    Shrimp Artichoke Pasta

Our friend was in town for a week, and he was really wanting a good steak. Since neither of us had been here, we thought we'd give it a try. It was a busy night, with some college ball going on, so we ended up sitting in the bar to watch what we could and didn't really have to wait too long. We started out with some drinks. Of course, I had to try their Midnight Rider Old Fashioned, and gotta admit, it was pretty tasty. My wife ordered a Amaretto Splash cocktail. For an appetizer, we ordered the Ranger Rattlers, which is their version of a jalapeño popper. Not bad but nothing to call home about. However, they brought over a honey wheat bread (or something like that) and man... that was a mighty fine loaf! Warmed perfectly to melt that butter. A good warm freshly baked bread is a known kryptonite of mine. So good! Lance and I ordered some ribeyes with a baked potato, which was delicious. My wife ordered the Shrimp Artichoke Pasta, which I might have sampled a bite or two, and yeah... it was damn good. Overall, it was great to catch up with an old friend. The drinks were good and the food was fine. Service was a bit slow that night, where our server apologized a couple of times, but it wasn't crazy. He was very apologetic and explained why, and we get it. We weren't in a rush or anything. Thanks for the experience... plenty of steakhouses to try out in Tyler and Texas! As always, Enjoy & Happy Eating!

Popped into here, thinking we could catch the Cowboy game and great Saltgrass food! No FOX network in the restaurant so no game, a dried out ribeye, and other fried items mixed in with the fried mushrooms set a poor tone. The great server added a star back. The clean and well maintained restaurant with the classic Saltgrass ambiance really made the negatives seem out of place.

This was not a great visit. We sat at a table in the bar rather than waiting. We did receive fresh bread almost immediately but we had a long wait. It wouldn't have been an issue except the servers/bartenders were playing around behind the bar, the bar was dirty, and tables/bar were not cleared/cleaned when diners left, so not a good look at all. They forgot our appetizer and didn't try to charge us for it, so we just wrote that off. Otherwise the meal was good. We all have off days...I'll chalk it up to that and be back.

Our experience at Prime 102 was comparable to the best steakhouses in New Orleans. The food was great and the service was truly exceptional. We were a party of 7, so we had the opportunity to explore a number of the menu items. The jumbo lump crab cakes, the tuna tartare, the loaded potato casserole, and the lobster Mac and cheese were excellent. One might not think Brussels sprouts would be special, but these were unlike any I've ever had. They were definitely a surprising highlight of the meal and a must have for future dinners. The rib eye and filets were all delicious, perfectly cooked to the requested temperature. The servings of the chocolate cake and the butter cake are large enough to share. Both were delicious. But if I had to pick just one, I'd give the nod to the butter cake as it is a unique taste experience. In addition to the great food, our waiter, Matt R, was outstanding. He was attentive to our needs and pacing of the meal. His advice and descriptions of dishes, when asked, were spot on and very helpful. His attentiveness contributed to an overall exceptional experience. Although it has no effect on the food and the service, the original art deco decor makes for an interesting, special setting. I should also add that the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food and service. I can't say that Prime 102 is the best restaurant in Tyler, but only because we haven't been to any other high end restaurant there. But it's hard to imagine any better. If it were in New Orleans, it would be in our regular dining rotation. We're planning to visit family in Tyler annually. And dinner at Prime 102 will be a mandatory event.

