Tamara did such a beautiful job on my hair. So much so that another client at the salon asked me to model my new cut for her stylist! She listened closely to my somewhat vague description of what I wanted, and really did an outstanding job. I once had a great haircut and blowdry here done by Lina. To prepare for a big event I came back this afternoon for a blowout, assigned to a different stylist. For the price of 41$ before tax and tip it was really poorly done. No heat protection used before drying. The stylist used the max heat close on my wet hair and I had to tell her that it burned my face several times. The end result was so disappointing - my hair looked damaged and not at all like the picture I showed to the girl. I could dry my hair better at home. I still left tips as courtesy but won't come back here again. At least not for blow dry. read more

I am extremely picky and wanted to find a great men's hair stylist near my apartment that is located in the Upper West Side. After tying out several salons I discovered Salon Riz and have been going there ever since. Most hair salons cater to women and it is rare to find someone that really knows how to cut men's hair. Mike who is the owner is fabulous and I highly recommend him to everyone. In fact I trusted him so much that I went with his suggestion and allowed him to give me a makeover and totally change the way I styled my hair. As a result people say I look much younger! In addition, my wife liked my haircut so much that she started going there and uses Mackenzie who is one of Mike's excellent stylists for her haircuts and color. You really feel at home the minute you walk in the door and I highly recommend Salon Riz to everyone. By the way, there is a reason why this salon has received so many 5 star reviews so I recommend that you simply ignore the two negative reviews as there are some people that you can never please. I went to Salon Riz for the first time today and had a great experience. The salon is so cute and the staff was very friendly. Lina did a keratin treatment to my hair and she was awesome. Before she started she explained the whole process and what I should do after. We talked the whole time and the process only took about an hour and a half, which is way less than I was expecting. The price was very reasonable and its clear that everyone does quality work there. I will definitely be back! read more

This place. Wow! I'd done my homework and had read all the great reviews, so I made an appointment on a whim. I've had the same stylist for years and I was reluctant to try something new. However, schedules didn't align and I needed a haircut desperately so off I went to Salon Riz. Check in was easy and as soon as I took a seat, the stylist, Chastity, took a look at my mop and kindly informed me that she was not well versed in short (incredibly curly) haircuts. So after a moment, she came back and told me the owner, Mike, would squeeze me in so that I received the right cut. Who does that? Most stylists just power through regardless of skill and the client pays the price. Chastity was honest and communicative and did me a real favor. Mike was a wonder. As a curly head himself, he understood what I wanted and more importantly, needed. Aside from my great cut, I was even more impressed by how Mike made this a teachable moment. In addition to cutting my hair, he spent time talking to me and teaching Chastity about the intricacies of cutting curly hair. It was a masterclass. After decades of some great and some not-so-great haircuts, I've found my new home. I left with exactly what I wanted (I brought a picture) and was in the most caring and skilled hands. Salon Riz is a cute salon with a great staff. The salon is welcoming, warm, and genuine- not pretentious at all, which I love. They always offer you water, tea, or wine and make your experience pleasant. I've been coming to Mackenzie for over a year now and have always been very pleased with my haircut, and they seem to be getting better each time. Additionally, Mackenzie is so nice and I always have a great time chatting with her while I am there. I frequently get compliments on my haircut, which is nice since the prices at Salon Riz are very reasonable. For a 30 minute men's haircut, it is $41, which is a great price, especially since it's an excellent cut. Compare that to when I went to barber shops in the Village charging $28 for a 10 minute hack-job on your hair. The extra $10+ makes a huge difference in the quality of haircut and overall experience. I highly recommend Salon Riz and Mackenzie. It's a great value for a great haircut. And sometimes you might see a celebrity, like the last time I was there and had to try my best not to be obvious that I was excited to be sitting next to a Tony award-winning Broadway star... Be sure to make an appointment. I think they take walk-ins, but it's been very busy lately as their business has picked up since they are a great salon. read more

I discovered Salon Riz when I moved to the UWS over a year ago. I knew no one and walked in after a Google search. The atmosphere is incredibly warm and fun. Don't let that fool you though, the talent level is very high and as high as any very expensive "scene" spa. This one just eliminates the drama. Everyone at Salon Riz gets along and it's a mutually supportive environment of one another and clients. I've gone every three weeks since and been very happy with the results. I had recently gotten my hair done over the holiday break at home to a woman I've always seen. Unfortunately she had medical issues with her wrist, so I'll blame the cheap final product on that. I had a partial foil which turned out to be cheap thick highlights that bled out and left unbleached spots throughout half my hair. I got back to Manhattan yesterday and checked yelp and gave Salon Riz a go they were phenomenal!! I called in the morning and was seen that afternoon. Claudia did a fantastic job toning down the platinum thick highlights and finished fouling the rest of my head. My hair goes below my chest, and in an hour she practically gave me a full foil, and toner and charged me for a partial. Such a good price too. I have been going to see Tom at Salon Riz for about a year now. He is fantastic. To put it into perspective, I've been getting my hair done for 16 years, this is the first time that every time I leave the salon I am completely happy with the color (blonde). And it lasts. It doesn't fade or bronze. I would recommend Tom for color over anyone else in the city. I have also got a cut from him, my hair is not to long to start with and always looks thin at the ends, after this simple cut, my hair looked full and healthy. I had high hopes for this salon because of many positive reviews. Unfortunately, I left with one of my worst hair cut. I had booking with Mike and showed him some photos before we started. I thought he wasn't very helpful or friendly when consulting. He seemed rather in rush and impatient. Besides the service, I was very nervous because he was chopping very fast. My hair cut was done in little over 10mins. Afterwards, my bangs were unevenly chopped and thick-- it was cut too much away from my ear line. I didn't know how bad it was while at the salon but was devastated after coming home because it looked so bad. I pinned up my bangs and wore a headband for two months to grow it out. One of the reasons I booked was that they were nicely reviewed for their service. Although, I had no problem with other staffs I felt that Mike's service wasn't good. read more

Oh my goodness. I saw Claudia for the keratin treatment and today I washed my hair after the brutal three days in New York City swamp weather and I can't deal with how amazing the result is! I have zero frizz, my hair air dried in the most beautiful curls which I was super nervous about losing as I've done keratin in the past and had the super straight hair for months which is pretty but I missed my curly hair. Claudia is the sweetest and super funny and really knows her stuff. The salon is beautiful and they have treats and deliciously flavored water waiting for you with freshly sliced strawberries. Went here a couple times to Teresa. First time ok and then each time it got progressively worse, shorter time in chair, less attention to detail. Over the course of 4 cuts, she got incredibly sloppy. Last haircut was terrible. Went to different place to get it fixed and they couldn't believe the awful cut. Fantastic business. Salon is very cute and staff is friendly and welcoming. I had a haircut with Mike (the owner) who is a master of the scissors. He is also unbelievably efficient - great cut and dry in under half an hour. To boot, pricing is extremely reasonable. I am not time or price sensitive when it comes to my hair so this was an added bonus. I was having a rather angled cut and Mike told me to feel free to come back in a couple of weeks if I needed any tweaking after having played with it for a for a few days. I loved the cut but really felt I was ready to go more dramatic and Mike delivered again with no hesitation at all. Will be back for colour soon - very loyal to my colourist but am really hoping Mike can replicate on my hair what I saw him do for another client. Natural but very vibrant blonde highlights.
