You can even specify a hairstylist should you have a preference. Someone from the salon called to check in and ensure I had the best experience by asking a few basic questions about what I wanted for a cut. I was really impressed by the thoroughness in follow-up. When I got to the salon, check in was quick, the front desk kindly asked to hang up my coat, and there was no wait time (despite arriving slightly early for my appointment). You could also request a refreshment, and they have one of the most extensive coffee menus I've ever seen! The wash, cut, and styling were all done seamlessly, with my stylist periodically asking clarifying questions along the way. I paid at the door, and inquired when I should be back. Another staff member knowledgeably mentions about 6-8 weeks to maintain the shape of the cut. Everyone was so warm and kind. Not to mention, there's great parking in the front and in the alley. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

I've tried several styles and Ms. Ahn perfects the styles every time. Now I stick to the one I like, since I've going to Ms. Ahn for many years (10+). This is premium Korean hair care. There's always a saying "you get what you pay for". I've tried other spot in Chicagoland and it's not what you would get at Kim Sun Young. Sure, I can pay cheaper but the quality I got was not the same, so I always return to Ms. Ahn to take care of my hair. With my digital perm, she explains to me how to care for my curls, and also let me know how the condition of my hair/scalp is and what I need to do to get improve my hair health. I made an appointment about 3 weeks in advance for a Friday morning digital perm. It typically takes 3-4 hours for the perm. With my iPad and AirPod, time flies by while I'm watching the show. They also have a small "earcap" that looks like a shower cap so your ears are protected & my AirPod. I get a cut first, then a perm. Friday afternoon with 3 hair professionals and 2 assistants. They are busy because they are able to work simultaneous while the perm client is waiting for perm chemical to settle into the hair, they can do a hair cut.

The TL;DR is that I was unable to get my hair coloring done and also got a haircut that was not very flattering. I felt I looked better when I came in vs when I came out of the salon. This was all despite the effort I made to contact this salon multiple times beforehand to ensure that they were able to do the hair that I wanted. In January, I had my hair cut and permed in Los Angeles, which I was happy with, but I wanted to also make my hair blonde with this hair style (I'm a Korean American with dark hair). I confirmed with my hairstylist in LA as well as the internet that you should wait a while to bleach your hair to space out the damage, at least ~4 weeks. I currently live in Cleveland, OH for grad school and heard there aren't many good salons in OH for Asian hair. So I did my research, found this salon in Chicago with good ratings, read through ratings, looked through photos, and then first messaged them on instagram to set an appt. I sent them reference photos of the color I wanted, plus a current selfie showing my hair to ask if what I wanted was possible. I also explained I was going to be driving in from Cleveland (took me 7 hours since I avoided tolls) so I wanted to really make sure before I made the trip. I told them also about my perm from weeks ago (it was going to be over 7 weeks since the perm for the appt day I asked for). I also called 24 hours later directly to the salon since I didn't get a response on instagram right away. The person on the phone booked me with Michelle. I then proceeded to explain my situation and told them I sent them photos on instagram. The woman on the phone tried to reassure me saying "it's okay, Michelle can do whatever color. Don't worry about it." I took their word. They also responded on instagram confirming they could book me an appt and gave me an estimate of pricing (starting around $350) and time range (3-4 hours) based on the color I wanted. The day of my appt, I show Michelle my pictures and what I want. She starts rambling about how the color I want is not possible, or needs to be bleached multiple times because my hair color is too dark. I was asking her to clarify if that meant I have to come in on different days to get it done, and she wasn't very clear and eventually just said, "It's okay, we will figure it out. For now, you need a haircut right?" So we cut my hair to a length I was satisfied with, but since it wasn't dried/styled yet, I wasn't sure what the finished product would look like yet. Then we went back to discussing color. First, she tells me, "okay, we can bleach multiple times, but it may take a long time, maybe even 6 hours. Is that ok?" I said yes (I knew it might take a long time so I purposefully asked for their earliest appt time that day). "And it's going to be around $400-500. Is that ok?" I said yes again. THEN she says, "oh, and the bleach is going to flatten your perm, so you won't have your perm anymore." This is when I was stunned and hesitated and asked for time to think. I was already starting to worry about whether the color would actually look okay on me based on Michelle's initial response to my request, but then to also not have my perm that I had paid for before but I still wanted to be a part of my overall hairstyle? I was incredibly disappointed. I was definitely ignorant of how this hair stuff worked, but that's why I tried doing my research beforehand and asked them multiple times, sending them pictures and explaining my situation BEFORE I planned a trip 7 hours away by car. I don't have many free weekends, so this was also difficult for me to schedule. Eventually I declined the color because I didn't want to risk not liking the final color AND losing my perm. But I wish the staff, all the people I talked to here, told me BEFORE I made the trip to Chicago, and BEFORE she cut my hair. I honestly would not have gotten my haircut had I known I wasn't going to get color. I know cheaper hair salons for hair cuts in the area and might've opted for another place if I wanted one (my hair was already short, but the haircut price was still $70). The staff didn't necessarily act rude or anything, but they clearly failed to take my situation into consideration despite all of my effort and wasted my time, money and energy. And honestly I don't like the hair cut. I look like Johnny Depp from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; the lack of layers is not flattering. I have to pull my hair back daily to look decent. I'm just sad this happened and they may be competent at hair, but the inconsiderate communication was really disappointing.

