Salzer's is fun to look at, but I hardly ever leave with anything since it's priced higher than other shops, AND priced higher than many online shops (even considering the cost of shipping). I often come here to look at records and while in the store find them cheaper on eBay and Discogs. In a world of eBay bucks and Discogs free shipping it's hard to pay double for records (used/new). Come check it out, judge for yourself, but for me I just never get excited about coming since they are just pricing records too high (discount records included) and I'd rather drive elsewhere. read more

This is an amazing store! It has a great selection of music. I do not know of any other music stores that are still around. I am not counting Big Box stores like Best Buy. Here are my reasons to shop at Salzer's. #1. Buy local. Studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally-owned business, rather than a nationally-owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses and service providers which continues to strengthen the economic base of the community. #2. An amazing selection of music on LPs and CDs. Super Wowie Kazowee! #3. T-Shirts - Fun, music oriented, silly, and nostalgic. These shirts sure brought a smile to my face. #4. Posters. I saw a Dad & son enthusiastically perusing the posters. #5. Jewelry. Affordable, cute & reasonably priced. #6. Smoking Paraphernalia. Hookas, pipes, & bongs. Super cool, large record store with mostly new releases in all formats. I was visiting from out of town and went on Black Friday/National RS Day. Found great discounts on new/used LP's, but was disappointed in the size of the used 60's-70's surf/psych and r&b selection vs new but did find a few records in both formats. Typical over priced record store. Seen this place for years, I'm an avid used record collector and the average price for a used record here is $9. Not bad , but that's for the stuff that obviously isn't selling. Records that were used that I've bought at other places in the same condition for $7 was going between $15 and $20. Example, just bought a used Bruce Springsteen album, a week ago for $9 at another store. Here it was $25. Same condition. I understand gotta make a profit. It's a family owned business so I gave them that 3rd star. Just cause I didn't find any deals doesn't mean someone else won't . Give them a try. They've got shirts, posters, stickers, journals, all kinds of stuff. Sure the younger generation loves this place. read more

I absolutely love the legendary Salzers. I especially love how they support local artisans and artists by making their unique items available. I love their record selection. They have a great selection of tapestries. They have gifts for everyone from an earth witch to grandpa to your cat. They are good at keeping up with the newer trends in cannabis related products. They have an adult toy section. I left a ton out. It'd be less time consuming to list what they don't sell almost. If you drive by and have never been it'd be silly not to stop. I wish I had the cash for a puffco! Anytime I need something that Salzers sells I go there even if they may charge a buck or two more because I'd rather support them than their shabby competitors that do not contribute to our community. read more

I have to stop in here every time I am in Ventura to pick up a record, which is several times a year. Great selection of records, books, jewelry, clothes and other things. My husband and I only have to go here for Christmas gifts to do all of our shopping. I wish there was one closer to me in LA. The people who work here are also very nice and helpful. I have always loved Salzer's but never took the time to review. I guess they don't really need it because their place speaks for itself - bunch of cds, records, movies and nostalgia of picking up an album. But, today was a great experience. Went in to look at turntables because my wife recently got me a starter one and we both agreed we loved this and wanted to upgrade. Richie was so helpful in explaining the different turntable options, preamps, speakers and all that comes with this cool new hobby. More than anything in a time when you don't get to socialize as much it was cool to talk music, sound and equalizers. Great job Salzer's on hiring great people who genuinely care about making a great experiences. Be back next week. read more

Salzer's Records is one of my favorite places to shop since I move out to Ventura. I make it a must to stop in at lease once if not two times a week, as their constantly rotating they're stock. They're used pricing is really good, and you can often find gems in they're discount bin. They keep up to day with all new releases and offer fair competitive pricing. Plus, it's my favorite place to go for RECORD STORE DAY! Besides music and movies, you can find a wide range of collectibles upstairs. So this is much more then your basic record shop. This place is fantastic. I don't even know what to say about their inventory selection other than eclectic and awesome. Just walking through here is an event. It's the perfect place to go for buying gifts for that person who your just not sure what to get them. Home of a yodeling pickle. True story. Upstairs is like a HUGE Spencer's It is actually damn amazing. I have lived in the Ventura area how long now and never been inside Salzer's? I used to drive by it every single day getting on the 101 freeway at Victoria. If you like supporting local businesses this is totally the place for you. This store totally reminds me of a local Tower Records for those who remember Tower Records. The bottom floor of the building is the music section and the upstairs is the part where you find all the "unique" stuff. I do not really have a need these days for records or any other physical music (most of mine is digital) but if I ever did this would be the first place I would check. I will not be coming back here for the music though...I will be coming back more often to find out what else unique stuff they have. It is all probably stuff I could do without but it is all in good fun. If you are in need of music, singing pickles, fake mustaches, custom jewelry, custom "glassware" or adult stuff the second story of Salzer's is your place. I need to spend more time here. :0) read more

