I absolutely LOVE this place, and I owe that all to Lisa McLaren. She is amazing...I have never had so many compliments on my hair. She is always willing and excited to try new things when I am up for it, yet she's awesome about the "just a trim" days too. She completely understands what my hair will do and what I won't, and always has a nice long conversation whenever I want to do something that she thinks might not work the way I think it will (i.e. I have a terrible cowlick in the front, yet am always yearning for short bangs!). I love her, I am always so excited the week before my appointment, and I would NEVER go anywhere else in the city. I went to this salon based on the advice of two coworkers who frequent Salon Marc Harris. Granted, they have different hair texture than my own but their haircuts have looked nice/normal consistently for the last two years that I've worked with them. I went to their stylist, Lisa, and I'm never going back to her or this salon again. I brought in three pictures of a really simple, straight-forward layered haircut. Lisa said that these pictures were great because they were all actually pictures of the same haircut whereas previous clients brought in pictures of different/varying styles that would not have worked on one haircut. I asked for 2" off, she held up 2" to confirm and then she proceeded to lop off about 3.5". I asked for a little of the bulk in the back to be taken off and she layered over half of the hair on my head. My hair now looks like a trailer trash Fraggle who escaped from an insane asylum. It is way more layered and a lot shorter than what I had wanted (and told her and showed her from the pictures I provided). She also blew out my hair with a round brush and I walked out of there with gigantic, Texas hair. Lisa is probably OK if you have thin/fine hair but word to the wise for ladies with thick, coarse hair like my own (especially Asian women, beware of Lisa). She probably realized that my hair was not doing what she wanted about halfway through the cut so she just kept cutting and cutting. it's hard to see what's going on when your hair is wet so I didn't notice the tragedy until she started drying it. By then it was far too late to stop her. I firmly believe I communicated what I wanted clearly and I even provided visual aids but this stylist just went her own way and in the end, she lost a potential client. Also, it's worth nothing that a shady character came out from the back and tried to sell a waiting client a lone $50 cigar floating around in a Ziploc bag that has seen better days. When the client refused the cigar, the seller skulked back to the rear of the salon. What kind of salon even does that?! read more

I always get compliments after a visit: color and cut are fabulous. She's an artist with a unique style all her own. A stylist that understands that no one wants to look like everybody else. Was totally expecting a snobby Newbury Street experience. Nope! Everyone was super friendly, including the receptionist (who I want to befriend, would that be wierd?), shampoo person, and stylist (Timmy). Smells amazing in there--no hint of perm-ish chemicals--delicious Oribe and Kerastase, mmm. Prices reasonable (for Newbury Street anyway...) One star off for a very lame magazine selection and for my hair being five inches shorter than I asked for--but said hair does look great. read more

Unfortunately my review isn't for any form of hair care, but just the experience attempting to make an appointment. I called earlier today, inquiring the deals I saw online for their "salon week" packages, and after being put on hold for a solid 5 minutes, the women said that my question would require her to ask her supervisor and it would probably be easier for both of us if I give her my number so she could call me back. Made sense to me, except I never received a call back.... The only reason I don't give Marc Harris 1 star is because for all I know my highlight and cut would have been beautiful, but I wont go to a place that doesn't respect my time before I even step in the door. There are enough cookie cutter Newbury salons that are much more willing to give better first impressions. read more

I went here last week to get my hair cut, and although I'm happy my hair, nothing about this salon or the cut set it apart from my usual (and cheaper) neighborhood place. My stylist, Krista, is awesome and very talented, but the cut ($55) plus tips for her and the shampoo girl worked out to $70, which is about $30 more than I pay for the exact same cut at a salon right up the street from me in Neponset. The overall experience was nice enough, but I guess I'm just too cheap to fork over that much extra money just for an address on Newbury Street. read more

