water. Not only was it just what I needed, but I they won points with me by not using disposable cups. I hate it when I go to get my hair cut and they rush through the shampoo, but here I got a nice scalp massage that almost put me to sleep! I never leave reviews this quickly after service but honestly I feel robbed. I was quoted $30-$35 for a blow out. I explained to the receptionist I had extensions that were down to the middle of my back. After telling the stylist I wanted waves (that I know can easily be created by a round brush) he led me to believe curling my hair with a curling iron would be best. Extra $15. Fine. Seriously I've never seen such horrible, hard brushes used by stylists anywhere!! Bristles literally ripped out my natural hair! The hair products and iron were from a different generation. I believe this salon could be great for other treatments, but a blowout, no thanks. My total for a blowout and style was $70!!!!! Though I live in Wicker Park, I really am not quite fashion forward enough for their hair salons. After trying a place and walking out business in the front and party in the back, I knew I had to go somewhere a little more laid back. So after my hair grew out, I yelped "Wavy hair" and open on Sundays I came across Salon 10. I have seen Vicky at Salon 10 a couple of times and have not ever left disappointed. I have thick wavy hair and usually have to intro my hair to a stylist. You know the usuals, "Please don't give me a mullet", "Please don't make me look like triangle-head", etc. She sat me down and looked at my hair dry before she washed and cut it. Vicky definitely took her time and gave me a cut that even grew out well! In my opinion, the service here really does set it apart. I feel relaxed and never pressured to make idle conversation. The only downfall is how far the salon is for me. Darn you Andersonville for having some of that best brunch spots and Salon 10! read more

Had a great experience with Vicky at Salon 10. She really listened to what I wanted and worked with my hair texture (coarse and thick). She gave me a great layered, shoulder-length shag with long bangs. She was extra-careful about the cut itself, blowing my hair dry to check the shape and making some adjustments as needed. I really appreciated how she communicated with me throughout the cutting process, letting me know what she was doing and reassuring me that I wasn't losing any length, just gaining shape and texture from what she was doing. She also complimented my DIY color job! The receptionist/shampoo girl was also very friendly and professional. My only (tiny) complaint was that the music was a little loud for such a small space--I had trouble hearing the stylist sometimes. Maybe turn the radio down a notch? I really can't say enough good things about this place. I have been going to Salon 10 for a few years and have never been disappointed. I live in Andersonville and, of course, love to support any local business. However, Jennifer and the gang make it SO easy. From the receptionists to the stylists, they just couldn't be nicer. When you walk in, they'll take your coat and offer you a drink. You can get a cut by Fred, Ken or Jennifer (the owner). Jennifer is my gal, but I've heard wonderful things about all 3 of them. You know the kind of hair salons you see in the movies where they remember your name and where the stylists are great conversationalists? This is that place! I actually look forward to getting my hair cut and highlighted. Not to mention, I get TONS of compliments on my hair all the time. Oh, and you just wait for the shampoo. You'll get the best head massage you've EVER had. The only problem with this place is trying not to fall asleep from being too relaxed. I went in here on my way home one day and decided on a whim to get bangs (I've done this before). I said I'd like thick, long bangs that curve at the cheeckbones, and left with straight, short, thin bangs. I went to my regular stylist days later and he fixed them for free...that'll teach me to ever cheat on my normal guy. I'm just speaking on one experience, and I will say that the people were very nice and accomodating offering to take my jacket and offered a selection of beverages. I had a great hair wash - the head massage was just what I needed after a long week, then Ken gave me exactly the kind of cut I asked for - taking some length off, plus some layering. I was lucky enough to get my first appointment with Jennifer, and have been going to her ever since. She really listens, and lets you know what will (or won't) work. My hair isn't easy to work with: it's thick & frizzy with a slight wave, and there's tons of it. She manages to not only give me a great cut & blow out, but she's fantastic with color. She always gave me just the right amount & shade of pale blonde highlights. Last weekend I needed a change and went dark. When I decided to get my first real haircut in several years it was a major commitment that called for careful research! Having just recently moved to Andersonville I decided to explore my options locally in the hopes of finding a go-to neighborhood stylist. I think I've found him in Ted at Salon 10! I came in on a lazy Sunday and was lucky to have the place to myself :) The receptionist/shampoo girl was lovely (and gave a great head/neck massage). The atmosphere of the salon itself is relaxed and homey- I'm not a fan of the more uptight, sterile feel of more "posh" places. Ted was friendly and an easy conversationalist without pushing it when I had my moments of silence during the hour-long procedure. He also shared some great tips about places to eat around the neighborhood. I loved how invested he was in supporting the local community. I let go of about 9+ inches for an angled cut that stops just below my shoulders. Ted was meticulous, and took the time to give me a great blowdry (which is quite a feat with my thick hair). I seriously anticipated that I might leave the salon in tears (it's always sad to say goodbye), but I walked out feeling fabulous! It's been a month. Am I a fan of short hair? Ehhh...still adjusting. A few weeks ago I purchased a Groupon to a salon that shall remain nameless and received one of the worst haircuts of my life. The woman actually burned a chunk of my hair right off! So, after way too many frustrating bad hair days waiting for it to grow out (and looking like one of the little rascals in the meantime), I finally gave in and called Salon10 yesterday afternoon. They were nice enough to fit me in at the last minute for an appointment with Ted. The whole experience was wonderful. Everyone who works here was so friendly and helpful, including Ted. He listened to what I wanted and made me feel right at ease. This was my second stop on the Great Hairstylist Hunt. I immediately liked the serene atmosphere and wood-tone decor. It feels like a quiet little getaway - right above a busy street! I really enjoyed having my hair washed here - they have a dedicated person doing it who also gives you a scalp massage. Mmmm, luxury. Ted cut my hair a couple of different times and did a very nice job; ultimately, the chemistry didn't *quite* click, but he definitely gets the runner-up spot. The real standout experience, though, was when I went in for a massage. Kristina fit me in on the spur of the moment, and turned out to be incredibly skilled. Her technique was interesting - not super-deep like some therapists I've been to, and in fact I at first thought she wasn't having much of an effect at all. Then I tried moving my neck and shoulders after she'd worked on them, and my range of motion had increased by 40%. I don't even have words for how much better I felt after she was done. Good place for hair, *great* place for a massage. One of these days I may get brave and try a facial, too. And the best part - they're all $50! My regular stylist moved away and I have been salon hopping for a while! She knew how I liked my hair, would often do fun colors on me, and I trusted her implicitly. When she was gone I went around and tried out a lot of salons but never found a new stylist for me. The wait is over thanks to Salon 10 and CALEB. He is new to Chicago and is fantastic. I made an appointment and it was fantastic! Perfect haircut and he cared enough to take the time to ensure everything laid right and looked great - i don't even need to style it in the morning because he cut it perfectly. Sometimes guys haircuts take 5 minutes and they use buzzers and boom done - not with Caleb. Also he is funny and sweet. The owner of the salon is great as well. The place is gorgeous and right in the heart of Andersonville. Book with Caleb - you won't be disappointed - he's now done my hair 5 times! read more

