We rolled into town and stayed at the Best Western. We asked the staff for pizza recommendations and they said they had just ordered from Sammy's. The service was fast and helpful. It was busy and they let us know the pizza and breadsticks we ordered would be about 25 minutes. It was spot on. We order the Sammy's Special to go and it was delicious. The crust was thin and crispy. I can only imagine how good it would be fresh at restaurant instead of to go. The breadsticks were thick and fresh. We did order Alfredo sauce and got pizza sauce instead but it was still very good. I will definitely come again when we're in town for lacrosse. read more

This place has always been a go for my family. Healthy portions and well made food. But lately things seem to be going backwards. I got a pizza last night for instance, and there was such a small amount of cheese on the pizza that I could see the red sauce just as much as the cheese (see picture). There were a bunch of younger kids working in the back, so maybe they just aren't taking their time or measuring as much as normal... but regardless, when I pay over $27.00 for a 14" pizza? I expect it to be darned good! I mean, that cost me almost 2 hours of working to afford that pizza. And that's what I get? I'm going to start going to the blueberry bowl in deer river from now on. And their manager Katie, is a self-serving b**ch of a woman who is more interested in blaming the customer for being upset than actually listening to the problem. She hires low wage 15 year old girls who do not understand the menu. Not only is their quality low, relatively speaking, but they cannot seem to get their orders right. Twice in a row I have ordered take-out, driven 20 miles out of GR to home, only to find out they botched the order. So, if you want fast food pizza, maybe order from Sammy's, but if you would like to enjoy your dinner, find another spot. I had been to Sammy's last fall and was very much looking forward to returning. My previous visits have been "Ok," nothing spectacular, but fine. So while my expectations were reasonable this visit was very disappointing. Our server was friendly, attentive and able to quickly respond to our questions related to the menu. Unfortunately, she did not ask my preferred temperature of my Tavern Burger and that's probably where things went "south"...way down south. My Tavern Burger (see photo), ordered without the bun and with waffle fries, arrived quickly. That's the good news...I suppose. The burger was overcooked (Very overcooked), obviously chewy and dry. The stack of flavored bacon only camouflaged the burger and the side of "special sauce" did nothing to change the flavor of the burger. We visited on Friday, July 5th at 7:00 pm. The hostess and server both told us it would be about 45‐60 minutes for our order. They were correct. The pizza was well worth the wait. One of, if not the best, I have had. My spouse had the chicken Alfredo. Not the best she's had, but not the worst either. The place appeared to have expanded and remodeled since our last visit. We usually eat here at least once a month and we always get the same thing. Tonight i ordered a cauliflower crust like always and they made a GF crust pizza instead. I called them back to see what could be done the manager told me that they woul make a new one for us but give them 1/2 to get it done. I agreed to that. Went back to get it and they insisted that it was a cauliflower crust and they hadn't even started making the new one. The manager was condescending insisting that I ordered the wrong crust. Since my wife has a gluten allergy I know what I order. No offer of a refund or any apologies at all. Very disappointed in the food and service tonight. Not going back anytime soon!! read more

I have been to a few Sammie's and they don't usually disappoint. This place was clean and updated. The pizza and chicken are so good, they should just remove the other items from the menu. We enjoyed chicken this time. Delicious broasted chicken. We also had a couple drinks. We had issues with the soup and potatoes had to be sent back for not being warm enough. The manager was informed that we had issues but did not stop by to apologize or discount the bill. I think they have some room for improvement but good overall. read more

Great food - 4 stars! This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Grand Rapids. Sammy's is a small Midwest chain that's been around since 1954. Wow, they must be doing something right to still be around after 68 years! The modern version is a complete restaurant with a full bar and a nice dining room. I've been to Elk River before but this was my first time at the Grand Rapids location which has been baking delicious pizzas since 1984. GOOD: The real standout - hands down - was the pizza! I got The Macellaro Pizza, essentially Sammy's version of a meat lover's pie. It was really good. My soup of the day was great too - creamy Potato Sausage Soup - yum! It was definitely what the doctor ordered after 4 hours of white knuckle driving in a blizzard. AVERAGE: I tried a Hot Salami Sub too. It was good...but not great. I ordered some Tiramisu for dessert. Again, it was good...but not great. It really wasn't authentic Tiramisu either. My dessert was essentially a chocolate cake. I think I understand this. Real Tiramisu is a real pain in the ass to make and to maintain so it doesn't get soggy from sitting around too long. For what it is - chocolate cake - it was good but not a stand-out. Sammy's also has pasta, burgers, and some other stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again to grab another pizza and try some pasta or a burger. Thumbs up! - Maxx read more

We got sat right away around 8:30 on a Friday night. Server was attentive and quick to bring mozzarella sticks out and a large Canadian bacon pizza. Pizza had a thinner crust and cut in squares. Pizza was delicious! Mozzy sticks were standard mozzy sticks. The only downside was the price seemed a little high $20.65 for a large and $11.50 for mozzy sticks. Great place to eat. Pizza is awesome. They have a buffet available on weekends and Monday evenings. The salad bar is probably my fave from the buffet. The dining room is probably the largest space. The bar area is kinda small. Service has always been good. They also make up their pizzas frozen so you can grab and take home. The place went thru a huge remodeling and addition. Previous pizzas were a little under done so i asked for my pizza to be well done .my exact words were well done. i picked up my Pizza and paid for it. i brought it to my car and i smelled something like burnt toast . i opened the box and there was this burnt ,black crusted pizza i wouldn't feed to my dog. How could anybody even send that that out the door.I brought it back in and a lady at the desk said ,We have brick ovens and thats what you get when you ask for well done. Sammy's pizza is always fresh and hot out of the oven. Their pasta is excellent and portions are big. Service is friendly and timely. The bar area is really nice with plenty of tv's for sports and the bartenders are friendly and make a nice Old Fashioned. I recommend the Crew pizza. read more

We are really enjoying the new Sammy's Tavern atmosphere! We went from going once every few of months, to going at least two times a month. The bar is exceptionally organized and clean. The food is consistently excellent. It is evident that the owners have put their hearts and souls into making their business the best it can possibly be. I've been to this location a few times now while passing thru town, I always get the lunch buffet and it never disappoints. Usually it is a basic salad bar, soup, a few pasta salads, chicken wings, a dessert and a few thin crust pizzas to choose from. All you can fit in yo belly! I love thin crust pizza & their Za. is good! Fast & friendly service. Hubby ordered a burger there once, it was huge he ordered waffle fries they looked yummy! Came here for dinner with my family on a rainy night and left very satisfied. The place was really busy for a Wednesday night- always a good sign in my eyes. You can also see the staff cooking in the kitchen, which I also consider a good sign. Sammy's offers a variety of pizzas and other traditional Italian dishes as well (pastas, strombolis, sandwiches). Pizza is thin crust, doesn't over-do it on the sauce, and my veggie pizza's toppings tasted very fresh! Lots of siZe options... Personal size, small, medium, large, and family size. I didn't try the salad bar, but they offer this option in addition to their larger salads on the menu. Everyone enjoyed their food greatly, but the service was the best part! Visited here August 17, 2019. The server was quick with everything and very friendly. We ordered mozzarella sticks for an appetizer and a super large pizza for dinner. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious. We even asked if we could have the toppings different for 1/3 of the pizza and different for the other 2/3 and their accommodation was very much appreciated.
