Sam's auto care is the best auto mechanic in the city. Honest, responsive and excellent service. They only use the best parts for your car and are much more competitive in their pricing. I have a Mercedes and they did everything a service B would have done at Bens workshop or a dealership plus a complete break flush for $200 less!!!! I scheduled an appt. was straight in and completed an hour and a half later. I've used them before as well for alternator and battery replacement and almost a $600 difference. My husband and I own a small "fleet" of cars that we rent out on Turo. While my husband can do a lot of the small maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, sometimes we need a shop for bigger work. We've been taking our 5-6 cars to Sam's for a number of years. First, they are always really quick with the work. We often get our car back the same day or within 1 business day. Second, the work is always done right the first time AND they are really affordable. I've never felt taken advantage of when I drop off a car on my own, not knowing anything about how cars really work. Also, the owner and his son are incredibly friendly and kind. Do not go here unless you appreciate terrible customer service, being yelled at, unprofessional behavior, an owner with anger management issues, and scam artists. If I could give negative stars, I would. I'm not sure who they paid to write good reviews, but it is absolutely not true. Might I mention that this is the first review I've ever written on Yelp and I felt absolutely compelled to do so. I came to Sam's Auto Care today after my car would not start outside of my apartment. I had to have my car towed to an auto repair shop, so I used Yelp, like many do, to find Sam's. They had good reviews and my dad (who owns a small car dealership in Houston and is used to dealing with finding new parts, broken down cars, etc.) called and talked to Sam himself and they agreed to have my dad send them the parts needed, so that we would just pay for labor. All seemed well and good. Unfortunately, within about 15 minutes of being in their store, I realized how unprofessional and rude Sam and his son, Omar, are. I had Enterprise pick me up with my rental car from Sam's Auto Care shop and before I left, I asked if I could go get something from my car. I asked if it was alright if I went through the garage, and Omar (Sam's son) said "yes, just bring me back your keys". I grabbed my things (a yoga mat and weights) and went back through the door. Apparently, on the way to the door, there was a battery charger sitting on top of a box next to the door (not very safe, if you ask me) and my yoga mat knocked it over. Let me clarify that I did not see my yoga mat knock anything over, but Omar suddenly picked something off the ground and said "you dropped this!", which I then apologized for and left. As I'm driving away with the car, Omar chases me down and asks me to come back inside as the "manager would like to speak to me". I agree, come back inside, and am immediately greeted by Sam (the owner) yelling at me at the top of his lungs in incomplete sentences. "You broke this." "This is important." "I cannot fix cars without this." "You will pay for this.", etc. I apologize and leave the store immediately, telling them I'll pay for it, as I feel like I'm either going to start crying or yell back, neither of which I would like to do in front of two complete strangers. When I finally had time to calm down and process the situation, I call Sam back to tell him that he probably should leave "very important things that he needs to fix cars" in safer places than right outside of the entrance on top of a box. Also, if they would not like customers to use the garage entrance, then they should have a sign there and also not say "yes" when I ask if it is okay. I also tell him that his yelling made me feel uncomfortable and that I'm not sure I want to do business with him, in which his response was more defensive yelling. Later, when Sam and Omar called to give me the price of this battery charger that I "broke", they told me it was $229. When I told them that I didn't appreciate the way they handled the situation, Omar then accused me of being a liar and trying to "trick them" so that I didn't have to pay for the part. They also told me that they would hold my car until I paid for the part. (This is stealing, folks). In order to get my car away from these terrible folks, I had to have my car towed to another auto shop and the Austin PD had to get involved. I also decided to Google the cost of a battery charger like the one I "broke", and the most expensive one I found was $113, with most of them ranging around $25. Con artists, if you ask me. Needless to say, I will never find myself anywhere near this place again, and I suggest that you don't either. UPDATE: Sam also misdiagnosed my car and if I had gotten my car "fixed" here, he would've replaced my starter, which did not need to be replaced. When I took it in for another diagnosis, turns out my battery needed to be replaced. My car is now in mint condition thanks to Zimmer's Auto Repair. UPDATE #2: Sam's Auto