The islands house a…read moretreasure of trees and plants including a 300 year old Gumbo Limbo tree and 150 year old Sabal Palms. Since 1942 the islands have been a wildlife sanctuary managed by the Audubon Society under a 99 year lease until 2041 from the Bingham Blossom Bolton family. Visitors are not allowed to step foot on the islands or launch from them but you can kayak and canoe between them. As you paddle by you can see coves and tidal pools that shelter native and migratory birds. Over the years invasive species and garbage have taken over the islands. Years of lightening strikes and hurricanes have made the center of the islands impenetrable. There is however a plan in the works to remove invasive species and replace them with native plants that will restore the islands. Audubon also wants to create an oyster reef that will clean the water of the Lake Worth Lagoon by filtering it. Plans for hiking trails and educational displays have been scraped because Palm Beach zoning won't allow it. For now the parking lot has been closed and the area is surrounded by a chain link fence with no trespassing signs. There is no way into the area and to make sure no one tries I saw the police keeping a close watch. This may have something to do with the islands close location to Trumps Mar a Lago. It's so close that reporters have used the island to camp out on as they reported on the President. It doesn't seem like anything will be done with area soon. The nearby Snook Islands have been restored to great success. If you look out at them you can see that they are covered in birds and they already have the oyster beds in place. Hopefully something similar is in store for the Bingham Islands.

I'm glad it wasn't too buggy. We didn't see alligators. Canoers, kayakers & boarders on the water said they saw gator(s), but we never did. So, I don't recommend renting bikes if you want to see gators. Many people visit the area and bring their own kayaks & body boards. Don't dress to impress. This is a true nature experience. 4 stars cuz bikes can be dirty, one lady had her chain fall off & we helped her & my husband's handlebars loosened up & had to start walking his bike. I guess the only way to get help on the trail is to call their rental center, so don't leave the area without asking how they can help & meet up in case your bike is not rideable. I rode back & had a worker take him a new bike, but I had to show him where he was. It was a nature experience! There is a waiver to sign before you rent. Maybe their fine print gives information about how to deal with problems on the trail? I didn't read it thoroughly, I thought it focused more on the late fee.

We ordered parts online for our car's specific make/model via the Yakima brand website, but after receiving the parts from our online order it was clear we needed some direction and assistance from a seasoned professional! Enter Native Water Sports! We've seen the store several times but never went it. We decided to go and we are so glad we did. Ted, the owner and operator, graciously helped us get the proper parts and told us he'd call us back to the store once received. About a week later, the parts were here, and Ted and my husband arranged a time at the shop. He not only helped install the rack to ensure that it was safely mounted, but he also showed my husband how he did it and was very hands-on! It took them about one and a half hours - and we were good to go. He showed us how to use the straps, how to take the pads off/on, etc. You can absolutely tell Ted is a well seasoned professional kayak guy - not only that, but he's friendly and just a genuinely nice person. For any kayak needs - car racks, life jackets, kayaks, and pretty much any kayak accessory known to man - Ted is your guy for honest help!
