This review is well overdue and belated... but they say "better late than never", right?! I have been coming to Salon Del Mar inside the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort (previously Fess Parker) for just over 2 years. Jakob has been my stylist from day one and is just as much of a perfectionist as myself. Although my haircut could take 10 minutes anywhere else, he takes the extra time with each clip of his scissors to make my hair just perfect. Over time, he has earned my trust to restyle my hair--not an easy feat! During my appointments we tend to be the free entertainment for the rest of the salon given our endless bickering and chuckling. However, when I need a break from it all, I simply look out the large salon windows at the gorgeous ocean view with the Channel Islands in the background. Nonetheless, Jakob is super talented and remains still affordable in comparison to other salons throughout Santa Barbara/Montecito. All the stylists at Salon del Mar are sweet and fun to carry on conversations with--Shout-out to Sherry the owner, Kara and Annie. When I have an appointment, I technically kill three birds with one stone because: - I can drink a glass of wine during my cut - I can charge my electric/EV car in the hotel lot for free (parking validation available) - I receive an amazing style, shampoo/condition and cut Every time I leave here all beautified, my inner diva feels the need to sing Toderick Hall's song "Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels!" I was left extremely devastated with the experience I had with this company/stylist, I was treated with no professionalism. I had scheduled a month in advance for a bridal hair appointment for a Monday April 18th at 9 AM. I originally tried making an appointment online but never got a response so I had to call in which wasn't an easy feat. I understand cases where businesses are short staffed but the stylist "Sherry" I spoke to over the phone, assured me she would make an exception to come in for me on a Monday. Baring in mind it was right after the easter weekend, you would think there would be better planning on her part. She should have been back in Santa Barbara the night before our appt. I chose this salon because it was convenient as I was staying at the Hilton hotel where the salon is located. I had planned to go down in my robe and maybe sip on champagne. On the day of my wedding Sherry texts me at 5:45 AM "can you triple confirm??? I'll have to leave now I'm coming from San Diego." Who triples confrims a wedding the day of? I didn't see this until 7am when I got up. I was frozen in place waiting around thinking there was still a chance she would make it on time or at least an hour later. I kept checking in with her every few minutes or so, her eta kept getting later and later. Nor could she find a replacement in the meantime. Obviously I was not expecting this to happen, instead of getting ready I had wasted two hours calling around trying to find a replacement. Most businesses were not even open yet therefore I had to leave a bunch of voicemails and the ones that were open were fully booked until the afternoon which was no use to me as my ceremony was at 1pm. I had to get my husband to run around and buy me curling tongs/ flat irons etc. since I never brought my own. Luckily I did get a call back around 10:30AM from Havon Salon in Montecito. So rushed over there. I had to be fully ready to leave the hotel room at 12:30pm to make the wedding yet I was still in a robe and only just showered. The stylist at Havon (Beatrice) was a godsend, she was very accommodating and knowing my situation, she squeezed me into her busy schedule while she was processing another clients hair. By the time I was done, I was only left with 20 minutes to get dressed and do make up, barely making it to the wedding on time. For what is supposed to be "the best day of my life" I have never experienced such stress and anxiety. I was not able to be in the moment and savor the ritual of getting ready for my husband to be. From beginning to end our (my daughters and my) experience was wonderful. Making an appointment and getting to the salon was easy and pleasant. My daughter, who is Black and Latina, has a lot of beautiful curls/coils and it is difficult to find a stylist that is patient and knowledgeable. Kara Jacobs is very familiar and comfortable with my daughters hair type and with a quick cut was able to reshape my daughters hair, bringing new life to it. She also flat-ironed her hair and my daughter was able to keep the style up for a over a week. Over the past five years my daughter has learned to care for and manage her curls but I would trust Kara if they were in need of detangling and repair as they've been in the past. Everyone here is extremely talented and extremely knowledgeable on the current trends that are going on. I love that they are also a sustainable salon and use brands that are conscience of the environment. Kevin Murphy and Davines being two of the brands they use. I love the new Salon Del Mar! It's under new ownership and it looks beautiful inside! I went to the opening and loved looking at their new product lines and checking out the new decor. My go-to girl is Sherry and she's amazing. I love going to her for a cut & color because she always does a great job. She is very open minded and also offers tips based on your needs and wants. When it comes to eyebrows, I am super lazy about taking care of them so I go to Sherry for an eyebrow wax and tint! They also do makeup and nails I believe but I haven't had either of these services yet. Overall I really love the atmosphere and friendly, relaxed vibe in the salon. I wasn't able to make my hair appointment at home before we left for 7 weeks vacation. I REALLY hate getting my hair done, (sitting for hours - ) and having to do anything with my hair. my stylist at home knows me and is so good about making sure whatever she does is simple and no fuss. Needless to say having to go to someone else was a little stressful. However, Sienna was incredible. She was helpful and didn't bat an eye regarding all of (or lack there of) my hair care. Best salon ever!! I am so glad I found this place. I have never felt more beautiful in the world than when I had my hair done here. I had never died my hair before and now I will trust these people with anything. They are amazing. I have only had jakob and sherry do my hair, but you can't go wrong. Everyone