Do you want a cheap, fresh, good place for authentic Mexican food? This is it. I went here for lunch on a Tuesday when they had 1/2 price tacos and got one beef and 2 chicken tacos. The salsa it came with was admittedly mild, but they have like 6 other salsas available at the salsa bar (including a nice hot habanero) so don't fret. The ambiance is fast-foodish. Clusters of somewhat uncomfortable chairs along with booths in a brightly lit room. You order at the counter and they call your name/number when the order is up. Everything seems to be freshly made and I really liked the chicken tacos I had. The chicken was real, not some processed garbage, and the various salsas made it fun. Recommendations: Give larger salsa containers at the salsa bar. When the small ones run out, just order some larger ones. It would be nice to bring a few to the table that people could share rather than having each person fill his or her own thimble. I did not try the margaritas, but I will when I go back. I went to this place with my friend Greg and Chris. There is one opening near me in Oswego, but I wanted to check it out because I am terrible at waiting. I ordered this plate with like 5 enchaladas on it and it was awesome. Each one has its own sauce and was really great. The mole was even good and didn't taste like hershey's syrup. Since my food was all sauced up, I felt like I missed out on the best part. There is a salsa bar with a ton of great salsas. I did get a few and tried them on chips, but would have loved to dump a liter onto my plate. My friend Chris got this metric ton of nachos and he pulled up to the salsa station. There are probably between 8-12 salsas, and I think he tried them all. That mountain of cheesy chips smothered with exotic salsas looked so good. Some day I may even be brave enough to order it. Greg is kinda normal so he got tacos and only had like 3 salsas. We spent about 30 minutes enjoying our mexican fiesta, but then I thought we were there past closing time because they were washing the windows and scrubbing the place down. I looked on the door and they still didn't close for over an hour. They just must really like that place clean. This place was pretty good. I've never been here, but I'm a huge fan of authentic Mexican food. I drove by it plenty thinking it was a small step above taco bell. I. Was. Soooo wrong. The food is fantastic! I tried the taco platter and had it with pork, grilled chicken and a steak taco. Once I got my food I was able to choose from 6 different fresh salsas from "the salsa bar". The grilled chicken taco (with a spicy tomatillo salsa) was super flavorful. I also ordered the guacamole to start. It's delicious and there was enough that I get to bring it home. A wonderful little Mexican restaurant one might not give a second look as one travels down Lincoln Hwy. I'll keep it simple-outstanding and authentic tacos! I had three: pollo, asada and carnitas. At $2 each, bring your teenagers for a great meal that doesn't break the bank. Good. Damn good. Got the chorizo tacos. They had a good ratio of meat to shell / veg. The refried beans had a nice smoky flavor and the rice had a nice taste. Not too salty. A hot avocado sauce was included with the meal. That stuff blew me away. My only complaint is that I've driven past here on many occasions before and never stopped. I will be back. Got the taco combination that comes with rice and beans. You can mix and match your choice of meet for the 3 tacos, but I chose to go with all carne asada (steak). Steak was good quality with no fat, cooked well and a good seasoning. The salsa bar was a nice touch, and I really enjoyed the salsa verde and the hot tomatillo. And besides those there are a few add on options you can add to your meal. Wish there was a few more salsas to choose from, but the two I mentioned were good. Great find! Perfect for an informal taco stop or when you're craving a yummy Mexican plate and don't want to deal with the downtown STC waits and fuss. I loved the Carne a la Mexicana and was pleasantly surprised by their Al Pastor taco, a must for any Mexican establishment. We walked in and it smelled absolutely amazing! We shared a steak burrito... Which was frankly just average. I had a ground beef taco and my son had pork tacos that he raves about. They did have a very interesting salsa bar.... I did not partake in. Next time I think I would try the quesadillas or an à la cart burrito. The staff was very friendly and the place was quite clean. I wanted to try a margarita but I needed to drive so.... Maybe next time. I'm told they have good weekly specials... It's too Bad that I live so far away. read more

