I am that salon customer that can be a real pain in the butt. I've been blonding my hair to one extent or the other for many many years, and I have been spoiled by some pretty amazing stylists along the way. My hair expectations aren't outrageous but I do want to trust who's taking scissors and foils to my mop top. If I have a bad experience, I stay out of the salon for years, for fear of repeating bad hair again and again. I was in need of some serious chopping of my too long, wavy hair and didn't want to invest in the time to fly to LA this weekend for my stylist there so... I found Nikki at Salon Surreal. Wow, so happy I did. From the point of confirming the appointment, to calling the salons reception desk letting them know I was going to be running a few minutes late and the young man was such a doll, to Nikki sweetly and graciously introducing herself and being a wonderful conversationalist during the styling and the cutting of my hair, to expertly knowing exactly what I wanted and how to achieve that look was so REFRESHING. Nikki is incredibly talented and I was so happy when I left her chair with my new haircut, that I immediately booked my highlights for the following week. Great find in the 16th Street neighborhood, I will definitely be back. I visited Kyna for the first time after reading she was good with highlights. I hadn't visited a salon since March 2020. I wanted to tone down the brassy color and more of a bayalage look. She lightened & brightened the highlights, which look gorgeous and added some dark to cover existing roots. Really added depth! I have been looking high and low for someone to give me a decent - I was just hoping for decent haircut and color. Mariah is a great stylist. Called to make an appointment and they had us in a few hours later. The cut and condition was for my little sister - she's 14. Walked-in (no wait), Mariah met with us a minute or two later. My sister wanted a short "pixie-cut", but wasn't sure exactly HOW she wanted it. Prior to coming into the salon, her and I scrolled Google/Pinterest for example cuts. Her choices ranged from Jennifer Lawrence's recent bob to Goldie Hawn's short, vintage do in the 1960's. hahah. Needless to say, this could've turned ugly really quick, literally AND figuratively. Thank God and Mariah, it didn't. She was very, very attentive to my little sister's wants. She cut and stopped, showing sister where she was at in terms of length and style and waited patiently as I explained to sister, "hey, be honest if you like it or not". Great with kids (okay, okay 14) young women. She styled her hair, then walked her through on how to style it herself and what would be the best tools to use. My sister loved it. I decided to book an appt here after reading all these great reviews on yelp! I saw that a lot of salons are closed on Sundays so it's definitely a plus that they are open. They had an opening with Laura so off I went! I was definitely pleasantly surprised. The staff was friendly and Laura did a great job asking questions. I'm one of those "do whatever you want" type of people BUT I have a lot of hair and it's a weird Asian wavy. You can't really cut it too short or it puffs out and I am super lazy and rarely style. Yes, I know... I expect to wake up look great and go. The cut- All I kept thinking was "omg, she's cutting too much off.. Omg more layering... Omg more razoring.. Omg this is going to be a disaster." I was hoping for the best with this salon and really wanted it to be perfect. don't get me wrong, my hair came out ok but i'm not super satisfied. you'll notice it looks like the "before" of a color correction on another review of this salon. i asked for/showed a picture of platinum blonde with little brown lowlights. i had preexisting roots and blonde highlights but i was told she could do it exactly how i wanted it. i walked out with my hair soaking wet as well after she ripped half my head off with the hairbrush. again, i wasn't expecting it to be perfect or or quick or anything, especially because i have long thick hair. this is a few hours later when it was air dried and brushed again. i didn't want it to look stripy and i said so. i am not tall so the top of my head is very visible. i also wanted to get my roots good because it not going to be able to go to the salon anytime soon, so i wanted them to blend too. it looks great from far away (thank god for social distancing) but closer up it gets questionable. it was not cheap, more than i was told i would pay, and i reached my hair budget max. read more

