I have had the same haircut and color for years so it always makes me nervous to do something drastic. She was very patient and helpful during the consultation, wanting to address any fears that I had. She was able to show me a stock pile of examples and her confidence assures you that you are in great hands! I took her recommendation and gave her my input. Needless to say my hair came out freakin FABULOUS! My friends absolutely love it! The color blends extremely well so it looks natural. It did take almost 4 hours for the appointment, but you can't rush an artist and the result was well worth it! She also gave me a great haircut. I got a compliment from a complete stranger, telling me she LOVED my hair! (This girl didn't even know me or know that I had just recently got my hair done.) So her work speaks for itself. Went to see Heather at Salon Savoy and was very pleased! She listened to everything I asked about my color and I came out with exactly what I wanted! I've been looking for a long time to get the perfect golden blond hair color (a la Jennifer Aniston) and previous colorists haven't been able to get me there, but Heather was able to make my hair look perfect! I am absolutely blown away at the service I received from Shea McJagger today. I came in with a horrid shade of blonde (supposed to be platinum) and a pixie cut that needed major help and reshaping. She is absolutely wonderful - a delighful person and fantastic stylist. She will tell you what is a good idea or not and if not, what can be tweaked to make it work. I get my hair cut by Heather at Salon Sovay. She is excellent. I'm a pale skinned redhead with a beard so I didn't have a lot going for me when I went in for my first cut, but somehow Heather turned me into a decent looking dude. She takes her time, doesn't rush you out the door and tells you what you need to know to take care of your hair. Absolutley great. read more

I can't speak on the skill of the stylists, but boy does this place need work on customer service. I walked in to inquire about a consultation to get my hair dyed, and there was a stylist working w/a client. She was the only person there. I said that I'd like to schedule a consult to figure out what to do with my hair. The stylist said to go online and look at their website and email my request. She couldn't help me because she was busy. I understood that she was elbows-deep washing hair, but she could have easily asked me to wait five minutes, and then give me one minute to schedule something. I wasn't looking for the consult to happen right that instant, but please..lock the door if you can't accommodate scheduling, or have time to talk to someone face to face for one minute to schedule something. I get that she was busy with her client, but seriously.. lock the door if you don't want to turn people off. I left feeling very small, like I intruded by walking in. read more

Charlie Hodges is awesome! I've been going to him for over a year now and still loving him. He treats me well, fills my wine glass, makes me laugh, showers me with compliments and does whatever I want him to do. He gives me his professional opinion and when i'm feeling adventurous, we experiment with different colors. I totally trust his artistic and technical abilities and he knows what looks good on me. Sovay has been doing my hair since 2008...every 6 weeks. I love her. She is by far the best colorist in Austin. My hair's health has drastically improved since she started with it. She takes special care to not damage it again as it is extremely fragile and can be ruined with the wrong developer in seconds. Not only is she a fabulous hair colorist, but she is fun. I always enjoy my time catching up with her. She has a talent for making women look like super models with her gorgeous blow outs...i always enjoy walking out of the salon looking beautiful wishing I could have her blow out my hair every day...sigh. Her salon as a whole though is pretty great. Many of her stylists have been there for years because Sovay only hires the best. I have personally gotten to know many of the other hair stylists when they pop in and say hi and I would vouch for them too. Heather Davis of Salon Sovay is FANTASTIC. I had been growing out a short hair cut and it was feeling too bulky but I was terrified to have it cut. Heather to the resuce! She explained that there is a different way to cut long hair so that it retains the look of long hair and has style and movement. I let her go to work. When she was finished, I was overjoyed. Loved my hair when it got cut. I'm even LOVING it more now since I figured how to style it. The way Shea cut my hair it's easy peasy to style and looks cool! I've always liked the hair styles that looked messy in a sexy/stylish way. I could NEVER achieve that look. It always looked like I got out of bed and it was Medusa hair. When my hair flattens a bit, I just run my fingers through my hair and tousle it a bit and wha-la! My next thing I'm going to try is getting that tousled curly look with a flat iron. So, this review has been a long time coming; I got my haircut about a month and a half ago, and I just never got around to writing this. Here it is, Finally. :) I would like to personally give a round of applause to my new stylist Anthony Brown. He cut my hair once and I will never go to anyone else in Austin for a haircut. As a guy, I worry (probably too much) about my hair. I had medium-length to long hair the last 5 years of my life, so I was in desperate need of a change. I called Salon Sovay on a Sunday. Yes, you read it correctly, A SUNDAY. I was expecting to not hear back from them till Monday to schedule an appointment officially, but he called back the same day and said, "You could come in now if you want." I kind of freaked out. Was I prepared to lose all my hair? No, but I walked into this adorable little house (because the salon is located in a house... it's kinda nifty) with all my worries and doubts. Anthony was AWESOME. He kept me feeling good about my hair. He seemed almost inspired by my hair and let his scissors do the talking. I walked out of the house with a new look that I love. It's been a month and a half, and I've done a lot with my hair. I've worn it up. I've worn it down. I've worn it all around, and I've never been disappointed. Whatever Anthony did, he did it right, and I love it. I feel bad for not writing this sooner because more guys deserve a haircut like this. The environment was phenomenal, Anthony was amazing, and my haircut was flawless. If I could give them more than 5 stars, I would. read more

