I recently purchased a $40 YouSwoop for $110 worth of services to Salon Moka. After a quick search of their Yelp reviews it looked that Rondeann was the girl to go to for curly haired blowouts. Unfortunately, when I called to make an appointment I learned that Rondeann has not worked for Salon Moka for a few years now, which explains why no one has written a review for her since 2008. The stylist who answered the phone, Kelly, assured me that she'd be able to get my unruly curls straight. She even offered to come in the very next day, which just happened to be her day off. Seriously, so sweet! While Kelly was washing my hair I mentioned I was planning to use a YouSwoop. Kelly informed me that I had to use the entire $110 at once so it didn't really make sense to use it on a $40 blowout. I did see a note on the certificate that you can't combine YouSwoops, but I figured that meant I couldn't use multiple certificates (not use 1 certificate a few different times). Regardless I decided to save the YouSwoop for another time when I could come back for a blowout and a much needed prenatal massage. Kelly was true to her word and had no problem getting my hair straight. She was also very fun to chat with and the 45 minutes I spent in her chair flew by. Salon Moka isn't the fanciest of salons, but nice. And it was super easy to find a parking spot right outside on this Tuesday afternoon. I have been to this place several times and always had my hair done with Tanille. She is a very sweet and knowledgeable professional, I've had two cuts with her and now the Global Keratin treatment. I took before and after pictures but results will just show when I wash my hair on Sunday (need two days of total flat hair!) and I will be back here with more pics. The reason I decided to do this treatment is because my hair is ubber frizzy and gets out of control when curly. I never really wear it curly, but having to blow dry and flat iron it almost everyday is tiring. Price is expensive (depending on your hair you'll have to drop $200+), but I'm hoping results will be great. The treatment took about 2 hrs and 30 minutes to be completed. It is basically cleaning your hair from all the product residue and then applying the keratin on every strand, blowing dry and then flattening it. The keratin will sort of coat your hair and seal the breakage, giving shine and shape. This is not a permanent treatment, keratin will wear off within 3-5 months, depending on how you treat your hair. This is an awesome solution for people who don't want harsh chemicals in the hair, such as relaxers, or the Brazilian blow out. I should have done this before going to my trip to Punta Cana. I avoided pictures during the whole time while on vacation, because I basically looked like a savage due very humid weather -- My hair was in complete despair at that trip! I am already Francisca regular customer for waxing, I am planning to go and try their massages too! They also have hair dressers specialized in ethnic hair, and someone for manicure and pedicure (never tried tho). We booked the massage appointments months ago, and had to reschedule several times due to the inability of the salon to have 2 massage therapists on hand to do couples massages. Finally the day came and we got our massages. Our massage, Itsuko, is very nice, but painful. I realized that i'd prefer to be relaxed during massages, instead of wishing that this massage need to end sooner, or hoping that i won't be in any more pain. I think it's the massage style, it is just personal preference. I also noticed that the room was not sound proof at all. I could hear people walking and talking during the massage. I arrived early for the massage, and only received a 40 minute massage (started 10 minutes late and ended 10 minutes early). However, I went to the front to pay, and read the little price list taped on the wall next to the register. It stated $85 for 1hour massage, and I had a youswoop for $110. Therefore I could have received a 90 minute massage. I asked Masa, the owner, if I could get 30 minutes more massage, or maybe as credit for something else. He refused, saying that it was to be used in one visit. I do understand what he was saying, but WHY DID HE NOT MENTION THIS DURING OUR NUMEROUS CONVERSATIONS IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS????? "oh BTW, your massage is only $85 per hour, and since you have a $110 coupon, you can get an 1 1/2 hour massage instead." I am just annoyed that he did not care about providing the best experience possible, and I felt cheated in general for paying $40 for 40 minutes massage. read more

