Umm, this is the umpteenth review I've given JJS. My priorities: good. clean. fast. My fave is Jackie, though Sandy once gave me a cut. Very good also. My problem, being a guy with no taste, is knowing how short or long to go. Jackie is always happy to take a few minutes to talk to me about that and then make me look better than I expected. My only quibble: when they give shampoos, there should be a paid option for a neck / scalp massage. read more

A few years ago I walked into the shop and told Jacky how I wanted my hair done She looked at my hair and told me she could not do whatI wanted until it got longer and I should come back. Shocking! She wouldn't cut my hair! She sent me away! I was so shocked that I took her card, left, let my hair get longer and came back Now, she lets me come back anytime I want. I am happy to say we have a great relationship because she let me leave without cutting my hair. My hair is 73 years old now. This place is great for men's haircuts (and for women's, judging by the repeat clientele). John has been cutting my hair for about five years. He always does a terrific job, remembers the problems my hair presents, and follows my instructions on the rare occasion when I want him to do something else -- or tells me frankly when he can't do what I've asked or thinks it would be a bad idea. He's earned my trust. The shop's vibe is very friendly and low key. I'm still amazed at how inexpensive it is compared to so many places in town. This salon is an Upper West Side treasure. I have never felt more beautiful then after my cut, color and style that I received from Sandy!! What I so appreciated was the fact that she really heard me. She totally understood what I wanted. Seemed like a decent place at first. Had a good conversation. After a 15 minutes, the cut was done. Barber asked for $41 and I was shocked considering it was only 15 minutes. I payed with a credit card and apparently they don't allow you to add tip so I payed the tip with cash. I came home and was furious when I took a closer look. Actually had to cut my own hair to clean the mistakes he made. Clearly from the picture he missed some points. Will not be back. Not worth the price. Should have went to super cuts.... read more

1 star for the great welcoming by Sam. 1 star for the cheaper price $60 for shampoo, cut, and blow-dry and the shampoo lady. I was excited to try this studio, first studio in NY since moving from SF. I've only had 2 people cut my hair for about 10 years and so I'm very nervous with others. Teri was the only one free for the walk-in, however I was hoping to get Sam. She was quick but did an average job. By average, I mean, my friend who was at the Aveda Institute cut my hair way better while she was studying and I paid her in beer. :( She was quick with the cut. But during the blow-dry, she kept brushing the side of my cheek with those painful bristle brushes when she attempted to brush my hair. Not happy. What also irked me was what she said when she told me that I have many split ends still. I thought she cut my hair to get rid of the split ends not to hide them by applying handfuls of Biosilk. Overall: I will go back, but next time, I am scheduling an appointment with Sam. In the meantime, I am going to wait the 2 weeks before I visit SF and have my friend fix my hair. read more

I would have given this place a good review had it not been for the HORRENDOUS hair washing assistant. She refused to make the chair seat any higher, which she could have easily done with a couple of towels, and sent my neck into an agony of spasm. Then she was so rough in her toweling that she boxed my ears and stuck her fingers into them! She didn't even apologize when I cried out; and the salon owner made no attempt to discipline her. Absolutely indefensible behavior. I will never return. read more

I love these guys. I actually found them on yelp after reading the reviews and came in. My previous stylist moved out of the country, and I was in a crunch! John was a perfect replacement, as he clearly has an eye for what looks best. I'm at the point where I just go in and tell him to "make me look good" and I (and more importantly my wife) am always happy. I've been growing my hair out longer, and John has helped keep it professional! I highly recommend John - great guy, upbeat, great cuts.... 5 stars for sure. read more

John is a rock star. He made my hair look hip again after several mediocre haircuts at other salons. He took great care perfectly fading the sides and back, used only scissors, and listened intently to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. Highly recommend John at this salon. I have had the HARDEST time finding a decent salon in nyc. Since I moved here a couple years ago, I'd try one stylist, be so nervous while they were doing their thing, and it wouldn't end up being anything special (worth $90? I don't think so. If I'm paying that much, it should be the best haircut in the city!). But then when I tried a cheaper place, the cut was just as bad. I would end up getting my hair cut in Boston or Sudbury when I was home! That doesn't seem right in a city that is so over-indulged with salons and places to be beautified. I'm not heading home any time soon and needed a fix! After googling and yelping a bunch of places in the upper west side, I stumbled upon Sam and Chris Hair Salon, a mere 4 blocks away from my apartment-seemed like a good place with good reviews. The salon itself isn't anything to scream about-they could totally change the look of it with just a new coat of paint on the wall and some artwork-but regardless you don't go to a salon just to look around and be in awe. John was my stylist. Very nice guy, laid back with a good sense of humor-you can tell he likes his job. I went for a cut and a color, I wanted to be crazy bold and do something really different, he was a little hesitant which I can understand since he just met me. The color came out great, and the cut was just the change I needed and I'm really happy with it. It was close to $145 for a cut, color and blowdry-that's pretty reasonable if you ask me! AND they let you pay with a credit card! I think I've found my hair salon in this city...I will definitely be back in a couple months! read more

