i came here for my friend's birthday with a reservation on a saturday. it seemed like it would be difficult to get seated without a res on a weekend. the host was a character and the servers were all really nice. other reviewers say the restaurant feels outdated, but i would say it feels more vintage (not a negative thing). we were served quickly, starting with complementary bread. the bread was really good; we ended up getting a second plate. the olive oil dip was fine. i preferred to use the bread as a vessel for sauce from my main dish. since they were out of the duck ravioli, i ordered the chicken francesce, which is similar to a chicken piccata. i opted for the broccoli as the accompaniment and asked for no cheese. the sauce was quite good; creamy and citrusy. it paired really nicely with the capers. the chicken was very tender and well cooked, although a little soggy (tends to be what happens for this kind of dish; no real qualms there). i was able to finish the whole dish without it sitting too heavily in my stomach. as someone who doesn't love italian food, i would come back to this place. one note: the prices for the mixed drinks were not on the menu when we went. my friend ordered a beverage that he said was just OK that ended up being 19 (nineteen) whole american US dollars. read more

When you step into this restaurant, you will be stepping back in time. It is like you step into 1994. It is dated but that nostalgia can be welcome sometime. We were at a party of seven and the service was OK. The menu offerings were OK. Most of the folks in my party thought their meals were just OK. We only had an hour and a half and were able to get drinks, appetizers, and entrees- all within that time. We ordered the calamari and crab toast as appetizers and I'd say my favorite was the crab toast. The calamari was just okay. Picked this place as a short walk from The Lyric for an evening show. Booked a table for two on Open Table to be sure we had a reservation. Arrived early before dinner time rush on a Saturday. Initially, they wanted to seat us upstairs, where there was no AC, then we were ushered to the basement. I declined and was about to leave when they agreed to seat us on the main floor. Either diners call and request the main floor or they prefer to save the tables for the main rush. If reserving via OT, ask for the main floor. Staff are friendly and attentive. I am leaving here fat and happy and warm. The waiter was great! Super attentive and speedy. The restaurant itself was cozy and welcoming! Very retro and Italian feeling. We sat upstairs and it was so cozy. It was nice being able to see the whole place. We didn't have a reservation, but thankfully there was an open table! Definitely recommend if you go on a weekend night! It was jumping. And for good reason. This is some of the best Italian food ive had in baltimore. The bread and oil? Oh my goooood. Finally had a chance to check out Sammy's after being a bit Little Italy adventurer! I really wanted to love this place. The prices were good, the reviews seemed good, and it was close to The Lyric. We arrived a few minutes before our 6 pm reservation and were seated promptly at a two-top right next to the kitchen...and practically in the personal bubble of another two-top next to us, even though there were other two-tops on the restaurant open the whole time we were there. We were so close to the other table and the server literally couldn't get between the tables and had to reach over my husband's shoulder to pass us things. We tried to order the $40 bottle of house Super Tuscan and were immediately told that we should order the $48 bottle because the house one is awful. Um, then why is it on the menu? We ordered Judge Oshrine's eggplant because I love eggplant and burrata. The cheese looked more than standard melted mozzarella than burrata, and there was a thick layer of bitter rapini under it that made the dish hard to eat. I ordered the linguine con vongole with white sauce. Again, a disappointment -- it was so tart from lemon that I only ate a couple bites. Some salt and pepper would have balanced it but there were none on the table. My husband had the seafood fra diavolo. He said it was the good, and the bite of scallop that I stole was tasty. I ended with the tiramisu, which was amazing. Highly recommend. Overall, we spent $133+tip on a bottle of wine, an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert, so I can't complain about the prices. And the service was very good (other than the weird wine thing, which wasn't done by our actual server.) Unfortunately, the cons outweigh the pros, so I can't imagine we'll go back. read more

