I originally started at the West Broadway location that closed post pandemic then went to the Yorkville location which also recently closed. I booked my appointment with Randy who started cutting my hair when my previous stylist left the Yorkville location. Here's the final "cut": Location: B, C train to 72nd CPW, 4 minute walk to salon Service: Friendly greet and check in. I always ask for Aveda's soothing tea. Space: 2 level salon, very spacious. In fact, as I waited for my highlights to set in, I was escorted to a private room with comfy chair and table. Extremely bright, airy space and combined elegance with comfort. Hairdresser: This is my second visit with Randy. He is professional, very personable and an excellent stylist. Highly recommend! A very positive experience. My experience at Scott J Aveda Salon was bad from start to finish, and even the escalated complaint was bad. I came for a dusting and single process color. My stylist couldn't have been more unfriendly and attached to her phone. She didn't want to look at the photo I brought and flat out told me she had no idea what I was talking about and proceeded to take half an inch off my hair when I specifically told her I was trying to grow it and to only DUST the ends. Most stylists know that a "dusting" is less than an inch, and if this stylist didn't know, even though I told her, she should have asked me again. The color burned my scalp and smelled far worse than any color I've ever had. Even the shampoo assistant said the smell was awful. The manager on duty was nice and gave me a bit of a discount on the color and removed the charge for the cut that I stopped after the first over-zealous snip, but the manager the following day only wanted to tell me how great the stylist I had is and just wasted more of my time. This is Manhattan's version of Super Cuts and you get what you pay for, which isn't much, even if it's over 200 bucks. EDIT: NICOLE IS A LIAR. I EMAILED HER SEVERAL TIMES AND CALLED AND TEXTED AND SHE HAS NOT RESPONDED. HER RESPONSE HERE IS JUST FOR SHOW. read more

This was my first time at the salon. Very polite and friendly check in staff. My appt was with Valbona, and she was on-time. She gave me a great haircut and blowdry- it may have been a bit shorter than Id like but it fell into place (as it usually does) in 2 wks. I made a drawing as a visual guide of what I wanted because I was a new client and I'm very particular. This was hard to take in the right angle holding 2 devices by myself, but trust me, it came out EXACTLY as I drew it. Oxana is a genius. Also, this was the first time a salon asked me if I wanted my conditioner all over or just the ends. Usually I have to sit in quiet horror while conditioner is lathered onto and massaged into my scalp and face. This time I actually enjoyed getting my hair washed by someone else. read more

Went to this location a couple of months ago to get a haircut with Romeo. I hadn't been there for a year. He colored my hair previously a while back and liked the color. Scheduled a cut with him and he ruined my hair. I had grown it out it was healthy and full. He cuts my hair blows it out. When he's finished styling I'm looking at it and to be honest I wasn't impressed. Then he goes in and started cutting in to my hair out of nowhere. But wasn't combing or separating the hair he was giving it a rough chop and I saw long pieces of hair on the floor. Mind you I have very curly hair. It looks uneven and doesn't have a nice shape. I'm very disappointed to say the least. When we go to an establishment and spend money for a service you expect to look better than before not worse. Aveda is over priced and lacks customer service. After having a consultation and even having a picture from the master how she sees me where was nice mix of brown and blind colours creating a stylish balayage, I got this after totally making my back wet through hoodie ( I am pregnant by the way and it's pretty cold outside ), not even drying my hair enough they just let me go to pay. When I got home and dried my hair properly I saw what exactly I received in the behind not mentioning that it had nothing in common in what I explains what was shown on a picture before. Never again. Love this salon! They're great with scheduling, asking the right questions over the phone and helping you out with the many questions you might have. I've had service from different stylists- from master to the regular stylist- all are wonderful. Kenya is so knowledgeable with color and cut, (approaches it scientifically and tries to match your requests)- She seems to always get it right, topping it off with great blow-outs. Went to get my hair colored single process. I was told I will be seen by their most advanced colorist Jessica. I am very unhappy with the results. After being left waiting for ever without her even coming to check the process and advancement. Her assistant came in took me to wash sat me down without even blow drying my hair. I used to come to the Aveda salón years ago, I've had beautiful work done there, gorgeous color when I wanted it. My latest visit was not so much the same experience, all the ladies at the front were all helpful and sweet. I went in wanting some framing low lights- I ended up leaving with a whole head of brassy blond- still showing all my grey hairs under the brass- not even close to the photo I showed (from the last time I had color done there). My colors were still in the system and they weren't used as a guideline- to my surprise she costed my whole head in tinfoil, washed it toned it and sent me on my way. I've found what works for my hair, so what I mainly look for is a stylist who can really listen to what I want and execute it. I do not recommend this place. The up charge me $100 on a service and didn't communicate clearly with me about it. Also, everyone was really rough pulling my hair, I didn't get a detangling conditioner when I obviously have really thick tangling hair, and my stylist was going to just start blow drying my tangled hair, so she could see what the color look like without even combing it or anything . Just really basic stuff, it makes more sense to go to a fancier place and maybe pay $50 more but you get really amazing treatment and skills. Also, the waiting area was not comfortable and it was really cold, which is hard when you're sitting there with wet hair. read more

