I had a really disappointing experience with Marilo. When I first walked in, she commented about how much hair I have, which felt unprofessional and caught me off guard. It seemed like she was unhappy from the moment I arrived. Marilo then told me that I booked the wrong service and said I needed a color correction instead of the all-over color I requested. I said that's fine, and asked for dark brown, but we ended up disagreeing because she wanted to dye my hair black. My hair is dark brown, not black. When I asked how we could achieve the brown color I wanted, she said I needed to highlight my entire head, which confused me and made me feel like she was trying to charge me more. It wasn't just this conversation that was off-putting; it was the entire interaction; she was abrasive and extremely rude. Not just "direct" like some people have mentioned in reviews, Direct I can handle, this was inappropriate and very odd. I was just in complete disbelief, that she would talk to me this way. During the conversation, she kept interrupting me and wouldn't let me speak, which I found really frustrating and rude. I don't feel comfortable having someone with this kind of attitude work on my hair, so I left. Unfortunately, I did not do my due diligence beforehand, but other people have expressed these same issues, isn't the point to get more clients instead of driving them away with complete lack of tact? I am so happy I found Marilo. I came to her salon over a year ago with damaged and over treated hair. I had a look in mind for my hair, which was not what I had. Marilo gave me excellent advice and implemented expert corrective coloring. She uses only the highest of quality products on your hair. I had a pleasant experience with Marilo, and this is my third time seeing her over the course of about six months. I've had balayage twice and my hair cut three times. I think she's a perfectionist that takes her craft seriously and is sincere and dedicated to making sure clients have healthy, vibrant hair! I can understand that some folks may not understand her personality - she's direct - which I find refreshing and welcome. I want someone to tell me the truth about what will and will not work on my hair and also how to bring it into a healthy condition. I came in very nervous because I have long, virgin hair. I invest a LOT into taking good care of my hair, and that's why I came here. She was very through with me because I asked for a ombré like balayage with very few top highlights AND NOT BLONDE. I left with this hair, and I'm so satisfied. I was so scared of leaving blonde, or with damage, but there is none. My hair somehow feels softer than before. I definitely recommend her if you want something very subtle and natural. read more

I'll start out by establishing that Mariló has been my hair stylist for 4 years. I had moved to Arizona 5 years ago and had to part ways with a fantastic hairstylist in Chicago whom I saw exactly 10 years. I don't hop around, when I find quality, I stay with quality. My first hair dresser in AZ ruined my hair in one year's time - something I had never experienced before! I was desperate to find a quality hair dresser. I found that many American (I'm from a country in Europe) stylists either do not know or do not care to cut your hair well. Fast forward, I chose to try Marilo because I could tell from her work that she was immaculate in her cutting skills. Then I learned she was from Spain and that perked my interest even more, knowing European quality... Marilo didn't disappoint and immediately told me that it would take about 12 months for my hair to get healthy again. My cut and partial highlights looked night and day from what I received the year prior. In four years, there has not been one time where I felt she didn't continue to exert the same effort and detail as on my first appointment. She always goes the extra mile and will give you her honest suggestions. I always get a partial highlight and cut. We were able to get the battery replaced and were on the road again soon, but I was touched by Marila's thoughtful offer to help! Now that I don't work at Yelp, I'm able to leave a review. I went about 2 years ago, when I still worked at yelp, so I obviously couldn't leave reviews. I booked my first appointment with Marilo and everything went fine, until I said I worked at Yelp. She then turned the whole appointment into talking about every single review she's ever gotten. She talked SO much crap about clients who gave her a bad review. All she did was talk about her reviews and how bad the clients were. I listened and nodded along. She also told me my hair was way too dry and insulted the color I had in it before. It was incredibly unprofessional. I scheduled another appointment with her, because she did give me a great haircut, but the day of my appointment, I ran into car troubles and I was unable to come. I'm well aware of last minute cancellations and how it's inconvenient. I texted and asked if we could reschedule and offered to pay more. Marilo was very rude about the whole situation and told me no. I was fine with that. What I wasn't fine with, was her calling me 3 times after, her sending me a DM on instagram with a video of someone getting their haircut and her saying, "Good thing I could fill your appointment." It was so strange and so unprofessional. Now, here's the worst thing. I came into work Monday with a bad feeling about how it was handled with her. I checked her Yelp account and saw that she had already called customer service and LIED to them, saying that I called in and threatened her and was asking for discounts because I worked at Yelp, which was ENTIRELY NOT TRUE. Her behavior was that of a crazy person. I had to call my director and explain that this was not true at all. Thankfully, he believed me. Disrespectful towards long term clients. I have been going to her for years to get blonde highlights and I absolutely loved my hair everytime. I decided to get my hair colored brown just to change it up a bit, but went somewhere else so I can get in quicker and she was more of my "blonde highlights" go to person anyway. After I had brown for a little while I asked to set up an appt with her to get highlights again. She refused to see me at first since I went somewhere else and had gone brown. I kept saying I was able to work with whatever she feels is healthy and best for my hair and we can do it slowly over time however she recommends since she's the professional. She was very rude to me over text saying my hair looks damaged and dry and just the tone of voice was very uncalled for, and she still refused to even work with me at all. At that point I felt like I was trying to convince her to do my hair service so I just left it alone. I had gone to her for several years and had dealt with the non-stop talking, and unwarranted rude comments about my personal life because I figured she's probably a good person with no filter and honestly Im a quiet, too easy going of a person who is too nice to everybody. But after this I feel very disrespected and left to find someone who does good highlights again. Very sad. I think she needs to learn a lot about how to treat people, but some people never learn unfortunately. read more