I am so glad I finally made it to Sammy's. From the service to the food, I was completely and overly satisfied. I was thinking about my next visit before the bill even came. Our server was attentive, even on a packed night. He gave great suggestions. I ordered the Ravioli (Mushroom/Brown Butter Sage style) which I loved. I was full by the end of the meal, but could not pass on dessert. It was some sort of lemonberry cake with cheesecake as well. Either way, I would order a hundred slices, and never be tired of it. I've been to this location of Sammy's (there is another location in Hunt Valley) twice for dinner. Once over a year ago for dinner with a friend before the symphony, and then again last week for dinner with a larger group (7). Their menu is large, lots of Italian classics and specialties. On my most recent visit, I had and very much enjoyed their pappardelle bolognese, which was classic, simple, and totally delicious. I also tried my friend's chicken calabrese (chicken cutlet with assorted peppers, onions, potatoes, and roasted garlic), which was really good as well. I've had salads and buratta and other pastas, and everything I've tried has been really tasty. I really appreciate their Italian wine offerings as well - I had a lovely Montepulciano with dinner last week. The restaurant is old school (it's not chasing trends), but it's comfortable and classic. The service is also great (I sat at bar with a book for a while before my last dinner since I arrived early, and the staff at the bar were really friendly). Sammy's has been a Baltimore staple since 2006. Many dishes on the menu are named for regulars, including judges, since the restaurant is just a block or so away from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Made a reservation since we were feeling nostalgic for that classic Italian American dinner that you don't quite get in the DMV. The dining room is definitely a bit loud, cramped, and the staff are true to the theme, but I can't say I had a bad dish. I got the papardelle with sausage added while my partner got a chicken dish I can't remember now. We also had bread to start (so warm, so good!) and got scallops as an app. We finished off with cake and a cannoli, and definitely brought home the leftovers from dinner because this was a heavy dinner. Came here again as a team this week. Ms Val was not here tonight so we definitely missed her. We sat in a basement like environment that made me feel like I was at a teenage party. It was nice to have a separate space as a large group but I definitely wouldn't want to sit here if I didn't come with a group. It felt like someone's parents were going to come down and get us in trouble or something. Service and food were good but everything was not as amazing as the first time. Ms Val seemed to really be an essential piece of the smooth family style but nevertheless all dishes came out and the staff was always available. Like a plate of slime. Equally as inedible as the pasta Luna. Took one bite and by then had lost any appetite I came with. I was charged for the entree even though I told the waitress how bad it was and obviously hadn't eaten more than one bite. The only thing that was good and served warm was the bread. The service was chaotic. We were seated and waited about 15 minutes before anyone came to our table. Finally.someone came to take out order and then right after someone else came to take our order. Then, three times in a row, we were brought items intended for other tables. We had to leave for a show before our entree arrived. Several other tables were clearly frustrated to be late for the show as well. Food was great. Also in the basement it was so loud it was uncomfortable. Randomly picked this place for dinner. It's old school italian and it wasn't super packed on a Thursday night. We decided to split a calamari app, I got a white sauce vongole and my bf got an eggplant Parm. Calamari was interesting. It was fried up with bell peppers and onions and honestly I liked that spin on it. I liked my pasta vongole fine (maybe too much sauce if that's a thing?). My boyfriend didn't like his eggplant parm as much as he said it was a little too oily for his liking. Service was good, no issues there. This isn't located in the little Italy section of the city or else I would say there are maybe better options for Italian food. Came here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised! I'm not generally a huge fan of Italian food but the food was very good, and very reasonably priced. Customer service was excellent and attentive. We had a birthday in our group and they did the whole birthday cake slice with a candle as we sang to her. We were a large party of 10 and although there was a bit of a wait for our food, they got it all right and everyone enjoyed the food. Very cute decor. Portions are large enough for two meals, maybe even three. The only thing you may need to plan ahead for is parking! Since it was a Sunday evening, I was able to find free parking around the corner closer to University of Baltimore on Maryland Ave right across from Preston Hall. There is street parking but depending on the day/time it can be hard to find. I ordered the Papardelle Alfredo with Shrimp and Crab for $26, with a slice of chocolate cake that was so rich and delicious. I'm pretty sure gratuity is automatic for large parties as most restaurants do so keep that in mind. It's certainly possible to come here and get a meal for less than $30. Great food in Mount Vernon. The main floor is two stories hight with lots of large round tables, they also have an upstairs balcony area, and - I recently discovered - a more intimate downstairs (with bar), too! It's a busy joint and the main area can definitely get loud, but it's got a great energy. I was surprised by how great the duck ravioli were (it's a really well composed and balanced dish), and the warm bread and dipping oil they serve every table is SO DELICIOUS. I've also gotten the eggplant caprese appetizer and spinach ravioli entree, which weren't bad. Looking forward to coming back and trying more on the menu (or just getting the duck ravioli)! read more