I should start by admitting that I rarely have my hair cut. Usually its an annual event, so I appreciate a haircut that looks good at the beginning, and continues to look good while it grows out. Last summer, after listening to much complaining about the state of my hair, my boyfriend bought me a haircut for my birthday - at any place I wanted to go. I looked on Yelp (it usually sends me in the right direction) and found this place, and two hours later I was sat in the chair while Don fixed the mess on my head. Can I write a review for Don, and give him 5 stars?? He was awesome. Even my boyfriend was impressed (and he's the kind of boyfriend who takes two weeks to notice that I dyed my hair a completely different color). It was possibly the best haircut I've ever had. So a year later, when it was time for my annual haircut, I naturally thought of this place again. This time, unfortunately, Don wasn't working on the day I went in. I had a pretty clear idea of the haircut I wanted, but the hairdresser who looked after me talked me out of it. I'm all for being talked out of a haircut - seriously, if someone who does this every day has a better idea, I'm all for it. Unfortunately the idea was not better than mine. Last time I had that haircut, I was nine. And my mother did it. I was not a happy camper. At all. (This, alone, is the reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars) Since I didn't have the time, or money (its a little more than I would usually pay), to go back and get it fixed, I waited for it to grow out. After two months or so it still wasn't any better, so I called and checked Don was working, and, since he was, I sucked it up and booked another appointment. What can I say? I will be going back to Don for my annual haircut next year. My hair looks great!! And Don was, once again, lovely. He gave me all sorts of good advice (both times) about how to look after my hair, and how to style it. Overall, this place is good, its just a shame that (in my experience) its so hit or miss. I have been going to Salon 10 for several years, and have mostly had good experiences. Jennifer (the owner) knows a lot about color, and I'm very happy about how she figured out the best match for my non-gray hair that looks really good on me. She is also very pleasant and genuine. However, cutting hair is not her strong suit, as she will tell you too. I had my hair cut by her, and it was just OK. Good thing I only need a basic cut. The amazing Ken (who is praised in lots of other comments) was fantastic with my hair too, and it's a real shame that he left. A couple of years ago I had a cut by another stylist, but she was not interested in hearing what I wanted, because even though I was specific, she did things that I really didn't like. She also said she didn't "really like people," and she seems to be gone now. (Is there a lot of turnover? I'm not sure...) Ted cut my hair recently and he did a very nice job. Jennifer also took a little time to show him the color concoction and application she used with me. Ted is a sweet guy and when I said I wanted a "no-frills" cut of a certain length, he did that without doing extra undesirable poofy-ness. The younger women who are the receptionists/hair washers are really friendly and do a great job (including head massage!). I like the low-key, quiet atmosphere. Readers should know that there is a very long flight of stairs to climb to the salon. The entrance is hard to find off the street, too-- you have to go in another store to get to the stairs. read more