I have searched for years for someone who could just once give me a cut I would like. Well, Yesi not only gave me a cut I liked, but one I loved and still love. I have been going there for over two years now and would never change. Paula did my hair while Yesi was out on maternity leave and she is an absolute sweetheart. I loved what she did too. I have watched just about everyone do hair there and I can't find a bad stylist. Cant believe I havent yelped about this place! Believe the hype! very friendly staff. I love Claudia. She is so sweet and I like the fact that she dry cuts! Is it strange that I live in Baltimore but have been here twice for my hair appointments? Nope. That $30 included an invigorating head massage while I was getting my hair washed, hair advice (apparently hair should only be shampooed 2-3 times a week and she recommended using a special cleansing shampoo once a week that ended up working fabulously) and a very chic hairdo. Not living in Boston anymore I've become quite dependent on Yelp to find everything when I'm in town. This past weekend I was up just for a few days and desperately needed my hair done so luckily I found these reviews. The Back Bay salon was wonderful (and affordable). They were very accomodating w/ fitting me in and my stylist went above and beyond by not only doing my cut and color but styled it for me in the end so I could see how to do it on my own...typically most don't do that - they're in a rush to get you in and out. Salon definitely lived up to its expectations (and reviews)...highly suggest it. Very affordable as well!!! (don't hear that often on Newbury Street) read more

I've searched my entire life (I know that sounds exaggerated but I really have) for a stylist that gets IT. I finally found her. Her name is Stephanie and she works at B&B Color Studio in Princeton, NJ. I was so, so, so very happy to have found her. We were like soulmates. She doesn't know this but we were. I couldn't say enough good things about her after my first visit. It was too good to be true. I soon found out that it WAS too good to be true. I learned a few days after my affair with Stephanie that I'd have to move to Boston for work. Before I could think about the fact that I have no family or friends or any other connections in Boston, it occurred to me that I would have to leave Stephanie. I was devastated. I am devastated. What was I going to do? Fast forward, two months. I moved to Boston and discovered yelp. Fear not, Salon Marc Harris had fabulous reviews, which put a smile on my face with visions of Stephanie. Could this be true? Would I find another fabulous stylist? I made an appointment and arrived early. In the elevator up to the salon, I had an uneasy feeling. The elevator was small, cramped, uncomfortable. I should have listened to my gut. I was totally unimpressed. My haircut and color were not what I was expecting for $180 + tip, both were mediocre at best. I specifically asked to have my trimmed and was horrified to find that the stylist had decided to cut over two inches. To top it off, my stylist cut my bangs and they were awkward. The color was OK but certainly wasn't anything special. As I waited for the color to set, the stylist saw other clients (which I realize is standard operating procedure) but she saw multiple clients, which made me feel not so special. The salon itself is somewhat uninviting with its high ceilings and as someone else put it, warehouse-y feeling. I might just have to go back to Stephanie for another tryst. This led me to several months of bouncing from salon to salon in search of the ever elusive perfect cut. I finally found it at Salon Marc Harris. The location and atmosphere of the salon are fabulous; check out the massage chairs as you get washed... so comfy. I've been here twice for a cut with Lisa. Lisa is fun, bubbly, and really knows her way around a pair of scissors. She listened as I explained what I wanted and then created it with no errors. She definitely gets 5 stars. Modern and chic interior. Great service, with a friendly staff. The shampoo chairs are comfy and massage you like a pedicure chair! Leaving there I received several compliments on my hair which my stylist managed to look full of volume and thick when it's actually pretty fine. I have been to Salon Marc Harris on numerous occasions and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience there! I was last there yesterday, I desperately needed a trim and also had my hair colored from brownish red to an ashy blond with blond highlights. Marc did a wonderful job, like always, with trimming and blow-drying my hair...by the time he was done my hair looked full with lots of volume; which is great especially if your hair is as thin as mine! Julie also did a wonderful job at coloring my hair. Red is not an easy color to remove but she did a great job at toning it down and did exactly what i requested in regards to the type of blond i wanted for highlights, which is rare compared to other places I've been in the past. I have also been a client of Claudia and she is great!!! She did a fabulous job with my hair when I wanted a darker shade. i received many compliments on how shinny and healthy it looked. She also used and recommended hair products to define my curls without weighting down or stiffing my hair, that i still currently use. Overall the staff is very polite and friendly, the studio has a great decor that's inviting and its very spacious, which i love. And i cannot forget to mention that I absolutely LOVE the massage chair they have when they wash your hair!!! I strongly recommend Salon Marc Harris to anyone who is looking or willing to try someplace new. you wont be disappointed! read more