Salzer's is a Ventura Staple for the Music Lover, they have survived the death and resurrection of 8 Tracks, 45's, LP's, & CD's... but I'm thinking cassette tapes are a thing of the past. We've watched as stores like the Warehouse & Sam Goody's departed our community, but one thing that Salzer's did was stick to what it knows best and that's the people. While trends come and go, we as people always reflect on our youth of a better time and it brings with it a need to hold on to a piece of that history so we never forget what made us into who we are today... music has always been a big part of my life, while I'm not an artist, it doesn't deter my love for singing, or for playing the air drums in my car as I'm thrashing my head around to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. While this review doesn't necessarily tell you in detail about the inner workings of the store... it should give you an understanding as to why people love it. I have a love hate relationship with this place. I hate going here because I love looking through and reading everything they sell here. My husband wanted to pick up a couple items as Christmas gifts, and I insisted on staying in the car because it's absolutely not a good thing for me to go in. I couldn't hang; my will lasted less than 2 mins. Downstairs, they have records of every single artist/band you can name. Books and calendars and posters of some pretty awesome themes and people are here as well. Upstairs is where I usually go. The merchandise here is unique ranging from "Coffee makes me poop" mugs to "When I count my blessings, I count you twice" gift bags. I waste so much time here looking at everything and everything here makes me laugh. I got several items to help complete my Christmas list. They have fast check out service here. And there are always several workers walking around answering questions and helping with fulfilling requests. read more

Spent over an hour in Salzer's just yesterday while I was in town and my god - their record collection is just outstanding. Born and raised in Ventura, now live in LA, Salzer's has always been an institution in my mind that honors alternative lifestyles. Spent my early adulthood here: connecting with friends over music, finding oddities in the gifts section, even bought my first hookah here. Love this place and everything it represents - AND, now as a novice vinyl enthusiast, I understand why vinyls have been its bread and butter so long. I started coming to Salzers as a little child way back when Jim had a small store in Thousand Oaks, and then when he had a small store in Oxnard on Gonzales, and then when he opened up on the corner of Valentine road and Victoria (Current location) and ever since, even before they remodeled the store, closing the entire 2nd floor and then reopening it with the rail where you can look down onto the bottom floor. What I usually buy when I go to Salzers, I go in and look through their CDs, and yes, I still purchase CDs, even though I listen to Pandora and such. I also go upstairs and buy incense, and lighters, pipes, and supplies for cleaning out my pipes, like pipe cleaners, and filters and such. I always go looking through their jewelry and lotions and oils, and they have these really amazing carved boxes that I love, to store things inside of. I wish I was cool enough to work for Salzers, part time after my normal job, because I would, but I am no where near as cool as the people who work at Salzers! They're all young and beautiful and hip and cool and I just love their personalities. Next time I go there though, I am venturing into the naughty sex shop upstairs in the back and buying myself a new toy! Oh yeah! Okay, first the positives. My favorite thing about this place is they have tons of used CDs for really cheap. I spent close to an hour just looking through them and I had to stop myself because there were so many of them and it would probably take another hour at least. They have lots of vinyl that are in great condition. Most of the vinyl is brand new. They also have a really cool selection of t-shirts and posters. Upstairs, they have a huge selection of junk you never knew you wanted. Now let's shift to the negatives. To begin with, I encountered a very tan and wrinkled woman outside. She was wearing a bikini and smoking who knows what while she mumbled strange things. I tried avoiding her, but she was right in front of the door. Also, the used CDs didn't seem like they were arranged in any specific order. They were just all piled onto the display cabinet. Another negative was the selection of music they had. There was a very large range of genres, but the majority of it all was heavy metal and punk. I'm into collecting records from the late 50's to the late 70's, and most of what they had was new. I was looking for stuff like Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and Led Zeppelin IV, but they were nowhere to be found. The customer service wasn't that good, but I didn't really want it to be good anyways. I'd prefer being able to look through all of the CDs myself than to have some guy ask me if I needed help. If you freak out around people who listen to dark, gothic, hard rock, or punk music, this is not the place for you. If you're from Portland, you will find yourself comfortable and at home here. I only wish it was friendlier to classic rock and jazz music than it is to death metal. I would come back here if I'm looking for another record, but I'll search craigslist first. read more
