I'll never forget watching the continuation of game 5 of the 2008 World Series here when this was known as Santino's. I mean I guess it wasn't that long ago, but it feels like a lifetime has passed in between. The bar that night was full of familiar faces. Groups of friends from both Wilson and Wyomissing neighborhoods had been unified with a common aspiration. After nearly two full days of agonizing rain delays, we were all about to witness the Phils bring the city of Philadelphia its first championship in 25 years (since 1983, before so many of us there that night were even born). This isn't Santino's of course, but it's impossible to separate those memories, which is probably the case for many of the folks still coming here who can remember fondly the mingling with family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. I'm glad this remained a restaurant and didn't turn into another spa or something. It's a bit harder to go to a spa and think hey I used to drink Jaegerbombs right over there by the koi pond and speaker playing soothing rainforest sounds. You can tell just by the sequence of naming conventions (from "Santino's" to "Tino's" to finally "State Hill Craft Cocktails & Kitchen") the kind of vibe they're going for here. The "Tino's" era, though brief, proved that you could keep the neighborhood charm and just slightly ratchet up the presentation, especially in the food and bar departments. Over time the menu has shifted from fine-casual Italian to more upscale comfort food, with wagyu meatloaf, lobster mac & cheese, and the always elegant, always dashing meatloaf patty melt. State Hill Craft Cocktails & Kitchen or whatever iteration of dining establishment will be there 15, 20 years from now (Luxe Carwash expansion perhaps) will bring together members of the community that wouldn't ever otherwise cross paths. New friendships will form, and old ones will strengthen. The atmosphere was electric that night in Santino's nearly 20 years ago. Everyone was elated, even people who didn't watch sports were happy because they could see other people were happy. For one night we could push everything else aside, the weight of responsibility and care lifted from our backs. I would give it 2 1/2 star. Possibly a three but that's pushing it a bit. The chicken piccata was a good meal but it wasn't chicken piccata. The calamari was fine shavings of calamari coated with fried breading and a strange heavily Parmesan cheese sauce. The gnocchi was eh.... The whipped feta did not add anything great to it. Someone at our table asked for bread and they told us after looking at him in a very confused way... responded with, " sure we can get you bread, focaccia bread, but it may take 20 minutes." The main thing is the water took 10 minutes to get to the table and our drinks took a half an hour after the water came. One appetizer came out 20 minutes after that and then another 25 minutes after that the dinners came out. All in all... We didn't get any food for over an hour and 15 minutes. The wait staff and manager had no idea how slow everything was and we were the only table that ordered. Everyone other table was eating already. The ambience is OK... I came here Friday night with my daughter, and the atmosphere and the food were delicious. For an appatiser, we got the tempura-battered cauliflower florets, sweet & spicy soy glaze, and the Local Pierogi potato & cheese, sage and onion brown butter, parmesan. For dinner, we got the Billionaire Smash (2) 4 ounce local waygu beef patties, truffle aioli, bacon onion jam, smoked cheddar, romaine, tomato, onion, and the Stuffed Gnocchi truffle pesto alfredo sauce. The entire meal with 4 alcoholic beverages was around $100.00. Great price! I wish we lived closer. Forgot to mention our server, she was very nice as well. read more

What happened to this place?! In the beginning, the food and drinks were delicious, but something has gone terribly wrong. The drinks were awful, and the food was honestly a joke. I paid $45 for two crab cakes, and they were not good. To make matters worse, they were drowning in this awful combination of canned corn and sliced potatoes. My husband ordered a Caesar salad with salmon, and the salmon came out RAW. Thankfully, the manager did take the salad off our bill, which we appreciated. But a $31 salad should not be served with raw salmon in the first place. ‍ This used to be my favorite place to eat, which makes this experience even more disappointing. I am very aware how difficult the restaurant business is but they were not hitting the mark. I have returned recently and I was blown away with the quality of the food and the cocktails! They have hired Chef Jason Moss who is one of the best Chefs in this area! The food was phenomenal. The taste of the food was exquisite. Went there last Tuesday evening, party of 7. Took about 15-20 minutes to get seated but we were ok with that. We were seated at a high top table which is fine except that the AC was blowing hard right down on us. We asked if they could turn it down, they said they didn't know how. Also the air dryer in the restrooms ran the entire evening.....lol Our waitress Khianna, came by and we placed our drink order and food at the same time. We waited 30 minutes for our drinks and there were nothing they had to make just open or pour, She never came by to check or either did anyone else. They were either way under staffed or just didn't care about us. Finally she came with drinks, said quickly sorry for the delay. Really! The food was vert high priced and just ok at best. I had the scampi and there were 5 shrimp with the tails still on, the noodles were Lasagna noodles WTH! Not a lot of food so we asked for bread, they charged us for the bread. So many of these reviews tell the story of our visit to