I was going between 2 and 3 stars because she is friendly, got me in right away, and she uses great products. I would NOT recommend her to anyone with long hair. She is NOT good with long hair. I walked in with my hair at my waist and walked out with my hair barely at my shoulders. I told her I did not want much taken off from the length and I even showed her a pic. She still failed to follow what I wanted, I can only assume it is because she is not experienced with long hair. I wanted to cry. Very disappointing. I dislike my hair soooo much! I wish I had never gone to her. I miss my long hair! I wanted to run out of there. I was in such shock I didn't know what to do or say. I have not had my hair this short in decades. I've been going to Marilo for a couple years now and couldn't be happier! She always knows the perfect cut for my face. I tended to keep my hair long and with lots of layers prior to going to her but in pictures it's never flattering. My hair is super fine and my neck is long so my neck always ends up looking even longer when my hair goes significantly past my shoulders. She whips me back into shape every time I see her. The cut is always so flattering for my proportions, beautifully done, and I appreciate her no nonsense approach. She will tell you if what you are requesting won't work for you. Marilou was such a sweet and spunky lady -- and she's absolutely GORGEOUS and very stylish too. I love her chic style, and really enjoyed our chat. If I were rating based on how friendly and personable she was as a person, definitely 5 stars. However, I'm grading based on hair, and unfortunately I'm very picky when it comes to hair (so please don't take any of this personally). Pros - Very Responsive/Professional - Marilou was very responsive, and squeezed me in last minute. She even went into her salon early morning at 8am for me. - Consultation - I loved how she gave a quick consultation, and asked about my best hair experience and just listened to what I wanted and liked. I also liked how she did an analysis of my hair, and shape of my face to make sure haircut matched my face. - Decor/Location - The decor of her place is very clean and refreshing. It fits her stylish personality. Also, loved the pictures of sweet Lola. - Styling Hair - I love how she styled my hair after the cut, and loved how she framed my bangs to fit my face. I felt like I was ready to go to a party. :) - Marilou!!! - She's such a nice and amazing woman, someone I only met for an hour but really respect her classiness. Cons - Price - It's definitely on the pricier side, was expecting $45, ended up $75 ... but it was nice of her to give me a first timer 10% discount. I live in Washington DC, so was expecting haircuts to be cheaper in Arizona. - Days Later - I'm picky with hair stylists because I'm a low maintenance hair person (if that makes sense). I demand a lot from a haircut, color, style -- so that I don't have to do much to maintain it. The hair looked great first day, but looked more like a trim after I washed. Darn it! This is my second visit to Salon Lola with Marilo. She amazes me with her creative style that lets my hair become its best. Each visit educates me about my own hair, what will make it happy, what won't. I have almost gone full circle from less natural color and drying hair products to natural colors and using nutrient rich products. One more session should have the old hair completely removed. After sharing some photos, she confirmed that a subtle balayage could be done on my dark brown hair. She is very honest and will let you know what is really best for your type hair. Her salon is comfortable, pleasantly decorated, private, no noise or unpleasant smells from a room full of customers. When you have an appointment she is serving you alone, no double booking. She is passionate about her calling as a stylist. She keeps updated on the latest and greatest trends from workshops around the country. She uses I think the best of products. I decided to make an appointment with Marilo based on the rave reviews that she's had on Yelp - and I am so glad I did! There was actually a scheduling snafu when I arrived. Another customer thought she had booked an appointment at the same time. Marilo handled the situation professionally, even offering the other customer a discount to reschedule for later in the week. And even though it really did seem that it was user error (I mean, I got my email and text confirming my appointment, but the other customer did not), Marilo was extremely gracious about it. Marilo was able to listen to what I was looking for, but she also offered honest, helpful insight on what would work with my personal hair and texture. You can tell she has a great passion for making people beautiful, and that's exactly what you want from your hair stylist. I've paid as much (if not more) for haircuts at other salons, and while they weren't bad, Marilo really took the time to get my cut just right. I do not post reviews a lot but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to praise Marilo! I came to her with the single worst haircut (botch job) I've ever had. I have extremely curly hair and the haircut I got before made me look like a Christmas tree. I felt so embarrassed to ever have my hair down. I was sick to death of other hair stylists claiming they know how to cut curly hair. Marilo assured me that she in fact DID know how. She told me she just got back from a class in NY specifically on how to style and cut curly hair. I could cry. She didn't just quickly chop my hair and send me on my way. I've now been back to Salon Lola a couple times - first for balayge and a haircut, and then most recently for a color refresh and trim - and I LOVE my hair! She helped explain to me how her technique with French balayage looks so much more natural than the foil balayage that I had gotten before, and was honest in helping me understand the best cut and style for my face and hair type.
