I had very long thick hair that passed my bottom. I'm 5'll so my hair was long long. I asked to keep as much of the length as possible but to layer it out and style. I was told bc she had another appt an hour after mine & the amount of hair i had she can't get it done in time. That was fine, I just style it myself when i get home no problem. She was very kind customer service was no issue but when i tell you she butchered my hair... She BUTCHERED my hair bad. The layers were uneven I had middle layers that were as long as bottom layers. My hair length is at my shoulders now which is what i'm mostly upset about. I honestly felt like she had never done my kinda hair before so i was nervous about getting the hair cut in the first place and she literally made the worst outcome possible. When the year is as bad as 2020, what can possibly be worse? As in, "Would my year be any worse, if I picked a new Asian hairstylist (in Tucson, of all places) for my unruly and unhappy hair from some random Yelp reviews and had her cut and color my hair?" My hair was a mess. My previous color was transforming into a hue that is reminiscent of the Great Dumpster Fire of 2020, while also suffering from the effects of the hard Tucson water. Esther, the owner of Salon 520, spent about the first 5+ minutes brushing out the tangles in my hair (that's how bad it was), then we discussed what color and style I wanted. I didn't bring any pictures, realizing now, after many decades - that the gorgeous pixie cut on Halle Berry and the cascade of beautifully-coiffed curls that Sandra Oh sports can only be maintained with an entourage of hair stylists and unlimited time and resources. Esther seemed to know exactly what I was looking for in terms of color and style. The hair coloring products she used worked quickly (some Italian quick-coloring formula, she said), without heat, and very little smell. She cut just enough hair off to lighten the weight of the hair and to give it enough volume. She was very careful to explain what she was going to do and what products she was using throughout the 2.5 hours I was with her. We also talked for most of the time, so the hours passed quickly. While the color at first appeared darker than natural, I rather liked the Goth look, and now -several weeks later, the red highlights are coming through.. Esther's salon is spacious and high-ceilinged. She has a strict protocol for Covid (ie. Masks only, hand sanitizer, dirty/clean pens) and will even provide you with a disposable mask, so that you don't mess up the one you're wearing while she's washing/coloring your hair. Esther is recently from California and has worked with Asian, as well as non-Asian hair. The products she uses are quality and her experience comes through with her technique and confidence in styling hair. I feel that her pricing is reasonable for her skill and experience level. In Tucson, it's easy to pay wayy more for a cut and style that is wayy less than what I'd imagined. I am SO HAPPY that (1) there was finally something to be happy about in 2020; and, (2) my hair grows quickly, so I'll be back to see her again in 2021! read more

I found Salon 520 on Google. I read all the reviews, starting with the lowest reviews. I decided to give this place a try. I haven't had my hair cut in over a year and I usually start hacking at my own hair because of the bad experiences that I have had and I figure I could do just as bad as a hairstylist and have only myself to blame. Anyway, I had Nicole as my stylist. Nicole is wonderful! I wanted a deep conditioning treatment and a hair cut. The deep conditioning made my hair feel super soft. When it came to the haircut, Nicole did a fantastic job. Most often people cut off way more than I want but Nicole cut off less than what I thought would have to come off. The cut is very nice and exactly what I wanted A blunt, straight cut with some face framing. Nicole wasn't rushing or telling me what I wanted. I scheduled for a color next week. I trust this stylist. You can't always let the bad reviews cloud your judgement. Every business has bad reviews as everyone has bad days. I highly recommend this salon. Nice atmosphere. Went on a Saturday. Made a reservation that day. Was greeted politely and promptly. Covid precautions were taken, my daughter and I highly appreciated that. The salon is beautiful inside. Very clean. Minor wait time but, was approached by hair dresser and given an estimated time and an apology, which we found very considerate. There are refreshments and comfortable seating. My daughter received a drop dead gorgeous haircut from Blue. I had confessed how I hacked off my daughters bangs and Blue was able to fix them 100%. My daughter and I were also talked out of the particular haircut at other salons in the past. So I was impressed to see Blue take on the cut with out question. Simply nailed it. She's definitely a hair artist. I did watch a few people get their hair done while I was waiting and from what I observed all the hair dressers that day seemed to do really nice work. I'll definitely be returning and would recommend this salon. read more