I just fell in love with this little place! I am pretty phobic about getting my hair cut and haven't found someone I've been comfortable with since I got to Chicago a year ago. That all changed today. Fred was charming, respectful and super talented. He went to town and I walked out a new person less than an hour later. The shampoo and scalp massage?Cherry. Sundae. You get it. The price ($45) was more than reasonable to feel pampered and taken care of. I love love love my new haircut and was so thrilled to have a positive experience right out of the gate. It's also easy to make a little day of it because of all the other fun stuff to do in A'ville. Got a delicious Svea breakfast beforehand and an $8 pair of jeans at Brown Elephant afterwards. I'd been reluctant to find a new stylist, treasuring the memory of going to Sana when I lived in DC, but at long last the split ends got to be a bit much, and I took a chance on Salon 10 in light of its nearness to my home and because of the reviews of my fellow Yelpers. As a matter of fortune, I drew Ken, and I couldn't be happier. He was careful, attentive, a light touch, and fun to talk to. I couldn't help but feel delighted by the results--I walked out with a head full of long, loose curls that definitely had me feeling better set for the summer's heat. Had a very excellent experience at Salon 10 getting a cut. Though I didn't book Ken, whom everyone has raved about, I was very happy with Vicky. She listened to my "wants" and interpreted them into haircut language. She really took her time making sure everything was even and fresh looking. I haven't been happy with a haircut in a long time, and this one was great. I'm def going back to get highlights as Vicky promised she can do mine in an hour rather than the 3 hour hell I normally sit through. I've been getting my hair cut - and more recently colored - at Salon 10 for I think three decades, and started taking my teen a few years ago. Jennifer always, ALWAYS does a great job, always makes me feel not simply like a valued customer, but a good person. There's always tea, and cookies at Christmas time. The salon is very clean. Why 4 stars you ask? Location, location, LOCATION! Don't get me wrong, its not that Salon 10 is in a bad area, not at all. Its that the salon is located upstairs from a separate retail store. You have to walk in the store, then go up the stairs to the salon. Not brain surgery, but not totally clear either. Aside from that... The salon itself is lovely. Cozy, comfy, and calming. :) The shampoo girl gave me an incredible scalp massage. Normally, I don't care for such things, but wasn't sure how to say so without seeming rude, so I let her do her thing. Glad I did! I went in that day for a simple cut, nothing fancy. Got set up with Ken, which turned out to be serendipitous! After a slew of disappointing cuts & colors in my personal 'hair history', I've learned to keep my expectations at a medium level the first time I see a new stylist. There was no need for such caution with Ken. I walked in there hoping (at the very least) that I wouldn't walk out crying. Fast forward an hour or so, & I walked out of that salon feeling like a DIVA! Simple cut? Yep. But, as it turned out, even a simple cut, when well done, can make a big difference. I vowed then & there Ken was my stylist from then on. Period. However, when I logged in to write my review, I noticed another reviewer had mentioned Ken had left, and is now at T Salon. So, nothing against Salon 10, but I will be seeking Ken out at his new location. I mean, finding a good stylist is kinda like finding a good man...hard to do. Honestly, this decision has nothing to do with Salon 10 itself. It is a great place (once you realize its up the stairs), and they do have a massage special that's only $50 for one whole hour. Not a bad deal! All in all, I can easily recommend this salon. I may still go there for other services, but I will definitely go looking for Ken for hair related issues. read more

Fantastic place. Fred is great! I usually just let him do what he thinks would look best and it has always looked fantastic. Fred pays attention to detail and never rushes, but doesn't take forever. Even when he's backed up he does rush you out. The price is good for the quality of cut. Everyone there is really nice and the space itself is cute. The shampoo girl is great too. No matter who cuts your hair you will probably love it. read more

I've had my hair cut and highlighted/colored twice with Ken. He was great! Both times with him were seriously the only times that I didn't feel like crying after getting my hair done. It was perfect both times and he has great instincts so I don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing and ending up with a messed up do. I'm so excited to have a regular stylist.