I get my natural black hair lightened to a beige shade. You can find more examples of work from her instagram @hair2heart_heather Heather does a great job lightening the hair and lifting the brass without destroying the hair in the process and blending the roots in when doing a root touch up. If you want healthy, long lasting and great looking colored hair as an Asian, I would not go to anyone else.

She pointed to a honey blonde color and the lady told us that she can only dye our hair a dark color because our hair was long and it won't cover my cousin's "gray hair". I told her our Groupon stated Coloring/Highlighting. She explained she won't honor it because they will only dye it dark and we had long hair. It didn't state anything like that on our Groupon! The end result was TERRIBLE. My cousin's hair was tri-colored (honey blonde on top and red all over with black spots) My hair, was fine. Although, you can't even tell I got my hair dyed as it was just a brown color and 4 strands of highlighted hair. Bad service. Won't honor Groupon. Not worth saving the $30. Go somewhere else.

Lydia is pretty awesome. I have been getting magic straight perms for the past five years by stylists from all over including New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and I have to say that Lydia has done it the best. I've had it twice with her, and they have lasted a super long time. Also, she gives a meticulous haircut. The salon itself is in a non-descript strip mall next to a busy intersection in Niles, but it's worth the trek given how reliable her results are. Four stars instead of five because of how long it takes (about a half hour longer than other places I've been) and has been mentioned she doesn't offer a ton of creativity herself so it's best to come in with some idea of what you want (ie, length, layers, bangs, etc). read more