Care commented to say that this is a false review. Feel free to believe whomever you'd like, however, this is a true incident and I have the paperwork to prove it. Again, filled with CAPS LOCK and rude comments. After that comment was deleted, they then posted the below. As you can see, Sam has a problem with any constructive criticism. He should take a social media lesson, as Yelp is meant to help customers find the right business, not to argue about bad reviews. They also told me on the phone that their reviews on Yelp are all positive and that I am an idiot for thinking I could write a bad review and anyone would believe me. True story. I have had a terrible experience with this shop. I went in for a timing belt replacement and to get the fuel door fixed (it wouldn't stay closed). So they charged me like $900 for the timing belt, which was in line with other estimates I had received, and then $300 to fix the fuel door. When I agreed to the fuel door fix, I thought that by "fixing it" that would mean that it would "work." That was not the case. They replaced a small part on it, and it didn't fix it at all. I was out of town when it was fixed, so my fiance picked it up for me. I had a full tank of gas, so I didn't notice it wasn't fixed for a few weeks. (Basically, it was closed, but as soon as I opened it, it wouldn't close again). I took it back in to show that it wasn't fixed and to ask if they could fix it or give me a refund, and they looked at it and said, "oh, this part that we replaced was not the problem. It's a wiring problem. Come in next week and talk to Sam." Whatever they did when they were looking at it permanently locked the door. So when I was on a business trip to Dallas the next day and stopped for gas in the middle of nowhere, I couldn't get the door open. So I called them up and they were very rude and basically said, "This is not our problem. What do you want us to do about it?" Finally I tore open the lining in the trunk and manually opened it so I could get some gas and get moving. I decided to try one last time to get them to fix it or give me a refund. My fiance took it back in, and they said to bring it in the next day (now the 5th time we had to take time off work to visit the shop). On the fifth and final time they basically said, "we can't fix it and we're not giving you a refund." So we paid them $300 for nothing except some rudeness, and I almost got stranded like 30 miles from the closest town, and I was very clearly told this is "not their problem." When I tried to work it out with him, he was all confrontational about it, and was totally unreceptive to my feedback. After another great experience, I'm here to add a 5-star. One of the best auto care centers in Austin. The guy was very helpful. I went into the store because my hood wouldn't open. When I asked other places they all told me that it would cost a couple of hundred dollars to replace the latch. But when I came here, he told me he could fix it for me without replacing anything because they were all in good shape!!! He fixed everything for me by 1pm and it only costed $80. Also, I couldn't come into the store until later and he stayed after-hours for me to pick up the car. I came in about 20 minutes after the store closed! love this place and will definitely go back. Had a great experience with these guys. My car, an older saab, not easy to work on, broke down on S Lamar: shredded serpentine belt. Checked yelp ratings in the area and saw good reviews for them. Looked up and the shop was right across the street. They checked it out immediately, gave me a very reasonable estimate, and I went for lunch. Ramen at tatsua. Take it from a very recent unhappy customer - if you take your vehicle to Sam's, I have one piece of advice. Tell Sam's to keep EACH AND EVERY parts that they convince you that they NEED to replace. Do this, so that after you pay $800 to get your problem fixed and they tell you that THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, you can take those parts to another mechanic and get verification that the parts never actually needed to be replace and that the problem was something completely different. read more

I'm sitting outside of Spec's (don't judge me) and my car decides not to start, I go into a panic. Call AAA? Go inside and buy another bottle of wine? Ask a cute boy in the parking lot for help? I probably should have done all 3 but I decided it would be smartest to just call AAA. They came 45 minutes after I placed my call, checked under my hood (my car hood you perv) and told me that my battery was on it's way out and I needed to get a new one ASAP or I'd find myself in the same predicament very soon. Honestly, I didn't know where to take my car. Drop it off somewhere on South Lamar between my apartment and work? Wait another day and hope it doesn't die again? I opened up Yelp and saw Mike T.'s review of Sam's Auto Care - only 0.2 miles from my apartment. It was going there. 10 minutes later, I dropped my keys off in the night drop and left my poor little car there. The next morning, I called them and let them know why there was a mysterious CR-V parked outside their shop. Sam (I assume) was very friendly and told me they'd have it checked out and fixed in an hour. During my lunch break, I called them to check on my little baby & he said it was in fact in need of a new battery so they installed a brand new Interstate one for &129.99. He also let me know that if anything happened, there was a 3-year warranty so I could just take it back & they'd get me a new one. An hour later, I had gotten a ride to Sam's, payed and picked up my car. The service was quick, friendly and informative. I'm no car expert, but I'd trust these guys with my ride again! read more