Dakotas, to me, has always been understood as the classic bougie restaurant of Tyler. I've driven…read morepast it off Old Bullard Road many times, but I have never eaten there. Being a kid in Tyler, your parents don't ever casually suggest Dakotas as a place to stop and eat. It's their private date night spot if they feel fancy. It's for them and them alone. They moved out of Tyler a few years ago, and now I am in control of my choices and my destiny. They had a $200 gift card to Dakotas that they never got around to using before they moved out. Foolish of them. I swiped that sucker and booked a reservation in the same breath. While visiting Tyler for an extended weekend, I got a table for two on Saturday at 6:30 with my girlfriend. Upon entry, they have free valet, but I'm too normal of a person to do that. We were seated pretty quickly after getting there, right around our reservation, at a table that put our backs toward the wall and blocked us from other tables, giving us a little more privacy than a typical restaurant. We both got our first drinks of the night ordered with an appetizer of their fried calamari. I got an Elder Fashioned, an elderflower and gin-based drink styled like an old fashioned. I love an elderflower-based drink, but sometimes they can be a little too over the top and bright purple or pink. I liked how subtle and classic this one felt. My girlfriend got a Choc-nilla Old Fashioned with chocolate and vanilla bitters. It was sweeter than her normal old fashioned, obviously, but she thought it was incredibly tasty. As we waited for our appetizer, we enjoyed some of their bread, which was a tall and beautiful loaf with garlic butter on top. It was very delightful. The amount of fried calamari they served us was insane. Way more than either of us needed. It could easily serve four to six people versus the two of us. The marinara sauce on the side was great, but it paled in comparison to their red pepper aioli cream sauce that I swear you could drink. Typically, fried calamari can look like weird onion rings, while the ones here were more straight. We both had a Caesar salad that was maybe a little well dressed, but with some cracked pepper on top, it was very good and worth it between the calamari and our entrees. For our entrees, we both had their soft shell crabs. Their crabs were fantastic and something I have never had before. I thought they served us a little more angel hair pasta alongside the crab than I needed, but I won't complain about extra food. I was super impressed by the flavors and the crispiness of the crabs. To wrap up our night at Dakotas, I ordered a Paloma that was sharp and classic, while my girlfriend ordered a Black Widow, a tequila and hibiscus drink with some muddled jalapeños that was quite a heater. Not a drink for the faint of heart. A lot of the food and options at Dakotas have a little bit of spice to them, so be warned! As we were leaving, we noticed a musician playing on the patio. I thought how nice the patio at Dakotas would be for a few cocktails after dinner elsewhere. That almost seems idiotic, though, because Dakotas is excellent. If you have an opportunity to give Dakotas a chance as a Tyler resident, I recommend it. Between the two of us, with our entrees, our salads, our appetizer, our four drinks in total, and our tip, we were below $200, which, to me, feels like a very fair price for what you get. Just exactly what can one say about a perfect meal?…read more First off, I'm ashamed I can't remember the name of this drink. It's a variation of an Old Fashioned. Bunny's "God of Fire." Sorry, had stop right there and look it up. It's double smoked Ironroot Prometheus bourbon, angostura & walnut bitters, and a toasted marshmallow. I don't know who thought this up, but I want to kiss them. It's a little smoky and a little sweet, but subtle. And the longer it sits, it gets almost a little creamy. Especially nibbling on the toasted marshmallow before and after. I tried both. Sublime, a little surreal. I feel like I need a long night drinking just these in slow deliberation. That might be a good hot summer night activity. The deviled eggs? Honestly, and maybe I should be ashamed of this, I can't remember if I've ever had deviled eggs with ham in the mix. Or for that matter, with Texas caviar. Like, what even have I been doing with my life? The Wagyu Tartare came with house okra relish on the corner of the plate, drops of fried egg mayo, these little tiny blue flowers called Borage blossoms, that I, a grown ass man, somehow much closer to 50 than I ever planned on, just got fucking giddy about. But, I tell you what, don't you dare scoop some of that Rosewood Ranch beef tartare onto one of those in house made sumac dusted kettle chips with a dab of that okra relish, take a bite, nibble that toasted marshmallow, and then sipped the Bunny's God Of Fire, and then tell me you didn't step thru a motherfuckin' looking glass of some kind. Softly surreal. Comforting. Sublime. Also, just FYI, you don't really appreciate the okra relish until you try it by itself. There is a crispness to it that is almost etheral. And then you feel like you understand the sensory play of texture and taste a little better. My entree was the 14oz Texas Akausi strip, with the hand cut fries, and horseradish mayo. Seasoned with high quality fine French sea salt and black pepper, pan seared in Wagyu tallow and basted with thyme, smashed garlic clove, and butter, before finishing in the oven and sitting in a container of melted Waygu tallow before resting on the cutting board and being sliced. Read that again, slowly. It sounds like a night in bed with Jane Mansfield. I don't know how else to describe. Why yes, the fries are amazing. Of course they are. Everything is amazing here. I feel silly, like I'm just on here hyping one of my favorite people and food spots, but Oh My God, have you even been here? Everything is great. But if I'm being honest. For true true. That softly medium rare Akausi with a dab of that horseradish mayo, another sip of Bunny's Fire Of God. It's a sensuous experience. For dessert, I got the chocolate mousse, and the homie got the First Amendment Lemon Pound Cake, which Lance McWhorter came up with in honor of Afroman winning his case against "The Man." As if I needed anymore reason to love him. The chocolate mousse, I'm afraid I could eat this by the tub. Like, I brought home half my steak and fries I was so full. Wouldn't have even thought about dessert had I been anywhere else. I damn near licked the bowl clean at the table like a dog. Just embarrassing. That glob of white stuff, are super cheesy grits. I'll post some pics of food we got to see as it was prepared later, but, I will say, yes, it was delicious. Especially on the fries. Honestly, I think I can make a meal of the eggs and tartare alone. And Bunny's Fire Of God. Absolutely stellar meal. But more than that. It's an experience. One I highly recommend. I'd give it a scale rating, but there's no scale for this. Not in these parts. This place is in a class all it's own. It's another beautiful day, East Texas. I hope you're enjoying it. #ztfu #sabaileyproject #iloveyouetx #writerfoodiegunguy #foodiesofetx #hippiebarbarian #foodiesofdallas #foodiesofig #easttexas #tylertx

