I've been wanting to visit here for a loooong time, and randomly decided to try this place out. So here's the thing, the shrimp was very tough maybe over cooked? Both the fried shrimp and the shrimp in the salad were overly cooked. Sorry to say but the seafood salad which is usually my favorite thing to order at seafood restaurants was NOT good, don't waste your money or time. The crab legs were very sizable and full of flavor, I mean it's what you would expect nothing too out of ordinary. I would definitely come back for the crab legs and I saw the blue crabs were $18 for half dozen, which is the most affordable I've found in the city! But the cooked food, I don't think I'll try the shrimp again, I am eager to try the fried fish, hopefully that won't be disappointing. Three stars for me! read more

I happened to look it up on Yelp and saw that they had ready made food (other than sea food) and it's a fish market. The two guys were kind and welcoming. If I lived in Richmond, Sam's would be my go to for seafood. We called Sam's to ask if they had crab, and they said to come in about an hour. When we are arrived, we also decided to order shrimp as they looked really good. They cooked everything for us upon order so the crab and shrimp were all very fresh. Both the crab and the shrimp were delicious. Sam's also has a variety of chicken and sides. I would definitely return for lunch or dinner and I highly recommend this spot. Not too shabby!!!!! Had the fried lake trout, fried Whiting, mac and cheese, fries, chicken wings and the seafood salad. All to my liking. Even tho the mac is Stouffer's you can't go wrong with it. I personally like Stouffer's it tastes better than ALOT of people's homemade mac. Mac is my weakness and I'll take Stouffer's over nasty homemade. The chicken wings were a tad bit big but seasoned to perfection. I probably won't get those again tho just going off of size. I'm a weird eater tho. Have to say the the seafood salad is a winner. This was my first time eating their food. My mother raved how good it was. A lot of places where they provide fried fish is simply a greasy mess and when the fish is fried the bread that normally served with it becomes its sponge - However, this food was really good and the bread was no where near soggy with oil. The smell was great as well you did not smell a greasy smell but you could smell the spices (a very pleasant aroma to the nose - that make you anticipate eating what you brought). I ordered: Fried whiting dinner with hush puppies, steak fries, and crab sticks. I have never had crab sticks that were not greasy and not taste except for a oil fried taste. However, the seasoning was sooo good and it was no where near greasy. I told my mom that this is restaurant quality food! Sam's Crab House has definitely gotten a new customer - the quality of the food (Fresh Fried Fish by the way, the best hush puppies that were not a flour oily mess, and steak fries crunchy outside and mushy inside) was undeniably superb to a lot of fast food places around. The place is right off of Jeff Davis as it is known by the local and the setup is more of a market then a restaurant as there is no place to sit down to eat. The point of buying fresh seafood and having them cook it right in front of you is pretty cool. For those of you in a hurry you can call ahead to have it ready when you arrive but I like to watch the cooks in action.. You can get other stuff as we as they have a variety to choose from even a bit of soul food.. Been getting Flounder Fish from here for years and all of a sudden the Batter is different. Had an event and ordered 3 Pounds of Fish and the fish fell apart. If you are going to change the Batter change the price, don't charge customers the same price for cheaper batter. So I called Sam about it and he tells me that nothing changed. I really wanted some good steamed crabs and I did not get that. The crabs were big in size, but after I had placed my order and paid for a dozen males, I watched the guy put already steamed crabs on the pot. When you re-steam crabs the meat is soft and mushy. Over half of the crabs were mushy and I left the bag open on the drive home so they wouldn't continue to steam. I also got a lake trout sandwich. The fish was ok, but I got one almost medium piece of fish on 2 pieces of Texas Toast. Everybody knows a fish sandwich is at least 2 pieces of fish. The crab cake sandwich should be called the imitation crab sandwich. They use fake crab meat which is a scam to the customer and charge you 10 dollars for it. I would never go back to this place solely based on it's a "crab house" and they serve fake crab. read more

You have to see his fruit display (should definitely be on the cover of a culinary magazine!) The owner, Sam, was wonderful throughout the entire experience! He understood that it was my daughter's "special day" and wanted to make sure that she did not worry about anything as far as the food was concerned.
