Brandy McDonald at Twigs is far and away this City's bet kept secret !!! In fact she's the ONLY stylist I have returned to over and over again since my first visit to the salon two years ago. I had to write this review after my last color with Brandy - I was bleach blonde and wanted to go back to my dark brunette roots but not loose the glamourous pop of color that the blonde had given me...we ended up doing an OMBRE color (VERY VERY tricky to do right- it not as easy as DIYers people say it is. That gradual, gorgeous fading of colors is hard to get.) And MY GOD...my hair is a work of ART. Like a beautiful sunset of warm browns and golden blonde- I've lived with it for a few weeks now and I keep getting more and more compliments. Men seriously have stopped in the street and turned their heads when I have walked by...it's crazy! I work in Film-Television Production and I've even had onset hair and make-up crew members ask me about my hair...and let me tell you when I went into to see Brandy last month my hair was frazzled and funky (I was wearing scarves around my head ala Rhoda most of the time since I hadn't been able to make time to go into to see Brandy for almost 6 months and I had tried to color my hair from blonde to light brunette on my own...oh what a horror story! ). I don't know about you ladies (and gents) but all i want from my hair is 24-7 sex appeal and damn if I don't get it EVERY TIME. THANK YOU Brandy and Twigs. It's a cozy and intimate salon with an entire group of incredible women working there, no matter who you see you'll be happy- but if you want a serious artist whose canvas is your hair Brandy is the one to see. Her schedule fills up quickly but she can usually squeeze me in on Tuesdays or a late Saturday. Just call ahead to check for an opening - you won't be sorry. I think each of the stylists charges different rates and some are cash only so be sure to ask about that before you make an appointment (just so you don't stress about it later). Went in for a color consultation. The 1st colorist I met with told me she did not have the skills to do what I needed (I was just going from brunette to blonde) and that I should speak to the owner, Julie. She assured me the owners don't charge more than the stylists & literally said, "it's not like she will charge $300 or anything." She told me she'd tell Julie everything about my hair from our consult. Instead Julie had me send reference photos, asked me all of the same questions as in the consult, and then told me that to get what I wanted it would require 2-3 visits, for "all day" appointments, and that her rates were $150 an hour. So by this math going blonde could have been as much as $3600. Before tip!! (By the way charging someone hourly while bleach sits on their head, and the stylist does nothing, should be illegal). And also, she couldn't get me in for 3 weeks anyways cause she was "so busy". I sent the same photos to Salon 87 (an actual high end salon, in Williamsburg) and they quoted me $450 total (one appointment, 6 hours long). It is mind blowing Twigs is actually in business w/ their offensively structured pricing & awful customer service, so beware..... dinosaurs are still roaming the earth in the EV. read more

I scheduled a simple wash-n-go curly cut with Maryanna, and it was fantastic. I had come in wanting a gigantic change, and was thinking about chopping off six or seven inches. She expressed that four inches will give me the change that I wanted and still be flattering, and I'm very glad I listened to her, because it's now at the perfect length. I wasn't happy with the way it looked at first - the shape didn't look right. I expressed my concerns via email, and she took it very seriously, having me back in that same day and staying late on a rainy night, carefully tweaking the shape, strand by strand. Didn't give me a trace of attitude of pushback. And now, it feels like I just have the perfect haircut. At only $85, this was a fantastic deal. My cut is definitely worthy of the much more expensive salons in New York. read more

Note: This is for a visit some time ago, but it was great! Walked in here angry with my recently cut bangs already totally out of shape. Stacie sat me down with no appointment and talked me through a quick remedy. She did a really good job on a head of hair she had never seen before and charged me what I consider a very reasonable price for NYC. The salon in general has a very attentive and personal feeling. Hmm... I booked a haircut and ombre haircolor services with Janell, based on many awesome reviews I read - so you can imagine I was pretty excited. Pros: - Janell is great to talk to and super down to earth. She gives great opinions and is very detailed on what she is going to do with your hair. I really appreciated that. - Salon ambiance is hip yet welcoming and unpretentious. Everyone here is freelance so they're just cool girls doing their own thing. - I have very fine, straight hair, so it's hard to get a WOW haircut in any capacity. With that in mind, I think I got a simple yet chic haircut. Could've had a bit more style since I don't think anyone noticed I cut my hair... - Placement of the ombre color made it look very well transitioned. Cons: - I had to go back 2X to get the ombre color right...the first time, bleach did nothing to the hair (weird?). The second time, the color lightened, but not to the degree I would've liked. My biggest issue was that it was really orange and brassy, when I emphasized that I wanted a very ASHY light brown/dark blonde. The first couple of days I was very unhappy with the color since I looked chinatown cheap and "high-schooly" so my co-worker said, but I decided to not deal with the hassle of going back a third time, so I just ended up putting toner on myself (it looks a LOT better now). - Charges tax if you pay by card... Most people have had a great experience here...but I might be better off sticking to the Japanese salons for my asian hair. read more

