When I first walked in, I immediately noticed all of the natural light coming into the room. It really added to the outdoorsy ambiance. The employee at the front desk was super friendly and was quick to get me set up. As for equipment, grabbing shoes was easy (pulled them out of the storage cubes to the left of the front desk), and they provided a harness as well. I'm not sure if the staff normally does the walkthrough on tying a proper knot, since my friend and his friend did it for me. Nonetheless, I do like that they have that area separate from the main climbing area. Helps to take the pressure off a little bit if you're new. There seemed to be dozens of different climbing paths to choose from, with signs at the bottom indicating the level of difficulty. I found that particularly helpful since, as a newbie, everything looked hard. Also, the people I observed and interacted with on the floor were extremely friendly. Really great vibes coming from the community here. The pricing, based on information from my friend, seemed reasonable, since it included the gym and classes. However, I live in Elk Grove, so I probably will stick to visiting this place only now and then. Recommend giving it a try, though!

It ended up being sort of like a hot yoga since it was upstairs, but the instructor was really good. I was definitely sore the next day from it, which doesn't always happen with yoga classes.

Body Tribe changed my body and the way I think about fitness. You can get a pretty good idea of…read moretheir general attitude by checking out their website http://physicalsubculture.com/, but of course everyone has their own unique experience and for me I cannot say enough good things about the style of exercise, philosophy and spirit of this gym. I was a fairly competitive athlete as a youth but after high school for me (and I imagine many young athletes like me), the focus on exercise really became weight loss because I wasn't playing a game or practicing for anything, and had never really been all that outdoorsy or athletic beyond softball. The only reason for me to do something physical became to lose weight / keep weight off. This mentality doesn't really work, or didn't really work for me, and I had not felt like I had my weight under control since high school. I think this mentality is ultimately problematic for a lot of reasons, but I think the biggest reason is that it is unsustainable. You burn out because you are not really enjoying what you are doing, and you are not connecting the physical exertion to anything more than a superficial goal. Body Tribe really changed my mentality and I feel like with the new perspective I have that I will never fall into an inactive rut again. I started going there when my friend Courtney became a training intern. I had been working out at 24 Hour Fitness a lot for about 3 months and had lost about 10 pounds by doing mainly cardio. I was feeling pretty happy with myself because I was being quite diligent and feeling good, even running a couple miles a week, but I knew I needed to step it up a notch. On my first workout at Body Tribe I was blown away by how different it was than any other workout I had done. Crossfit is a lot of plyometrics and activities that feel natural to actually working or doing manual labor. Now, that may not sound completely desirable but ultimately it makes more sense for building strength and working out all aspects of your body, rather than isolating one muscle. When you are done working out, you feel like you actually built something. I believe that "something" is your spirit. Everyone that works there is amazing, and they all have a different style. My body is completely different than it has ever been. I am strong enough to run 5 miles now, and went from a size 12 to a 6, not even losing that much weight but building muscle. More than anything though, I don't look at the gym as a chore anymore. I genuinely enjoy the challenges Body Tribe presents to me. If you have a New Year's Resolution to change your body or maybe your just curious, you should really check them out. They have really reasonable rates and terms, and lots of introductory workshops / new member orientations.

If you're looking for a pure barbell training gym, this is your spot! I absolutely LOVE that they have an open gym membership, although I do highly recommend either joining their classes or getting paired with one of their trainers. I joined as an open gym member and decided to enhance my program by teaming up with a personal coach/trainer and I couldn't be happier. And if you can't do either of the above, they offer workshops on Saturdays to train you in various lifts. Formerly known as Body Tribe Fitness, this place now operates under the name Health Works. Don't fret, it still offers the same warm & inviting community atmosphere as before, along with your essential olympic / powerlifting equipment. This is a place for those who believe in strength conditioning and working towards overall wellness and fitness. Most people who attend this gym are well versed in the language of weight lifting, kinesthetics, and physiology, so it's safe to say that you will be in good hands if you enter as a novice. And although their open gym hours are not available in the early mornings and weekends, they are VERY accommodating of your schedule. So if you let one of the trainers know about your training needs, they will be more than happy to help you out. Hands-down the best gym, not only Midtown, but all of Sacramento!