A friend of mine frequently takes her older Acura to be repaired and serviced here and always had glowing reviews. It's hard to find a mechanic you can trust, ESPECIALLY if you're a woman. They also had stellar reviews on Yelp so I decided to give them a try. A few months ago I had my inspection done at Quick Lube on Manchaca and they mentioned that my valve cover was leaking oil and that I should get it fixed sometime soon. I got a quote from them to do the work (parts and labor) for $600. I didn't have that kind of money at the time so I opted to deal with it later. Yesterday my Alternator fan belt snapped and I had to get it repaired. I called Sam's Auto right away and made an appointment to bring it in the next morning. After looking at my car they pointed out the same problem that Quick Lube did a few months earlier. I asked them to give me a quote to repair the problem and they quoted me $150!!!! I dunno about you but a quote difference of $450 is a BFD in my book!! They got my belts replaced and the valve cover issue solved in a few hours and they didn't hassle or up sell me after we had decided on which repairs to do. I will definitely be back for my other car needs! read more

Sam is my man, my new mechanic, that is. My car was overheating and I took it nearby shop that I had heard good things about. They wouldn't even look at it until I signed a release form authorizing a $90 diagnostic test. Well no way, Jose (the guys name wasn't really Jose). About an hour later after calling around to other auto care shops I came across Sam, who besides having other great reviews, was instantly friendly on the phone and assured me he would check it out for free. He even joked and said I could pay him if I wanted. I called over to the shop where my car was to let them know that I would be picking it up and that I did not need their services. The mechanic there said that he was expecting me to send in the form so they went ahead and checked it out and found out what was wrong and that it would be $280 to fix it. Again, no way Jose. I called Sam again to get a more specific estimate and he quoted me $70. Yes, that is $210 dollars less than another shop less than a mile away. CRAZY. I'm sure the other place does great work but holy expensive labor costs....too rich for my blood. They also said it would take a day or two. So, I did the obvious thing and drove my car (slowly) down to Sam's Auto Care where he delivered 100% on what he said. I picked my car up a few hours later, paid the man his $70 (and was also told I could bring in my own parts to make it even cheaper). I declared my forever appreciation to have found a mechanic in Austin that doesn't want to take advantage of me! Car problems are just majorly stressful for me so you have no idea what a relief it is to have driven my car for more than a week without any problems and know deep in my heart that Sam is the man! read more

Nov. 12th 2018 - I wasn't going to even bother giving my bad review but after today... So my car needed a new Brushings ... Struts... shock assembly set. I'm recommended to check out Sam's Auto Care on s Lamar. $1300 for all of the above and done in a day. I go for it. Day of.. They call me to pick it up. "It's ready." They said. I pay and start driving off.. When all these 'Service' lights are going off.. traction service needed... 'Something else' needed... And then I look down at the steering wheel... Even though I'm driving straight the steering wheel looks like I'm turning right??!! I pull back around and I'm like.. Umm, my car is all messed up. They said.. oh yeah.. You have to go get an alignment after this kind of work. They didn't have the equipment to do alignments. Well i say "You shouldn't have done the work if you weren't going to have me driving out of here in the right condition?!!! Why wasn't this mentioned to me? And for me to find out like this??" - No mention that they Can't do alignments there, at all. He said he would send it to an alignment shop down the street and call me by the end of the day. All of that happened. Exactly 1 week later and I'm hearing the sway bar rattling again with every bump in the road... This is how the whole thing started a year ago. So $1300 and my problem is still here. They have a 1 year warranty.. so I am having to use it now a week later. Nov 15, 2018 - I took it in and they say they didn't hear anything but went ahead and replaced the bushings... So i take it around the block with the owner Sam and there's a new 'thunk' when I turn my wheel to the