I had thermal reconditioning done here twice, and I wish I had not done either but especially the second time, when I sustained severe damage due to Esther's inexperience. I only went back to her (even though the first time I felt there was some damage) it because my regular thermal gal left Tucson and I couldn't find another (it's hard to find this in Tucson and I didn't want to go to Phoenix, so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Esther did a perfectly decent job on my color, so i can't say that's not OK to do that with her, but I do NOT recommend her for thermal reconditioning (Japanese straightening). She is not experienced enough and caused damage to my hair. I wish I had grilled her more about her experience. She committed the cardinal sin of thermal reconditioning by letting the solution get too close to the scalp, which causes L-shaped bends at the scalp. This can happen if you apply too close or let the heat of your scalp melt the solution too close. I'm not even a stylist and I know about it, you can read about even as a layperson. Everyone knows you MUST NOT do this tule #1. She let it happen and as a result i ended up with a sensation of "stubble' at the part which grew out to "bends" where the hair eventually broke. Wors,e when I reached to her about it , and told her my regular color gal )who I've seen for years) saw the stubble and bend, she blamed the color/colorist for the damage (color can't do this to your hair! Plus she saw it BEFORE she did anything to my hair, and she was horrified.) She agreed the look at what she had done, then she cancelled and said she was sick and never got back in touch. By rights she should have refunded me at least part of my $340 (ironically she charged more than the person who had been doing it who had 20 years experience and always did it perfectly). Esther does not have the experience. She also washed the left and right sides separately, it was really weird, she did not time it well. Please save your hair and do not trust Esther for thermal reconditioning. I've been gettin this service for 16 years form probably 7 different stylists in three cities and i'v never had someone do the "too close to the scalp" thing. read more

So I moved here around last year, and I haven't been able to find a good enough salon to cut my hair. I'm SUPER glad that I took the courage to call in and ask if Esther could do my hair. I started with dark brown hair. I asked for blonde balayage to give my hair a little step up before I start at a new school and meet a bunch of people. You know when you see hairdressers or any other service providers assessing their job, realizing OH NO they screwed up and then they try to tell you very enthusiastically how good it looks? That's what happened. I asked for a color job that would look good with my natural hair but also straightened. DAY 1- (cheetah shirt) I knew the dye job was shit but I paid anyways amidst tears because I felt bad. She did her best right? And the color of my hair, the ORANGE color of my hair was my fault? Not to mention the blonde in the very top is not even supposed to be there. There's giant chunks on one side like it's 2002 and then super thin streaks on the other. it is not blended AT ALL. CHUNKY AF. NO SHAPE. JUST BLOCK OF BLONDE, BLOCK OF DARK. NO BLEND. I googled bad balayage and pictures similar to my hair popped up. It should NOT look like this all over. It looks like I asked my 6 year old sister to take a bottle of bleach to my head bc I thought I could do balayage on my own. IT'S ORANGE!!!! HOW CAN YOU EVEN SAY THAT IT LOOKS EVEN OKAY? I'm embarrassed to leave my house or even be seen by my family members. My dad is also pissed bc it cost so much money and looks like total shit. Next day- (purple tshirt) I want it fixed (not further balayage bc it's clear that's not happening at this salon unless Esther does it from what I've heard) back to plain brown or something less fugly AND I want at least a partial refund because this is not a $170 job. And that's what I ended up with. She still tried to say it looked good. It looked better and good. It was fixed. So I got up mid blow dry because I was about to cry and spoke to Esther and received a partial refund. That's where the one star is coming from. They were kind but also still trying to sell me on this SUPER SHITTY hair color job. To be fair, all the reviews on here were for Esther. But if a hair stylist can not achieve (EVEN CLOSE) to the picture they show you, they should communicate that and be honest and have some freaking integrity and discuss options. Not shoot for the best and then try to sell off shit work as good work. Maybe my stylist was blind, idk. But anyone who thinks that hair looks good and professionally done is a wackadoodle. Here's to me deciding whether I should have my 2007 Britney moment or what my partial refund of wasted fucking time can get me from Sally's. Thank god I have experience dyeing my own hair. I asked for my hair to be refreshed. I had brown hair with some caramel highlights and just asked for my hair to be a little more blended and some blonde balayage to be added. I have attached a picture of the hair I asked for below and what I have now. My hair was in great condition, and now after my first shower and a hair mask, my hair is frizzy and burnt. I am not happy with what I was given and can not understand how I asked for brown hair and received bleach blonde. I will not be going back to this salon. read more

Erica gets ten of five stars. She knows what she is doing and she is very professional. Erica is the reason that I stayed when I learned that everyone was required to wear a mask. Where is the science? Viruses can penetrate the masks. No matter how much I like Erica's work I was only able to stay and don the mask because I had not worn one for a few months and my body had been able to recover from the adverse effects that I got while being masked. I understand that there are people who have not had the vaccine, and there are others who are at high risk. If they choose to wear a mask that's great. Me wearing a mask too does not further their protection. However, being a responsible and educated adult I should have the freedom to choose whether or not I want to wear a mask. Free people take calculated risks. Some members of the population worked hard to maintain a robust immune system to avoid COVID 19. There is ample evidence of masks causing harm and even death to people who wear them. If the current mask policy is still in effect when my hair needs attention again, I have decided that I will not go to Salon 520 Beauty Lab. I have suffered because of masks. I had been growing my hair out for a while and stated this to the stylist many times, I asked her to take an inch off the top, and bring down the sides, she looked confused and annoyed and asked for a picture.