State Hill today. Sorry I didn't check Yelp before getting our reservation. From the time we placed our order to receipt of our food was over 40 minutes. Restaurant wasn't crowded. Many empty seats all around. The waiter was polite but curt, never followed with questions when things were obviously not going well and avoided tending to the patrons with any degree of interest in their job. The crab and corn soup was so garlicky, my wife couldn't eat it. No question regarding issue or reason the entire bowl was left uneaten. My short rib bolognese was so bland. The risotto was gummy. The Flavor offered nothing worthy to describe, just bland. More like pulled beef that someone forgot to season. When 2/3rds of the bowl was pushed aside, the only question asked was "would you like a box " No response when I said no thank you. Plate was hot but the food wasn't. Last 2 times at State Hill were a disappointment. Dirty Upolstery on the chairs, very unwelcoming greeter, the new entree, crab cakes, falls far short of expectations, but good atmosphere and server. This place got off to a good start, like some marriages, but has settled back to being just so so. read more

Great spot for a lowkey but upscale dinner. Our server was fantastic. The salmon was excellent, and the dessert we shared was a highlight. I had dined here when they first opened and things clearly got better! Bonus is, it wasn't bad the first time. The good news is they expanded or perhaps fixed the parking lot. Much better now. We went on a Wednesday evening and the bar was full but we got seated quickly. They have a nice beer offering as well as cocktails and wine. My better half wasn't a fan of her lavender honey gin drink but the server quickly and without fuss remedied that. The service was very good the whole time. The food was really quite excellent. We started with some Parmesan brussel sprouts and they disappeared fast. The shrimp and grits needed a little salt and pepper but other then that, yum yum and yum. The barría flat bread was awesome and we had chicken and pasta in a lemon basil cream sauce, simply fantastic. The place is nice, it wasn't too loud and we sat at a high top table. Went online to make a reservation-6:00 Saturday night for two. And checked 'anniversary'. Was there only once 2 or 3 years ago. Remember going to the right into a dining room. This time, hostess seemed to have some type of problem deciding where to put us and then took us to the left into what I would call a cocktail lounge. Ok, not going to make a stink on our anniversary. We were put at a large circular table up higher off the ground. And the chairs - or stools more correctly - also of course higher. Let me add, we are both over 80. Still in reasonable good health, but if people came in who used maybe canes or who had more mobility problems, don't know where they would be put. If they fell off a stool, State Hill could have one heck of a lawsuit. The hostess tossed our menus on the table and without another word, left. The waiter came by quickly - a low talker, nice guy but could hardly hear him. We both ordered Mediterranean chicken and my wife got a salad (a very big one it was). Food came promptly, all at one time - the salad with both our dinners. So does my wife eat the salad first and let her food sit and get cold or the food first and then the salad for dessert? (We ended up taking the salad home.) The chicken was, well, chicken. Tasteless chicken at that. And broccolini, which is best described as an unsightly, tasteless (like the chicken), barely edible vegetable. Does the nicer dining room still exist? I don't know - did not think to look as we left. But doesn't matter. We won't be back. About $100 + $20 tip (other than being a low talker, the waiter was nice.) And 3% was added to our bill for using a credit card. Note to management - just raises your prices 3%. Putting it on the bill just doesn't look cool. And teach your service people that salads come first unless otherwise requested. Tell the one male waiter to speak up. And if the nicer dining room is till there, put people there if they are there for their anniversary, not in a cocktail lounge (aka sports bar). Chose this place for our weekly couples dinner. Not bad, not great. Nothing wrong with the food but it wasn't different than most other restaurants. Group had crab cakes, filet, wagyu meatloaf, and salmon. Crab cakes were fine but not amazing. Filet was cooked well but the accompanying potatoes and vegetables were slightly less than room temperature. Meatloaf was very good. Salmon was, well....salmon. Nothing memorable about it. Service was adequate; some minor oops that just exacerbated an already mediocre experiment. Diet instead of regular Coke in a cocktail. Asked for red wine to join the steak when it came out; got the glass 2/3 of the way through the dinner. Had the soup du jour wrong. Runner brought out entrees but left the empty salad bowls on the table. Again, not bad, but not great. Probably won't be back as we try to find places with something a little different. read more

