Started with my pedicure @ my fav salon on Grand Avenue. Met Jan and commented on her astonishing haircut. She gave me the hairdresser's name & contact #. Scheduled my cut, lo & behold, she was magically there with her sister from out of town on the day of my cut. I asked for Jan's haircut, I am pleased. Service was on point. So happened there was the Lunar parade today, so I was dropped off & picked up as parking was next to impossible. What are the chances of meeting Jan there @ the Hair Salon? Went there for a haircut on a late Saturday afternoon. The barber was skilled and did a decent job.

If you're looking for thinning your hair, this is the place. But if you're looking for define layers, bold look, I don't think this is the place for you. I just had the worst haircut of my life. Short on top all the way flat down to my neck due to "layers". I wish the barber understands that thinning does not equal to layering. Still upset over this haircut because it is completely different than what I showed him and it's going to take months for me to grow my hair out to chin length for the top "layers". read more

If you don't have straight hair, please save yourself by not going to this salon. I went in today for a women's haircut, I have 3b textured curly hair. I asked the guy to trim my hair by 1" and he did a good job until then. The worst mistake of my life is asking for some layers towards the top. I could tell he had never dealt with curly hair before because he kept telling me 'too much hair'. Yes, I do have thick hair but I literally walked out almost bold. He used thinning shears all the way from the top throughout my entire head, by the time I realized that he was done I had no hair left. I have been growing out my hair for years, and literally paid and walked out of there crying. My hair is completely damaged, frizzy and dry after this haircut and will take years to recover. I now have to go spend way more money on extensions because I clearly can't live with it. read more

Sounds like David is great but I don't have any experience with him personally. In fact we found out about this location recently because Salon Hair House closed around the corner. Our family and friends had been going there for years to see Sylvia so we're beyond happy to know she's still around. Stopped by there today with my son for both of us and it went great. They have a beautiful fish tank up front and a waiting area. All the stations are spread out and everything looks modern and clean. Sylvia did great work as usual and is always friendly and professional. My wife and daughter are also her customers and we can't recommend her enough. I've been coming here periodically for the better part of a decade, and David has never given me a bad haircut. I can't speak to to his experience with other hair types, but he really knows his way around fine, straight East Asian hair. He's meticulous and has good memory of repeat customers. His prices are approximately $20 men's/$30 women's (it might've been $25/$35). While not cheap for Oakland Chinatown, and while you're not getting an upscale salon environment here, this is a very reasonable cost for the quality of work he does. I've been to several hair salons both below & above his price range in Oakland downtown & Chinatown where I've walked out wishing I could pay money to undo their work. David has reliably rescued any unsatisfactory work from other hairdressers or my own hands. As of 2022/2023, David is now at the Oakland Webster location every day but Monday. Reservations by phone recommended. A lot of his clients are Cantoneses speakers, but I've gotten perfectly good results just speaking English with him. read more