I'm disappointed to leave a negative review. The owner and stylists are sweet and nice to work with. My big issue is with the salon manager. She's allegedly been running this salon approx 17 years (she mentioned on the phone) . for my wedding last month I needed hair and makeup for myself and two other women. The salon manager in her infinite wisdom scheduled two employees to do all this. She guaranteed me on the phone they would "make it happen" and I would be out of there by 12 sharp. My hair and makeup was last, and by this point the stylists ran out of time. For me, the bride. They turned me away from the mirror and started rushing doing my hair and makeup at the same time. I was later told this was against policy... well I couldn't see my hair to speak up about my distaste for it. I tried to have the stylist re work it but it proved impossible with the amount of hair spray she used. The whole thing was one unfortunate turn of events after the other. My two bridesmaids got a braid done, and hair down and curled. That's it, no elaborate time consuming things. I had to ask the stylists to stop rushing and do a good job because I'm the bride. They were understandably stressed. The salon manager sat up front the whole time... (she told me later on the phone she knew I was running late but she did nothing to help) and what do you know? it's 12:30 pm. I gave up on it and left. I went home and tried to rework my hair myself. The whole thing was a nightmare. I don't fault the stylists, they were simply inexperienced and put in a bad position. I called the salon the week after the wedding several times. After being sent to voicemail I called back and the manger answered, giving me some lame story about her just leaving me a voicemail. She did not. I have had to chase this woman down many times for scheduling, payment, and just to talk customer service with her. She never returns calls like she explicitly promises to. I had to chase her down to pay the salon +$800 for the bridal services. She is always full of one lame excuse or another. One time she said she had no excuse... but then again claimed she left a voicemail. Funny she's the only person I miss calls from... not other employees at the salon... I won't be going back. She said she would refund me $100 for my poor experience but then said she did not know how...? Manager of 10+ years doesn't know how to refund. Finally days after this promise it went thru. She promised to call me back again about the refund and never did, shocker! Again, the owner is sweet as can be, and the stylists try their best. It's just a poorly run salon. read more

Long overdue review but here it goes. I was so excited to try this salon from the great reviews. I made a grave mistake. I asked for partial highlights but I wanted to be as blonde as possible. I basically got 5 baby highlights on top with all the focus on the bottom. I left $130 down the drain. I actually called and went back, another $25 tip. I had her add a haircut this time so that I wouldn't be wasting her time. Oh boy. My left side was a full inch shorter than the right. I had holes in the cut where it was so uneven. Everytime I did my hair I almost cried. I had to get 3 inches cut off to even the whole cut out. I've never felt worse about myself than when I left that salon. Over $200 gone, just so I could spend another $100 at another salon to fix it. Stay away. read more

So my hair stylist was Katie and I had a 9 am appointment with her, I got to the salon by 8:55am and sat and waited for her...she didn't show up until 9:10 am...I know I may be a stickler on this but at my job if you're late then you're late and it looks poorly on the person... So right off the bat as a new client I was super dissapointed. She was nice hence this being one of the reasons I didn't give this place 1 star... My hair was so long it touched my butt and I will add photos to show .... I asked her i wanted to save as much as my hair as possible and to keep the length below the shoulder blades ..I also asked her to give me layers in my hair and.showed a pic of what I wanted and she assured me she could do it....after everything is done I show no layers whatsoever and she chopped nearly all my hair off and it falls just alittle below the shoulders... I wanted to cry at how much of my hair was taken and to not even give me what I asked for .... The hair doesn't look bad it just looks like she cut it all off and said done... The years it took me to grow my hair was taken away in less than an hour with a cut so simple ppl couldn't even tell anything was done... Meg is an amazing hairstylist. In the past I have just done my own ombre. But I thought might as well have a professional do it. So I went to meg and she did awesome. My ombre didn't fade into the next color with out a line. When meg did it she did a great job making sure there were no noticeable lines into the next color. I was in to get a root touch up and partial highlights along with cut. My appointment was with Amanda. I rarely (only one prior review of any kind) but this was important to me. I have NEVER been so disappointed in over all cut/color and it took 3 1/2 hours. I don't have thick or long hair. My hair was over processed. She too so long putting the foil wraps on highlights. My hair now has a greenish tint and way way to blonde. My hair is fried broken and terrible. The stylist behind our chair processed two highlights and blowouts while I was sitting there. I asked for choppy Bob cut. Showed her 4 pictures. It took me a year to get the length long enough for cut I wanted. I just can even explain my dissatisfaction enough. $200 dollars and yuck!!! read more

