I haven't colored my hair in over 10 years, so I was a bit nervous about getting my hair dyed…read moreagain. I always go for a natural look and wanted something that wouldn't be obvious when it grows out because I wasn't sure if I would keep up with dying my roots. My hair colorist suggested a few shades of auburn, as I requested a subtle red/brown color. We agreed on a medium chocolate color, and it turned out absolutely gorgeous. The color is very natural and just a subtle change in overall hue. It's exactly the little bit of color I wanted. I also added a Seal treatment to lock in the color. The shampoo and Seal treatment smelled amazing. I loved relaxing in the chair when my hair got washed. I should have asked which shampoo was used on my hair because I really loved the scent and the fact that their products do not contain harsh chemicals. I especially like how they advertise which chemicals/ingredients are not in the hair dye (see my photo of the color bar.) I have been hesitant to color my hair for years because I'm trying to grow it out and apply as little heat and chemicals as possible. My hair tends to be very dry, especially at the ends, so I don't want it to become drier, however, Madison Reed products seem to be high quality. My hair does not feel any more dry than it did prior to being colored. If anything their dye helps make hair silky and smooth. I'm contemplating returning for the unlimited roots membership, which seems like a great deal. I would definitely recommend Madison Reed to anyone who is looking to color their hair. The salon is very clean and aesthetically pleasing. The girl at the front desk and woman who colored my hair were both very welcoming and friendly. It's nice they have a couple other locations in the chicagoland area, as well. All in all, I was nervous before my experience, but ended up being very happy with the result. I noticed there are a few words of encouragement on the walls of the salon, including confident boosters, and that's exactly what I got: this little bit of color did in fact boost my confidence! It's just enough to look natural, but also give me a bit of an overall different hue. Thank you Madison Reed and staff for my wonderful experience!

The salon is clean, and does not smell of product. My first colorist was very nice. I liked the color. My only complaint was I had roots showing within a couple of days. I had joined the pro level subscription, which meant I could get my roots done as often as I wanted. This is where it went downhill. When I went to try to get my roots done, I was told there was nothing wrong with them, and it must be the lighting. For a company who says you can come in as many times as you'd like for root touch ups at the pro level, they certainly do not want you to. The tech did my roots. The next day, I dried my hair, and my roots were showing!! I used the powder they sold me, and waited two weeks. I went back for another root touch up. The same thing happened. I washed my hair, with appropriate products, and my roots appeared. Whatever they had been using since my first trip was not permanent. I now had well over a half an inch of roots. We come to today. The tech asked if I used demi-permanent or permanent dye. I said "Permanent dye." I was getting an all over dye color, hoping this would color all of my roots. I was shampooed. I dried my hair, and left. Imagine my shock and dismay when I looked in the mirror and saw my roots!! What products are they using over there? No, it's not the lighting. No, it's not an "ashy" color. I went home and my son noticed right away. My husband noticed when he came home. I am very disappointed. I have cancelled my membership.

Updating my review before the year's end!…read more I obviously opted to return after my negative experience over the summer, and ever since that visit, the staff behind the front desk have been nothing but attentive, professional and kind. Alecjia is still the best of the best when it comes to nails, and always goes above and beyond. I have a very physical job, plus I am in the gym multiple times a week, and I have had my nails chip maybe twice in the last year between my bi-weekly appointments. When she has been booked, I've also had the pleasure of having Galina do my nails as well. Both women have their own unique touch to their services, but I've been happy with the outcome each time. The salon is beautiful since the unexpected "remodel" earlier this year, and is always kept in pristine condition.

This salon offers many other services, from hair color, cutting, facials, massages, and more. I generally come in for just coloring and for my hair cuts. I love coming to get my hair colored. I've had Christy work on my coloring, and have gotten highlights/balayage. I am guilty of waiting far too long between sessions to get my hair done but every time I come in I feel like a new woman. There's also something about come out of getting your hair colors with no more gray lights, and shiny hair that just feels like an extra sparkle. My most recent time, I visited and was schedule for my hair cut with Izzy. She was a delight, she made me feel right at home. Talking me through my hair thickness and now to style it in a way that it will grow out healthy again. The check out process was super easy as well, we check out at the front and they adjust the type of services you had, and you pay and go about your day. Keep in mind that tipping is strictly cash, and you put it in an envelope fro your stylist.

To set the context, I'm particularly picky about my haircuts and have made the trek down to…read moreChinatown to get them for more than a decade. In this particular instance though, I was a bit desperate. I needed to get a haircut before a trip I was taking to meet some professional clients and did not have time to drive all the way to Chicago to get one before I left. I saw that this salon had just opened up fairly close to me, had some good reviews, and that being new (though I think they actually were just in a different location), they would know how to cut more contemporary styles. Overall, I've been to this location 4 times now and here's a breakdown of my experience: 1st haircut = 5 stars 2nd haircut = 5 stars 3rd haircut = 3 stars (4th time was to fix what I considered a really uneven haircut) My 1st haircut exceeded my expectations. I was really impressed by how close to what I wanted my hair stylist Yana was able to cut my hair. I showed her a picture, described a few things I wanted, and it felt as though she put in a lot of care and detail to each part of my haircut. My 2nd haircut a month later was essentially the same as the 1st and I was really happy to have found a place to get my haircut that was only 20 minutes away instead of an hour plus. My 3rd haircut though was a huge bummer. In part, it might have been the circumstances because they had a walk-in come in at the same exact time I had scheduled my appointment and they initially confused the walk-in as the person who booked the appointment, and so perhaps it had something to do with the divided attention (she would switch off cutting each of our hair during the shampooing the hair phase - you can opt to do it before or after the haircut). When I got home, my wife remarked at how unevenly cut my hair was. When I compared it to the pictures I took the 1st two times, it felt like a different haircut even though I asked for the exact same thing each time. I called them the next day to ask if I could come in for a fix and after a bit of confusion on the phone, I scheduled something for two days later, a Friday (Yana doesn't go in on Thursdays). To set some additional context, the salon's usual patrons are usually all Korean and are able to speak Korean with the stylists. I bring that up because while I observed that, it wasn't very clear to me how much English was or wasn't understood (since I don't speak Korean nor am I Korean). I just assumed they knew enough to get my haircut done the way I wanted. When making my follow-up appointment for the fix, the confusion became more apparent that it was a language obstacle. When I got there on Friday, I knew something was off because it felt like Yana went through an entire haircut with me. I expected to only spend about 5 minutes getting my hair fixed but it ended up being the usual 25ish minutes with shampoo and everything. It was only after the haircut when this other lady told me the cost, that I had to explain to them I had just come for a fix. I thought Yana would recognize me since I had just gotten a haircut earlier that week but that didn't seem to be the case at the end. To their credit, when they realized the misunderstanding, they were super nice about it and didn't charge me anything and so it ended up with me getting a shorter version of the haircut I initially came for (at least it was even). In the end, I have some mixed feelings. On one hand, I have gotten very good haircuts here in the past and intend on going at least once more to see how it goes, especially because I'm intending to do the same style I've done the past few times. On the other hand, I also recognize that there exists a communication barrier if you're not a Korean speaker, which means if you're asking for a style that is different from what they're used to cutting, things may get lost in translation. I do believe that they will do their best to understand and to accommodate. If in doubt, Google Translate is your friend.