I'm going to echo Colleen C -- Eia gave me the hands down best massage I have ever gotten in my life. I had to give her a hug afterward. She even went twenty or thirty minutes overtime, stretching my back as I requested. She has a calm, happy personality. When I told her the last massage I got wasn't so great, she asked me why. I told her that it lacked flow (and stopped fifteen minutes early, but I didn't mention that), but that "different strokes for different folks"... She laughed and said, "This is the SERVICE industry", and right then I knew I was with someone who "gets it." I love giving massages and I have also been in the service industry for many years -- I have always offered customers complete, warm customer service, because it makes me happy. Ea understands that on a fundamental level. I recently checked out the steam room and it is lovely... Comes free with the full price massage. Eia's room in the back, private, comfortable and quiet. She uses hot towels and and made sure my skin was never exposed to chilly air. Salon Moka is a good place with good vibes. It is not a "spa"... it is a hair salon with a massage area in the back. So I purchased a $40 YouSwoop for $110 worth of services at Salon Moka. I had never been here before but thought the coupon was a great deal so I was willing to give it a shot. I decide to pamper myself for my b-day and book a 45 minute reflexology massage and a cut/dye job following. Parking was a breeze and I found a spot right out front (there is a meter box you must pay). I walk in to the tiny salon and am greeted by a friendly receptionist and am offered water or tea while I wait. I am then introduced to my masseuse (I believe her name was Tiffany) who was also nice but looked like she had a rough night prior and was wishing she was still in bed. This is where I start questioning if I should have gone for a medi-pani instead of the massage. The massage itself was good and she applied the right amount of pressure and I felt that my whole body was given equal treatment but that's where the compliments end. The room was darkened but was so very, very chilly and noisy to the point that I could never fully relax. Not only could I hear people walking past but I could hear the patrons and stylists chit chatting and even worse was the loud rolling chair she used on the creaking hard wood floors to navigate around me. So I finish with Tiffany and am brought back into the seating area and told my stylist (Evana?) will be with me shortly. Oh and I arrived at 2 o'clock for my 45 minute massage and it's now 2:55PM. I end up waiting until 3:25 before I tell them that I will just pay for my massage and leave (mind you they have called her on her cell and she claimed she was just a minute away 15 minutes before that). The owner (Masa?) leaves his client to console me and is willing to get me started and states that it should only take 1.5 hours for my cut and dye job. I reluctantly agree and get in the chair. He was beyond nice and helped calm my frustrations, almost making everything seem ok...that is until my stylist finally comes in at 3:45! WHAT?!?!!? SO I WAS EXPECTED TO WAIT 50 MINUTES THEN?!?! So I get passed to her and from that point forward it's all down hill. She didn't even know I was in for a dye even though it was noted (maybe if she got to work on time someone could fill her in on what her clients want). She was painfully slow and at one point I thought about getting up after she washed the dye out and leaving. 2.5 HOURS LATER I am finally finished. I have a A-OK cut and dye but I would have gotten the same thing or better at a Borics for half the money! I am struggling to give this place 2 stars but will since all the other clients seemed thrilled with their services/stylists and I did like my massage therapist (if you are out there Tiffany message me and maybe we can set up arrangements outside of the salon!) I went to Salon Moka because I bought a youswoop. I decided that I wanted a perm, as 80s as it sounds. I called and spoke with a stylist named Kelly. She said that I could come in for a consultation if I wanted so I could show her what I wanted and see if it was possible in my hair. I went in that night and she was really helpful and honest about what she thought would and would not work in my hair. I made an appointment for the next day. I got a hair cut and then, because I was worried about really tight curls, she did my perm using two big rollers--one was a perm roller and one was bigger. I told her that I'd rather have it fall out after a month than have tight curls and she said that she was thinking about what I said and that she was going to use the bigger two, which I totally appreciated. It took about 1.5-2 hours total for the hair cut and perm and then afterward, she put in under the dryer so I'd see how it would look drying natural. I loved it. It was exactly what I was hoping for and Kelly was so friendly and professional. I would definitely go back, even if it is just for a hair cut. I'd also recommend this place. read more

INCREDIBLE MASSAGE. I'm an athlete. I've had countless massage therapists over the last 15 years. Some were good, others were meh and a handful great. So when i stopped into Moka it wasn't my first rodeo...but man, am i glad I did. Teresa is the best massage therapist I've ever had. She knows the human body better than anyone I know. She uses a range of techniques that manipulate the soft tissues of the body. It feels amazing. The fact that she's at Salon Moka is a bit of a fluke because under other circumstances she'd be somewhere else charging 4x what she does now. She's that good. Really, really good. I went here for my birthday pampering, and sprung for the Chibi-Ko Spa package. I opted for the haircut rather than the massage. I was very satisfied with pretty much all of my services. They started me off with the waxing, which is a good thing to get out of the way during your pampering session. It was quick but thorough - what else do you need? They did both my eyebrows