I really loved the front part of my hair, but I had this weird, creepy mullet going on in the back. I was Yelping to try to find a person who can get rid of it ASAP because I couldn't keep it tied up in a ponytail any longer and I didn't want to go to my usual stylist, which would've cost me like $100 including my tip just to get rid of this monstrosity of a tail that was growing in the back of my head. So I found Salon Sophia. She had great reviews and a Yelp deal. Well, I was sold! So I bought the Yelp deal and made an appointment. I found myself in this building that contained small salon spaces. It was quite interesting, but pretty cool. I parked at a meter on the street, but I believe there was parking in the back. I'm pretty sure she asked me if I needed a validation, but don't take my word for it. Anyway, she had a male client and I was just waiting in the hallway because there was a couch that really only sat 1 comfortably and it was taken by the male client's girlfriend. She finished clipping his hair right on time for my appointment. She cleaned up the trimmings and greeted me in. She thanked me for waiting and she sat me in the chair. We did the usual talk about what I wanted to do with my hair and she got started. She shampooed my hair and started cutting the beaver tail. She was polite and kept the conversation going and it wasn't awkward at all. I completely forgot I had the Yelp deal and so I paid. I think I ended up paying $30 with tip. As I was driving away, I got a call from Sophia saying she didn't know I had a Yelp deal and told me I could get a refund or that the next time I came, I could use the Yelp deal. I loved my haircut so I took the latter offer. I'm going in on Wednesday for a bang cutting appointment. She is super accommodating btw because I bugged her today (Labor Day holiday) which is her usual day off and she was able to get me in after work on Wednesday. She's awesome! I'm generally not the kind of girl who pays a lot to get her haircut. Usually if I want a trim and some layers I go to a Fantastic Sam's in the area. But today I was looking for something different - a high class haircut within my budget. I looked to yelp and found Salon Sophia in Sherman Oaks. I gave Sophia 5 stars for several reasons: 1) She knew how to balance conversation. I've had bad experiences with annoyingly talkative hairdressers so most times I'd rather just sit there and get my haircut. But she was the perfect blend of quiet and get to know you. 2) She was flexible. I called her at 5:30 and she made time to see me at 6:30. 3) She was professional. She kept a notebook with her clients information so that she could refer to it later on. I thought it was a great way to keep her clients coming back. 4) She took her time and she was thorough. She checked and double checked that the lengths on each side were even. She made sure to blow dry the layers to check that they looked good. 5) She made no fuss about her yelp deal. I asked about her deal on yelp (which I thought i had to purchase on line) and she told me not to worry. She just charged me the discounted amount at the salon which was a fantastic deal and she let me know that she would charge me the same amount the next time I come in. Sophia was super sweet. I went in and got a quick trim and some hair tinsel. My birthday was that weekend and I wanted to look flawless, and thanks to her my hair was! She was quick but precise. She had a T.V. at her station and we chatted between segments on T.V. which was nice. Sophia was recommended by a friend and I of course would recommend friends to her. The hair tinsel is AMAZING if you have never heard of this or gotten it down it's quick, simple, and fun. It add some sparkle to you hair and everyone has been complementing me on it. I was in desperate need of a trim...split ends were taking over my head of hair! Just so happened, Tippr was offering a deal too good to pass up for Salon Sophia so I snatched it up. Making an appointment was quick and easy. She was able to see me that Saturday morning at the time I requested. I was so happy when I realized she was located literally half a block from my work. I could walk there in 5 minutes...Score! I made a mental note of that in case I ever wanted a lunchtime trim. The place was easy to find and what I loved about it is that it's kind of a "marketplace" of stylists where each stylist has their own studio. The concept is new to me and I thought it was so cool. Sophia is now my hair stylist for as long as I live in L.A! I've been to three other stylists since I moved here and had problems with all of them. This has never happened to me in any other city. (My husband's job moves us around and I guess I got lucky up until L.A.) It was so refreshing to meet Sophia. She has a great personality and is wonderful at what she does. I came across Salon Sophia on Yelp not too long ago. Glad I did! I was itching for a quick hair cut/change. Since I'm balling on a budget, I was in search of a hair