This salon is awesome! Back in December, I stumbled across Twigs' yelp page/website and emailed them for guidance on which stylist to book an appointment with. Julie, one of the owners, answered promptly and gave a few suggestions, and I ultimately scheduled an appointment with her. It's now been about a month since my visit and this is the most happy I have ever been with a haircut in MY LIFE. I showed her a few photos when I first sat down, and she completely understood the look I was going for! She was incredibly kind, a great conversationalist, and really took time and care into giving me a great haircut. This place is such a gem. I scheduled a cut with Julie, one of the owners, after a recommendation from a coworker who has been going to her for a while. I was going from a shoulder length bob to a slightly more edgy long pixie cut, which was a HUGE step. I brought lots of photos and Julie asked a bunch of questions before we got started with anything. I first found out about Twigs when I stopped a woman in a coffee shop and asked her where she got her hair cut (I was new to NYC and her hair seemed very similar to mine: fine and curly.) She told me Twigs was the only place to go. A year or so later I came by and that woman was SO right! Since then I've worked with Anne and Maryanna: they're both sweet and talented ladies. I confess, I'm a salon hopper. In my 20 years in the city, I've been from Fox and Jane to Cutler to Soon.... I then became loyal to Bumble and Bumble for 3 years, until my stylist went on maternity, and I got tired of the phone receptionists cold, unhelpful attitude. So I researched up the wazoo for a stylist who could take my fine hair shorter that I could feel confident with. I decided to try Kumi at Twigs and am SO grateful I did. I brought in photos, but was all over the map. She said "There are many different things in each of these photos, so I'm not clear!" I laughed at myself because I NEED someone who will be up front with me. We settled on a chin length blunt bob. When it came time for the blow dry, I always tense up. I'm really great at blow drying my own fine, lifeless hair, giving it body and straightening the awkward wavy parts just right, and am usually disappointed with the jobs at salons. I'll often give the stylist a first go, and then do it myself on subsequent trips, because it's always awkward to tell them I'm better. But Kumi said "go please do what you like, it would be good for me to see how you like to style your own hair." And she sat and watched me the entire time. At the end, she gave me a tip to keep the style from curving under like a 50's housewife, and it WORKED. I don't remember the last time I've been this happy with a cut. My hair looks like it has an edgy blunt bob which is super hard for fine hair to pull off, and I owe it to Kumi. The salon itself was small and inviting, and everyone was pretty comfortable chatting with their hairdressers. I only wish it were closer to where I lived, but hey- I'll travel for good hair!!! read more