and lip, as both were included in my package. That in and of itself is a good deal. My pedicure was next. I should mention that the nail person was not scheduled to work that day, and when I called and made an appointment, she came in especially for me. The mark of great service! The pedicure was perfectly good, nothing special, nothing missing. Next, my haircut. I wish I could remember the name of the stylist, because she did a really great job. I went for a new look I hadn't tried before, and she was good about working with me during the cut to make sure I was getting what I wanted. It took me a couple of days to get used to it, but now I love it! My only criticism is that she should have mentioned some products to me that I might be requiring with the new 'do. I know, I know, I hate when stylists try to sell me stuff, but I actually did need some sculpting creme to make it work, so it would have been good if she had mentioned that. UPDATE: The stylist's name is Kelly, and she contacted me with product suggestions. So all my needs are met now! Finally, my manicure. At this point, I had been at the salon for about 2 hours. It's a little bit longer than I was counting on, but I wasn't really left waiting for more than 5 minutes at any time. The manicure was fine, but she didn't trim back my cuticles as much as I would have hoped (I should have said something, but didn't). As a result, my neat and tidy nails didn't stay that way for very long. Overall, I had a positive experience. I would probably consider going there for another haircut, but there was nothing particularly special about the other services, so I probably wouldn't go back specifically for a pedicure, manicure or waxing. There is easy street parking in the area, most of it is metered. The "spa" is more like a salon with a back room for aesthetic stuff. Maggie was great. My face was ANGRY! I was in desperate need because for some reason, I just cant held but pick, poke, prod, etc when my face gets angry. She did a great job at minimizing the damage that I had already done. She did a great analysis of my skin. Not to mention, she went over what was going on. The spa like experience was fine. Not fantastic. She puts on some music but you can still hear what was going on outside, but that doesnt bother me. Like I have stated before, I really love a great facial on the cheap and easy and this was all of that. I loved it though, truly...she did a fantastic job and totally affordable. I was pleasantly surprised by Salon Moka. I was expecting a super cold room and a non-relaxing atmosphere but when I walked into the room, it was actually super warm. Some might have said it was too hot but for me, it was perfect. The massage table also had a heating pad which I loved - it was hard for me not to fall asleep during the massage. Emily did my massage and she was wonderful! She used just the right amount of pressure and even massaged my ears (my favorite!). I didn't feel like she concentrated too much on one area but spent even time on each body part. Obviously she spent just a little more time on areas that were more tense but it was perfect. My only complaint and the reason I did not give them 5 stars was because of the chatter outside my room. It wasn't throughout the entire massage, only towards the end but they were so loud - it was really distracting and I can hear their conversation very clearly as if I was standing right next to them participating. I would suggest to let staff know when they have clients in the massage rooms so that people can speak softer or at least take their conversation somewhere else. Overall, I would recommend this place. I went with a Groupon and I would go again at full price for Emily's massage! read more

Don't get the package deal! Arriving at Moka after a really stressful day I was extremely disappointed to find out that they didn't even have a receipt of the package that I had bought a week ago! So basically "if you don't find the receipt there's nothing we can do" I had bought a package to get a hair cut, manicure,massage, and because I didn't have the receipt the owner told me I would have to buy the hair cut again and if I found the receipt he would refund it... Otherwise if I came back the hair cut on the package would not be rewarded.Which means I would be paying the package price plus whatever the haircut was! I recently had a Signature Facial ($85 / 1 hour) with Maggie. First and foremost -- Maggie is awesome. The appointment started a few minutes later due to a previous client coming late, but my appointment also ended a few minutes later, so my time wasn't cut short which was really appreciated and conscientious of her. Her bedside manner is excellent, and she certainly knows her stuff. She made me feel comfortable and really seemed to understand my skin needs. My face felt great afterward -- not too oily and not too dry. She hit the nail on the head and revived my belief in run-of-the-mill facials (I usually prefer some harder core treatment, i.e. microderm, with my facials). One star off for the other staff members sitting around ( I guess there were no customers at that time) and talking loudly. Sure, they seemed nice, but it kind of ruined the "relaxing" aspect of the facial. Boo. Overall, I'm not sure if I'll return or not. I know, right -- 4 star review but no return?! Wha?!?!?! I gave Salon Moka a try, but I prefer another establishment better. I would still recommend Maggie if you're going to get a facial here though! read more