Tonight my family and I ordered five meals from this salsa verde even though we have heard bad things about the establishment, however we decided to give it a chance. Not five minutes after sitting down with the family to eat, my dad says he has a piece of cardboard in his food. What he pulled out of his mouth was actually a used bandaid. We immediately contacted the branch, at which point we were met with hostility and complete disregard for the situation on the part of the responding employee. They asked us to drive all the way back to give the food back and were originally going to offer a credit. Absolutely ridiculous. I've been on yelp for a number of years now and this is the first time I have ever had enough of an issue with a restaurant to rate them poorly. If it were possible to give negative stars I would. Love, love, love this place! The tacos al pastor are by far some of the best I've ever had, especially when you eat them there. I normally order the 3-taco plate which comes with beans and rice. The tortillas always taste so fresh and the creamy salsa verde they have is sooo good. We also love their carnitas torta. The meat is so tender and delicious and they don't skimp on it. Another must try is the enchiladas verdes; they're corn tortillas filled with chicken and rolled up, placed on a bed of creamy white queso, and topped with salsa verde or green salsa. Need I say more?! I will add to this review that I've found the food varies by location. I've been to the location on Yorkville and Oswego and they're just not the same as the St. Charles location. I started a new job in the area and a co-worker recommended Salsa Verde to me for $1 tacos on Tuesdays, so I had to stop in for lunch and give it a shot. The building is right off of Route 38 on the north side of the street, you can't miss it with the flashy green paint. The inside resembles a small taqueria, and has an interesting looking salsa bar, which ordering carry out I was unable to take advantage of. I ordered three tacos with each of the three different meats that are available for the $1 special, I believe they were ground beef, chicken and shredded beef. I opted to add cheese and sour cream for an upcharge. The tacos are pretty traditional, they are small with only minimal toppings like onion, tomato, lettuce and cilantro, plus the cheese and sour cream I added. Like many tacos, the shells were much too small for all the contents, so they fell apart and made a bit of a mess as I ate them. Not a big deal, but either I need to get less toppings or they could use bigger tortillas. Either way, I thought the tacos were just alright. I thought the chicken and ground beef were a little under seasoned and plain, while the shredded beef was actually pretty good. I really can't complain since they were $1/taco, but I probably wouldn't want to pay full price on any other day that isn't Tuesday. I will have to try some of the other menu items as well as the salsa bar, since most of the other reviews for Salsa Verde are positive. The location has definitely been redone and updated from the former restaurants that were in this location, and it is definitely very cute and welcoming. On the night we went, a Thursday I believe, it was quite busy. Really enjoyed my first experience at Salsa Verde- I find it to be similar in cost and style to Chipotle- but definitely enjoyed this location more. The employees were all incredibly friendly- and everyone in my group of six loved their meal. One of the things they liked the most was the salsa bar- there are so many items on the salsa bar that you can top whatever you purchase with to add more spice or other fun toppings. The guacamole here is excellent- and I enjoyed both tacos I ordered. We will definitely be back- and then I'll post an update after I've tried the location a few more times. We have been eating here since their grand opening. The past several years their quality has been poor. The steak burrito's had very little meat in them and what meat was there was loaded with grizzle. We threw the meat out and essentially had a rice burrito. This is the 3rd time in the past year we had this experience. We are done with this restaurant. I've been working across from this location for awhile now, and the whole area smells like fresh tortillas- which smells as amazing as it sounds. I finally took the opportunity to stop and try it for lunch, as it's usually pretty busy around dinner when I head home. I came in, and the first hallway smelled a little off putting, although inside had a nicer yet authentic feel to it. Like a family run Mexican restaurant. The woman at the counter was super sweet, very helpful and went above and beyond to let me know some great things I may be interested in, and I found the selection to be plentiful. They featured a salsa bar as well, with many options from a mild salsa to a spicy habanero sauce, limes, onion, tapatio galore. After getting a nice selection of toppings and my drink, I was called for my order and was pleasantly surprised when I opened it on their patio. While a little greasy, had great flavor and quality of the steak. Overall, I had a wonderful first visit and will definitely come here more often! read more

Delicious, authentic, generous servings! $1 Taco Tuesday is a screaming deal. I opted for the nacho meal which included a drink. The cheese sauce is the real deal - not string melted cheddar or the fake orange stuff. There were three choices of pork, two beef and two chicken. The salsa bar not only had a variety of salsas but also an assortment of pickled veggies that complimented the food. The patio was delightful to eat on. A definite new favorite. read more

The steak was definitely better than average Mexican restaurant and the salsa bar was a nice extra touch. I ordered a fajita burrito, which was pretty good; however, there was a really sad and misunderstood side that came with it. The side was a sour cream salad. Downers Grove, IL is a suburb of Chicago, and flying in to Chicago OHare Airport at 7am was a challenge as everywhere near the Q Center was closed. A long flight and not having eaten since the day before had me weak and hangry. The only place available for delivery was Salsa Verde and it was a godsend. I ordered Chile Relleno which had a nice crust on the outside and creamy cheesy filling in the inside. It didn't come with Mexican Rice and I had to order the rice as a separate item. Thank goodness I checked as I would have been sorely disappointed if I opened it up and there was no rice with the Chile rellenos. It only gets 3 stars because the driver would not come in to the lobby and I had to walk 20 minutes to meet him outside in his delivery car. By the time I got to a place where I could enjoy the entree, the food was cold. read more

I sent a Facebook private message with feedback about a week ago. Did not hear back at all. Long time customers. Really enjoyed the one out near Yorkville. Sorry to see the one close in Batavia. Went through the drive-through for a huge rare treat giving the virus emergency worldwide and was very disappointed. Purchased a meal and some additional tacos. The tacos were listed for $2.40 each for the type we ordered very plainly online on their menu and on the window. they charged us $3.10 each for each of those tacos plus tax. I tried to bring it to their notice right away when I realized the receipt when I got back home from the drive-thru and wrote to messenger and they did not respond. In the meal which was in a styrofoam container to go the amount of rice and cheap pinto beans smashed was about a third of the usual small amount in a to-go carry out styrofoam. The chimichanga was filled with El Pastor meat which I asked about and it had enough gristle that I had to literally spit it out of my mouth repeatedly. They have not responded. Ridiculous.That's no way to treat longtime loyal customers. And by the way we're the only people in the drive-thru and there was nobody even in the parking lot. Wonder why? read more