Today marked my 4th visit at Sam & Chris, the 3rd appointment with Jon. I keep a short, textured hairstyle that's turned out pretty bland in the past, and the stylists always reach for the clippers and buzz away - not Jon! I've never seen a stylist work with a pair of scissors the way he does. I'm amazed at his technique and attention to detail. I highly recommend making an appointment with Jon for all you guys out there who prefer the salon over the barber, and just want a great, unique haircut without the frills, product-pitches, and inflated prices of other NYC salons. read more

I am SO picky about who cuts my hair and rarely try anyone new... But since moving to New York from Hawaii, I can't rely on going home anymore to get my hair cut and had to test the waters in the big city. Mike was my third stylist here in the city and hands down the best AND most reasonably priced for a full service wash, cut and style. The shop itself is nothing to marvel at as far as flashy decor and elbow room, but when it comes down to it, what should matter is the stylist and how good I look walking OUT of the salon (which was fabulous). Mike cut my hair (he was recommended to me by a friend whose hair looked fabulous as well) exactly the way I wanted it, only better, and once he was finished asked to make sure it was the way I wanted and didn't hesitate to take a few more snips to make it just right. Before I got in the chair he was cutting the hair of a 5 year old and he impressed the pants off of me by the way he worked with him without once having to ask his bobbling head to stay still. I found this salon by chance and thought well I will give them a try. My hair is hard to deal with since it has sections that are curly and sections that are straight. And they were just great. It's a intimate atmosphere where the customers come first. Friendly and detailed oriented. With a good eye for what will look good on you! Love this place! I tepidly gave up on my DC hair salon after I could no longer justify that 7 hour round trip train ticket to continue going to my fav DC salon. So, thanks to Yelp, I found this place by my house. To be clear, it's nothing special to look at, for this is not your fancy, lavender scented cucumber water sort of place. Its instead a small salon on a busy strip of Broadway with peeling paint in some corners and water stains on the roof. The benefit of the low rent digs is a hair cut for men will cost $40 with shampoo as opposed to $90. And Jeanette did a great job. She took a long time to understand what I wanted (aided by some photos) and did not let me leave that chair until we were both happy. Shears did not come out once either which always makes me happy! read more

The hunt for a good haircut is not easy in the city. I went to another salon on the UWS because the rates were the cheapest I could find in my neighborhood ($35 for shampoo and cut). It ended up being a disaster. I have really long hair and just wanted a trim. The stylist added a bunch of choppy layers to the point that it looked like a bad 80s style (lots of hair at the top and very thin on the bottom). So when I came to Sam and Chris Hair Salon I was in desperate need of a repair. Jacky cut my hair and she was wonderful. I always have to take my glasses off during haircuts and thus am blind till the end when the big reveal is either a horrid surprise or a relief. With Jacky, she would stop throughout the cut and ask me to put on my glasses to see if I liked what she was doing. She ended up taking my horrendously butchered long hair and made it a cute mid-length cut to my collarbone as I asked. She also textured and layered my hair so everything blends nicely. Overall Jacky has major talent and the rest of the staff were super sweet (definitely mom and pop, family feel). Even though the cut and shampoo was kinda pricey for me ($60, which I suppose is standard for NYC), I will definitely go back to Sam and Chris! read more

Mike is an amazing colorist! (a pretty awesome haircutter, too, though his definition of "just a trim" differed from mine by about 2 inches.) I've been coloring my stubborn greys for years now, and have never had a result that looked so natural and healthy. And they don't leave you in the chair for hours while they take care of other customers. Mike is fast, thorough, cheap and - best of all - fantastic. You'll get results that look like they cost 3x as much. read more

Where has Sam been all my life? Living in NYC, finding a reasonably priced hair stylist isn't an easy task. Finding a reasonably priced good hair stylist is even tougher. But to find a reasonably priced hair stylist that will get you almost without words, and give you your best hair cut and color (Balyage) ever, I thought was impossible. But I found Sam! I think it was around $60 for a hair cut. I requested Sam and I really like my hair cut! He was friendly and seemed to know what he was doing. When he was layering the back of my hair though, it hurt quite a bit. Maybe he was thinning out my hair since it's pretty think. He was using the scissors so it's pointed down and cut it by sliding the scissors down (sorry if this sounds a little confusing). I've had something like this done before but it didn't hurt this much. But anyways, the haircut turned out great and I would come back. read more

Sandy, Jackie, and John have taken over the ownership and the salon is more cheerful, more enjoyable, certainly modernized and definitely cleaner.