This place is Awesome. I went to Sean because the hair stylist that I was first scheduled for was too busy (I thought that was kind of unprofessional) and was hesitant to go to Sean BUT I am so glad that I did! I showed him a picture of a style that I had just picked out five minutes before hand, and it turned out GREAT. He was very conscious of how short I wanted it, and always asked if the length was OK. He cut exactly as much as I wanted off, although I personally believe that all stylist cut off at least an inch more than you desire. The shampoo girl also gave me a simple deep conditioning treatment for free of charge. They provide you water, tea, coffee while you wait. I recently tried this salon as I am new to the area. I loved the layout-- very classy and clean. It's a trendy little spot. I had my hair colored by sean. He is wonderful! He matched my blond perfectly and recommended great products! he even gave me information about the current products I was using... Such as, Moroccan Oil leaving a gold tint on my blond hair. I had a digital perm and hair styling done at this salon, and I must say, I'm really happy with the results! It was a complete change and I absolutely love it! Yang Mi, Erika and everyone were friendly and accommodating. They took the time to explain every detail to me, including pricing, length of time, and even how to style my new hair. I really appreciated their efforts to make me feel comfortable and informed throughout the entire process. I have been getting my hair cut and styled by Joy for the past 2 years. I am quite picky about my hair but Joy has been the greatest and she is very knowledgeable about men's hair. I have tried many other Salons in the Chicago area but have finally settled with Yangmi and been a loyal customer for more than 2 years. I always recommend Salon Yangmi to my friends and they instantly become regulars. The Salon itself is spacious and well maintained. The staffs are friendly and always a pleasure to be there. I came to Salon Yangmi after reading their reviews. I went there for regular perm&cut and paid $100 (tips not included). I showed a picture of how I wanted the style to look to Sonya(the stylist) and she did a wonderful job! Also, everyone was very kind. They were asking me if i needed anything or if I wanted something to drink and constantly asked if I needed a refill. yangmi gave me the best haircut of my life. My hair is full but fine and yangmi understood when I asked to give me as much body and volume as possible. My hair just falls perfectly into place with no fuss now and my boyfriend of 10 years just swooned when he saw me. I went to this salon last week and had an amazing experience. Hoyeon was my stylist and I highly recommend her. I went in not knowing what style I wanted. I asked her to help me decide. I have to say I had the best hair cut that ive ever had. I love the new style. Not only did I get an expert cut but after she showed me in detail how to blow dry and apply product to my hair by myself so I can look great everyday. I got my hair bleached and dyed for the first time by Hoyeon around a little more than a week ago, and the result has exceeded my expectations. The staff was very accommodating and sincere and were able to match my requests for the haircut and the hair color I wanted. They thoroughly walked me through what was possible and the steps they would take. I got a setting perm by hair designer Kelly. It took around 4 hours and she was kind the entire time. I liked how she only gave her attention to me and not any other customers. The design turned out really great and they gave a bonus hair treatment. At the end, she even gave me a little massage for the long time that the perm took. Long overdue review of Salon Yangmi! I had thermal reconditioning done at Salon Yangmi and am so happy I did. My hair was damaged and frizzy. I was blow-drying and straightening every day, now it's wash and go. The ladies at Salon Yangmi are friendly and professional. I also got a fabulous long angled bob haircut. I was one of their last appointment for the day and was 10 minutes late, it was nice of them to accommodate me even though I was late and did not rush though. I have had many hair experiences in my hair adventures but after coming to Yangmi I refuse to go anywhere in Chicago. Anywhere else there is a mix of inexperienced hair dressers but everyone here is top notch. Whoever cut my daughter's hair is horrible. ( My daughter didn't want to tell me the name of the person who cut her hair) She messed up so badly. Now my daughter is so embarrassed to go out. I was at the salon earlier today and I had an incredible experience. I got the Japanese straight perm and I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. Yangmi is a miracle worker! I have been to this salon several times now. My stylist is Yumi, and she is phenomenal for both cut and color. The haircut is the best cut I have ever had and it's very reasonably priced. However, color at this salon is expensive, but Yumi does very high-quality work and the result is amazing. I would highly recommend Yumi for both cut and color. read more