stylist with a reasonable price that wouldn't burn a whole in my not-so-deep pocket. Called and got a next day appointment which was great. Sophia is her own one-person-shop inside of Sola Salons. The "salon" is a one room operation which guarantees personalized service. I got a hair cut and was quoted $50 as a new customer. Then I saw the Yelp deal and paid $19 for $30 worth of services. Don't do that new customers because the way the math worked out I paid an additional $35 on top of my $19 which was $54. Sophia explained that this made up for Yelp's commission. Okay :-\ Money aside, the cut is great and my hair looks so much healthier. Sophia showed me how to make my hair do soft waves which I haven't tried yet, but plan to. Will I be back? I am not one for planning ahead. When I noticed the lion's mane that was growing out of my head, I thought it might be time for a hair cut. Apparently, these are the sorts of things you need to plan in advance, because when I decided to finally cut my hair every salon was booked. As a low maintenance gal who usually gets her hair cut by a family friend stylist, I was unaware that hair appointment etiquette frowns upon same day appointments. After being turned away by every high end salon in town, I was beginning to lose hope. Luckily, I stumbled upon Sophia's yelp reviews and decided to give it one last shot. I texted (yes, texted) her and within minutes I had an appointment for that afternoon. I asked whether or not I needed to print the deal voucher from the site, as I don't have a printer here. She said not to purchase it online, and that she would honor the price when I came in. Fast forward 3 years later (I am finally getting around to posting this review) and I have not let anyone else cut my hair since I've been going to Sophia. I was in love with my new do - shoulder length layers, heavy bangs, and the subtle highlights - the moment she put the scissors down, and I still am! My biggest problem is the high turnover rate at a lot of the places I go to get my haircut. I was going with Sport Clips in Encino, and was pretty happy for awhile. It was there I met Sophia, and was very pleased with the cut, and she was very sweet on top of that. I would wait specifically for her. Then she left. I kept going, but then the stylists I did get seemed like they were never the same people. Lots of turnover there. My cut lengths are on file, but I would never get the same haircut, which was slightly annoying. I'm not a stickler, as my hair grows pretty fast, so a shorter than normal cut was back to normal pretty quickly. Just individual interpretation I guess. On top of that, I would go in on a Saturday morning, and find 2 people ahead of me, and 1 stylist. Poor scheduling...Enough was enough. I got in contact with Sophia again, and have never been happier. Consistent cuts, and the same old sweet Sophia. The location is convenient, with valet out back (i believe), but I have always found space in the metered parking out front. The setting is single chair, which is a lot more personal. Sophia is also great about being able to take me after a last minute call in. I usually just text her, and she responds quickly. I'm thrilled. I just need to work on my 8 year old son now to get him to switch to Sophia from Lolly-cuts. Should be easy with the personal touch offered by such a quiet single chair salon....and a great stylist. read more

So I was in a desperate need of a hair cut/trim. Being new to the area I was trying to find somewhere I could get a nice hair cut for a decent price. Nonetheless I came to yelp for help. After visiting a hair dresser from Pasadena doing a fabulous job but having to pay an arm and a leg i decided to look outside of her because I needed something more affordable. So I went with Sophia because of her good reviews. So I went in and put my nerves aside. She turned out to be very sweet and a wonderful person. This is why I had such a hard time writing today's review. She greeted me, got to know me and had great customer service that helped put me at ease about getting my hair cut with a stranger. An hour later after I explained what I was looking for and shared pictures plus the lovely conversation, I was done. I got up to look in the mirror and horror was all over my face. I did not get what I asked for. I went from being a good-looking 29 y/o to looking like 13 y/o. OMG, it's been a week now and my feeling about my haircut have not changed, I hate my hair. I cried myself to sleep that afternoon because I had 5-6 months of length that were not shaped and just stripped away from my head. I don't know how to style it and I no longer look like a woman I look like a little girl. Lesson I learned is that while saving money and paying $65 for my hair cut and lousy blow dry/style I forgot to mention because the bad haircut took priority in the job, I lost my beautiful hair, have no cute way of styling it and would have preferred to spend another $50 and gone back to the same person before. That being said I would personally never return and not recommend Sophia for a haircut. Sorry, Sophia but I really hate my haircut!! read more