I called Surreal salon in desperate need, I had gone to a stylist that came highly recommended who had ruined my hair with platinum highlights when what I asked for was a Smokey blond balayage. They not only responded within minutes via my yelp inquiry, there were able to see me within the hour for a consult. I had called 3 other salons in the area who couldn't see me until the end of the week for a consult. I was able to consult with Bella, who not only made me feel super comfortable but less stressed about getting my mess fixed. She was able to book me early for the following day and walked me through the process. She did a phenomenal job recovering my natural root color and blending in my balayage. Salon Surreal is the Best hair salon I have EVER been to! Since moving to AZ. I've tried several salons... they were all awful. I either had a bad cut or the color was completely off. What a fabulous find Salon Surreal has been. When I called to make my first appointment the receptionist spent at least 5 minutes on the phone with me in order to match me to just the right stylist. I was matched with Amanda. She is amazing. We spoke for about 15 minutes before she did anything to my hair. By the way... Best scalp massage you will ever experience. I walked out of there with the most beautiful haircut and color I've ever had. Amanda was so kind and caring. Note: this review is from a few months back but I have been so busy and completely forgot to post it, sorry! This salon is so cute! Robin did an absolutely amazing job and I love my hair SO MUCH. If I could give more stars I would. I got my hair dyed very dark brown approximately a year ago, and wanted to get lighter again. I also wanted to go shorter (approx. shoulder length) with curtain bangs. We decided on a mushroom brown balayage with some blonde. Robin recommended a layered cut to show off the different colors, which worked so well. Robin was extremely meticulous: I have very thick hair and he was foiling for around 3 hours. Every strand of hair was colored (even underneath that can't be seen!). He put a lot of effort into it--the final product took around 6 hours in total. Robin was funny, knowledgable, and enjoyable to talk to the entire time. He also has very cute dogs! The entire process was very easy and seamless. The final product was gorgeous, and I am so so happy with my hair. Thank you, Robin! read more

Hands down the best salon that Phoenix has to offer. The front desk is always super friendly and makes it a point to learn your name. And the entire facility is always spotless. Plus they always have cookies and water out, because they know the importance of snacks and staying hydrated. The real reason though that Salon Surreal is the absolute best is because of Ty Taylor. He is such a phenomenal stylist! There's a reason I've been going back to see him for almost two years now. His top priority is always the health and integrity of your hair. My hair goes down to my mid back and I've had a full bleach and color treatment done on it. I've gone from my natural super dark brown hair (just a few shades lighter than black) to teal then to bright blue, and my hair is just as healthy as it was before I started getting it colored. That is definitely due to Ty taking such great care of me and my hair. Also I'm not ashamed to admit I can be pretty high maintenance when it comes to my hair. I am very very specific when it comes to the exact look, cut and color I want. Ty will go out and do research and hunt down different color brands to make sure I get exactly what I want. He always delivers. Not only does he know what he's doing when it comes to hair. He's just an all around great person. He always shares all of the creative projects he is involved in outside of hair and has taken a genuine interest in all my creative hobbies. Honestly I couldn't ask for a better stylist. I am really surprised that Salon Surreal has received such positive reviews. I mean, *really* surprised. I went (on these Yelp recommendations) and immediately wanted to call Tabitha for a salon takeover. I went in for a manicure/pedicure and was able to get in the same day. Parking was a bit of a struggle on a weekday afternoon but not too bad. When I walked in I was greeted by a full wall of products. That's all you see. Just this huge wall of products. I think Huey Lewis and the News was on the sound system, too. I went to check in and there were lots of young girls--none of them with fabulous haircuts--standing around the front desk. They checked me in and I waited for my nail tech, who showed up and gave me the weakest handshake ever. I almost laughed and could barely hear her. She was perfectly nice and polite, but it was just awkward. She took me back and gave me a class of water, which was nice, and then started on my hands. I didn't have much to say to her (and couldn't hear her over the N'Sync song on the stereo) so I just looked around as she clipped my cuticles. The place is a cluttered mess. I couldn't believe it. There's just stuff everywhere. Photos, pieces of paper, knick-knacks, stacks of towels, old chairs and nail accessories. Clutter clutter clutter. And on top of the clutter was lots of dust. It was gross. The decor is this weird early 90s red/black/contemporary thing going on. Oh and did I mention the music? Yeah. I admit that bad music stresses me out--I'm just that kind of person--but this was so bad that if I heard it at a bar or a coffee shop I'd turn around and walk out. And it wasn't even "dentist's office" bad. It was worse than what you'd hear at Applebee's. My pedicure was better because I could just sit there and let her do her thing and bury my head in a magazine. There were a lot of staff standing around still, too. One had a laptop open. I suppose the most non-relaxing thing I experienced was the smells. This salon uses Creative nails and the lotions and accessories all reek of fake fruits and flowers. It was nauseating. When I left I went back to use the restroom and passed by the huge washing room and several dozen lockers where I suppose the staff keeps their stuff? It all just screamed "factory" to me. The bathroom, too, was this weird mish-mosh of contemporary (not modern) and Tuscan. There is nothing soothing about this salon. And as a new client I was shocked they didn't offer me a discount. Instead, I paid $90 after tip for my mani/pedi. And sure enough, my cuticles were ragged and unfinished and after a week my toenail polish is chipping. On Newbury Street in Boston I paid $45 for a pedicure that lasted me 3 weeks. If you like the kind of salon that's calm, relaxing, serene, and upscale, this is not your place. If you like fun and action and don't care so much if you have to go back every week because everyone there is so much fun, then this is your place. Personally, I like calm and quiet and quality. read more

