Salt & Meadow is a lovely setting for a nice meal, with a great bar, great views, attentive service, and lovely presentations of high quality ingredients. It's a terrific spot for a night out or a special occasion. The food is a 'B.' Salads are properly dressed and creative. Fish is fresh. Clams were a salt bomb. This place is so cap. It's a fine place to eat but it is so over hyped. They give you a square of fish the size of a cheeze-it and still run you for 70 bucks. It's actually criminal. I go here for the view definitely not the service. I still love it because on this river you simply don't have a choice lol. This would have been an exceptional meal except for the dog that was begging for food. Someone brings a dog and lets it run loose?? Ok, we ate outside because it was an incredibly beautiful day. The views were stunning. The weather was just grand. A bit sunny, but hey, we were outside. It was all exceptional (except the dog that was allowed to run loose and beg food). The waiter was spot on and we had a great time. We started off with a charcuterie board that was ginormous, varied and tasty. That started the wine bottle off just perfectly. We also shared a crabcake that was an awesome start. I had the scallop dinner. Scallops have a fine line between cooked too much and too little and this was knocked out of the park. My husband took me here to celebrate my birthday. This is one of the fanciest restaurants in the northern neck area. We got the reservation at 8:45 pm (slightly late for our liking as we like early dinner), as the restaurant hosted a mahjong dinner event in the evening. The host was very friendly and gave us good recommendations as we waited to be seated. Ambiance is very nice. We had been here before when it was a different restaurant. It's beautiful during the daylight as they have nice water views. Food was great. We ordered crab cakes on coconut sauce for the appetizer. It was once of the best I have had. I am definitely going to try crab cakes with coconut ginger sauce again. For entrees, my husband has the beef tenderloin and I had the beef short rib with risotto. So delicious. Short rib was very tender and the risotto was very creamy and flavorful. For the dessert, we had peach crips with vanilla ice cream. Presentation and the taste was amazing. Overall, a great experience. The only reason I gave them a 4 star is because of the pricing. read more

We had a great, laid-back experience at Salt & Meadow while visiting the Tides for an anniversary trip. The staff were friendly and very flexible, the food was tasty, large portions, and reasonably priced (considering it is a resort restaurant). For those concerned about price, I'd say there are more than a few value options and small plates like the cocktail shrimp. We ordered the catch of the day (halibut) and duck which were very high-quality. Buttered rolls were also dank - No notes for the chef! Our favorite things about the restaurant were: 1) The finishes - all the furniture is thoughtfully curated with beautiful wood pieces throughout. The prohibition era lockers when you enter are so cool. 2) The lighting/ambiance was perfect for a date night and the music was chill 3) The wine station in the middle of the dining room was unique and refills were immediate. Staff suggestions were great without pushing us to order more expensive wines Only suggestion is that it was cold AF in there... usually NBD but we were ready to get out of there! Would have probably stayed longer if it wasn't freezing Overall would recommend to stop by especially if you are staying at the resort! read more

This is a lovely restaurant. We arrived about 5 minutes early and it was about 10 until our table was ready. It was a busy evening. The staff was friendly and helpful and took time to talk to us. This used to be a restaurant called The Chesapeake and we enjoyed that restaurant. This newer version is perhaps a bit brighter and more modern. We each had the smoky old fashioned with beef tallow. It was an interesting take on an old fashioned. It had a bit of Vermouth and the presentation was great with a wooden lid on the glass holding the smoke inside. They could call it smoke on the water, the way the smoke lingered on the drink. The food was good. I had prime rib and we shared a crab cake appetizer. Dessert was peach crisp and ice cream which was also delicious. read more

We have eaten here before and have had a positive experience. The restaurant is nicely done and servers and eager to please. I ordered the grilled shrimp appetizer and got three small shrimp with vegetables and a very tasty sauce . However, overpriced. My husband got the soft shell crab and he enjoyed it. I ordered the rack of lamb and specifically asked for it medium, not medium rare. The meat came almost raw. I asked. The server took it back, but took the meat off my plate with her bare hands. They reheated it and it was still almost raw. The meat was fatty, raw and chewy. My husband enjoyed the duck. While they did take my meal off the bill, for the prices they charged, and quality of food, I have no desire to return. read more

My husband and I ate at Salt and Meadow for dinner and breakfast during our stay at the Tides Inn this week. The service was fantastic and the food was good! For dinner I had the catch of the "bay" and my husband had the Halibut. Both were portioned fairly and prepared perfectly. We had the tuna tartare for our appetizer and since we were celebrating a special occasion (noted when we made dinner reservations) we had a glass of sparkling wine brought to our table. For dessert we split the lemon curd and I had a cup of fantastic coffee while my husband finished his old fashioned (which was perfectly made). For breakfast I had the egg white., shrimp and mushroom omelet with a cappuccino and my husband had the French toast. Both were very yummy! The restaurant itself is beautiful and the staff were all very polite! We have been very fortunate to dine at nice establishments around the world and this one makes the list! Setting is very scenic but that is where anything good about this experience stops. The appetizer, crab egg rolls were pretty good, but came out lukewarm and the main course, seafood paella was flavorless and served lukewarm. Our server was slow to check on us and when we mentioned the food was subpar nothing was done about it. This was very dissapointing. read more

Would recommend getting rid of the mice. We watched 2 tables next to us move at the beginning. The restaurant was so cold and we requested to be moved. They did not offer to increase the temperature and stated there were no warmer tables. As we finished the entrees, we watched a mouse run laps like Usain Bolt at the Olympics. We spoke with the first manager who stated they have placed traps and he would "catch the mouse with his bare hands if he could." He offered nothing. When the mouse ran past him while we were speaking, he stepped away. A different manager, Kevin, came and acknowledged that there was a mouse, attempted to gaslight us by asking what was wrong with the food, what they could do and then only offering to comp the wine (the only item that was safe from the mouse). Unless the mouse is Ratatouille, the response is to close until eliminating the mice! read more