First, I want to say that Lyndon is absolutely amazing!! I followed him from the Brooklyn Heights Scott J location and am always so happy with my cut/color. He's incredibly nice, on top of being talented. The low review is solely for the front desk staff at Scott J's Upper West Side location, which has always had poor service and poor coordination (I can't tell you how many times they couldn't "find me in the system" despite being a Scott J customer for a decade or charged me different amounts for the same service) but was so bad during my last appointment that I will not go back. I showed up to an appointment before an event only to find out the stylist I'd booked wasn't coming in anymore (it was NOT Lyndon, who is always reliable). The front desk insisted they texted me to let me know, despite me showing them my phone, which had no texts or calls from them. The person at the desk had zero concern for the fact that I'd traveled an hour from Brooklyn for an appointment that no longer existed without any warning- he was visibly annoyed with me that I didn't just leave and basically rolled his eyes at me when I asked if someone else could squeeze me in. After literally begging for them to find someone to fit me in because of the important event I had, I had a rushed appointment with someone in training and end up paying $100 more than what I was quoted. To top it off, the front desk person came up to me again during my appointment to loudly declare that he saw "in the system!" that they'd called and left a message. I showed them my phone, which has the same number for the past ten years of my being a customer there- which again had no messages from them- and he continued to loudly argue with me as I was in the middle of an overpriced blowout. It was all incredibly embarrassing and some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced, especially after being a customer for so long. read more

unfortunately they ruined my hair. I signed up for a "shine coat " treatment, which is a transparent gloss for my hair. after the procedure my hair (which I never colored before) changed color. I am still dealing with the consequences. I have my won natural dark color, but after the treatment my hair is of color of rust. apparently they didn't mix the solution correctly. don't go there. costumer servoce has been rude and indifferent. this place used to be much better ten years ago. Normally I'm not the person to write reviews but after yesterday's experience I feel like I need to warn people. I was randomly booked with Laurell for a trim and truly got one of the worst haircuts I've ever had in NYC. There are pieces of my hair that I realized upon washing that are longer than the rest and my bangs are.... not good. I went in with a great shape to my haircut and asked her to keep everything the same (layers, framing, etc.) but as she was working I soon saw it was beyond her skill level to do so. The haircut itself took her about 10 minutes and I was charged $90... To make things worse, she decided to chat with me about how her instagram account was flagged for product photo that looked like something explicit in the model's hand. Basically I found her to be unprofessional both in conduct and skill level. Don't waste your money! Spend the extra $15 dollars and go somewhere where people are skilled. read more

After 4 AND A HALF HOURS my roots were blonde (I'm naturally a dark brunette) and any other highlights were no where to be seen. After sitting there all day I asked about the cut and was told "oh there was no cut put into the system." I gave the stylist the exact formula from my LA stylist- her response "oh that's too much." And I listened, big mistake, and now hot roots that need to be fixed immediately. Also, I asked them to blow out my very curly hair...done, but it really needed a run through with a flat iron. This salon charges an additional $20 for them to use a flat iron. I've been straightening my hair my entire life and have never had a salon charge for flat ironing. TACKY. And you can't tip on a credit card! This is supposed to be a high end salon!!!!! He was incredibly skilled at making my vision (and shaping my very overgrown haircut) a success! I have been to a few salons on the Upper West Side and have yet to find a stylist who easily saw my vision and helped me plan how the haircut would grow out.