I had called last minute and managed to get a 6:15 appointment. My appointment was with Emily. She informed me she would be late, which I didn't mind since I called with such short notice. At one point during the session I commented on her darling son in the photo on the stand. She made a "too bad I won't to get to see him since I worked so late!" After talking about how I didn't want blunt layers and I'd once had before, that's exactly how they came out. She tried to give it some style but it didn't do much. 3 stars because the rest of the staff was unpretentious as promised, and Emily recommended some great product (though hella expensive, so I'm sure she makes something for up selling). Really it would be 2.5 for her, because I shouldn't have to get my own shears and fix my layers. ... but my dear if you don't want to work late then don't schedule another appointment. Lesson: if you're told Emily is your stylist for the day, better avoid seeing her later than 6 pm. read more

This place is consistently rated one of the top two or three salons in the state, which is probably what drew my sister and mom there to begin with. Being a totally oblivious male when it comes to things like this, I usually just go with recommendations from friends or family. What was surprising was that it has all the chic trendiness of the upscale places, which ding patrons for 60-75$ per male cut, but at less than half the price. I have gotten cuts from Myriah, Rae Lyn, and Lucy and they all have done great jobs. They all were able to take what I instructed (for example, once it was, "I'm shooting for Dr. McDreamy. Go!") and I'm always pleasantly surprised. Good conversation, nice people, and no snobby feel like at most spots like it. read more

I've gone here a few times in the last 5 years with no issues. I just had basic trims on really long, layered hair. I recently got an A-line at a stylist in Vegas and had a stylist here clean it up after a few months with no issues. Several months later I decided to take it to a layered Bob (think julianne hough) and went to a stylist I'd been to before at Salon Surreal. It is a horrible hack job, more of a mullet! I went back after trying to style it myself, thinking I just needed to play with it a little ...... no luck. I called the salon and they scheduled an appointment with the stylist that touched up my A-line few months ago (again at Salon Surreal) and she basically told me I need to let it grow out. I actually went and got a 2nd opinion at a different salon, he stated it's a bad cut and recommended I grow it out. The front is about 1 1/2" shorter than the front. I have a few issues: 1st, no apology from the salon. 2nd, no refund or potential fix. 3rd, after about a week I went to use the Moroccan Oil deep conditioner I bought and there were obvious scoops taken out of it! Possibly pulled from a stylist to sell? (There weren't any on the shelf, then one magically appeared!) I have several job interviews in the next few weeks and now I look frumpy. Disappointed in my cut, paying for used conditioner and the lack of accountability on the part of the salon to try to fix this. read more

Thankfully, my stylist Mandy didn't prejudge me and was willing to take her time discussing my new cut and highlights. It's not an intimidating, snotty salon. Everyone's really nice and friendly. They always have snacks and tea or coffee for the clients. Having to sit there for two hours (I have a lot of hair), participating in the inane banter with my stylist who is annoyingly way cooler than me. One might say I had serious commitment issues when it came to stylists. I would stick with them for a couple months then leave them for someone new. My search has ended! I can't find enough good things to say about Bobby. He's funny and personable, he always gives his suggestions and he never scolds me when I let my hair grow out for WAY too long a time.