I've walked in here 3 times for quick hair cuts. Each time I've had a different stylist and have always LOVED the results! First two times I got some long layers -- simple request and was expecting something very basic, but I walked out looking modern and awesome! Last time I decided to change things up with a shorter cut. I was nervous about it (have had long hair for 15 years), but they did a great job and made sure I ended up with just what I wanted. My stylist also made lots of suggestions about what was in style and what would look best with my face. I also went to Salon Moka during the pretty city special. I had heard good things so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, they were not met. I arrived 5 minutes early for my 6 o'clock appointment and was not taken to my massage room until 6:35. I thought about getting up to leave the place, but I had made the trek over there from work and would have just been pissed off. I had to stand in the doorway of the room watching while the masseuse ran around changing the dirty sheets on the massage table from the previous client. It felt pretty warm when I first got settled in, but then the room temperature drastically dropped. Getting a massage when you are cold is completely worthless bc you are tensed up the whole time. Instead of dealing with the heat issue (i mean, i had goosebumps) the masseuse just threw a blanket over the part of me that wasn't being massaged. As far as the actual massage, I've definitely had better, but the cold probably had a lot to do with it. read more

I started going to this hair salon about 2 years ago and I was so happy that I finally found a place where I could go to consistently for the following reasons. 1) My hair stylist Masa is great and he knows exactly how to cut and color my hair the way I want it. He would listen to you patiently and understand your needs perfectly. Masa is also the owner. He definitely has the most amazing hair cutting and coloring skills! I had different hair stylists before and they were never able to do as good of a job. 2) The customer service is fantastic My stylist Masa is always friendly and happy to be around with. I like having conversations with him. The other stylist Kelly is also extremely nice and helpful. They make you feel welcome and the atmosphere there is professional but laid back. It's a comfortable setting and you are always treated well with green tea or coffee. I highly recommend this place because obviously they are great hair stylists, the price is also reasonable, and they treat like valued customers. I never had to try out another deal, because after a cut & color with Kelly, I became a loyal customer! I've been coming back now for well over a year. I always take too long to get around to making appointments (much like this overdue Yelp review), but Kelly does such a great cut, that even when I'm waaaay behind, I can still make my hair look good (this is a major accomplishment with shorter hair!). She has great ideas for varying up your cut & color, and quickly earned the "do whatever you want, I know it will be fabulous!" trust factor. I've had my hair cut & foiled/colored at Salon Moka twice. I was not pleased with my first experience (hair cut was uneven), but decided to give it another try and requested Masa. What a pro! There is a reason he's the owner! I explained that I wanted to go more blonde with my color and after giving me the pros and cons, I decided to still take the plunge and am not looking back! He also got my cut back inline. I've heard the words "you look beautiful" three times in the past four days and not by loved ones....what more reassurance could a girl ask for! I must admit that I am writing this review for Kelly at Salon Moka. She is just an amazing stylist. I went to her at her old salon on a fluke and became a believer. I didn't know exactly what I wanted, just something to make my hair style less "boring." She totally went with it and gave me one of the best cuts of my life. I keep going back and every time, a great cut, replete with compliments the next day. I even had her do my hair for friends' wedding and got complimented all night. A friend of mine loved my hair so much, she started going to Kelly. And even though she recently move to LA, every time my friend is in town, she tries to squeeze in an appointment. The salon is great and the entire staff couldn't be nicer. Kelly is truly talented and I can't recommend her enough!! I've been to Salon Moka twice now for express facials (30 instead of 60 mins). Both times I was able to schedule an appointment easily. My aestetician was Maggie, who is knowledgable and friendly, without being overly talkative. The rooms for the facials and massages are in back of the salon, so it is nice and quiet. There was relaxing music playing in my room. Maggie did a great job and made it a nice experience. She really knows her stuff. She did not try to sell me anything and gave me a 20% coupon for my next visit. The prices at Moka are very reasonable and I'd love to come back to try their massages. read more