I typically cut my own hair since I've tried a handful of other places in the area and was never…read morefully satisfied with the outcome. It's also a mini-hobby of mine that I've been doing since 2017 or so and I'm usually happy with how I do it -- emphasis on "usually." But we have a lot of weddings coming up so I figured I should try to go somewhere to make it look more professionally done and not risk having something go wrong, and I've been looking for a new place anyway. I decided on coming here based on both the excellent Yelp and Google reviews, and it was also one of the more affordable ones ($25 for men's cut). I called at around 11am today and Young answered; I asked if she had any open spots in the afternoon which unfortunately she didn't. However she said I could come in at 7pm which is when they close, but she assured me that this was fine with her. At around 6pm she calls me and asks if I could head over now (I assume she had a cancellation or two); I was free so I was able to go. Street parking was readily available right in front of the shop. I read some reviews about the $5 charge for the shampoo service so I didn't put any product in my hair beforehand. I showed her some reference pictures, had a short discussion about what I wanted as well as some of her thoughts, and then she got right to it. It only took roughly 20 minutes as it was mostly a trim and not a big cut. She did seem a bit rushed but even so she was very efficient, although after getting home I noticed that there is a small area in the back that could have been blended in a little better. It's not terribly obvious though. What stood out to me was the fact that she actually styled my hair similar to the reference pictures I showed her. I know it sounds basic and silly, but I've shown the same reference pictures to other salons and they've only given me the haircut and minimally styled it with their hands + product afterwards; they've never really given me what I asked for. But Young busted out the flat iron and took the time to put some waviness into my otherwise thick and straight hair so I could finally see how I would look with this style. In the end I decided that the wavy-ish hair wasn't really for me, but I absolutely appreciate her giving me what I asked for so I could come to this decision. For the most part I'll keep cutting my own hair every now and then, but for those times where I don't feel like doing it or need it professionally done for a big event, I'll be coming back to see Young! You are dealing with many personalities. A really good receptionist knows how to make a customer always want to come back. Here is my experience tonight. I am horrified. I called yesterday. I gave the salon more than 24 hours notice just as I was told to do. I spoke to a lovely receptionist. I explained to her that heavy storms were coming in with many warnings. I did not want to drive in this weather. They were predicting tornados, hail and heavy winds. She was absolutely lovely to talk to and understood. I also explained to her that I did not want to get a fee for rescheduling. She said she understood and would take care of it. She also told me to call in the morning and let them know once I saw what the weather was like. I followed her advice and immediately called in the morning. I rescheduled my appointment. No problem, At 6:30 tonight Gail called (the other receptionist.) as obnoxious as can be and told me I did not follow the rules. She was going to place a fee on me. I believe it was $25. She kept saying we talked about this and would not stop. I honestly thought she was a broken record. I followed the rules. I did nothing wrong. I will tell you the right does not know what the left is doing. There is no communication between receptionists. This was a power trip and under no circumstances she was going to win. She was determined. That was obvious. Salons are customer service oriented. You have to be this way if you are going to keep your customers. They want the customers to be relaxed by their services. I don't know if Gail got off the wrong side of the bed or if something was going on in her life. She sure took it out on me. I am not going to tolerate this behavior. Nobody should. I wonder if the owners know how she is treating the customers. She cancelled my appointment because she said I did not follow the rules. At this point, I hung up on her. Nobody should ever be treated this way under any circumstances. It was horrifying to say the least. If you want to be abused by a receptionist then I would recommend going here. I am just flabbergasted by the way I was treated. I am in the salon every month. I am not a walk in. I am also surprised that neither of the owners reached out to me. This says it all!

I found Heather through word of mouth, as I saw another Asian woman in Chicago with excellent, long healthy platinum blonde hair and she referred me to her to get my own hair done. I get my natural black hair lightened to a beige shade. You can find more examples of work from her instagram @hair2heart_heather Heather does a great job lightening the hair and lifting the brass without destroying the hair in the process and blending the roots in when doing a root touch up. If you want healthy, long lasting and great looking colored hair as an Asian, I would not go to anyone else.

I've tried several styles and Ms. Ahn perfects the styles every time. Now I stick to the one I like, since I've going to Ms. Ahn for many years (10+). This is premium Korean hair care. There's always a saying "you get what you pay for". I've tried other spot in Chicagoland and it's not what you would get at Kim Sun Young. Sure, I can pay cheaper but the quality I got was not the same, so I always return to Ms. Ahn to take care of my hair. With my digital perm, she explains to me how to care for my curls, and also let me know how the condition of my hair/scalp is and what I need to do to get improve my hair health. I made an appointment about 3 weeks in advance for a Friday morning digital perm. It typically takes 3-4 hours for the perm. With my iPad and AirPod, time flies by while I'm watching the show. They also have a small "earcap" that looks like a shower cap so your ears are protected & my AirPod. I get a cut first, then a perm. Friday afternoon with 3 hair professionals and 2 assistants. They are busy because they are able to work simultaneous while the perm client is waiting for perm chemical to settle into the hair, they can do a hair cut.