left ... he told me to wait for the rubber part to settle for 2 weeks and see if it stops. Nov 19th, 2018- the knocking is back. my husband heard it.. my friend heard it and so I took it in today to see if they can ride around with me to hear it. Immediately, the owner's son is short and rude with me.. saying we can't do at your convenience. Well I understand that, but we're worried about it being driven 8.5 hours on Thanksgiving day. At this point, His rudeness escalated to CALLING ME AN ASSHOLE twice and to get out or he will call 911. I turned my phone recorder on to catch him calling me an asshole.. i told him my car is under warranty and deserves to get looked at again and that I don't appreciate being called an asshole when I've been calm this whole time. He calls Sam, the owner, who YELLS at me about phone recording in his shop... doesn't care that his employee/son is calling women assholes for no reason. I told him that I am protecting myself against this type of mistreatment and poor customer service. What in world is wrong with these people? Another customer walks in and the son goes from crazy rude to innocent friendly shop guy. Was so bizarre to watch. Anyway that is my entire experience in the last few weeks with them. My boyfriend had left his car at my apartment complex when we were out of town during the 2015 Austin late spring floods and had come back to it with some weird liquid in the passenger seat. We went online car 'webmd' style and deduced that it had to be a leak somewhere that was dripping coolant due to the chemical-y smell of the liquid. We thought that perhaps the heavy rainfall had caused the leak to worsen. We filled the car with some more coolant since drives over 5 miles caused the engine to start overheating. We yelped different places nearby as soon we could, found this shop, and decided to drop off the car on a random weekday. They weren't able to look at it right then and there, but we received a call about 5 hours later telling us that there wasn't anything wrong with it. We went to pick up the car, and the attendants told us that they did a pressure test of the engine and couldn't find a leak anywhere. When we were first warned of a possible leak during an inspection a few months prior, whatever-chain-auto-place told us that it'd be at least $150 just to test for a leak, but Sam's Auto Care really took care of us and did it free of charge. We were completely willing to pay given their good reviews here, but they stepped it up by offering amazing service. We were still concerned, but they said that they kept the engine running for at least 30 minutes and there wasn't anything wrong with it. If we had any issues, they said, we could bring it back and have them look at it. They even said that there wasn't any point costing us more money for more tests if the test they ran didn't yield any damages. FANTASTIC service, and would totally come here again for any other car needs. It's great to finally find a place that isn't trying to up-sell or rip us off. Believe your fellow Yelpers, you need not look further for the best mechanics in town! THIS is the place! Sam is an honest mechanic who will do superior work at a reasonable price! I found myself in a tight spot. My engine light was on, and needed an asap inspection. I brought my Ford Fusion in on Wednesday at around 1pm, and Sam advised it would be about 3 hours. I strolled down to Drafthouse for a movie, then walked back and the work was done!! The charge was minimal and the service superb! The owners, Sam and Omar are kind, caring, and HONEST. They truly helped me out of a bind, and I will only bring my car here! read more

Here is the chain of events that explain why Sams gets 5 stars... 8/4/12 8:30 am Car wont start. 8:35 am Call Sams, They give me a number for a tow truck company. 9:00 am Tow truck arrives, takes me to Sams. 10:30 am Sam calls and tells me what needs to be done (battery is shot), I also ask. for him to check out my brakes as I think they need a look. 11:30 am Sam calls, battery is done, yes I need new brakes. 5:00 pm Sam calls, car is done, come pick it up. Not only did they get everything done in a single day, but they were also able to roll the tow charge into my bill so only one payment was needed. The guys at Sams are sharp, attentive, and will tell you exactly what needs to be done. No more, no less. Lets just say I know where my car will be going any time its sick! read more

Not often people have a good experience at an auto repair place, but I can say I am 100 percent satisfied with my experience. When my engine stopped working right on my VW, I had a sense of dread. I didn't have a mechanic I trusted in the area and used Yelp to find this company, and I am so happy I found them. They let me know the problem wasn't as bad as it seemed, they gave me a very reasonable estimate and had it working great within 3 hours. I appreciated the fact that the mechanic told me the things I needed to do now to get it running, and a few things that we can wait on but will need attention soon. This will be my spot for all my car service from now on. Highly recommend. read more