at the salon is amazing. They also did my makeup and helped me not only find everything to buy, but actually helped me learn to do my makeup that way. I was delighted to find out that Anthony is still cutting hair in town after having a terrible experience at his old salon with another stylist. He offered to fix my horrible cut for free. First of all, the salon is so cute with ocean views in the Fess Parker. I felt like I was on a vacation. They even validate parking. The location is just incredible and the feel of it is great. Anthony is incredibly personable and passionate about what he's doing. He fixed another stylist's rush job because he loves what he does. He listens and makes sure you are 100% satisfied before you leave. No one has ever cut my hair quite so well and I think it's because he has a really immense understanding for how hair looks and moves. Beautiful venue, terrible service. They aren't a full service salon first off. NO acrylics or gel extensions but they do do basic gels, but not gels on toes because they don't know how to- they told me they could "try" - I didn't want to risk it with that answer. The gels don't even have a booklet/color samples to look at so unless you already know what you want, you have to open each bottle to get an idea of the right color. Plus they have a super small selection of which colors are mostly the same. Once we finally got through that, she started the gel mani, but they had issues with their outdated light the whole time. We had to redo the manicure at least six times because it would dry bumpy in between the light issues and her evident lack of skill. I felt like it was me and a friend who had no idea what we're doing. Sorry to be so blunt, the staff is super nice, really sweet people but it takes more than niceness to make me feel satisfied with my nails that everyone will see. It's was horrible and took forever. To top it off, they still charged me full price (80 w/o tip) and the manicure didn't even last a week. I had to go to LA. read more

Horrible. Save the time of trying to get your money back and just spend it elsewhere. Turns out their Salon is not owned by Fess Parker so it is not held to any responsibility by the hotel. Being the reputation of the Fess Parker I went booked a service for a balayage at their salon. When I showed up I was more than disappointed by the experience from the get go. The salon is more like a Cost Cutters than a salon. The space is tiny, out of date and poorly taken care of. When I walked in my stylist was at the front desk and his first words were: "Are you Amanda? Ok, just wait a minute, I need to call a client." He never introduced himself through the entire appointment. He was well-mannered for the most part but didnt seem to care too much about what I was asking for, but instead just kind of talking in circles, but I showed him a lot of photos and he said he could m ake it happen. Half way through the appointment I finally stopped him when I realized he was just taking sheets of my hair and painting brown dye over my blonde (literally). Being familiar with the baayage process I asked "I thought we were doing a balayage, is this going to be more like an ombre?" - he passively said it will be a mixture of both but not to worry about it. HUGE MISTAKE on my end for not stopping him. Then when he asked if I wanted a trim, I decided sure, another HUGE mistake. He asked if I wanted a straight cut or circular, I said straight, and he literally lopped my hair off in a straight line and called it a day. I asked for him to tone my hair so it was more ash than bronze - when he washed my hair, I didn't think I felt that happen so when I asked if he toned it he said "I used purple shampoo, it will be fine". 1.5 hrs later (normally this is a 4+ hr process and i have a LOT of hair) he had me washed, dryed, cut and heading out the door. Note: the girl with the pixie cut but behind me getting highlights who had been then quite a while before I was, was STILL having the color put in when I left. Let's just say the color was HORRIBLE. My head resembled a black and white cookie (with a little more blending at the connection point). The stylist was so careless with the dye that I had BROWN SPOTS all over the remaining blonde (which I had paid quite a heavy price to get in the first place). Finally after 3 coworkers and one of my bosses asked me why my blonde was now green, I called the salon to ask for my money back so I could go else where to get it fixed. After declining returning to have it fixed the salon owner said she would take care of it. I originally offered after the owner said she would fix everything and give the refund to send photos of the horrible cut color and tone, then I decided I owed her no explanation, they butchered my hair, wasted my time, and now I had to do it again (7 months pregnant). Her excuse for not refunding my money was that she wants those photos. Its been 6 months, and I am still trying to get my money back. When I went to get my hair fixed, I was telling my stylist what had happened - I was the third correction appointment from the Fess Parker that week. read more

Arrived an hour early for an appointment with Fabian. He immediately put me at ease and worked me in without missing a beat or putting anyone else off. Iced water was handed me, and coffee offered (it was early morning). Each stylist seemed busy at their stations and yet pleasant to each other and helpful when needed. Absolutely incredible hair salon. I went there initially due to the deal in the Axxess book for 50% off your first treatment. Not really knowing what I wanted, I had my hair lightened by Sienna, who was gracious enough to stay late for me on a Saturday and fit me in last minute before a trip of mine. Being my first hair color experience I was a little uncertain, but then I got used to the lighter hair and loved it. Months later, I made the mistake of trying to get a touch up color done at a different salon using another Axxess deal. Ended up with horrendous chunky highlights and lowlights. Again, Sienna was incredible and came in on her day off to fix the mistake. The result was beautiful and I can't believe she was able to work with the color I had. On top of that, I finally found someone who can cut curly hair! I think they have great prices for the services they provide and I couldn't recommend Sienna more for the wonderful care and work she puts into her client's hair. read more