The TL;DR is that I was unable to get my hair coloring done and also got a haircut that was not very flattering. I felt I looked better when I came in vs when I came out of the salon. This was all despite the effort I made to contact this salon multiple times beforehand to ensure that they were able to do the hair that I wanted. In January, I had my hair cut and permed in Los Angeles, which I was happy with, but I wanted to also make my hair blonde with this hair style (I'm a Korean American with dark hair). I confirmed with my hairstylist in LA as well as the internet that you should wait a while to bleach your hair to space out the damage, at least ~4 weeks. I currently live in Cleveland, OH for grad school and heard there aren't many good salons in OH for Asian hair. So I did my research, found this salon in Chicago with good ratings, read through ratings, looked through photos, and then first messaged them on instagram to set an appt. I sent them reference photos of the color I wanted, plus a current selfie showing my hair to ask if what I wanted was possible. I also explained I was going to be driving in from Cleveland (took me 7 hours since I avoided tolls) so I wanted to really make sure before I made the trip. I told them also about my perm from weeks ago (it was going to be over 7 weeks since the perm for the appt day I asked for). I also called 24 hours later directly to the salon since I didn't get a response on instagram right away. The person on the phone booked me with Michelle. I then proceeded to explain my situation and told them I sent them photos on instagram. The woman on the phone tried to reassure me saying "it's okay, Michelle can do whatever color. Don't worry about it." I took their word. They also responded on instagram confirming they could book me an appt and gave me an estimate of pricing (starting around $350) and time range (3-4 hours) based on the color I wanted. The day of my appt, I show Michelle my pictures and what I want. She starts rambling about how the color I want is not possible, or needs to be bleached multiple times because my hair color is too dark. I was asking her to clarify if that meant I have to come in on different days to get it done, and she wasn't very clear and eventually just said, "It's okay, we will figure it out. For now, you need a haircut right?" So we cut my hair to a length I was satisfied with, but since it wasn't dried/styled yet, I wasn't sure what the finished product would look like yet. Then we went back to discussing color. First, she tells me, "okay, we can bleach multiple times, but it may take a long time, maybe even 6 hours. Is that ok?" I said yes (I knew it might take a long time so I purposefully asked for their earliest appt time that day). "And it's going to be around $400-500. Is that ok?" I said yes again. THEN she says, "oh, and the bleach is going to flatten your perm, so you won't have your perm anymore." This is when I was stunned and hesitated and asked for time to think. I was already starting to worry about whether the color would actually look okay on me based on Michelle's initial response to my request, but then to also not have my perm that I had paid for before but I still wanted to be a part of my overall hairstyle? I was incredibly disappointed. I was definitely ignorant of how this hair stuff worked, but that's why I tried doing my research beforehand and asked them multiple times, sending them pictures and explaining my situation BEFORE I planned a trip 7 hours away by car. I don't have many free weekends, so this was also difficult for me to schedule. Eventually I declined the color because I didn't want to risk not liking the final color AND losing my perm. But I wish the staff, all the people I talked to here, told me BEFORE I made the trip to Chicago, and BEFORE she cut my hair. I honestly would not have gotten my haircut had I known I wasn't going to get color. I know cheaper hair salons for hair cuts in the area and might've opted for another place if I wanted one (my hair was already short, but the haircut price was still $70). The staff didn't necessarily act rude or anything, but they clearly failed to take my situation into consideration despite all of my effort and wasted my time, money and energy. And honestly I don't like the hair cut. I look like Johnny Depp from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; the lack of layers is not flattering. I have to pull my hair back daily to look decent. I'm just sad this happened and they may be competent at hair, but the inconsiderate communication was really disappointing.

The end result was TERRIBLE. My cousin's hair was tri-colored (honey blonde on top and red all over with black spots) My hair, was fine.