It's Valentine's Day! So as I'm driving to dinner I get a call from Sammy's, they are in the weeds and curious if I'm still coming. This should have been my clue but we forged ahead with the 60min trek. We arrive at our 6:30 tee time and are seated right away. After that the experience went south with spotty service, that wobbly table that requires 4 bar coasters and realizing our table was a last minute creative squeeze despite my reservation from last month. Food was mediocre in general. Bread and butter were great. We got the Sally Salad and split it...pretty good if you like that goat cheese. Also chose the muscles but they arrived at the same time Sally did so they got warm and were decent despite temp. By this time we're sorta content so split a dinner choice of Chicken Toni Tina that had some great cutlets but we thought the white sauce was bland and floury. Note: Side order of pasta rigatoni was nice and tasty. Skipped desert and then waited and waited for the check. It was a rough night for service and the place was stacked. Once we did check out the older gentleman serving as Host hinted that it was a bad night. He apologized and don't really need to but he knew the restaurant had shortcomings this Valentine's Day. read more

The bread they serve is absolutely delicious and was nice and warm. We all had some variation of wine, I was pleased with my choice. My entree was the vodka pasta & it was one of my favorite vodka pastas I've had!! They gave us a bowl of parm so of course I was liberal with that. Also tried the meatballs, the servings were generous and I was stuffed by the time we were finished. Would definitely come back anytime for my Italian food fix. read more

Extremely disappointing birthday dinner with a wonderful accommodating server. Even had to pay for a single piece of cake without any candle. We've been going to this location for several years, traveling 40-minutes from Odenton to get my favorite Judge K's Veal. This time I was embarrassed to have brought my wife and two guests. We ordered a Calamari. It was way overcooked and extremely rubbery. My wife's Flounder Franchise was extremely acidic (way too much lemon used) to the point she couldn't finish it. One of our guests ordered Chicken Parm with sauce on the side. The cook decided to use Provolone. Unusual but OK. However, she asked them to remake it using Mozzarella, which they happily agreed to do . That said, we had to wait an extraordinary long time for the replacement. The replacement had two globs of partially melted cheeses. Back it went, meanwhile our friend had to stair at the empty table while we were able to eat. The properly melted Chicken finally arrived. There is no excuse for that incident, at the time restaurant only had two other tables occupied. And, to top it off, the usually outstanding Judge K's Veal was overcooked. As I said in the beginning, our serve couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating but the restaurant has lost its way. I'll really miss Judge K's Veal. read more

My guests and I were seated in the lower level dining room which was very lively and quite loud. Having a conversation was a bit of a challenge and we had to speak loudly. We had a reservation which was helpful because the restaurant was 75% full at 6:15 pm. Service was friendly but rather un-attentive. Bread and oil was delivered quickly and drinks were on time but water glasses and iced tea were allowed to go dry and we had to flag our waiter for refills. The duck ravioli had delicious meaty mushrooms which were perfectly cooked but the ravioli were a little more al dente than tender. The duck filling was tasty. I attended a hospitality suite after party at a Hotel, there were about 8 different varieties of pasta dishes. It was awkward to take pics of the dishes, so I opted not to. The Rigatoni with I believe was a Al la vodka. There was a flat pasta dish made with meat and delicious red sauce. Pasta with calamari ans shrimp, I was not able to taste this since I forgot my epipen at home. Chicken parmesean...delicious flavorful red sauce. The cannolis I snatched to take back to my room to have with coffee in the morning. Again I did not visit the restaurant and will visit my next trip up.
