SAMPAN! I moved from NH to Chicago 5 years ago, and on my last trip back to the east coast I needed to stop in. I wanted a scorpion bowl so badly! For some reason I have yet to find a chinese restaurant in Chicago that serves them (apparently I have to go for Dim Sum in actual Chinatown for that), and I was craving one for about a month before. When we were seated I couldn't find the awesome section of the menu I remembered with all the crazy named drinks and felt a little foolish asking, but finally said to our server "um...do you still do scorpion bowls?" lucky for me they do! We got a scorpion bowl for 2 and it was plenty of booze for my friend and I...and it was only 9 bucks!! Holy Crap! That's all we went for really, so we were happy! I had already had a holiday meal otherwise I would have gotten my solo #7! The food as I remember is delicious, and now they serve some thai dishes as well? Oh Hillsborough, look at you, getting all cultural! Get the scorpion bowl. Really. But if you split more than one, make sure you have a designated driver. read more

By far my favorite Chinese restaurant! My go-to dish is Szechwan Chicken with Crab Rangoon and Chicken Fingers, although I have loved everything else I have tried. And I have tried a lot, as I grew up in Hillsboro. Having traveled throughout the country and Europe, and currently living in the DC area I have tried many chinese places and this is still my favorite! Delicious and always tastes fresh! read more

Had the all you can eat buffet as it was our first visit. Was well worth the cost as the food was very good. Will eat there again!

Sampan has always been our favorite Chinese Restaurant. Recently it seems they have been short changing people on their condiments. My last order of $ 75.00 was cheeped-out with only 4 fortune cookies - 2 packs of soy - and only 2 small containers of duck sauce. This about 25% of their norm. I suspect it's a new bag packer. Now I'm heading to Ming Do down the road. Went back and was much better . Maybe above was jus a fluke or error . Food is very good . Will keep an eye on this. read more

Under new management and much improved. Fresh ingredients, attentive and helpful waitstaff, superb bar tending, expanded menu now includes sushi. Still reasonably priced with plenty of free parking and easy access. Very happy they upped their game! read more

I have to say I am very disappointed. We have been buying from them for years. We ordered for New Years Eve. It was terrible. The beef in the beef fried rice was tough to say the least, the fried items in the pu pu platter were mushy and tasted like oil, awful. This $50.00 order was not worth anything. I went for lunch several months ago and it was terrible. My family and I gave it a try for an evening meal and it was worst. When we went to order they told us they were doing a limited menu. When our food came out it was cold & greasy. Our waitress was completely flustered. We really wanted to like this place because it was local, but we will never go back. Omg, do they put any meat in their food?! The large lo mein must have a teaspoon of chicken chopped up in miniature sizes. Why pay $8 for a quart of noodle when you can make it yourself for $0.50 at home. The chicken finger is all greasy, made of mostly batter and hardly any white meat in it. Also, prices have gone up, but portion has shrink over the year. They hire all these college/high school girl to work at the front reception area, and it is pretty gross to see these workers left their pork fried rice plate when you walk in. Overall, this place is too pricey and the food is pretty bland and horrible. I would not go there again just because they are really cheap on the meat. read more

I heard that this place had the best chinese food around. I could not have been more disappionted. First the Diet coke I ordered was full of syrup. no fizz whatsoever. So, I ordered a Bud light. I think an empty bottle was filled with Tap beer. The mug was good and frosty, but, I think in must have been dipped in the toilet first. It smelled really bad! We ordered the PuPu Platter. Could not even eat any of it. It was like one that had been set out as a display for a day or two, then served to us. The lo Mein was terrible! This was the worst meal we have had in a long time and the management did not want to help us. Picked up our order and traveled 30 min. When we got home, we had an incorrect entrée and the other entrée noodles were burnt. Neither item made for a delicious meal. They told us we could travel back for an exchange but would not credit us. They would put us in the credit book for another time. We told them that we were not locals and would not be back for a while but it did not matter. Before hanging up, I asked if they needed my name for the book. She responded it is "Simon" and that was not correct either so that I could not even claim the credit at a later date if I wanted. That credit will sit in their book for a VERY long time after this experience. read more

I have to say that I am new to the area and have only dined here once. I went with the typical order of a pu pu platter and house fried rice. They were both very good and I personally liked the crab rangoons, they were cream cheese deliciousness ( I am not a fan of the type with the sweet filling)! However, I was taken aback by the fact that they will not allow a fire in the middle of their pu pu platter. I went with my boyfriend sans the kids and I know they would have been extremely bummed out not to have it. The explanation I got was "the owner just does not do it". I am not sure if it is for insurance reasons or what, but it does take away the quintessential experience of Chinese dining. I do look forward to trying the sushi in the future and I personally prefer this place over Ming Du. One more thing that I noticed was that the cocktails are listed as having some brand name liquors in them and not once did I see a non well bottle grabbed of the rack. read more