I am not very hairy and was getting not-too-private areas done; she gushed/raved about clients who were "so hairy it's gross," said she was uncomfortable doing brazilians but her boss said she had to in order to work there. Masa is amazing, and is the first hair stylist in the many years I've been going to fancy-ish salons that I've consistently wanted to return to. The whole staff is friendly, offering you water and tea when you get there. Masa is truly good at what he does, and is the only stylist that styles my hair perfectly in addition to giving me a good cut. Other places I've gone to always have me leaving and immediately wanting to go home and wash out the over-styled mess they've left me with. Not with Masa. I got a certificate for the 4 services here and have had mixed reviews on them. Kelly and Masa are awesome! Both very accomadating and friendly. My massage was good, but ive had better. The manicure was terrible. If you want to sit in a chair with a girl who doesn't speak and wont look at you, has 3 year old polish with little selection, and wont do anything but the bare minimum (filed and polish THATS IT), then go for a manicure but i wouldn't recommend it. I couldn't tell if the service was just bad because I had the package deal? But Kelly was great! I got my cut and color with her and shes awesome. Very friendly and sat down with me at the beginning looking through magazines to get a creative take on a bob. She knows that there's more than just traditional cuts that everyone else has. The cut turned out great, but unfortunately the color wasn't that impressive. I've been going to the same colorist forever (who's very expensive and downtown) who always does an amazing job at my color, so maybe i was just comparing them. It wasn't bad but when I want my color done I dont just want my roots touched up I want to have my color revived and brilliant. Overall this place is good for the price, especially with this package deal I got. Well at least Kelly and Masa are good for the price. They were both super accomadating and would recommend them! My sister and two of my friends and I went to Salon Moka to get the express facial. This was my first facial ever and I was VERY happy with the service that they offered. Maggie was the wonderful woman who did our facials and she was just lovely. I saw Rondeann for a cut/color yesterday, love my color and she did a really good blow dry also (I have curly hair that is not easy to blow dry straight). What pushed Salon Moka over the edge for me was the accupressure scalp massage... I almost fell asleep at the shampoo bowl, it was that good. Great prices too! read more

My experience with Salon Moka is quite the saga. I'm new to town and saw Salon Moka on my walk to and from yoga, so I thought to give it a try. What's not to like about kana on the open sign? Unfortunately, my first visit was a nightmare. My stylist - Christine - was running behind and I waited for 1/2 hour. Then the hair cut started. I realize now that what happened was a simple instance of miscommunication. We had different eras of Siouxsie Sioux in mind. I still can't for the life of me though figure out what is so darn hard about cutting a bob or understanding what a bob is especially when your client says "You know - a bob." Needless to say not even yoga cooled me off and I called to cancel my upcoming manicure once I got home. Enter Masa. He has incredible skills. He talked me down and invited me in to fix the hair cut for free. By the time he was done (the cut was not what I asked for in addition to lopsided), I was actually happy. Granted, it was a pixie cut like I wore 10 yrs ago, but it looked good and it was what needed to be done to fix the abomination on my head. Even better, he generously offered me another hair cut on the house. I went back in February and he did a great a job. Also? The manicures are fantastic! I'm a long time (7 years) client of Deeann so I would follow her to Borick's!!!! Salon Moka is LUCKY to have such a talent. She has incredible style and taste. At this point in our relationship I let her do WHATEVER she wants to my hair - -with amazing results. She does fabulous color, cuts and THE BEST blow-outs!!!! I've referred many friends of mine to her and they've become happy clients. I live in Wilmette now and have 3 friends/neighbors who travel in to her! The good: My massage with E'a. She is really talented and if I were to just review the salon based on my massage, it would get 5 stars. I will go back to her without a doubt. I look forward to my next massage! The bad: My facial. I get regular facials by either Liz Quesnelle or Amy at Ruby Room and I guess I'm spoiled. The room was comfortable but the music was AWFUL. The same two annoying "new age" songs kept repeating and by the end of the facial I could only concentrate on that. When I get a facial, I expect the esthetician to stay with me during the facial. The two women listed above give great massages while the mask is working. She left me for about 10+ minutes, listening to those two horrible songs, repeating. I guess it's a personal preference, but I feel if I'm paying for the time, I'd like them to spend it with me. I won't be getting another facial there. Not relaxing at all. I had a coupon from pretty city and wanted to see if there were other great estheticians out there, but I'll stick with the ones I know. read more