I have never had such pitiful looking food we couldn't help but laugh. My salmon had a pile of white rice with not a single speck of flavor added to it. My guy had the filet mignon that came with a pile of wilted soggy cold spinach and the most offensively pathetic serving of fries that was somehow presented without a follow up of "It's just a prank, the camera is over there." All seven of those fries tasted somehow like air, not even like a potato. We didn't bother complaining because it's like if your kid makes you a meal and you're like oh shit I can't even get mad because I think they think they did their best. I will say that our server was great, one of the two cocktails we tried was really good, and the dessert was decadent and delicious. The Chardonnay was served warm which again brings into question the establishments name. No complaints on the food or service. At about 6.30 a couple showed up and began setting up a music system. There was already music playing at an acceptable level not to mention several TV's with various sporting events. At 7 the "entertainment" started. Whatever crowd they were playing to hadn't yet arrived and the volume was now at a level that made conversation difficult. It seemed like a stupid idea for 7 on a Friday night. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the pierogi appetizer and truffle fries on the side. Absolutely filled with delicious flavors. The ambiance was also very nice . Very open and inviting, although it was a mild temp day and the heat was on, making it a little uncomfortable. The service on the other hand was sadly not good. Our server, Ana seemed like she was a bit intoxicated while my party was there. She was glassy eyed, face flushed, slurring a little and was not focusing or remembering things well. She initially had put in and brought me Brussels sprouts instead of truffle fries. She was speaking to us very awkwardly, and lingering and giving some people in our party weird looks and responses. I'm not sure what all was going on. We enjoyed ourselves and had a great conversation, and enjoyed the food. Unfortunately though, the service was not good at all. This restaurant has a lot of potential. The atmosphere is very sophisticated with old city charm. It would definitely have been a spot I would have gone back to if just for the ambiance. The drinks and food were also very good. They have a very extensive cocktail list with MANY espresso martini options (my favorite). I got the hazelnut espresso martini. I was here for brunch, so for food, I got the cauliflower rice bowl. All of the flavors of this dish were balanced impeccably and my eggs were poached to perfection. Unfortunately, the reason I am giving this restaurant a lower rating is because of the service. When people go to a restaurant, especially a more classy and upscale venue, they expect great food, atmosphere and service. Our waitress was very nice, but she lacked experience. Everything was the longest wait. For her to take our order, for the drinks to come out and then the food. She forgot my drink, so that was slightly longer of a wait and then she forgot my cousin's meal entirely...which was odd because she put it into an electronic device. I do not know if it was her fault or the kitchen, but it is very uncomfortable when the whole table gets there meal and there is one person missing theirs. Unfortunately, I will not be returning. Came on Valentine's Day. Our server was outstanding, I believe his name was Mike. Very attentive and helpful with recommendations. The ambiance was really nice as well, dim lighting which I loved. We were very excited to try state hill for the first time and I think our expectations were a little high. We started with the fried gnocchi which was delicious. Then for entrees, salmon & chicken. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the presentation was beautiful. The only mild complaint is I wish the brussels sprouts were cooked a little longer but that's a personal preference. The chicken, however, we felt was a miss. I know it's a "safe" choice but there wasn't much flavor, a little over cooked and the risotto was underdone with a lot of "sauce" pooling on the sides. Overall we enjoyed our experience and will be back to try some other options. Was so excited to try State Hill Craft as a new spot in my old stomping grounds (oh I miss my old neighborhood.....and this restaurant made me miss it more!). We went for my fiancés birthday, especially because they have an AWESOME selection of espresso martinis. One of his fav drinks and the cocktails were so good. He tried both the top tier espresso martini (can't recall the name but made with Crystal Head vodka) and the salted caramel espresso martini. The Crystal Head- skull is right.....TO DIE FOR!!! For appetizers we had the Lobster Seafood Dip and the Fried Cauliflower. The dip was good, appropriate sized portion, a unique twist was the offering of rye bread with the dip- yum! And the cauliflower- out of this world! A star! Any next time in, this will be ordered!! By this time in finishing the apps we were pretty full, but were happy to have bites of entrees.....and still happy for these leftovers for later. Ordered the Billionaire Burger and Lobster Roll. My fiancé finds trouble at restaurants with burgers because he is a rare-rare guy. But in food safety, this burger was cooked a juicy medium rare. He enjoyed it. Fries were great! And the lobster roll- HELLO LOBSTER!!!! Piled high!! Yummers! I am not a tarragon lover either and the mayo mixture for the lobster was just enough. Superb! Service was great as well! 5 stars for food and service! Only downside, seating was slightly awkward where we were placed. We were sat at a two-top that was the end cap of the large middle booth. My fiancé seated in the end of the booth and my in a chair in the aisle. Just felt like we were kinda hanging out there, lololol. And also- negative remark on the parking. Insufficient, and I would not want to be a neighbor and have people parking on my street all the time. But really those small complaints are nothing compared to how fantastic our meal was! Here are the good things about last night...I absolutely love what they did adding the large bar/patio area in the back and additional parking. And I wish this team/ownership well in the future. It's a great spot and was always a go to in the past. So.. NYE and $90 per for a 4-course dinner. A little steep for Berks County ($600 for 2 couples...all in with drinks and tip) but heck