Chef Kyle has developed an amazing new menu for the renovated Chesapeake room. He has brought new and exciting items to the table. Breakfast included new Benedict's, breakfast burrito and blue corn grits. The crab BLTA sandwich was delicately baked and perfectly seasoned. Dinner had new stars of basil linguine with shrimp, duck, lamb chops and shrimp and chorizo with the blue grits. My only complaint is that we didn't stay long enough to enjoy every entree! Absolutely delightful!! We are looking forward to returning to enjoy all the renovations read more

We stayed at the Tides Inn over Memorial Day weekend and dined both for breakfast and dinner at the Salt and Meadow. I was very underwhelmed with the food and service. I have been several times to the Tides Inn and always looked forward to the food in the Chesapeake Restaurant. The wait time for drinks and bread was close to an hour during dinner service and the food was lacking seasoning and were very small portions. Breakfast was a long wait and my son and I never received our grits even after asking several times. The decor and setting is beautiful. The staff seemed polite but overwhelmed. I will be hesitant to eat on property the next time we visit which makes me so disappointed. read more

I would agree with the other recent reviews - the high prices do not align with the location or service. Even coming from Northern Virginia, the prices were very high. We had dinner reservations (a Thursday evening), the restaurant was noticeably not busy, yet after sitting at our table for 45 minutes we hadn't even received the bread. The table next to us was having similar difficulties. The setting is beautiful. The servers are pleasant. The food was good but small portions. Limited menu as mentioned in other reviews. And the musical entertainment listed in the daily schedule for the Inn was a no show. read more

I am not one to normally leave a non positive review but given our experience here coupled with the fact we contacted the restaurant with direct feedback with little action I am leaving a review here. The restaurants ambience is extraordinary. The view and the new decor is outstanding. However, a group of friends went to celebrate a special occasion and we were asked several times about why we were coming for dinner yet the special occasion was not acknowledged. Minor feedback... but we missed the fun locker gift that the Tides had done in the past making it extra fun to celebrate at the restaurant. The food came out cold, portions were small and we felt as though food what was just so so. We missed the more traditional menu that better encompassed regional food the area has to offer. The service was lacking the general warmth and customer service that we had experienced in the past. When we got home and looked at our bill, we noticed that we were charge $38 for a single glass of wine. There was no indication from our server that that was the price of the wine. I did contact the restaurant manager to give some feedback and they credited the glass of wine yet did so in a somewhat begrudgingly manner. The Tides Inn holds special spot for not only us but many people in the area. Our family has visited the tides for many years and always made the restaurant a destination for special events, holidays, etc. We are very hopeful that the new restaurant makes some corrections and is successful. read more

We waited an hour and a quarter for our appetizers without anyone checking on us at all. My husband eventually managed to find the manager, who apologized to him- not the whole table. I have never written a restaurant review, positive or negative, but after our dinner on 6/1/24, I feel obliged to comment. We have been visitors to the Chesapeake Room many times and always enjoyed our food and the beautiful views. We were anxious to try dinner at the new Salt and Meadow. The new decor is bright and well done (though we were quite happy with the old decor!). The staff was professional and attentive. Unlike some other comments, our food and drink came on time. The duck entree was superb. Now for the negatives. The restaurant has a limited menu and is markedly lacking in local Chesapeake seafood, in spite of their statement that they cater to local foods. There were no crab cakes, no soft shell crabs and the available fish were non-local (halibut, sea bass). I ordered a half dozen raw oysters for an appetizer and these were the smallest oysters I have ever seen. They were the size of a silver dollar or less and did not resemble any local oyster I've ever eaten. The entree prices were higher than before and the portions were smaller. I agree with another reviewer that the prices seem to have come from a New York menu. I ordered two martinis and these were $20 each. That's the most I've ever paid for a cocktail on the East Coast with the possible exception of the Inn at Little Washington. We made a a recent trip to Iceland, renowned for its expensive drinks, and the prices were less than this. $12-$15 each would be more reasonable. Although the prices were a disappointment, we were most disappointed by the lack of local seafood. We'll have to decide when or if we return. read more

Wow, SO disappointed in our dining experience last night! We are regulars at the Tides and always found the Chesapeake Room food to be amazing. We were so excited to check out the newly renovated space with an all new chef/menu. The renovations are beautiful - modern and lovely. I am all for a leisurely dinner, but waiting exactly an hour for a glass of wine (ordered at the time water glasses were filled at the very top of the evening) and bread after asking 4 times for both, is unreasonable. We are no strangers to resort pricing, but we were pretty taken aback when the bill came. I ordered the blackberry salad with steak. There was no menu option to add proteins to the salads but the server said they could do it. The very tiny salad of arugula with a few blackberries and a smear of cheese was menu priced at $20 -- with a small serving of sliced steak became $52 on the check!! My husband ordered a club soda w/ tequila and grand marnier - this concoction as tallied on the check was $39. Kids chicken tenders was $20 but tasty! Adult entrees were extremely small portions and underwhelming but my husband found the salmon tartare app to be delicious. We ordered the chocolate cake for dessert which was also great. Service was beyond slow - allow 2-3 hours for dinner - but our server was very polite and friendly enough. We always look forward to an exceptional meal here at each of our visits but we will turn to local establishments next time! read more