Julie at twig! Saved my hair from certain chop! Someone had ruined my hair, it was awful, I mean I was just embarrassed to go out, I felt old, ugly and awful. It just a terrible shade of maroon that I had not asked for. Not only was she able to correct the color, she did so without the kind of damage that requires a cut...and my hair is half way down my back. I went from hideous goth, to lovely Sansa Stark in just a few hours. She was also a lovely person, and a great conversationalist;) After our first session I have given her total control of my hair. It was such a relief to have been referred to her. I was impressed by the salon in general, everyone was just fantastic. Someone else got a snow white pixie kind of thing that was to die for. Oh my God, this place is frigging amazing. I have thick, curly hair that had been butchered three cuts in a row, and was at the end of my rope, wearing it pulled back in a sad ponytail every day. A total stranger, with similar hair, suggested Twigs, saying that a stylist there had transformed her friend entirely, so I booked an appointment with Kristiana, who did indeed completely transform me. When I walked in, my hair was top heavy and hideously triangular, utterly unflattering to my long-ish, oval face. She cut tons of layers, so my curls frame my face, sort of in the vein of St. Vincent (the singer). Suddenly, my eyes look huge, my face less drawn and tired (and long), everything just works again. I feel like a new person. The night of my cut, I saw friends who all said, "you look amazing," but -- here's the key part -- weren't completely sure that I'd cut my hair. They just thought I looked great. Same with my husband. Added bonuses: Kristiana is lovely, funny, kind, a great listener and talker, smart and engaged with the world. I loved spending an hour with her. And the other stylists were equally lovely. The shampoo guy, too, is amazing, and gave me a fantastic head and neck massage. The salon itself has a warm, wonderful design (lots if raw wood), which makes you feel instantly at ease. And also: the range of clients was massive, from conservative uptownish girls with basic bobs, to fashiony types, to fully tattooed East Villagers having their hair made crazy colors, and everyone in-between (like me; I am indeed somewhere between all three!). Every single person I saw left looking amazing, and I would totally trust them with anything. (Am thinking of switching over for color.) It's now been almost two months and the cut is growing out beautifully. People comment on it -- literally stop me on the street -- regularly and ask me where I get my hair cut. So, I went here with my girlfriend while she was getting her hair dyed. She ended up getting a great ombré (whatever that is) dye job that she loves. The price was reasonable, not too cheap but still lower than most places in the city. My favorite part was the two glasses of red wine that they gave me. Delicious. And free. Janell's latest creation, Twigs Salon, is above and beyond the best experience I have had in terms of hair care. Janell herself is amazing. She has been doing my hair since 2003, and I've followed her from Soon Beauty Lab, to Ruby 6, and now to Twigs. She automatically knows my cut and color style, and the laid back feel of the salon makes me feel like I'm not being rushed, and I can just sit back and relax. The decor of Twigs is great, perfectly reflective of the owners' own personalities and style, and the urban edge goes hand in hand with what the stylists do. I can't believe I'm only writing my first review since I've been seeing Janell for at least 6 years already! She is hands down the best colorist I've ever been to and has always gone above and beyond for me. Basically, I'm a control freak. I'm obsessive about the smallest details, and to have found someone who not only understands what I want but also is willing to indulge my often conflicting desires, is pretty much a miracle. She is a MASTER of subtlety with color and knows exactly how to keep it natural even though I know she is capable of crazy dramatic looks too. She just really got to know me as a client and what i like and has never ever tried to push an idea on to me. The only time she ever said to go for it was when I was on the fence about chopping all my long hair off into a blunt bob but I thankfully did it and I happily rocked that cut for 2 years. Now, although I dream of pink hair and a bowl cut, I'm just really attached to my simple long light brown/honey highlighted hair with a blunt cut and straight bangs. I usually go about 3 months between visits when I start noticing one bad hair day after another, then I go see Janell for a tune up and when I get back home my boyfriend says "what did you do, it looks the same?" STACIE!! Stacie is queen of the curls. After my long time stylist disappeared into thin air, I went through numerous terrible cuts by so called curly hair specialists. Then I met a woman whose curls were similar to mine, large and smaller banana curls and waves- and I asked her who cut her hair. That is how I found Stacie. Stacie consulted with me, really understood what my trouble has been with other stylists and spoke to me as if she had been working with my hair for years. She took over one hour cutting my hair the first time that I saw her- I really appreciate that she took that time to get to know my hair and really bring my curls and shape back to life! Stacie is a SWEETHART and such a pleasure to talk to while I am there. It is so refreshing not to have to listen to somebody complain about this and that at a hair salon. I didn't even overhear that typical hair salon drama from other chairs. Very positive and warm vibe there. The second time I went I let her color my hair and it looks fabulous. Sal the floor manager/hair washer guy is super sweet, funny and gives the best scalp massage ever when he washes- worth the tip for him. And they have wine. read more

I had a great experience with Anne- she really took the time to get to know what I wanted which I appreciated since it is rare for a stylist to actually take the time to do that. It was fairly expensive and no frills but for a major cut- it is worth it to get it right. Only weird thing was seeing another stylist and the owner blowing out their own hair. I thought it was a bit unprofessional to do that when you have clients there getting their hair done. That aside- I would go back to get my hair done. For dog lovers- the owner has an absolutely sweet dog there. read more

Bethany who is pretty much a hair genius just fixed a terrible terrible haircut I stupidly got in another country. I have extremely thick hair and the hairdresser thinned it out to muppet density. Bethany did weird magic cutting moves and made is look like it was thicker and practically regrown. I kind of can't believe my eyes. A hair miracle. She is super nice and funny and totally excellent. Anne has been cutting and coloring my hair since 2001. I have had it long, short, layered, blond, brown and everything in-between. She recently joined Twigs, and the space is so cute and cozy, with friendly assistants who make sure you are comfortable in every way and are great at shampooing. But back to Anne: When it comes to your hair, Anne has zero ego. Your haircut and color are not about her, or her pushing some idea on you of how she thinks you should look. She is 100% about making you happy and giving you what you want. She's also friendly and open, but if you are not the sort who wants to chat during your service, she won't talk your ear off, either. And her eye for color is phenomenal. She is a true artist, and knows just which shade will flatter you best. Highly recommended!! read more