I feel like I should give two reviews: one for the hair cut and one for the color/highlights. The basics: the salon is cute, clean, organized. No complaints there. Could be anything from 3 to 5 stars, depends on your preference. The stylist: I saw Sovay. She is a lovely person, very meticulous, and easy to talk to. One of the more enjoyable stylists I've seen. Five stars. The hair cut: OMG, 5 stars all the way. She didn't take off any noticeable length although I saw her cut my hair. It looked well-shaped and LONGER when I walked out than when I went in. She's obviously had a LOT of experience in cutting the hair of girls who are "growing it out." I would go to her again in a heartbeat for a cut. The color: Weeeeelll - its average. So 3 stars. She didn't do anything wrong, just to clarify, or surprise me or mess up my hair. It looked very good when I walked out of the salon and the next day. The problem is that my former hairstylist in my last city of residence was a genius at color / highlighting difficult hair (she had people flying in from D.C. so she could do their color). So I'm a bit spoiled. I'm used to several colors of blond being used to blend the roots into the weirdo platinum blond shade that my hair tends to fade to around 1-3 inches from the scalp when I do nothing. And the former stylist would use balayage for highlights where needed as well. The end result was blond hair that looked natural without damaging my baby fine, easily discolored, slow growing hair with bleach. I know from experience that the average stylist's suggestion for my hair / roots is "bleach!" I was hoping for a most sophisticated response here, but bleach it was and that was the only option offered. I know the shade numbers that my former stylist used and was happy to be hands on with the color mixing and selection, but ... bleach. To be fair, she did use a very low level bleach upon request. And I did consent because I had an event coming up and had procrastinated and needed to do something - and hadn't bleached my hair in 5 years so assumed it could take it. Of course, 4 weeks after the coloring, I again have a massive chunk of hair that's a problem area due to the bleach. That's unique to me, though, most likely. I can't imagine anyone having anything bad to say about Sovay's hair-cutting skills and for the average highlights and color that most stylists in Austin seem to offer, she does a perfectly acceptable - if average - job there as well. So, combining the three stars for the highlights and the five stars for the cut - four stars. And one review. :) read more

Charlie Hodges is awesome. As a normal guy, looking for a quick cut, I first met Charlie at some European salon. Cool guy, great service, and after he left I followed. After 3 or 4 years of going to Charlie, I moved away from Austin, but have never found anyone that measures up to Charlie. I've referred both guys and girls, and have only heard great things. Where to begin!! I have had thin, fair hair my whole life. I decided to try to make it grow and become as healthy as it gets - which resulted in me not coloring my bleached hair for about 8 months and not cutting it for another 4 months. I went into Kari ready to spend my paycheck on tape-in extensions and finally accept that fact that my natural hair was not going to cut it for the look I wanted. During the consultation, I explained to Kari what I wanted and she convinced me to make my hair into a long bob... the most drastic decision I could make!! I am 23 and now is the time to have long, luscious locks, right?! (Even though my mom has been telling me for about 4 years to do a long bob)... Any way - with one look - Kari told me that a long bob is the perfect fit for my face shape and hair texture. With full faith in Kari, along with some nervous humming as the scissors went to work, I walked out with the BEST hair style and color I have EVER had. I could not be more grateful to Kari! She is extremely talented and confident in her craft. I have spent about $200 - $250 on every hair appointment I have ever had.... and it comes to prove that money is never the issue.. but that the stylist is all that matters. After reading all the positive Yelp reviews about Kelly Magee I scheduled an appointment with her. She was amazing! She gave me a much needed trim to cut off some of my damaged ends and gave me layers for movement. She also completely transformed my hair color without damaging it and gave me advice on what products to use at home to maintain the health of my hair. KELLY MAGEE....totally rocks!!! I was visiting Austin in February and reached out to Salon Sovay and was more than impressed!!! I've been to several top-notch salons at home in Denver, but never found anyone that could get it right...not the right cut, not the right color. Other stylists consistently failed, especially with the highlight color...and was even told by some that my hair was too dark to lighten past that caramel color. But Kelly nailed it first time...perfect cut, perfect color!!! She really listens to you and talks to you about her techniques and what works best for you. In all the years and many, many stylists in 4 states, no one had ever gotten it right...but Kelly did!!! I can't say enough about her, she's amazing and wished she was in my part of the country. This guy knows how to cut hair! I've never had too much luck with hair salons in the past. Most of the hair stylist who cut Asian hair can't really do it right. It will look good for a week and then start to look awful again. It wasn't till I found Charlie Hodges at Salon Sovay did I know that this guy is by far one of the best in Austin. What sets Charlie apart from the rest is his consistency. It doesn't look bad a week or two later. He is laid back and a really fun stylist to come in and visit. Even though almost all of his cuts are different every time it looks perfect for the person you are. Even though I now live in the DFW area I still find the time to drive down to Austin to get my hair cut with Charlie because he is just that good. read more