There's plenty of nice local establishments, but some can be pricey and some are just more casual than you want. Scott Williams has perfected the restaurants of Tyler that are balanced between affordable and still quite nice. He got his toes in the water with FDs, before expanding into Javi's, Twelve, and now the fanciest of them all in III Palms. I thought of all those options, Twelve would be the most unique and tasty for my girlfriend and I. We went in an hour before they closed on a Sunday and were seated immediately. We weren't too hungry so we didn't expect to be there past their closing time, and we were ready to go. Our waiter was quick and attentive, bringing us water and helping us decide on drinks from the bar and our order. He also showed us their insane over-the-top whiskey menu. If you like whiskey, give Twelve a shot I guess. To order, I just got their 'Osaka Style' Pressed Roll while my girlfriend got a Sushi Bowl Salad. We got Sweet Potato Fries to share. As for drinks, I started with their Monkey See, Monkey Do, an impressive and firm beverage, while my girlfriend ordered their Destin Dream, a fun Pina Colada-like drink. It wasn't long before our food came out. The sushi was beautifully plated with some wasabi and pickled ginger on the side. I destroyed all the rolls. They were all very fresh and very high quality, which was remarkable for their $13.50 price tag. My girlfriend's sushi bowl looked insane. She ate most of it, but I filled the gaps and devoured the rest of it. The sweet potato fries were crispy and heavenly like all sweet potato fries usually are. I felt adventurous and I got a second drink of their Rose Garden, which was simple but flavorful. Compared to FDs, the menu might be a little more sea-inspired and more adventurous, but I think it leads to better, more unique food, especially with offerings like Oyster Rockefeller and a sushi bar. I also know Twelve does a great brunch as well, so keep that on your radar. Ultimately, as the bill came, the price was very manageable even with the alcohol. It's nice that you don't fully have to break the bank to have a nice meal in Tyler thanks to places like Twelve. I rate it a 12/10. Get it? hahahaha... RIYL: A slightly adventurous, but affordable night out.
