I flew into Detroit for business and had only an hour to grab lunch, so visiting the original location in downtown Detroit, where Detroit style pizza was 'invented' wasn't a possibility. This outpost would have to do. On a Thursday at 2 p.m. it was almost empty. This became more obvious due to the incredibly cancerous size of the restaurant. Bad sign. I sat at the bar and the most wonderful and sweet bartender waited on me. She was so helpful and nice ... in a Midwestern kind of way. The pizza (pepperoni ... old style) came out and I noticed that it looked like something you'd get at a ballgame or concert. Nothing special looking about it. However, the taste was amazing. It tastes the way I remember pizza tasting when I was around 10 years old ... so good and flavorful! I def. would have judged a book by its cover had I not tasted it. The cheese is very good and doesn't taste cheap. Sauce is acidic and no issues there. The crust is buttery and spongy. The only issue I had was that the toppings were super stingy. I think pepperoni was $3 extra on the small 4-slice pizza. When it came out, I was bummed out by how little pepperoni was on the pizza. Despite the cheapskate topping percentage, the pepperoni was good. Slightly cupped, a bit of a smokey taste and reminded me a bit of Prince Street Pizza in NYC. (Although I give Prince Street a slight edge in the taste) The house beer was pretty good as well and tasted like a cross between Blue Moon and Allagash. It comes in a frosted mug, which is a great touch. Even better .... when the bull came, the waitress had added a lunch special cost, which brought the cost of the pizza and beer down 25%. I never even noticed. I am already craving another Buddy's pizza. Hope to come back one day because this is delicious.