I first saw her when I was cutting off a huge chunk of hair to donate, and she totally transformed my hair! I've been with her for years and every time I see her, we take my hair style in a slightly different direction. I'm happy every. single. time. The entire experience is very high end - from the atmosphere to the service to the products. I always recommend the salon to my friends who are new to town. I am extremely picky when it comes to my hair--like I moved to the Boston area more than twenty years ago and was still driving eight-plus hours back to my old hairdresser in Pennsylvania because I hadn't found just the right hairdresser yet. Then I found Claudia at Marc Harris in Boston maybe 6 or so years ago and she's been cutting my hair ever since. Claudia is fantastic. I always feel like she listens to me and pays attention to my style. Her suggestions are always on point, and she gives me a terrific haircut every time. She's an educator, and there's not much that feels better than having another stylist come by raving about how great your hair looks and asking to watch the master (Claudia) at work. I can honestly say she's never given me a bad haircut, and when I decided I wanted some fun color, she combined my ideas with her own, and with her knowledge and skill the results made me very happy. If I ever didn't want to go with one of her suggestions, she'd stick to my instructions, but I usually just trust her judgment and have not been disappointed. She's stuck with me now! read more

I have spent a majority of my life in search of a stylist who had even an inkling of an idea of what to do with my hair...as it's thick and curly with a rather uncontrollable wave to it if there ever came a day I was brave enough to take it on with a flat iron. At any rate, I usually come out of a salon disappointed. Until I discovered through a recommendation two years ago Marc Harris. I have seen Lisa McLaren to help me "manage" my hair ever since. She's incredible. I've come to a point where I know I can walk in and just ask her to do what she thinks would look best... Not only has she sent me away with an incredible cut and style each time I come through, she has done wonders in teaching me how to style my curls...which until then, I was pretty much clueless on what to do beyond glop on a bunch of hair gel and hope for the best. The Marc Harris brand styling cream is also a god send. I don't know what I would do without it--straight or curly. I DO know that when I go home to visit my mother, I either have to bring her a bottle of her own or be prepared to hide mine. read more

I have been going to Yesi for five years for cut and color. She is very professional and a great listener. She just "gets" what you are looking for. She specializes in thick and curly hair, none of which I have, and she still does a fabulous job. She doesn't yak away the whole time which I like. It always makes me nervous when stylists do this because how can they pay attention? The massaging chairs are awesome as are the shampoo ladies. They really spend time on you here. Expensive but worth it! I have full long hair but the strands are thin so it goes flat in 2 seconds. Rogue layered it so I have volume and I can finally style it now. I received a cut, color with highlighting. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I can't remember exactly what I paid but it was less than $300 with tip. Overall great salon. If you're new to the Boston area and want to treat yourself to a nice haircut/color on Newbury street- look no further! I wish they were a bit more open about their pricing. I have gasped a bit at the end when I go to pay, but hey- it's Newbury street. The stylists are all great. They sit you down and take the time to talk about what look you're going for. The seats are massaging and they typically give you a great scalp massage too. My one big complaint- booking an appointment has been like pulling teeth. There is one receptionist in particular that is so difficult to work with. I have literally hung up at times if I call to book an appointment and get her on the phone. I have waited 2 months at some points for appointments, which is just plain insane when you're due for color. Best kept secret: Anthony on Sundays. Most recently, I called on a Saturday and got an appointment with him the very next day! He was super cool and I got a great haircut. I definitely recommend seeing him if you can! read more

This is my first review on Yelp and I have to say that Salon Marc Harris is great. They make you feel very welcome when you walk in and Lauren is AMAZING! I get compliments on my color and cut constantly. The way she cuts my hair it still looks good when I dont blowdry/style it! Even when the cut has grown out between visits!
