My husband and I were in town for a grandson's "destination wedding" and found that there were very few places to eat in the area. We hit upon Sal's and had some of the best pizza ever! Stanardsville is a small town with very limited food dining choices. My family enjoys Sals, we've never had an issue with the staff nor the food nor the timing. We prefer their pizza over others in area. It's a good doughy thick crust so thin crust lovers beware. Pizza, is a bit greasy at times but is still tasty! Convenient dining before local high school sports games. Not slow service even on a busy Friday game night. My parents like to eat here when they visit us because of close location, good prices, variety of Italian dishes, my Dad always enjoys the special. The food is okay, but I hate going in there unless it's in full swing for dinner. At lunch time, it's rather slow. Since they don't have anything else to do, the staff will sit at the counter and chat quietly while they stare at you eating. It was incredibly uncomfortable. We ordered pickup from Sal's and it almost seemed like they forgot about our order until I arrived to pick it up. It's about what you would expect from the middle of Virginia. Doughy crust, and super cheap. They have coupons and offers on their webpage too. We've been a few times and after our last visit won't be going back. It is always slow and takes a long time to get the food. This last visit a customer (who said she used to work there) said it's because they put a priority on food that's "to go" since the rest of us are already sitting in the restaurant. This is our restaurant. We love this place. On any given night you will get the best pizza in the world. (Believe me, we've tried quite a few!) It's the place where we walk in and get that friendly greeting. In all the years, we still haven't tried everything on the menu, but the pizza, stromboli, pepperoni rolls - all things Italian are great. Jimmy, the co-owner and chef also makes the most delicious fish entre I've ever eaten. There are frequent new specials, and I'm always tempted. My husband and I travel a great deal around the US and Canada. We always compare every restaurant meal to Sal's. Sal's is not intended to be fancy, it's like the neighborhood restaurant. GET AN ITEMIZED RECEIPT!!!! This used to be a place that my family would stop at least once a week; however, they have really fallen off lately. The food has never been GREAT, but the service was pretty good. We ordered the same thing every week (2 Large Cheese Pizzas for 19.99 and 5 waters). We started noticing each week that the price was changing and going up and the pizza was getting smaller (More like a medium). Finally last week they gave me an itemized receipt for the very first time and I was able to see that they were over charging me for the pizza AND charging me for WATER. When I walk in, they have gotten to notice me, so they ask, "same thing? 2 pizzas 19.99?" I asked the waitress about the price and she said "oh, I'm sorry" and fixed the bill that time....Now after I have been overpaying for several months. We marked it down as a possible mistake and went back this week and again, I asked for an itemized receipt and was overcharged. When I asked the guys at the register about the cost, the owner came over and started getting rude and said you pay whats on the bill. I told him that the bill was wrong and didn't match the menu and that I wasn't going to pay more for the food than what was in the menu (It was $10 more). He told me that the menu prices have changed and went up. I explained that the menu's haven't changed and he can't charge more than what is listed in the menu especially when I took my order they didn't mention and price changes, nor were any price changes posted in the restaurant. He said I had to pay the cost in the system not on the menu because the prices in the menu went up. I let him know that was false advertisement and he backed off and said "well if you're so smart, tell me how much you owe," so, I did the math for him and told him what the cost should be. He kept his poor attitude but accepted that amount and said "for now own, you will pay what's in the system," But, sorry, there won't be a for now on because that was my family's last time eating there. You can obviously see that the business is struggling. There are hardly ever more than one person/family in at a time. They sell box wine in glasses. They buy chips, sodas and snacks from the dollar store next door and sell those items at a higher price. They are struggling and trying to make ends meet, but to me, if you want to survive hard times, you should take care of the customers, especially the regulars. Food that is not very good already, becomes bad food when the customer service is poor also. The food is not worth the hassle or poor treatment you receive there anymore, and if they are going up on prices, it's not worth the price. Make the extra trip up to Ruckersville instead, save yourself the trouble. But, if you do decide to eat there, GET AN ITEMIZED RECEIPT and ONLY pay what's on the menu. read more

The first time we ate at Sal's we were meeting relatives and being used to Charlottesville and Richmond restaurants each person at the table ordered an appetizer. Honestly the servings were so generous our table was full of food and we were giggling like kids as we swapped platters around. Fried pickles, ravioli with marinara...and juicy zucchini and mushrooms. We've been back a number of times and my husband almost cannot be persuaded to try anything other than the meat lovers stromboli which he adores. I love to surf the menu. The seafood pasta was fabulous with huge shrimp and a generous serving of mussels, and clams in a flavorful sauce. The Belgian chocolate cheesecake was decadently good. My daughter loves the tiramisu. We have just never had a bad meal there and it has become a family gathering place. We're two years new to the area from NJ and my wife and two kids have been to Sal's on several occasions. The food is only so-so and we usually experience pretty slow service. We kept trying though, and recently brought our friends and their 2 kids there for the first time after a close kids activity wrapped up. Again, the food was ok, but we had a problem when trying to pay. Each family happened to have a coupon from the 'Attractions' book and wanted to use them. However, the waitress stated that they could only accept one coupon per table (this was not stated on the coupon). We talked to the owner about it, I assume it was Sal, and explained that we just happen to be sitting together and we were both paying separately. He said that it didn't matter and that next time one family should sit over there (pointing to another table). We laughed, but he was serious and huffed away.
