We went here for lunch after looking around Lake Palestine for some land. The ambience is very attractive and feels like a Texas restaurant. We were seated upstairs and it was cold because the AC blows directly onto the tables. The complimentary chips and salsa were very good. Salsa has some kick and the chips were fresh and not greasy. The wife had chicken and waffles and really liked it. I had the chicken fried breast and it came out hot. The crust was crispy. The chicken was tender and moist. The gravy needs some salt and pepper because it was pretty bland. The mashed potatoes and collards were excellent. The kid had quesadilla and liked it. Our server Eli, who worked very hard going up and down the stairs for all the tables upstairs, was professional and efficient. I bet she is tired at the end of a shift after going up and down stairs for hours at end. I'm reviewing this spot while I'm here. Ambience is a beautiful casual feel. It wasn't packed when I got here. I sat at the bar and had the best service. I ordered the skirt steak with rice and queso . It comes with tortillas on the side so you can make tacos if you like. All of the food is super tasty and fresh ! The steak was cooked to perfection. Food was ok, but not delicious as expected. The service was awful when we were there, and it wasn't even busy, we almost walked out.

I really appreciate the workers accommodating my family for my "un-rehearsal" rehearsal dinner. We had over 30 people show up, and our waiter was a rockstar getting our orders. The room we were in was good for our size. We are the kind of people to walk around tables and it was a little crampt, but it was still nice. However, I later found out that family who was paying for it had to put a dollar amount they had to spend in order to have the small area. We tried to meet their goal, but ultimately they had to pay the entire amount even though not all was spent on food. I feel as though they should lower the goal options and be more flexible. read more

This is a really cool spot in Tyler, Texas. I was immediately greeted by friendly staff. I was seated at a table with a great view of a large screen tv. My waitress, Taylor was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the Green Chili Queso for an appetizer which came with fresh made chips. I asked Taylor about the 1836 Chicken Sandwich. 1836 is a local favorite for my fiancé and I. We go for lunch often and their weekend brunch is our favorite. We love bringing our friends and family from out of town here because of their diverse menu and atmosphere. My personal favorite is the costa chop salad, pictured below. I would love to give 5 stars if the service was consistently good. Staff is always nice there is no denying that. But sometimes it takes to long to be greeted at the table and/or servers have too many tables so refills may take long or service just lacks because of it. One of the owners is there often though and always wants to make sure you have a good experience. read more

This restaurant appears to be popular and fairly value-conscious. The service was very good but expectedly slowed down a bit as lunch hour arrived. The surroundings were pleasantly rustic-modern, but did little to celebrate the significance of 1836 to Texas, or even Texas itself, for that matter. The rock music in the background added to the obfuscation. Not much "Texan" here. However, the place was crowded, so maybe it was not an opportunity missed. The green chile queso was outstanding, and the fried chicken sandwich was very good, although a bit messy to hand-hold. The low-country shrimp and grits offering was good--especially the fresh shrimp. The smaller portion availability was appreciated and plenty for lunch. It was flavorful but a bit soupy, which I believe is probably characteristic of the dish. My score was about 3.7, so I rounded up due to the effort. Worth trying more things, for sure. read more

The shrimp and grits had decent flavor, but I wouldn't call it authentic low country shrimp and grits, having lived there several times. The ratio of grits to everything else was wrong. We have enjoyed 1836 Kitchen since its opening. This evening's experience was so far beneath our past meals here and very disappointing. From being sat at a back table that was often overlooked by wait staff, watered down drinks, and overcooked/bland food. We travelled an hour one way to dine here for a much needed date night, only to leave frustrated with the experience. We hope that management considers how to better train staff so that they can regain the level of food and service diners once enjoyed. read more

The service was excellent and the restaurant is pleasing to the eye with a modern country time look. We ordered crawfish queso, chicken rolls and two kids meals with a spicy Margarita. Nothing really stood out besides maybe the Margarita but, tasted like bubble gum for the first few sips. Pricing is adequate and nothing was poorly cooked. Just seemed pretty plain Jane. Christian L was our server. Coming to the ambiance the place was set up nice and neat. The girl at front desk was courteous. We initially thought Christian was lost but he was checking on us regularly and also saw us almost finishing the free nachos and brought in the refill. Side of Queso - 4.5/5 it was nice and good. Chilaquiles de pollo - 4.5/5 dint enjoy the chicken Tinga on it. Beans has meat in it so substituted with fries. Overall a decent experience. Visiting the Tyler area over Labor Day weekend and decided to eat brunch at the 1836. What a great choice, the atmosphere was amazing and the food/service was better. We started out with the crawfish queso appetizer. My wife had the Shrimp Tacos which she said were excellent. I had the Country fried "Yard bird", mashed potatoes with white gravy. Horrible experience. We were so exited to try this place after reading reviews and hearing by word of mouth about how good it was. What a disappointment. We were seated in the bar area (which we didn't want to be) and it appeared that the bartender was the only staff on the floor. When we told her we didn't want any alcohol with our lunch, her response was 'oh'. She seemed rather disgusted that we weren't wanting to day drink. She spent the majority of her time laughing and having a grand time with her bar customers, which I get since they are her bread and butter, but if you don't like sober patrons, put a real waitress on the floor in addition to the bartender. I ordered what I thought was buttermilk fried chicken (since that's what it said on the menu) but what I received was chicken strips. The menu did not clarify that it was chicken STRIPS. When I expressed my disappointment, the bartender only said 'we have gravy you could eat with that'. Having spent many years in the service industry, I can tell you that's not how I would've treated my customer. What could have been said was 'I'm sorry it's not what you expected - let me bring you a menu and I can bring you something else if you don't like chicken strips. Apologies for the confusion on the menu'. Nope. She didn't offer to let me choose something else and more importantly, didn't care. Not. One. Bit. On top of not being what I thought I ordered, the chicken strips were terrible. The breading was funky and the chicken under the layers of breading was dry like the Sahara. I mean, Chicken E has waaay better strips... and that's a sentence I never thought I'd write... I give 1 star...well, because I can't give zero...and for the green chili Queso. That was actually good, and it's a good thing because that's all I ate for lunch. That and my non-alcoholic soda. I left hungry, disappointed beyond belief, angry about the rude and hateful server/bartender, and feeling duped by all the great reviews this place has. I can confidently say that I won't be back and will be sure to relay my experience to anyone who asks. Overall: NEVER AGAIN. Pros: The food here is top notch. We tried the fried green tomatoes and crawfish queso. Tomatoes weee pretty standard but the queso was excellent. For a meal, I had the chicken and waffles with a side of fruit. The chicken was chicken tenders, not legs or thighs. They gave me like 5-6 chicken tenders which tasted ok.