its NYE. All 4 dinners were good as were the salads and half of the apps. Our waitress was very pleasant and as attentive as she could be as it appeared she had quite a few tables. Ok now the issues I noticed. About two weeks before NYE they posted a menu for the 4 courses but showed three (the desert course was a note saying stay tuned for details on the special deserts! ) They never followed up with what they were in fact even on NYE the wait staff didn't know what the deserts were or even if they were included in the 4 courses! Our first course was salads...three Caesar's and a wedge...well the food runner came out with 2 of each. She said I'll be back with the other Ceasar but 5 minutes later she wasn't, so we saw our waitress and notified her that we were waiting on the 4th salad... took about 10 more min to get it out of the kitchen! Seems communication wasn't happening. Second course had 4 options all looked delectable. WE had a similar issue with only 3 (I think the runner could only carry 3 at a time) coming out and us waiting a bit for the 4th. Two of us had the Tempura Shrimp which was to have a Yuzu aioli which unfortunately was missing from both! We asked the runner but again she never came back with it. The shrimp tasted good despite the no aioli but were over cooked and tough. One got the Tuna Agua Chile which really needed more "Chile" as it was very bland and unfortunately wasn't good. The Arancini was good as he ate every bite. Third course...you guessed it...only three meals came out with the fourth 5 minutes later. As mentioned above the Filet Oscar and the Lobster tail dinners were good. All in the experience was OK and will not keep me from giving it another try but could have been good had the staff been coached on the menu ahead of service ( it was a special NYE menu although they also had an ala carte menu which I'm sure didn't help the kitchen out) and if the food would have come out together. We're talking a 4 top not a 12 top which would have been understandable. Oh yea and they had a DJ but he was oblivious to the fact that no one was into what he was playing. The good news is that the volume wasn't high so we could still talk. He should have walked over to a few tables and asked...same for the management...they need to touch the tables to see what is going on... read more

We booked this place the day before Mother's Day. We came at 1pm & didn't realize they had a limited menu before 2pm but we all found stuff we could order. The ambiance of the place is nice however you won't miss the construction taking place in the back when you arrive. Our waiter was disappointing & we all made comments about whether or not we'd get things we ordered or if they'd even be right. Somehow ordering cups of tea was hard for him to handle. Table condiments like vinegar didn't exist to bring us. Jam for toast during brunch hours somehow didn't exist & needed to be made and we never got it. None of us ordered cocktails for fear of how long that would take or if they'd be able to make it. We had our reservations booked a few days and he seemed unsure where he had available to sit us when we first arrived. I don't know how much of this was due to the waiter who I hope was new or the restaurant itself. Overall everyone had lunch and was happy to spend the day before Mother's Day there with my mother but I think next time I'll find somewhere else. read more

We had dinner with friends last week and arrived for an early dinner and were seated promptly. Shortly after our friends joined us we were informed that we were being moved to accommodate a larger party. We started to order and were informed that some of the specials were no longer available. Outstanding dinner spot and bar in Reading. I stayed at the Fairfield Inn last night and they provided a list of local restaurants. State Hill was not on the list, I just happened to drive by on my way to another restaurant and thought the place looked cool and was much closer to the Fairfield. I'm glad I did. Great atmosphere and bar area. Superb bartender and a lot of fun, interesting people hanging at the bar. Cocktails were great and they also have a solid wine selection. I had the Fried Cauliflower appetizer which was awesome. The sauce was outstanding. I had the filet entree which was also outstanding. It's just insulting - most of the cocktails are $15 dollars or more, but because of all the ice, they don't amount to much more than 5 sips. This used to be Tino's Pizza. A few months ago they did a refurbish they have more expensive food now and a nicer interior. The quality of the food is much better. I usually go for Trivia on Wednesday night. The serving staff is friendly and efficient. I do have a mild complaint. The bar side of the restaurant where trivia is held has elevated booths on platforms. I'm in a wheelchair and have to transfer to the booth to eat. Luckily with help from friend I usually transfer but some people might not have the luxury. It doesn't deter me from going it's just a slight inconvenience. They are well known for their large variety of flat bread pizza. I've had the billionaire burger which is still the best burger I've ever eaten in 25 years. Fries are great too. They come with a ranch aoli sauce. Very nice time. Just bring your wallet. read more

Worst meal ever, and service was not better. Had to ask and wait for silverware and water. Took at least 20 min to place an order. So disappointed cause we took friends that were never there before. Crab cake special was so salty couldn't eat, other food was dry, etc. The band was amazing and atmosphere was good but waitress could have cared less. Always recommended this place but will be awhile til we try again. Even spoke to manager that just apologized but hopefully spoke to chef. read more