I was looking for a new stylist and scoured Yelp to help in my search. I came across Sophia and not only did she have excellent reviews, but she was offering a deal! Her location was super convenient for this born and raised Valley Girl. It is located in what looks like an office building from the outside, but the inside is loft-like with a bunch of hair studios. Sophia's studio is cute, private and she is so welcoming. She was busy too, which is always a good sign. She came out to meet me and was super sweet. Once in her chair, she went over what she thought I needed to do to my very long hair. In the end, I had my roots done and cut off about 4 inches of my hair! Sophia walked me through everything she did and kept the conversation going! She was super sweet and once she was finished, I was floored at the total! Totally beyond reasonable! Salon Sophia is run by Sophia herself and my experience here has always been great. Being able to sit 1-on-1 with a hair stylist is soo awesome. I feel so much more comfortable being able to close my eyes and completely relax without having to worry about other people in the room. Her cuts are deliberate and quick, and I feel very confident when Sophia gets to work on my hair. And-- when I let her know I want to keep the top a little longer this time, she listens. I always have my hair shampoo'd after the cut and the way she massages my head really makes it seem like I'm at some spa. It's so relaxing and soothing. It's a shame you'd never know about Sophia without pretty much a referral, so you've heard it from me: fair price, great treatment, go get'em fellow yelpers. read more

I got a wash and haircut from Sophia Maldonado of Salon Sophia today - she's incredible! My hair looks and feels great and she was so friendly and accommodating to me and my 6-year-old son. Plus, I had left a message for her a few days ago not knowing it was her day off (Wednesday) but she was very prompt and friendly in returning my call to schedule an appointment. She works everyday except Mondays and Wednesdays and takes early (9 am) and late (9 pm, possibly later) and weekend appointments so she can always work in a time that's convenient for you. I discovered her through Tippr (Groupon-like deal) but will be seeing her from now on, and telling all my friends and family about her too. She also give kids haircuts at a reduced price. I had bought a deal (wash & cut) from Tippr awhile back, but instead of using it for myself, I gave the voucher to my mother since she was in dire need of a haircut than I was. I had gotten a confirmation call for the appt I had made, which- these days are rare (some salon's never give courtesy calls the day prior to your appt). I had searched through yelp because i wanted some layers to my shoulder length Asian hair. I came across Sophia and gave her a call. She quoted me at $25 for a new customer. After reading some good reviews, and a better price than any salon had quoted me, I decided to make an appointment that same day. When i got there, she was waiting for me and i told her what i want for my hair and showed her some pics. She quickly washed my hair within 5 mins then i was ready for the cut. I dont think she washed my hair thoroughly with shampoo because i could feel the my scalp was still oily after the cut. Sophia is nice and we chatted as she worked on me but i felt that she was rushing me in and out. The cut overall was ok, nothing fancy. I had asked about the deal $30 for $19 that she had but she said that originally she charges $35 for cut but she's giving me a new customer price at $25. Blowdrying with a round brush was going to cost me another $30. I would have gone with extra charge but i didnt think that my scalp was clean for that to happen. I'm so glad I listened to the other Yelpers because words cannot describe how amazing Sophia is! When I first got there I instantly fell for her little space, it's very intimate and you don't have to deal with other people yapping around or listening in on your conversations. I had highlights that needed some touching up and I needed a trim. It's always nerve racking going to a new hair stylist for color. You never know what you could look like when you walk out of the salon. Sophia was easy to talk to and made me feel comfortable. Almost like I've known her forever. I loved the results. I yelped Sophia the night before my appt. She was able to fit me in the next morning. I went in for my first eyelash extensions and a haircut. Parking is $3.00 in a garage located behind the building. Her space is cool. It's located inside a place that stylists can rent individual rooms. So it feels very private and nice. She was incredibly professional and nice. The lashes took about 1 hr and a 1/2. The haircut was a little rushed, but I had an appt to keep and she was just trying to keep me on schedule.
